half a million made it to Woodstock. Twenty million will tell you they were there. Some Canadian friends and I made it as far as somewhere near Poughkeepsie before being turned around and sent home by NY State Police who blocked the road and redirected traffic. We were just a few of the tens of thousands who tried but didn't make it. Woodstock was the pinnacle of the Peace and Love movement but unfortunately, it was also its swansong. Never before, never since, never again will there be anything like it. Wish I had made it but, so do millions of others.
I was there I was 11 years old and my mother and father were Hard Rock Fans my father was a state police officer in another state my brother and I went to this. One thing I can remember. There was a lot of people running around with no clothes on. We had a 1965 Plymouth Fury station wagon which we lived in for the whole time the concert went on
I was 10 in 1969 but I got to attend the July 19-21, 1974, Sedalia Music Fest in Sedalia, MO., at age 15. A few bands like Lynryd Skynryd, Eagles, BTO, REO, Jeff Beck, Joe Walsh(right before he joined the Eagles), Bob Segar, Aero Smith, CACTUS, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, America, etc., made the 3 days wonderful except for the 95+ degree weather with no shade. I still have the sunburn.....
Always believed that a lot the success & lack of violence is there were no corporate giants involved & limited liquor. Just weed, wine in skeins & acid🤗
I watched a show at the IMAX on the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. (I do remember Woodstock happening, I was aware of what was going on but I was little and very far away) One of the things they said about this one and the last one was that... "we're not there anymore". The purpose and feel of the '69 one was very informal and just a drop in thing. '99 was sponsored and corporate greed and, while better organised, it missed the mark of what the original was.

In 1969 I was 13 and of course missed the real Woodstock, but because my Father went to the wrong theater to pick us up after the movie, we watched it three times. After the third time we wondered if he went to the "other theater" where we lived, which was a block away and walked over there and there he was, sleeping in the car waiting for us. However I did make it to Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, in 1973. Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead and the Band... It was a great show, but I have never had any desire to go to a show that big ever again. There were 600,000 people there, and nowhere near enough resources for a crowd that big.
lived at the corner of 17B and hurd road. week before my 8th birthday. 4 events stand out for me. My parents parked 5800 cars in their hay field across from hurd road. I opened the window on Monday Morning and heard Jimi playing the Star Spangled Banner. I would up with a 1952 VW bug that I learned how to drive on at age 8 in the same fields where the cars were parked. My cub scout troop helped with the clean-up of the site.
So true that back then we were actually able to enjoy a concert without having to text our friends or continually take pictures of the event without really enjoying it. I was too young to go to Woodstock but I've sure enjoyed all the stuff of seen of it and I bought the Woodstock album too.

I had kind of run away, more like snuck away, from home that weekend or right before that weekend and I was down in DC hanging around with the hippies I wanted to see what that scene was. Everybody was saying hey we're going to Woodstock. I had no idea what they were talking about. I thought it it was on the other side of town or something I didn't know, but I was getting ready to go with everyone. Someone went to get their van and we were going to be leaving in a few minutes. At that time I looked and I saw my mothers car driving around Dupont Circle. I went to a phone booth to call my home and talk to my brother to see what was going on. Right then all of a sudden I hand grab my shoulder from behind, it was my mother. I was dragged home and I ended up watching Woodstock on the news that weekend

Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on RUclips. 😀
The only way we will ever have a party like that again? Pick 20 countries around the world to all have a weekend bash of the best bands from each country! It will take tremendous amount of planning and volunteers to accomplish but wow! 😮😊❤
Not a long time after woodstock we had a similar music festival at Launching place. The best Australian bands for the weekend. It was not well attended becoming a financial failure for that reason. And during the Saturday night rain set in. Heavy rain. But it was a beautiful venue in a natural amphitheatre in the hills. But it was, as you say, a great party.
Hi You forgot to mention that Woodstock was a PROTEST against the Vietnam war THAT’S WHY THERE WAS SUCH A BLOW OUT ATTENDANCE THAT KNOCKED THE FENCES DOWN!
I was 22 when Woodstock happened. I was offered an $11 ticket for free, but declined, because I had something else to do. I am actually glad I didn't attend.
I was at Woodstock in August 1969, three months before getting drafted into the army during the Vietnam War. There are plenty of fantastic original Woodstock photos to use in a 21-minute video. So why use these crap photos that are not from Woodstock. Jimi, Janice & Jim are rock 'n rolling over in their graves.
We dont see any field toilettes. (in Sweden often called for Baja-Maja, and always deployed where big happenings are). Thus we KNOW, people must have done their needs where they were, and thus, there were a terrible stench... We see lotsa of pics of young, beatiful, halfnaked people in their hippie clothes, dancing and enjoying life... Etc etc. But we should be aware there was ALSO this stench in the air, and Im not talking only about the sweat of unwashed people nor smoke from "grass"... The event was planned as a 2 day event, and broken up a little earlier because of the rain. I bet whatever, a heavy reason for an earlier ending is, all this water around was full of ---- we dont need to guess what... And the danger of severe field diseases become immediately acute.
I wonder why you say all this. There WERE toilets ... not enough for the crowds that showed up and that did lead to bad smell in that area. Certainly no one was doing their "needs where they were" ... lol The event was not planned for 2 days, it was planned for 3 and they expected early arrivals and that did happen, it did not end early due to rain,. The last music was planned for Sunday but the rains and other problems led them to putting Hendricks on on Monday. All the water was not ... why would you fill in such details without knowledge of what actually happened?
@@TomNoddy Tx for the response. I simply dont see any toilettes on the pics... I see lotsa of people, but no toilettes nowhere. So I do take my conclusions. I understand there must have been toilettes somewhere, but apparent some couldnt have possiblity to hold themselves... Sheer logic.
All of these people are now in the 70s or 80s! I was in 11th grade when I got a job at Devonshire Downs where they held a 3-day rock festival in June. CSN came to tell everyone about Woodstock in August. I was too young to drive to NY from Calif. The concert-goers were my age and up. Seniors in high school and drop-outs, and up. I'm 71 now. So they all are in their 70s. Hard to comprehend. I hope they aren't MAGA.😖🥺😧🤯 But many had dropped out...😢 PS I noticed how thin everyone is. No wonder I tried to never eat (German mother devoted her life to feeding everyone...she was never happier than when my brother dropped in with his stoned friends. She loved them and their appetites). Kids nowadays are much larger--more like my dad and uncles who were beefed up by Roosevelt when they joined the military. He wanted them big and threatening to Nazis, not starved by the Depression. It worked. But we kids then had no fast food--it was just exploding in those couple of years--suddenly all of todays brands. And we had no muscles--no one was a runner, only brave souls swam in the ocean and surfed, unlike today--Gen Z is brave and adventurous physically. We swam in the ocean and camped, but not one of my girlfriends did until yrs later. Girls were pressured to stop riding bikes, skateboarding, etc. We went back in our 20s... Woodstock and camping outside for it was a huge thing. Parents' gen freaked. They tried to think they were superior to those "hippies." Unlike the people who lived there and met them. Mud, long hair, drugs (any and all were certain to melt your brain forever) made church ladies crazy and men angry. But by the end of the 70s, 10 yrs later, they had adjusted, listened to the Beatles, and loved all the kids with long hair--now their family members. Huge change ini the 10 yrs after Woodstock. But Woodstock was cutting edge--only bands, who had lots of money--had the freedom to dress like that, smoke pot openly, etc. The spring before Woodstock, the L.A. Board of Education--under threat of law suits by the ACLU and others--had finally let girls wear pants to school, then jeans, and guys wear long hair and sideburns. Just weeks b4 the end of classes that summer. So if you saw these kids in Calif, the girls would be wearing dresses, nylons, and prissy, uncomfortable shoes, and the guys had very short hair... You could hardly buy a pair of jeans, esp bell bottoms. One chain opened that sold the guys hip hugger pants that were striped...very low on the hips, hard for girls to wear. But they soon were selling jeans and we made a lot of peasant tops, crocheted ponchos. This brings back so much. TY!
Seeing that you presented pictures from both the Sixties Woodstock and the Nineties Woodstock and you've supplied the stats on the Sixties Woodstock... the Nineties version was a bit more violent.
There's no way I could have tolerated being around that many people. Plus, hate camping. Be homeless as a child and there is many things you do the rest of your life to ensure your safety
Well, there weren't too many pictures I haven't seen before, and the inclusion of NON WOODSTOCK pics that were not from the original event didn't help.
I think Max Yazgur made a very nice profit hosting the event at his farm. The organizers paid him a lot of money for the use of his property. At least that’s my understanding.
Really? I was there last year and didn't see anything like that. Bethel woods Center For Performing Arts looks a bit like Disneyland at the entrance, but is a tastefully done tribute to an important part of American culture. Many contemporary musicians and groups play at the state-of-the art amphitheater. I walked around in the actual "bowl" where the audience and stage would have been in 1969. It still looks the same.
We were down the thruway and my brother wanted to go, but I-90 got closed down. Some other friends, later in our band, said they went but left 'cause the scene was too difficult and messy; not fun.
Uhh, I think this man is confusing being high on Marijuana with depression. When I use it some times I dance and some times I"m in the zone mellowed out and sometimes it's a complete anxiety attack for the whole trip.

Jimi Hendrix' band was named "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows" not "Band Of Gypsies", Festival headliner, Hendrix played on Monday morning, as did a few others, because of weather delays and that he insisted on performing during daylight., many people had left the event by then. Hendrix and band received $50,000 for the event, a HUGE sum of money in 1969.

Tie dye is not painted. the rubber bands affect what dye absorbs when the bunches are dipped in watery dye. People became very good at5 it, sold them outside concerts, on boardwalks, and in boutiques. Joe Cocker was not a hippie--he had far more money than a hippie--at least 2 hit albums (Aqualung and Thick As A Brick--not sure of the dates) and toured the world, filling the Forum 2 or 3 yrs later.

😅 nobody in the U.S. called themselves a "geezer." that was a British thing. in the U.S. "geezer" means old guy.
I am an "Old Man". I did say, I lived thru that Period of History. Woodstock took place in July. 1969. I missed it by One Week. As I had Orders to go to 'NAM. That makes me a "Geezer" on both sides of "the Pond".
So many pictures of Limp Bizkit- Fred Durst wasn't even born in 1969.
Ha! Exactly; those errors made me laugh out loud!
he was the start of the problems in 99 .
But I saw Richie Havens, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, John Sebastian... so they got some right.

half a million made it to Woodstock.
Sorry 4 sunburn..
'99 was sponsored and corporate greed and, while better organised, it missed the mark of what the original was.
it seemed a war for something that wasn´t defined in both death, rape, this all made by big corporations and local sellers looking for profit and heat with acids made water essential but no water 99 dollars a botle and a first aid doctor who was organising the ambulances and health vehicules said that in warzones were less criminal ,he described what he saw and was hell, check it

Great follow up item, from new perspective!
This travesty is not worthy of your excellent story.
So true that back then we were actually able to enjoy a concert without having to text our friends or continually take pictures of the event without really enjoying it. I was too young to go to Woodstock but I've sure enjoyed all the stuff of seen of it and I bought the Woodstock album too.
>"It's very rare for a single event to make its mark on history."
Single? This bot doesn't know it collected images from two events and thought it was the same event.
3 events. 1994 and 1999 amongst the 1969 footage...

I was 16 with a 1965 Mustang and begged my Mama to let me go. She asked where it was and when I told her New York, she lost her mind! I can't repeat everything she said (LOL) but I didn't get to go. It was probably a good thing! BTW, I live in Mississippi so it was quite an ask. Not surprised when she said NO!
i normally when young i would say ,"i´m going out, maybe i´ll arrive later" as when 18 i got a Mercedes 280S from 68 ofered by a old man who my father had sold a big agriculture property with a huge house, and the car was inside of one of the three garages with arched doors in wood, a bus would fit there and i told him ,"there´s a mercedes here looking new "and the old man or landlord when younger said "keep it ,i offer you the car" and when in jully i told my mother knowing that i was in vacations "i´m going to Spain and see some sights"40 kms from my home ,the Spanish border and i did went to spain ,france , germany ,the netherlands than i went north only stoped in Sweden by early Setember i was back in my home and said how amazing was the meditarranean cost of Spain and she asked me "and why so many time ,you left in early jully ?" ,"oh?i met a girl and i stayed in her house all this time ,we used to go to the beach everyday and how wonderfull is barcelona"in reality i met a girl in each country i had been and we went three and returned two and a german girl, one stayed till today in Sweden, other married a german girl that came with us till Portugal and i was too young to marry ,this in 1969 and only married by the first time in 72 and gasoline was cheap as i didn´t notice the money spent on a 280S ,that i own today and i put 25€ in it and after 20km and a bit more i have to return home , i went to the beach spent 100€ in gasoline at the time BP 100octanes which makes the car spend less and put a litle more power in it ,today i put 30€ in my skoda octavia 2.0tdi sport to do the same 234 kms but no more than 100km/hour or 60 miles/hour

I too shared the same response from my parents. I was 16 with a 64 Chevelle.
Haha, you got busted too!
I loved Joe Crocker unless I had to watch him. His movements and that thing he always did with his fingers just made me nuts.
That thing he always did with amazing British songs made ME nuts.
He should have stuck to gas-fitting in Sheffield.
being from sheffield myself i disagree to put it lightly we love him invented air guitar wasnt at woodstock but at isle of wight 69 and 70
Much of the narration is absurd & ridiculous! Utter nonsense! Many of the photos have nothing to do with the original Woodstock! Nonetheless, hurray for Melanie! ❤ RIP to the quintessential Flower Child 😢
I've never heard of it referred to as "the hippie fest."
In 1969, $6,000 had the buying power of $51,346 today ... not great, but not shabby, either.
Thank you so much for sharing this event.

They did not expect the turn out, was about 50 thousand, but before the stage was set there was more than 50 thousand . Rest is HISTORY all know it especially who attended it.
Had the privilege of watching RICHI HEVAN PERFORM in goa somewhere in the 90's
Sorry I missed it. I lived way over in northern Idaho and no way to get there. Always regretted that, but so happy for videos like this to see what it was like..
Also if ya dig and enjoyed this video on Woodstock 😀 you may also enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out. 😀
So glad 2 see..whar i never saw. Dig it !
The only way we will ever have a party like that again? Pick 20 countries around the world to all have a weekend bash of the best bands from each country! It will take tremendous amount of planning and volunteers to accomplish but wow! 😮😊❤
How are you going to get that many bands to play for free? Or get donated venues?
Good luck!

What a mess! You mixed woodstocks
total BS
Inclusivity? Integration? Nobody cared, it was about the music.
It is frightening. I am glad this wasn't in Britain although we have that kind of thing as well.

Nice palm trees in New York...what a crock of crap. Thumbs down 👎

Hi
You forgot to mention that Woodstock was a PROTEST against the Vietnam war THAT’S WHY THERE WAS SUCH A BLOW OUT ATTENDANCE THAT KNOCKED THE FENCES DOWN!
I saw parts of Griffiss Airforce Base which was not the woodstock of '69 but '99 .

Certainly no one was doing their "needs where they were" ... lol
The event was not planned for 2 days, it was planned for 3 and they expected early arrivals and that did happen, it did not end early due to rain,.
I hope they aren't MAGA.😖🥺😧🤯 But many had dropped out...😢
PS I noticed how thin everyone is.
TY!
Y'all today just don't get it and you never will.....it was just a thing! ✌️ Peace out 🌈❤️
Seen them, there are books and magazines , there was the movie too. There is nothing I haven't seen and this was before the internet.
Seeing that you presented pictures from both the Sixties Woodstock and the Nineties Woodstock and you've supplied the stats on the Sixties Woodstock... the Nineties version was a bit more violent.
Janis at 16:06.... iconic. If she could have known she'd be gone a year later from that August 2am gig.
I really had a great time and glad I brought a tent

lol ... we missed you ...
It is so sad now the farm is a corporate business park.
But at least the grounds look more or less exactly the same, and there is still live music held there - if not where the original stage was.
Another clickbait pack of rehashed mostly irrelevant images.
Yes this sucks!

Here's an idea: Woodstock in virtual reality (I'll provide my own smoke).
So few overweight people back then. I can only imagine what a festival that size would look like now.
A very groovy look at a far out event. Magic music history.
