- In Loving Memory of Bob Newhart, we are posting this classic bit in which Bob Newhart plays an air traffic controller.
The Smothers Brothers
The Smothers Brothers, Tom and Dick, are one of the most iconic comedy duos in the history of television. Tom and Dick began performing as a duo in the late 1950s, playing in coffeehouses and clubs in San Francisco. Their act consisted of music, comedy, and witty banter, which quickly gained them a following.
The Smothers Brothers became a household name in the late 1960s with their variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The show was groundbreaking in its approach to comedy, pushing the boundaries with political satire and social commentary. The show also featured up-and-coming musical acts, including The Doors and The Who, and introduced the world to comedians like Steve Martin and George Carlin.
The Smothers Brothers' irreverent style has made them a beloved and enduring force in American comedy.

And another piece of my youth is gone. Thanks for the joy and laughter Mr. Newhart, you will be greatly missed.
As every week passes it seems another part of our youth is gone. So sad.
That he will.
But we can visit them on RUclips. I'm grateful for that at least.
Pretty soon we’ll all be experiencing the long, dreamless sleep referred to by Dr. Carl Sagan.
I feel the same way. 🥺
When my father died suddenly after a very short illness, aside from my grief I was dealing with all the stress of funerals and finances and the things that go with a sudden death. My mother had already gone, and my only sibling lived some way away so it was pretty much down to me. The stress meant that i wasn't sleeping and was altogether pretty miserable. Then a friend gave me a Bob Newhart tape. I decided to listen to it one night when I couldn't sleep and found myself relaxing for the first time in weeks. I even laughed. It was lovely and I have been grateful to Newhart ever since.
Bob Newhart's comedic timing is impeccable! Newhart and Tim Conway are 2 people that could keep a straight face while cracking everyone else up. And, both had totally clean humor, unlike today. Bob, you are missed already.
From stand-up to "Bob Newhart" to "Newheart" to "The Big Bang Theory". One of the best comedians of all time. RIP...
Thanks to the administrators of this channel. Bob Newhart too has left us a long and lasting body of work to laugh with for decades to come. A legacy, a gem, an American icon, R.I.P. Bob Newhart.
with appreciation and gratitude.
Driving instructor!😂😂😂
How dare you forget ELF?! ☃️
@@jerseyjoyride1316 It's not hard. ELF sucked.
and thanks to his Professor Proton role on Big Bang, so many more people have now heard of Bob Newhart!
RIP! Grew up with him, grew old with him!
@@StevenTorrey
I'm right there with you, I'm old now too.
Rest In Peace, Bob.🌹
Same.
❤❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
RIP Mr Bob Newhart! A legend who will never be forgotten!
Thanks, Smothers Bros!
Oh no!
😥💔
And now it's only one Smothers Brother, Tom having died several months ago.
Unfortunately at our age(I’m 75), 75% of those we watched, listened too, loved, admired or not, are gone.
Replacements need a lot of work. Blessed Be.
Sad but true, our generation is drifting away with ever increasing speed...
Rest In Peace, Bob Newhart. And thank you!
RIP Bob...you will be greatly missed. There was no one like you...and never will be again...a true comedic genius.
Just like the recently deceased Donald Sutherland, Bob Newhart loved what he did, and did what he loved! R.I.P.
This "one side of the conversation" routine is something he perfected in the movie Hell Is For Heroes. He portrayed a supply sergeant who is talking on the line he knew was being monitored by the Germans. He was brilliant, then and now.
He did it on stage in the late 1950's years before that film and his album was out two years prior to the film as well
it was used in the film because he had already perfected it
@@richarddecredico6098There’s always one. 🙄
One of the GOAT comedians
He is still one of America's greatest comedians.
PanAm, Braniff those were some days. Hit like if you ever flew on either of those carriers. RIP Bob, one of my comedy heroes.
New York Air was wonderful to fly on, small nosh bags between Raleigh and New York circa 1984. Happy Days.
PAA family here, Captain and Stewardess.
@essiebessie661 - As a child, I took my first PAA flight from Montego Bay Jamaica to JFK aboard a brand new B747. It was magical. I still describe the PAA cabin crew as the closest thing to Angels we have here on Earth.
My worst flight ever was on a Braniff flight from DFW to ORD during February in the late 70s. Chicago weather was a real doozy. We departed DFW at 1900, expecting to land at 2100. We didn't land until 0400, with refuelling stops in St. Louis and Milwaukee. What made it so bad was one of the cabin crew throwing up in the galley during turbulence. After that, the passengers took over the economy section and gave away all the alcohol. It was a real circus.
Pan Am and Braniff…making me feel old, flew both a few times. RIP Bob Newhart
Quit pandering for likes.
As a former air traffic controller, I approve this message. 😂😂 R.I.P
My parents had two of Bob's comedy albums (I have them now) that I played over and over until I memorized them. Such a funny man. A man who entertained millions and was a genuine lovely person. God bless you.
Same here! Love Bob ❤😢
One of the very best. He will be sorely missed!!
I first heard Bob Newhart when his "The Button Down Mind Of Bob Newhart" came out. I was 11 years old at the time. My father came home with it. He bought the album because he was a driving instructor and someone had told him of the skit called the "Driving Instructor". I loved that album. Sixty some odd years later I can still remember a lot of the actual monologues. Newhart had an active career of sixty years in an industry that chews'em up and spits'em out, a testament to the timelessness of his comedy. Thank you Bob, for the brightness you brought to the world. RIP.
"Is this somebody from the office?"
The Driving Instructor always had me in stitches. Gods speed Mr Newhart and thank you for the laughter.
One of my favorite comedians when I was a kid. Such an unassuming loveable guy and hysterical story teller. RIP Bob. ❤
@@CatJabZ
I loved it when he would visit with Johnny, on the Tonight Show!
He truly was an "unassuming loveable guy", fits him perfectly!!! 🥺
He always had a deadpan or smiling delivery of clever verbal slapstick.
It's a gift to be a good story teller...and...Bob Newhart had the gift. You were never really sure what the next line would be or where the story was going to go...trait of a good story teller to keep you engaged. (The next closest that comes to mind would be Garrison Keillor ). Thank you Bob Newhart for the laughs and the memories...pretty sure you've got them laughing up there in heaven. 🤗
Garison Keillor couldn't hold a candle. . .he didn't come off as a kind man. Whereas Bob was the best.
Rest in peace Bob Newhart aka Dr Robert Hartley
One of the most BRILLIANT comedic minds of all-time. ❤
Bob Newhart was and will always be remembered as GREAT. His brand of humour will never be forgotten, many thanks Bob.
I'd never heard this skit before. "Why don't you just tell the passengers it was a giant eagle?" nearly had me on the floor!🤣 RIP Bob, you were one of a kind.
A clean comedian is so rare these days. He is a true legend. The world has lost some great comedians - Bob Newhart, Tim Conway, John Candy, John Pinette and Robin Williams when he was clean, to name a few.
Amazing! I grew up in Europe and only discovered Newhart on reruns of the Newhart show on Nick At Night. What a great comic! No cursing, just clever humour!
A comedic genius. May he rest in peace.
Genius of comedic timing.
The 'Sir Walter Raleigh' skit is and was (in my opinion) the finest you ever did, and you most certainly did lots of great skits. Thank you for the memories.
I liked the Tobacco skit but for me the best was the Submarine.
RIP Mr. Newhart. Thanks for all the laughs!
RIP BOB. This joke is still funny now as it was then. Air travel jokes never seem to lose their appeal for good reasons!
sniff. Class deadpan humour. Since the 60s. And I'm Uk
I used to watch both his shows in the 70s & 80s. Both excellent, especially the finale of Newhart with the flashback to his earlier series.
BTW, I also used to watch the Smothers Brothers.
I loved The Smothers Brothers, they bravely spoke truth to power and were hysterically funny while doing it.
I remember the Grace L Ferguson Airline. One funny routine.
R.I.P. Bob. These sketches were part of my childhood.
My absolute favorite is when he did Sir Walter Raleigh introducing tobacco to England.
My dad was a pilot for 60 years. He loved this routine and I grew up listening to all of the Newhart albums.
As an Aussie I remember one example of his humour that tickled me and I never forgot.
He was going on holiday and saw a sign at a motel which said that the tariff was cheaper if you made your own bed.
So he signed in and was handed some timber and a hammer and nails. The image in my mind still makes me laugh and I'm in my 80s.
Pan Am, United, and now Mr. Newhart. I hope your deadpan humor is a hit in the afterlife.
I live in London and am now 81, loved him all my life, used to listen on the radio, just brilliant and so sadly missed.
I began laughing 2 minutes in... and I couldn't stop. His timing is/was brilliant. His deadpan demeanor perfection. And I do remember watching as a family Bob Newhart. Thank you for this priceless clip.
Thank you for watching!
My favorite was the Mrs. Grace L Ferguson Airline and Storm Door Company from his The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart LP.
RIP Bob, the Bob Newhart Show still one if my favorite shows, it's always on somewhere on the dial. My go to show before I go to bed. You didn't have to be vulgar and dirty to be funny.
"You can't miss it - we're the 1st international airport on the right." HAHAHA HAHAHA. RIP, you incredibly funny human.
There are genuine funny controller/aircraft conversations here on RUclips. Bob was ahead of his time.
i can't add to anything, so I'll just say a fond farewell to the driving instructor, Nutty Walt and all the rest and, when the opportunity presents itself, relive his comedic greatness through the endless miles of hilarity which we have been fortunate enough to capture for posterity through clips like this...
Amazing the way this guy's humor holds up after all these years. He's still funny and original.
Newhart's phone bits were masterpieces of comedy.
I hope my grandfather saw this bit. He was an air traffic controller in the Air Force in the early 50s.
Love him my father had quite a few of his records
I had the pleasure of seeing his act live. He was one of a kind!
His one-sided conversations are the best!
Listened to these on BBC radio. Was almost word perfect. RIP Bob.
R.I.P. Bob Newhart. You had me laughing for decades. I watched you since B&W was the only option.
I saw this when it was it was on about 55 years ago. I still remember the "tell 'em it was giant eagle & Piper cub - just keep moving and don't look behind you"
One of my first LP records was "The button-down mind of Bob Newhart"! Listening to any track would immediately lift my spirits ( ".. the flashing red light on the car you hit blinded you?... Yes, officer, she was just telling me about it...)
I also have find family memories of listening to a cassette of his comedy albums on long car rides. We laughed so much, thanks to him! RIP
Ah Bob you were a great hit in South Africa in the late 70's - Thank you for all the laughs you gave us all back in simpler times. You will be missed!
I have 3 Newhart comedy albums. 2 of them won Grammys. Most skits are 1 sided phone conversations. They are all brilliant !!
My dad introduced me to Bob Newhart, and Bob was a staple of my youth. I remember those LPs with great fondness.
RIP, Bob.
RIP, Dad.
I love this video! My media outlet vas extremely honored to cover Bob Newhart performing live stand-up comedy during TBS Just For Laughs Chicago 2013 at The Chicago Theatre. Then, after the show, Mr. Newhart vas gracious enough to give everyone a complimentary photo vith him outside the stage door. It vas such a memorable night! RIP to a true Hollywood legend. ❤️🙏🏻❤️
I think he was the only comedian who did this style of comedy. Totally original and no one else could do it. His take on King Kong climbing up the side of the Empire State Building is absolutely hilarious.
I grew up with Bob - RIP, and thank you for all the laughs!
Bob will be missed; his unique way of deadpan humor will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace ❤
'Driving Instructor' & 'Cruise of the USS Codfish' are two that stay with me.
Yet another pair of shoes that can't be filled. Your missed.🌠⚘
One of the best, EVER! He will definitely be missed. RIP Bob.
We saw him filming Newhart many years ago. He did the warm-up, too. And he was funny. Ah, memories.
'The Driving Instructor' always made me laugh, why ? I am a Driving Instructor and have been for 42 years. My other fav is the 'Bomb Disposal' Never get tired of either. RIP Bob.
In my family, if Bob Newhart was on the show, we'd watch it. This was back when we, like most families, had one TV in the living room.
Comedy from back in the day was so much better than what passes for comedy today. Yeah, I know, I'm old but a surprising number of the younger generation agree with me after I introduce them to movies and tv shows from way back.
When I heard of Bob's passing away the other day I felt real sorrow and a true loss. "The Bob Newhart Show" is my 2nd favorite Sitcom of all time. RIP Mr. Newhart
I must say that the sadness of Bob Newhart's passing is almost compensated for by the afct that so many of these sketches had become really difficult to find, anywhere. And now we're finding them popping up all over.
Bob Newhart was quite probably THE greatest comedian to come out of the USA in mine, or anybody else's lifetime. There are other comedians who you might argue; Abbott and Costello, Richard Pryor perhaps. But none that are so convincingly special that you have no doubt.
And what continues to amaze me is that Bob Newhart, that incredible talent, those unforgettable monologs, only ever won a single Emmy! If there is one thing that persuades you that awards are the most ridiculous bit of unimportant fluff, the most insincere way for the unknowing to support the talented, then that one statistic says it all. The one consolation for me, is that he almost certainly couldn't have cared less.
Always makes me laugh, it must be so hard doing what he does. Absolutely brilliant.
RIP Bob …. You’ve given so much fun to my life
love this man.
Loved Bob Newhart. One of the greatest ever. I miss him.
He was brilliant. So much of his comedy was in what he didn't say - he set things up for us to imagine the hilarious consequences. Thanks for so many laughs.
Well said!
A true legend of comedy.
Even over here in the UK, he was always making us laugh. One of the greats.
Bob Newhart was a Great Comedian! So underrated, his low key like this is Funny! Never needed to swear or get dirty to make people laugh! Rest in Peace Bob!
Thank you for sharing this. Bob Newhart was truly a great and a classic. R.I.P. Mr. Newhart you will be greatly missed. 💐
I was flying a Piper Cherokee into Springfield MO, with a DC-9 behind me... yeah, I lived some of that LOL
I remember seeing this skit. I think Bob Newhart did other monologues of this same nature.
Another comic great gone; I remember swapping a Trucking tape for one of his with my brother; I absolutely loved the bus driver sketch.
Another Comic genius has gone away from us,😢 Mr. Newhart thank you for the memories
Good clean comedy. He will be missed.
Thank you so much for this gem! RIP Bob.
Incredible and you re-invented yourself over and over by just being yourself! Amazing and you are so missed. RIP 💙
King Bob, had all his Albums as a kid Driving instructor; Walter Raleigh etc. I also remember the "Toupee sketch" on the "Dean Martin Show" Hillarious. RIP Bob; like Tommy Cooper over here in UK. Absolutely irreplacable!
Newhart's humor was incredible. I will miss him..... RIP
Thank you so much for posting these - I loved him so much🎭
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a couple of best of compilations of Bob Newhart and his first four albums, all on CD. I don't have this routine so it must be on one of the other three. I may have heard it once before but not in a decade or more most likely, it cracked me up.
Great stuff! Glad you found it!
Thank you. The GREAT years are so far behind.
His deadpan humor can't be matched today.
What a joy this guy was. Best wishes for the next phone call. R.I.P.
RIP Bob…… you made us all LAUGH❤️
