The Fine Bros (FBE) had College Kids react to the Top 10 Songs of 2018 from the Billboard Hot 100. With the likes of Cardi B, Post Malone, and Drake ......I wasn't thrilled to do this one.

Billboard proves to me the words of little dicky "I grew up I wanted to be a star I wanted to be a rapper I wanted to be great I wanted to be a factor then I looked at nick cannon and realized talent didn't matter" if you caught the end of that you see the rap game coming from a person hugely influenced by punk and darker hip hop its gotten a lot worse than when fetty was in the game although props to him for selling with one eye get your bag and I will never not give anyone props for getting there bag so get that straight

That doesn't make much of a difference. I hated Seinfeld when it was actually relevant. It was boring. And my musical taste would typically be held as, by this crowd, as good. I am not fond of pop. I'm typically into what is called Classic Rock as that is what I grew up with. It is what I play on my guitar. And again I detest Seinfeld. So using that as an indictment of anyone is just dense.

You're not wrong when you say most college aged kids feel alienated.I've felt somewhat like an Outcast since I turned 16.I know I felt distanced from a lot of people my age,and even some older people I know.I can sit and talk about some of my favorite bands like crazy. For example,Alice in Chains.I tell people how I love their music and though some subject matter have no direct meaning to what I'm dealing with,I find a way to some meaning in it for myself.Layne Staley (original lead singer of the band.)Was asked a question about what the songs' meanings are about and his answer was this. The songs are things we're thinking about. Then we wrote them down, then you listen to them and whatever you think they're about. That's what they're about.I took that heart like he was saying if the songs have some meaning for you then it's for you.I also feel some relation too him and lead guitarist and backing vocalist (now lead vocalist,) Jerry Cantrell. Both had fathers who weren't there or were there but, might as well not been.I have that same relationship with my father. It's crazy you know man?A 21 yr old finding more meaningful of a relation with a band who made it big nearly 30 yrs ago over artist his own age.I try to get people my age into my bands but they say and I quote, "why do you listen to this devil worshipping garbage?"I guess they just go with what is popularized at time and think everything is unworthy of listening to.

Hey Ryan, hope you're doing well. I would say my favourite song from Alice In Chains is Damn That River, it changes quite a bit seeing as I literally love every song of theirs. I've always felt a connection to AIC and just like the quote from Layne, I find meaning through my own experience. I got to see them live which I'm eternally grateful for and I brought along a friend of mine so she could experience something new. I managed to get two of my friends to listen and like Alice In Chains which is pretty cool and I'm sure you'll find people who love the same music as you do. People can be dicks about these types of things and never fully give it a go, and it's so annoying when you tell people you listen to rock and they look at you crazy. At one point I was embarrassed to tell people what kind of music I listen to but now literally everyone I know, knows and they're totally cool with it and even encourage me to play my music at parties.

Mike there is a lot "why?" in this video, and I'm gonna give you an answer.
people are surrounded by these "hits" and they tend to be catchy so they get familiar with the beat also the artist's voice... a little time passes and the consumer starts to ask themselves if they like this "music",and the media, especially social media, is like "YES! OFCOURSe you Dooo CARDI IS QweeeeeNN!" So they think it's actually good .That's also the reason people start getting annoyed by these tracks when they're overplayed. Cause their adoration doesn't come from liking these songs ,but from being used to it.

Gotta say, that last bit about alienation really struck a chord with me, as I am one of those people who constantly feels alienated from peers and other people my own age due to taste in music. It might seem silly, but music is such a huge part of our lives. It has place almost everywhere you go, with everything you do, and that includes social situations. When you cannot connect with the same music as everyone else, you become the outlier, you are separate from the group, you are alone. And yeah, there are lots of times where I can't help but ask "what's wrong with me?"
But thankfully, not here. Cheers, Mike. This channel makes me feel less alone in world of bad pop music.

I don't understand why this disconnect is there spesifically because of the music. I am generally from the same mentality too. I generally listen to stuff like Dream Theater, Opeth, Bach etc. and many of my friends listen to whatever's popular. That never made me feel alienated. People can like wahtever they like. You come once to this life, let people have that freedom.

I guess what the kids like about certain rappers today is that they're really trying to sound somewhat 'educated' when it comes to rapping. The main thing a rap-head is listening for are:
    0. Soak in the beat (But it actually doesn't matter since a good rap is a good rap no matter what beat is playing).
    1. The message inside the lyrics. Good or bad, where is this going?!
    2. The flow / the technical side of presenting your lyrics towards the 'beat'.
    3. The actual musicality of the rap. Tonality, mix, syncopation and.. yeah.. fu*king etc.
I'm not a rap/hip hop fan at all but my older brothers are and this is what I learned is the importance in a rap song, the lyrics and the flow. The kids couldn't even say that.........

Jackson Maine once said: " Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it to have people listen to it, that's a whole other bag." Everyone can sing, but a real artist pass a message in a way that people hear it and then think of it. In todays music most of the artist dont pass a message that people can think of it, some artist try to pass this messages but ended up failing in every other aspect of the song.

It’s definitely more about the person and the look now than the actual talent and that is so heartbreaking. It’s all about what’s catchy and overused beats than actually putting in effort to be innovative and more creative. (Not saying these artists don’t put in any effort just not enough to really reach on a level more than just catchy.) I legitimately relate alot to the end of this video. I'm autistic and a metal fan. I already feel alienated enough from my peers. All of them being such big fans of acts like Taylor swift makes it so much harder to relate than it already is. Me being autistic makes it incredibly difficult to voice why I don't like their music, and why I like what I do. It's like walking on eggshells. It also makes it easier for them to just keep me at a distance.

    P.S. I'm a college kid....

      @conniethesconnie 4 года назад +2

Still going to disagree. There are plenty of years that had better music, had a bigger impact on the music world and have stood the test of time.
How about 1983, sure it gave us Thriller, but it when David Bowie reinvented himself as the thin white duke, The Police experimented by adding reggae to their songs, ZZ Top dumped replaced Frank Beard with a drum machine and released some of their best known songs. It was also a breakout year for the Metal industry with Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Ozzie Osbourne working their way into the mainstream success.
Then there is 1991 when Nirvana and grunge took the music world by storm, Metallica released the Black Album, Guns and Roses upped the ante by releasing two versions of Use Your Illusion and Whitney Houston gave us the best rendition ever of the Star Spangled Banner. Country music was seeing a changing of the guard as Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus were replacing George Jones and Kenny Rodgers.
Don't forget Rocks formative years in the mid 50's with Chuck Berry and Elvis or the late 60's with the Motown and the British Invasion.
I'm sorry but music from my generation sucks balls. That is why I spend most my time seeking out music from before I was even born.

I loved Mike Shinoda- Post Traumatic. Over Again really hit after my grandfather passed away. Running from my shadows, I listen to when I am feeling depressed, crossing the line, I listened to after my depression and health issues were declining. I like the storytelling Mike is expressing throughout the album, the album takes you on a journey. the first part of the album takes you through the darker side of grief, the second part takes you getting through it but never really and sometimes the pain is still there, the third part is about moving and staying strong. Nothing makes sense anymore, watching as I fall are also songs I enjoy. I write my own music( sometimes it has a positive message other times it is darker.) I write to express what I am going through. when my grandfather passed away I turned to music to deal with the grief, with my depression, suicidal thoughts at times, health issues; music helps me to remember that life will get better, and thankfully I am doing a lot better now than I was before. At the end of the day, music should connect to you and takes you on a journey.

Ariana's music isn't just popular and catchy, though; it's _leagues_ above most of her contemporaries. Of course it's perfectly valid if you personally dislike her music, but she does have undeniable skill far greater than anyone else currently active in the pop scene, and it's really not fair to place her in the same category as many other pop artists who, like you said, are enjoyed far more for their personality and catchiness than their actual musical skill.
I say all of that as someone who does still enjoy a bit of pop music, and who isn't a rabid Ariana fan. Even though I enjoy plenty of it, I admit that most pop artists aren't actually good on a technical level. Ariana clearly is, though, with her production being better than most, and obviously her incredibly strong voice being the defining trait.o

A lot of their material is creative and has some depth. Part of why they are developing a loyal fan base. Meanwhile Cardi B's fans will dump her in 2 years when they have forgotten about her songs and some new pop flavor of the month catches their attention.

So I do like Pop music but 90% of is not from music from today. There are some artists I like such as Kelly Clarkson or Lady Gaga because they can actually sing and sing well. but my favorite singers are people like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and lately Queen. Whitney and Celine because I consider them 2 of the best female vocalists of all time and Queen because Freddie Mercury's voice is legendary and can make people feel what he's singing.

I can answer pretty much all of your questions: it’s catchy. The average person in the mainstream doesn’t know any music theory, they’ve never listened to classical music outside of a Disney movie and they like this kind of production. The melodies are simple, yet perfectly written by the artists and/or their writers to apply tension and release in the chord progression and melodies so that it gives the most pleasure to the most people the most often. This leads to them being repetitive and musically boring, but also, that’s why people like it. Also, on another note, most of these songs are built on electronic production, in electronic production, as I’m sure you’re aware, the synthesiser and sampler are the instruments of the producer. In most of these songs the things the people love about the song are the work of the producer and not the artist. As an electronic producer this makes me very angry. All of the actual musical work is being done by the people getting 0 recognition in many of these songs.
I agree with you on most of this though for different reasons. The vast majority of the music on the radio is complete trash. I say that as a metal head, and electronic producer, a punk fan, a rock fan, and an unashamed fan of fucking skrillex.
Maybe that’s something both electronic and metal fans can agree on.

I completely agree. As someone who gets alienated and called a satanist for the music I listen to I really appreciate you being a voice for us. 99.9% of popular music now is dog shit and the artists that actually care about their music and care about making a decent product to actually connect with people get buried by drug addicts and strippers who think they can sing and it is infuriating. Why not give spotlight to a band like Beartooth whose goal is to reach out to people on the verge of self harm and try to convince them not to do it. They have a line in the song Body Bag that says: “One life and one decision. Make sure it ends with you still living.” But instead of that being played... we get Bodak Yellow and In My Feelings. I’m glad you are making a stand for decent music and for all of us who get outcasted

Thank you mike. The last few minutes described me perfectly, I’m in college and I’ve never had any use for pop music, and sometimes I wondered if I simply don’t give it a chance because I like being contrary, or maybe I’m just a prick. And while that may be partly true, I know the real reason is because it is meaningless garbage. It’s the same reason that for me, a guy who grew up on country music, can’t listen to country radio, because it is mass reproduced, generic, meaningless bullshit. And because of people like you I can be proud of knowing I’m not simply drinking the koolaid, I’m genuinely thinking about what’s going into my mind. So thank you for giving us a voice Mike, keep on rocking 🤘

So there is a song by a band that Mike doesn't particularly love and doesn't know why they became popular but, I love. That song is Daddy by Korn!
Now I am going to accept Mike's challenge and explain in specific terms why I love the song Daddy by, Korn!
Daddy is by far Korn's darkest song. It is the song in which the lead singer Johnathan Davis reflects on an experience where he was raped by a neighbor and no one believed him.
The song is particularly dark in it's arrangement. The bass is really heavy and provides a dark edge in the way the chords are written. The guitars also have this darker tone. The song makes use of lower chords and a dark note progression. The song is arranged in D minor but also makes frequent use of sharper notes.
(I don't really know much about music theory or writing notes so if I'm wrong just let me know. I am interested in hearing more about the writing of this song from a music theory prospective.)
This provides the listener with a sense of fear. The sounds this song makes are really unsettling and horrifying and makes you feel as though this is the sound you would hear if you were being raped.
The lyrics expresses the feelings Jonathan Davis felt in his experience.
I love this song because I connect with it in a very personal and profound way.
I was raped when I was a kid. I felt similar emotions that Johnathan expressed in the song. I would have theses introspective self dialogues to try to understand what happened to me. I then try to take those intrinsically negative emotions and turn them into positive energy so that I can empathize with people who have had similar experiences and try to bring some positive change so that they feel less alone.
That is why I love Daddy by, Korn. It lets you know that even when these horrible things happen to you know that you are not alone and that there is someone who cares. Please speak up if you or someone you know is dealing with rape. It's hard to talk about but, if you can find the courage to be honest with yourself the truth will free you .
