  • The Fine Bros. are at it again. Getting the reactions of people who don't really get music......I guess that's the point? Anyway, Justin Bieber helped a couple of Latin artists (Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi) top the Billboard charts in America with their new hit Despacito. How will Mike react today?

I can 100% guarantee that 90% of these pop artist fans doesn't even have a single album of their fav, they just listen to the singles dropping on YT with vids. Reason why I hate these teenage fangirls/boys

    • @Soulful96QC
      @Soulful96QC 7 лет назад +17

      @Jeremy Hayes In some cases thats true but for the most part thats bullshit, you have a lot of teenagers and young adult millenials out there who be buying 3-6+ pairs of shoes, always get the new iPhone, order food with added tip 24/7, and still outright refuse to pay a small price of 10-15 dollars for an album.

    • @Joaninhaa12
      @Joaninhaa12 7 лет назад +3

      Boy, if it was only pop fangirls listening to those songs on youtube, the videos wouldn't have as many views. The songs are catchy and they are everywhere; it makes sense that even people who are not fans of certain artists would listen to the singles. Also, while I still like to buy albums and I'm willing to spend 10-15 dollars, I can understand why those kids wouldn't spend money on it - you have things like youtube and spotify nowadays.
      Also, a fun fact you might find interesting: I used to be quite into korean pop and the album sales for popular groups are insane. Many fans often buy dozens of albums.

    • @shushant1757
      @shushant1757 7 лет назад +1

      Kpop is for sheeps.. Everyone knows that it's more about glamour rather than the quality of music. + do you realize that views increases even if a single person watches it for million of times? not everyone listens to that kinda' music and even if they do so then it's 1 time at max. It's basically the teenage fangirls/boys going mad on those. Ever found a well made song make it to past 1billion views on YT? Yet, fucking "All about the bass" has 1 billion + views.. Seriously, why would anyone find that shit interesting apart from diehard fangirls/boys and some strippers who can throw some booty to the song?
      And the album version of many songs is different to the version on YT, at least that's what I've found in most music that I listen to. + There are some hidden gems in the album itself that the musician doesn't put out as a single.. Bear in mind that I've nothing against pop music at all, there are some good artist in the genre itself but the way people judge a musician's quality and ability based on YT views or billboard rank pisses me off..

    This is not representative of actual Latin American culture, It's generic commercial pop music. Try Natalia Lafourcade Musas 1 & 2, Lila Downs La Linea, Susana Harp Xquenda, Mercedes Sosa vivo en suiza, Soledad Bravo canciones revolucionarias de Latino America, Inti Illmani, Victor Jara (RIP and to all those lives lost in the 1973 coup d'etat). Latin America in many aspects has been about struggle, beauty, and community. Other genres and not reggaeton express the themes of this culture. Granted I enjoy reggaeton from time to time, but I rather listen to Latin American Folk.

    I saw an interview that one of the Spanish speaking artists did and he kind of explained what happened. Apparently Justin heard their song in a club and called them up saying he wanted to be on it. They got back with all the lyrics he was going to sing already translated into English, and he said that he wanted to sing in Spanish... now after doing that how do you NOT commit it to memory??
    And I do agree that a lot of Latin music sounds the same, but it's because there's a specific way to dance to each genre. For instance salsa, bachata, cha cha, kumbia, meringue etc they all have certain steps that correspond to rhythm of the songs. So they don't necessarily sound similar out of conformity, but more because they need to fit the dance steps that come with that genre. So if you go out to the Latin club again 😉👍 You'll see that people will dance much differently to salsa songs than they do bachata songs. The song that comes on determines how you dance to it. So nothing much new happens within the genre, it's more that a whole new one has to be created.
    Some of these genres and dances have been around for a long time, but bachata and reggaeton are the "newer" ones. (This kind of has to do with what the boy in the video said about reggaeton being about sex) The older dances (for example salsa) are mor more about flirtation, working the dance floor and the crowd, and the overall art of the dance. But reggaeton was very blatant in the fact that it was "about sex". Most Latino homes are strictly Catholic, that being said, the fact that sex was so out in the open instead of being this thing that was only alluded to was very much frowned upon. Also this is kind of the only genre that doesn't have any dance "steps" (I think it's actually the first AND the only). The way you dance to it is you just 'bump and grind'. The fact that sexuality was so out in the open with this genre gave it a "trashy" reputation which is why it was "underground". It is much more accepted and celebrated now that sex isn't considered as "shameful" in the Latino community.
    Sorry for the novel, I have trained professionally in most of these dances and my mom is from Ecuador so these songs/genres are very much a part of my culture and very dear to me. Just thought I'd share some of my knowledge/experience in case you were interested 😊 I really enjoyed your video! And as always enjoyed listening to you give your honest opinion 👌

      Actually, yes... In Puerto Rico you play dominos everywhere, bars, the beach, even on the street. Especially in 'barriadas' (slums, for lack of a better word) like La Perla, which in were this MV was filmed, people tend to play like that... in Old San Juan there are tables in public spaces to play dominos.. it is a big cultural thing in our country and (I think, but not so sure) the rest of the Caribbean.

I really don't like it, as many people have said in the comments, it's the same beat and they sing about the same stuff all the time (sex, drugs, lavish lifestyle). The part about the language really got me. If you didn't bother to memorize the words to the song, then you shouldn't be singing it. Especially if it is in another language! That's what frustrates me a lot. If foreign fans who don't speak English, can memorize the lyrics to their fav English songs, and sing them word for word at a concert, then high and mighty Beaver doesn't get a pass.

      Hi, Become The Knight I send you a cordial greeting from South America. I just finished watching your video and I think you're a bit confused about our music, but I do not blame you or surprise me because most Americans do not know much about it. You say that every "fucking" Latin pop song has the same rhythm and sound, monotonous and repetitive, ok, first: "despacito" is not a pop song is reggaetón or as it is also identified in some areas of latin america, urban. Second: that rhythm that you describe that have all the "fucking" Latin songs is the base of reggaetón all sound like that because it was born several years ago in Panama and has been evolving, believe me when I say that before it was more repetitive, even annoying I would say but it was conceived of that way and we must respect that. Third and last: Latin pop songs sound quite different from reggaeton there are many exponents of this genre in Latin America and I assure you that they do not look anything like it. You say the song has risen so much (1st place on Billboard hot 100) because of Justin Bieber, yes, you're right, you can not deny, although the song already had a huge success in the world Justin's inclusion gave it a new impetus And would certainly never have made it to the top of Billboard had it not been so. Have a good day.

    despacito was already a worldwide hit since its release, topping the charts on all europe, latin america, some asian countries, etc so justin bieber only helped the song to be more popular on english speaking countries because no offense but english countries are very close-minded so unless a song has some of english on it it won't top the charts. which is sad

      PSNPS496 As if charts mean anything anymore. Songs that end up at the top of the charts are there because record companies buy their songs spots on those charts. And because most people only listen to what's on top lists on spotify, those songs automatically become popular, whether they're good or bad.

Like it’s literally the furthest from original a song can be, but since americans are completely unaware of this trend, it gets praised...

Many people who don't understand music just think "oh different language it's culturally diverse" but when you get to the meat of it yeah you're correct. It serves its purpose for clubs, same as the mumble rap genre, but there's no real diversity. Your videos are always a good fucking time.

    WARNING: I am drunk, so this is an essay and I probably won't remember typing this
    I personally suggest watching the adults react to the solo One Direction songs
    AS FOR BIEBER, there is only one defense I have for him, as someone who actually listened to all his album's from the beginning, Biebers voice legit sounds better on this kind of instrumentation then the EDM production or even the "soft guitar" shit he pulled with Love Yourself
    As for the sound of Reggaeton, and as a pure Latino, the genre has held it's moments from Selena in the mid 90s to even Daddy Yankees earlier hit in the mid 2000s with "Gasolina", it's a genre that will always have it's moments but unfortunately will never truly break out. They can popularize Shakira and Los Lonely Boys and shit like that, but you are one hundred percent correct that pop is pop no matter how they slice it. Hell, the only reason this is a hit personally is not because of Bieber but because it fits the mold of every summer "OMG let's lyk go to da beech n drink alkahall" song (misspelled on purpose)
    Finally, and this is just one last minor counter point to Bieber on this track...I legit don't think Bieber did shit for this track. As mentioned, I think he sounds good but between the staleness of current hits (A person can only hear Chainsmokers, Bruno and Sheeran so many times), but he legit only had one verse. If he had the whole song and maybe threw in the chorus and Daddy Yankee rap, maybe, but one verse hardly makes a song

It's the girliest, most sappy shit imaginable in one song (case in point: despacito), or the most disgustingly misogynistic shit out there in the next one ("cuatro babies", for instance). I'm from Colombia, another place where that shit picked up like wildfire and I even struggle to put into words how much I hate that fucking shit. what i've noticed is a lot of spanish music uses the same beat depending on their genre. reggaeton, salsa, cumbia, bachata, banda, etc. basically all sound the same within their genre. for example, pick any two random romeo santos bachata songs and you'll have a hard time differentiating them. the songs that become hits in those genres just have something special about their melodies and i think despacito really achieved that. as far as justin hopping on it, i had no problem with it. the problem i have with it is all the ignorant music listeners that completely ignore the word REMIX in the title and assume it's his original work.
    good video. earned a sub.

      Woah, don't get salsa mixed up with the other genres. The salsa is musically more complex than the reggaeton and the bachata, and you actually can differentiate the songs in it. It's just that it's a dance genre, is something that you would hear in a party and dance to it (it's hard to dance to it if you're not used to it, it's complex) Just listen to Willie Colon.

    just thinking about it rushes my heartbeat
    I'm liking it more than usual already
    all my senses are asking for more
    there's no need to hurry it
    Slowly
    I want to breath in your neck slowly
    let me tell you things at your ear
    so you remember if you're not with me
    Slowly
    I want to strip kissing you slowly
    I sign in the walls of your maze
    and I make your body a manuscript
    Go up x5
    I want to see your hair dance
    I want to be your rythm
    I want you to show my mouth
    your favorite places (favorite, favorite "baby")
    Let me overtake your danger zones
    Till causing your screams
    and forget your last name
    (Rap part)
    If I ask you for a kiss, come, give it to me
    I know you're thinking about it
    I've been some time trying it
    Mummy, this is giving and giving
    you know your heart with me goes boom boom
    you know this babe is looking for my boom boom
    come, try my mouth to know how does it taste
    I want, I want, I want to see how much love fits you
    I have no hurry, I want to take the ride
    starting slowly, then wildly
    step by step, smooth smoothly
    we're getting closer, bit by bit
    when you kiss me with that skill
    I know that you're malice with care
    Step by step, smooth smoothly
    we're getting closer, bit by bit
    And this beauty is like a puzzle
    but to solve it I have the piece (listen)
    Slowly
    I want to breath in your neck slowly
    let me tell you things at your ear
    so you remember if you're not with me
    Slowly
    I want to strip kissing you slowly
    I sign in the walls of your maze
    and I make your body a manuscript
    Go up x5
    I want to see your hair dance
    I want to be your rythm
    I want you to show my mouth
    your favorite places (favorite, favorite "baby")
    Let me overtake your danger zones
    Till causing your screams
    and forget your last name
    Slowly
    Let's do it in a beach of Puerto Rico
    till the waves scream "Oh, my"
    so my stamp stays with you
    Step by step, smooth smoothly
    we're getting closer, bit by bit
    I want you to show my mouth
    your favorite places (favorite, favorite "baby")
    Step by step, smooth smoothly
    we're getting closer, bit by bit
    Till causing your screams
    and forget your last name
    Slowly
    Step by step, smooth smoothly
    we're getting closer, bit by bit x2

    I would totally watch reactions from you to songs in general! They could be popular songs in the united states or maybe songs from rock artists that are huge in places like latin, america or asia, but of course aren't known in the united states, or what ever you think it might be interesting... I guess what i am saying is that these "react to people reacting to music" videos are great, but just you reacting to music could also be a good series!! (needless to say... suscribed)

    being from Puerto Rico, country of the singers Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi, i am damned to listen to this 2x more than the usual, it gets more annoying the 50th time you listen to this in a day lol. Interesting for you to make this video Mike!

    Man the points you mention in the video are exactly what i thought about the music. To make it short. I think its a good song to dance to with your loved one. But thats it.

    I know I'm late, but I really love how open you were towards the music and accepting the genre in general, and understanding why the original is good in it's way. You are right in the fact that it isn't great music, but the vibe the melody gives along with the latin style really gives off a great feeling of dance that's difficult to resist.

    for me this gets into a bigger picture then just reggaeton is shit, if you compare it to prog, yeah, its shit, but most music has some kind of effect on different people, it gets into a difference of musician and artist, in my eyes, a musician uses scaled, structured notes to play in such a way to impress an audience, while an artist can use sound as a medium to make intense melodies and riffs to completely blow peoples minds, instead of just another guitar solo, this is why I love genres like doom metal and stoner rock(also why nirvana is good, so fuck you mike). bands like dreamtheater are somewhere in between imo, so while reggaeton might not be very impressive, and I mean it definitely isn't for me, but you have to admit if you heard it at a club or something, it would make you want to get up and dance. (Justin Beiber ruined it though)

    • @chucuar
      @chucuar 7 лет назад +3

      Brady Jameson I absolutely agree with you, reggaeton it's definitely not my music and kinda hate it to be honest, but song it's actually enjoyable, especially if you're in a club or a party

    • @dominikhanus9320
      @dominikhanus9320 7 лет назад +4

      There is not single genre that is ''shit''. But every genre has bad and good stuff. There is some awful prog and there is some awful Reggaeton. This song is not good. Mike likes to talk about himself as that extremely knowledgable guy who knows everything...and often it just isn't that way at all...There was many times when he was praising muse for example, but totally put radiohead down...while radiohead's first 3 albums are the biggest influence on muse...and are objectively superior band

    • @bradyjameson3719
      @bradyjameson3719 7 лет назад

      fair enough, I agree that every genre has an upside to it, but there still is music that can be put in a category that doesn't have a solid rhythm or hook, and would be considered not as good or bad, everyone has there taste and that's awesome, but for me, its hard to compare music like this, even though it is catchy and easy to dance and sing along to, to a really well put together doom or grunge song

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 лет назад +3

      +Brady Lol! Way to slip that in there \m/
      +Dominik That is incorrect. Radiohead was not an influence on Muse. Look at some of their interviews. Dom claims in one interview in 2006 that Radiohead was a major influence on the band when they were 16 but Chris and Matt blatantly have said that it not the case. Both bands share similar influences and started their bands around the same time. Only Maybe I'm right about more things than you give me credit for ;P Also don't misconstrue apathy for putting a band down.

    I'm full Mexican bro and grew up with people around me listening to Daddy Yankee and he's just an average rapper but since he raps in Spanish he's blown way out of proportion. I know for sure there's a lot of people with some sort of Latin heritage that like this song just because they think it hits home with them.

    Hi! Great breakdown of the music and video. It seems like the running theme of this video can be applied to any country and to any neighborhood. You can say the cultural elements are the young and the old from the hood hanging out on the street, listening to muisc, dancing and/or playing dominos (called capicu). Then it continues into the club and then seen all the way to the end. The conga drums at the end are a style of Puerto Rican music reflecting the lands past ancestry called "Bomba y Plena" that's percussion driven with the congas.

    When you read the translated lyrics you realise that it's exactly like every other generic pop song about sex but people act like it's the best thing to come out of Latin America since Santana. I can understand having pride in your culture and your culture being represented on a global scale (I still feel a tinge of pride when people talk about Charlize Theron and I don't even like her that much) but it's just not a particularly noteworthy song. If you released an English version it would be lost in the top 40 shuffle within days. Granted I'm not Latino so maybe I'm just not in the right position or frame of mind to understand the pride it evokes but it seems like people are backing the wrong horse
