I love the hell out of it but I just have never been able to improve much past a certain point. Even trying to follow all of Sams advice. But Breezy is a song I worked on nearly every day for a few months. I still struggle to play through the whole thing without messing up once, but it’s such a fun peaceful song. Sam - in all seriousness, you make Julia Florida even more special of a song. You have a way of adding your own magic to it that makes it even better. Even when I listen to John Williams play it, it just makes me think, “man, this just makes me wanna hear Sam play it.” I know you’ve worked hard on your skill but there’s something you have within you that can’t be learned - your guitar playing just bleeds with emotion and you’re my hero. Ok thats it. Thanks for being such an inspiring artist to us all!

Dude ill tell you right now you doing aquatic ruin from sonic 2 was the coolest thing id ever seen and had to learn it, took me FOREVER to learn, felt like tom hanks in cast away, totally normal guy wanting to learn a killer song, then stuck on this song (my island) and couldnt get off until i completed it, got the first riff down and it was like when tom created fire and was dancing around yelling "i have made fire!!" It was great, then a bunch of time passed and i felt like tom hanks on his last day on the island all ragged and ferrel looking but i finally got it down and got off that island and that song put me on a whole nother level. It launched me from suck to sick, posted it on my youtube page if you ever wanna see what youve taught, so thanks man youre the Barrios to my Sam Griffin

Great video Sam, I love your video game content but it's a treat to hear you play classical pieces. For me, it's not really a list but mostly a song, and it's Capricho Arabe. This song was out of my reach, but it's the first song that I dedicated myself to, sat down and grinded, and really really practiced for. It's definitely the piece that improved me the most as a guitarist.

Hey there Sam. Swedish sub here. Great video, as always! Anyway, about the "going from suck to sick" concept: I've been playing guitar since 6th grade and I'm 33 now. So that means that I should be really "Sick" at guitar right? Well, not really as much as I want. So what I am thinking is that good musical genes might play a big role here. That and how young you are when you start to play. But, what I've learned is that I appreciate the music that I write and play, dispite not being as good as, for example you. I'm like a snes game that is running on a nes hehe. The software is present, but the hardware struggles to keep up with the framerate.

I was hoping to see more lists from others, so, uh, here's mine:
Mason Williams - Classical Gas [incorrectly labeled from Limewire as Eric Clapton (!?)]
J.S. Bach - Bouree in Em (you know, that one)
J.S. Bach - Cello Prelude (yeah, also this one)
J.S. Bach - Joy of Man's Desiring (I usually play as a mashup with the Final Fantasy VI town theme, with a beautiful intro I learned from Doug Smith)
    Django Reinhardt - Tears
    Erroll Garner - Misty
Fernando Sor - Study #5 in Bm
    Federico Moreno-Torroba - Torija (Eligia)
Leo Brouwer - Un Dia de Noviembre

Classical Gas - Mason Williams (seems recurring here)
Asturias - Albeniz (never actually learned it, but god did I try!)
Variations on Guardame Las Vacas - Luis Narvaez
      Andecy - Andrew York
      Capricio Arabe - Tarrega
      Marley's Ghost - Andrew York
Study No. 9 - Fernando Sor
      Sakura - arr. Yuquijiro Yocoh

I suck at classical guitar, but i really like playing " Mood for a day " by Yes.
It's the closest i got to playing something that includes some nice bass + melody features on guitar.

This was very interesting. I think a lot of guitarists identify with your journey, regardless of level. I also started arranging video game music as a result of my own. Especially Nintendo music, with its ragtime-like base and syncopated melody.
I still suck, but my list goes like this:
    1. Anonymous Romance: found an old broken guitar at home with some tabs to an easy version of it in the case.
    2. Bach, BWV 995 - Gavotte I and II: blew my mind you can do multiple voices on guitar.
    3. Bach, BWV 997 - Gigue & Double: spent 2 years playing Bach
    4. Piazolla, Verano Porteño: found tango after trying to playing Barrios and Tarrega
    5. Lauro, Natalia and Andreina: easier to play but have interesting rhythm
    6. Dyens, Tango en Skai: I really wanted to play this because of the runs
    7. Bach, BWV 1006a - Prelude: I transferred to guitar after playing violin for many years
    8. whatever I'm currently learning/arranging, mostly video game music. Some video game music even taught the angle of my right hand was wrong.
then there are several pieces I have intermittently been working on for years.
    1. Tarrega, Recuerdos: one of the first pieces I tried playing, was not prepared.
    2. Barrios, Ultimo tremolo (una limosna): tried playing this because I couldn't play recuerdos, was not prepared.
    3. Barrios, La Catedral: also one of the first pieces I tried, was not prepared.
    4. Villalobos, Etudes: I should practice more

the album that stuck with me through my whole guitar life was (and is) Luiz Bonfa's Solo in Rio. I HAD to learn manha de carnaval... I always loved classical guitar music too and the first time I heard Barrios it absolutly blew my mind. Your list could've been 8 Barrios pieces and I would've just sat there and thought: yep, makes sense.

    1. Under the Bridge - RHCP - taught me to fingerpick while holding a pick
    2. Echo - Incubus - taught me bending can be a key, albeit subtle, part of a melody
    3. Bleed to Love Her - Fleetwood Mac - taught me to fingerpick without a finger resting on the pickguard to stabilize
    4. Why Georgia - John Mayer - taught me to slap
    5. Classical Gas - Eric Clapton (Mason Williams) - taught me to assemble my own arrangement from several (incorrect) tabs I found online
    6. F*** her Gently - Tenacious D - taught me that people love to sing along (perfect campfire song)
    7. Pain - Jimmy Eat World - Taught me to strum fast enough to shred the solo
    8. Shifts of Attention - Jimmy Wahlsteen - a fresh sound, with novel tuning and great rhythm and fingerpicking elements
Bonus: Bob-omb Battlefield - Sam Griffin (Koji Kondo) - instant classic, brilliantly arranged, taught me to slap properly. Link: ruclips.net/video/P6fdJKTyEC0/видео.html

    1. All of the Jack Johnson Songs - they teached me basic melody within chords, plus they have a good vibe and are chill to sing to. Especially Banana Pancaces, f-Stop Blues
    2. Starway to Heaven - : Not much to say, we've all been there.
    3. John Butler - Ocean : Opend my mind for different tunings. It was way over my skill level, but very fun to learn. Nice to explore the sound and the possibilities.
    4. Classical Gas : Introduction to Fingerpicking. I've discovered Tommy Emmanuel and wanted to play his stuff. Although I don't like this piece that much, it was a good start and fun to play
    5. Haba na Haba / To be or not to be : Everything from Tommy emmanuel and his master Chet Atkins. Tommys music is so full of love for the guitar and they inspire me to this day on.
    6. Innocent - Joe Hisaishi (Arrg. by Hernán J. González) : The Ghibli Scores were my introduction to classical guitar. I've never intendet to play classical guitar, but by playing arrangements of Movie and Game music, I slowly became unknowingly addicted to classical guitar.
    7. Kass Theme - Sam : I'm really glad to have stumbled upon this crazy fella. This Piece gave me the confidence to really get into classical guitar. Once i've learnd Kass theme it was the first Piece in my repoirtoire. Revali and Mipha shortly followed. I'm still working on the Phrasing and try to give them my own touch :) Really nice arrangements!
    8. Julia Florida - Barrios : Thank you for showing me Barrios and Tarrega! I fell in love the second i heard you play the first few measures. Now I'm like a lovesick teenager trying to hear and play everything from these two. This Piece is especially lovely and kinda reminds me of chopin.
    9. Capricho Arabe/ Recuerdos de la Alhambra - Tarrega (Love the Brandon Acker renditions) : This is the crazy good stuff. Working on these two to sound nice and flow easily. (especially the damn tremolo :/ )
    10. La Cathedral - Barrios : My long term goal and final Boss. It's really fun to play, but im not there yet (mov 3 is pure flex and expression )
Thanks for the inspiration, i would really love to see more videos like this.
Keep up the good work, I love your Arrangements :)

Man, I remember watching you go through all this. We would spend a month or two not seeing eachother, because that's how we rolled and I'd come in with some weird-ass music and I'd be like what are you listening to nowadays. When I had last left you it was Rage Against the Machine, the One Armed Scissor people (At the Drive In?) and then, that day, it was, like, y'know, Bach... Miss you bro, love you.

I agree that La Catedral is the best classical guitar piece. I remember the moment I listened to it for the first time, I was so amazed! Another pieces that blew my mind the same way are Koyunbaba, Constellations by Armand Coeck, Fuoco, El Sueño de la Razón Produce Monstruos and Sonata de Pasquini! Al brilliant pieces.

I really loved your video c: you know I have never fully commited to get classical guitar classes... but at some point I've learned some pieces, and also forget them... played them awfully, of course without any technique, but anyways, it is so awesome to try and play it. I agree with you Barrios is everything.

I learned the Bach cello piece and Capricho but I mostly stuck with Brouwer. I have add and I know more "first page of the song only" songs that I had to keep looking to find complete pieces I could get though.
Le Catadrel, I never even tried it. Well I tried the first four bars, too hard for me but i too love Barios , that Williams CD, I had it too. I think he does and did play Barrios better than anyone on a recording I can find, so that Williams album is a staple for me
I got into classical guitar from a Time Life Segovia album, and Bream's Guitarra. I used to watch Guitarra in the late 90's over and over and over. You like Bream right?
