This is pretty interesting. I've been learning your arrangement of Mipha's theme for a longggg while and my music teacher and I have been putting a lot of thought and effort into letting bass notes ring out, never really thought of having to mute conflicting ones. Learning songs from here on out i'll try to keep an ear out lol. Thanks for the tip! ❤️
The great fingerstyle guitarist Michael Hedges developed a crazy technique called string stopping, where he'd rest fingers on strings to completely control the duration of each notes. Well worth checking out if you're interested in developing these techniques further.
I've actually been noticing recently that my bass notes are ringing out all Willie Nill on some beginner Carulli pieces that I've been learning and was wondering the best technique for muting them. Timing on this couldn't be better. Thanks, Grandpa.
Haven't heard from you in weeks, you haven't been much posting lately, and the first thing I hear when I click on your new video is "Hey kiddos, it's your Grandpa Sam." Yeah that checks out.
A song that really helped me with this concept several years back is the Gran Jota by Franciso Tárrega. There are many bounces back between E and A with melodic ornaments
Man Im new in you channel I love your videos I just clicked on one that said Guiles Theme and loved it started watching all just today as a matter a fact deffenetly Subscribing!!!
I'm relatively new to classical guitar (1.5 yrs) and my teacher (I'm not a name-dropper, but I'm sure you've head of him) has just added muting to my practice schedule. Coming from a career as a wind player, I'm finding guitar hard enough! But, now this added layer of complexity is making me feel like I just started yesterday. Aargh!! BTW - what thumbnail are you using?
Question, could you/have you do/done a video detailing how to properly grow/file your nails for fingerstyle/classical guitar? Follow up question: Will you be my dad?
amazing advice of the uncle Sam. I always felt my style was very dirty, and now i understand it was because of letting the bass play. Master Chief, I need to know how you strengthen your nails, please.
Finally, we're no longer going to refer to strings by their pitch but by their location on the guitar!!! Play the next string up?? what do you mean its the higher pitch string? The next string up is a bass string!! FINALLY SAM HAS FREED ME FROM THIS VERBAL TYRANNY.
Letting two bass notes ring together and mix on porpose can also be cool in some situations, to create tension for example before releasing. But i guess it doesn't often suit in classical guitar.
It’s more of a stylistic choice, the classical guitarist yepes plays on a 10 or 11 string classical so he can get that sympathetic resonance which can give you a more full sound
Awesome video as always, big fan of your work, man. Would love to listen you play Octopath Traveler songs, such as A Sea Breeze Blows / Rippletide Town Theme. Peace, bro!
Hey Sam, any good resources for someone who played a bit of classical guitar in college and is jumping back in? It's been a good 7-8 years and I don't know what books or studies would be best. Thanks!
How about a video about how playing classical guitar sucks? Like, how everyone thinks you have a severe cocaine habit based on your finger nails? Or how it's the only guitar where strings break while you're not playing it? Or how when you break your thumbnail, it's like temporarily losing a limb. Muscle memory works against you? Also, horizontal stripes are never flattering...Hamburglar.
You know what would be a badass way to make money and make us suck less? If we could post video of us playing a song and you point out things you notice. I'd pay $ for that.
Mute your base!? How bout mute your face! This comment was submitted for algorithmic data purposes and not because Sam is a G. Definitely not because of his G status because, just so everyone knows, Sam G. Is not, in fact, a G. He also sucks at skeeball.
It’s the little things that make you hilarious, like the lack of pants
I also was wondering if anyone else noticed his lack of pants... I was like, "What's going on here?!"
As a bassist I agree that you should mute the bass at every given opportunity. My best notes are rest notes.
(cries in Matt Freeman.)
Actually, one of my favourite things about Bloc Party's bassist is his use of silence lol
The edits in this video are god tier. Congrats sir. A solid direction. Also, I learned much from this. Great job, especially without pants.
I love how instead of calling it a nique you called it a tech after explicitly saying you would do so lol

Michael hedges was incredible
Man learning stuff from you all the time. You’ve really helped my technique too sam I appreciate everything you do brother
So stoked to see more from you! I missed you...but hope you and Steve had an awesome tour!
Cool trick, if you remove your bass strings it is VERY HARD to create bad bass notes
You're one of my favorite people on RUclips, hahah. Love the vibe and love the editing! Music's pretty good too ;)
please more of this! practice routine and tipps for your tremolo would be awesome :)
@3:22 “Rest strokes [echo] rest strokes… [overlap] with my thumb.” 😆

I don't even play guitar and these videos are endlessly entertaining because of Sam's hilarious personality and edits lmao
I should probably tell you that "Nique" is the most literal french translation of "f*ck"
after inventing the word NIQUES you went ahead and referred to a technique as a TECH 2:45 - a wizard ye be
I really messed up with the consistency i agree
Rest strokes are my life but that tip for muting the string above is so dope. Guess I half sucked
Rest strokes, is that some kind of ancient swimming technique?
@@TripleBMusic it’ll have you swimming in poon once you get good at it
That's some fine editing ngl
Man Im new in you channel I love your videos I just clicked on one that said Guiles Theme and loved it started watching all just today as a matter a fact deffenetly Subscribing!!!
I am wearing SHORTS
Where's the fun in that
Good one! I love these nique vids. Hope to see more of them!
I can take it straight, man! Useful material sufficiently interesting in plain English. Thanks.
Thats why my Mallorca intro was so bad, thanx man, combined with the rest stroke bass style from Lauro's "Angostura" and its all 👍

I missed you welcome back man

Follow up question:
Will you be my dad?
"I'm gonna call them niques from now on in all my videos"
5 mins later, "Techs" xD.....
amazing advice of the uncle Sam.
I always felt my style was very dirty, and now i understand it was because of letting the bass play.
Master Chief, I need to know how you strengthen your nails, please.
Uncle Sam spreadin' the good stuff. I can finally stop recording all my bass notes separately one by one and crossfading them!
I am not even a guitarist but I clicked and I laughed, thanks
In the shots from the upper angle you can see Sam's bare leg. Is he sitting there in his... willy nill? :O
Thanks for the sweet 'niques Papa Sammo. I feel like a whole new man.
This is awesome bro
Hey Sam, big fan. Could you do an entire video about those sweet classical guitarist nails?
I never even noticed that my bass strings were all willie nill. Gotta work on that.
Nice, I'm practicing pieces where I have to mute the bass strings a lot (les acrobates, from Frédéric Costantino), it's really nice to have some tips!
you are an incredible human being
that's what you call damping nique
This reminds me that I would enjoy a collab with Charles Berthoud.
Nice bass traps bro
I'm loving that Pat Metheny cosplay
What is that white thing on your thumb nail? 😊 I am learning to play fingerstyle
"Nique" means f*ck in french and that made the whole thing even better
I came for the niques but stayed for the tech!

Alternate nique: put a pick in between the strings on 7 fret on low E A and D and strum it to make a clock bell sound
YAYYY Grandpa Sam!!
Sweet niques, brah
Damn, that thumbnail... who needs a pick?
How do you approach a unique piece of music?
You 'nique up on it.
Wait is it techs or niques my brain is scrambled I am not looking forward to never sleeping again
great techs, gonna try these later.
wats the section out of the guitar for? does it effect the sound or aesthetic?
It allows easier access to the higher frets. It doesn’t have any effect on the sound.
@@evankingmaguitars ah i see, cheers
DUDE IS THAT LEG HAIR - ????!!!!!!!!! LOL
thx but how to mute strings that aren't neighbors?
Yeah it's definitely a problem
"niques" that's a sik 'briev dawg
Wow this is very bassed.
You look like you could pass for Christopher parkening’s stoner son
Best nique is no pants. Don't forget that.
I think you and Davie need to do a bass challenge. 😂
Toca alguma música de Alundra. PLEEEEAAASSEEEEEE!!!!
No, you’re not my real dad. You can’t tell me what to do Sam 😤
Mmm yes. Prince Samuel Griffin. Mute them.
👍
The real secret nique is to play without underwear, right Sam, quick, someone call the cops.
The silence is a part of music
wow you have such pretty eyes
Uuhhh Millennial gpa
W-Willy Nill 😳

All this is 10x truer with Bass guitars. Not muting the strings properly creates a muddy mess.
I mute with my fretting hand like a some weird person
this is a lot easier overall without nails especially the rest strokes
I play exclusively without nails so yay
Ooohhhh yeeeeaaah
Clean as a whistle
Davie gonna be pissed!
Willy nilly
Mute your thumbnail, sir.
That thigh though
Bro, are you not wearing pants in this video? 🧐
Couldn't help but wonder the whole time if Sam was actually wearing any shorts or underwear...
Wait... there are people who don't do this?
Mute your base!? How bout mute your face!

Nudeniques
FYF
is this guy part arab or something i cant figure out what he is
killer player though
Is that FAKE thumbnail?
Or you could just play bass guitar finger style like a real man, which basically has muting built in lol
No
lost focus.... thummmmmmmmbbbbbbb.....
Eh, there's a time and place for muting, as all other advanced techniques. Shouldn't mute all the time as it weakens the player's diversity
Mate c'mon it's not "niques" it's "tekkers"
