    I'm not a big fan of Manson's music, but he's an interesting man, that's for sure. Go watch some interviews with him, he's pretty fckn educated. Yes, he's weird, but he knows his shit, and knows a lot about arts and has an interesting view on things. I think that's why his music is that stuff, he's more like an artist, not a "musician", and artists are strange

      Music is an art, but not all musicians are artists. A lot of musicians make empty beats for the sole purpose of money and fame. Actual ARTISTS are passionate and mainly want to portray a message.

      Of course Manson is a musician. But not all musicians are ARTISTS. Manson is also an artist because he puts passion into his work...

    There was a famous interview with Manson after a shooting (I presume it was Columbine, but it might have been another one) where the interviewer asked him what he would say to the kids who did it, and he replied, "I wouldn't say anything, I would listen to what they had to say, because that's what no one did." I think that controversial and shocking artists, such as Marilyn Manson, do serve an important purpose in society because they make you re-evaluate your personal beliefs. When Marilyn Manson wipes his ass on the American flag or destroys a Bible, I think we (subconsciously or consciously) examine why we feel shock towards the desecration of a piece of fabric or some paper. At this point, we either choose to continue in our belief in these symbols, or we reject them. Both options are valid, but either way, I think artists like Marilyn Manson are beneficial, as they promote individual thought instead of simply going along with the way of thinking that you have been socialised to have.

    The reason she would say that "it's like an atheist music video" is because she's ignorant to the definition of atheism and how it has zero correlation to satanism or in that case demonic symbolism. (Atheism-disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.) Big fan btw.

    • @SadPeterPan1977
      @SadPeterPan1977 7 лет назад +26

      I can't say I'm shocked by her saying it. Atheism is one of the least tolerated 'beliefs' in the US with over 50% of Americans saying they should be banned from publicly displaying atheism and over a third saying they should be banned from becoming President, teach in schools or hold a rally. I guess it's a short stretch from saying that lack of religious belief means you should be a 2nd class citizen to thinking satanic imagery must be atheism.
      Maybe Manson created his persona and image precisely to piss those people off but in terms of what atheism actual is about satanism is just another part of the same fairytale we reject. If most people seem to find comfort in their fairytales then fine but atheists don't seem to need that comfort blanket.

    • @stickystick1839
      @stickystick1839 7 лет назад +8

      Vas Diexus to be fair, LaVey's "religion" was more about you respecting yourself as a human, and the ones that are around you, it was called satanism because at that time any religion that was not christian was considered satanism, but he didn't worship the devil, so he didn't start satanism as it is today, he actually founded some rules, and came up with a philosophy that a society could really well live by, his phylosophy was more like atheism

    • @diexbag7637
      @diexbag7637 7 лет назад +12

      I was pretty sure it was called Satanism because he knew Christians would never read something called the Satanic Bible and they proved his point. And he did start it, as I said, the large majority of people calling themselves Satanists are atheists who follow a similar philosophy, I doubt there are a lot of actual devil worshipers, at least worshipers of the 'evil incarnate' interpretation (like Richard Ramirez)

    I agree with you for the most part, you always do great analyses. Few words to clarify some things:
    Marilyn Manson is actually a very clever, reasonist, atheist guy who has just said that Satan is a misunderstood character in the christian mythology.
    While I agree that his vocals are not that great, his music, lyrics, messages are phenomenal. He has always said that he's essentially an artist, art is his passion. Of course he wouldn't be there without the shock value, but that's the point, he's trying to shock all these people that are stuck in a religious, capitalistic, nationalistic, modern-day "philosophy". Either you become a fan or a hater. That's why he's often being labeled as a satanist, that's one of the best ways to trigger most religious folks out there.
    Also, he has a good amount of actually great songs out there, totally worth your time.

      Well... Lucifer is the greatest deciever of all. He can make you believe that he is not such a bad guy and such so... to me, as a Christian, he is fooled by Satan to believe he is not as bad as he was depicted in the Bible. It even says that the greatest trick he would play is making others believe he does not exist. I am not making you all believe what I believe in, but this is coming from what I learned from the Bible.

      No this isn´t meaning of words that are in Bible. Manson is very similiar to Christ (like a rebellious popular figure in society) and Lucifer is not even in Bible and originally it is not christian but roman mythology figure made from words "lux" = light "ferre" = carrier. Mythological christian story (not biblical!!!) is about argument between God and Lucifer (Lucifer was like shiniest star in the sky, most powerful angel). Lucifer for some reason fall from Heaven because his opinion on humans (or world, or universe - whatever) was different than God´s. Lucifer is first rebel and even him is very similiar to Christ. That´s about your knowledge of Biblie. I like Marilyn and I think he is very needed artist by society (even by christians)...

    Funny thing is, I think this is the point of Manson. By pushing it over the edge, he makes you look into that darker side of human mind, discuss it, learn it, perhaps seek ways to avoid it - after all, how can you avoid a danger you are totally unaware of, or even decieving yourself that it doesn't exist?
    Even in this video, I may say, that Manson's music unwantingly caused the discussion about morality and etc.
    P.S. Yep, look at those comments. That's the point - even here, in comments, people go discussing value of faith, religion, freedom and etc.

    You should try his last album, The Pale Emperor. It's more of a bluesy type rock based on atmosphere, instead of industrial. Rolling Stone had it as the best metal album of 2015, and even though I disagree with that. It still might be his best album. It's really stripped down to mainly drums and bass. You might like it if you can get past his voice. The main reason I even started listening to some of his music is because of his voice. He might not be a great singer, in the traditional sense, but his voice is unique.

      The Pale Emperor is a REALLY good album - Not his best, that will always be Antichrist Superstar! But easily better than the rest of his output and I'd love to see Mike react to Killing Strangers, Third Day of a Seven Day Binge or Odds of Even.

      It's just that I think his songs are about the point that society is kinda fucked, and he did have a bit of vocal talent a while ago before he did two billion doses of meth. he is not trying to sound like Freddie mercury he is trying to spread a message. Hey at least he is not singing about how much money he has or how many cars he has.

    I am a big Marilyn Manson fan since I was 5 years old, and I totally get your opinions about him and it is cool foo.
    I myself don't focus on vocal talent and shit like that , he is just a distorted sounding artist that has actually helped me alot through my teen rage and my self expression. Don't really see him as gross at all, I find manson as a very smart down to earth weirdo.
    You got rad tastes in music dude ,keep going. Congrats on the subs
    And dude,.. not all hip hop is like that, there is interesting hip hop like Tyler the creator that is not all about money and shit. NWA was an amazing hip hop band that was fucking hardcore in it's time, be a lil bit more open about rap and hip hop.

      Thank you for making these points about Manson. I agree completely. I love Mike, but I think he has generally missed the social commentary and message that Manson portrays in an intelligent yet extreme way. The "gross" comment especially leads me to believe he hasn't quite actually looked into what Manson stands for, because what he does with making people consider other perspectives on hot button issues is quite the opposite of gross, I would even consider it noble. But oh well I guess.

  • @ddilley83

    The thing you have to remember about Marilyn Manson, was the time period in which he gained popularity. Yes, he was shock value for shock value's sake. That is what was needed at that time, and he provided that niche. This was a time when practically every hard rock and heavy metal band, and every hip hop artist were being slammed in mainstream media, and by politicians as being evil, satanic, and causing violence. Ozzy was sued for his song Suicide Solution, for crying out loud. We needed someone like Manson to come along and push that envelope farther, and push back against mainstream society's idea of puritanism.

  • @hemtin6764
    @hemtin6764 7 лет назад +71

    Manson isn't your plain Jane cookie cutter musician. He's more of a artist than a musician. It's shocking but there is a point to it all if you pay attention. Also music is just the vessel he uses to get his point across. Not make a pretty lil song ppl like to hear and is why vocals aren't really important when talkin about Manson unless you're one of those live performance snobs. Plus it doesn't seem like you've ever focused on him lyrically just saw the shock part and was just put off and left it there. Lol

      @gigachad192 7 лет назад +6

      Exactly. I just commented earlier and said that if he would actually look past the shock value and actually pay attention to the lyrics, he would (hopefully) realise the philosophical depth and complexity of his lyrics. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.

    Acts like Manson, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Alice Cooper are about the entire experience...audio and visual. The music is made as much to compliment the visuals as much as it is made to stand on its own. These are acts that are far better seen live, which is the perfect environment to get all aspects of their act as they are meant to be experienced.
    Think of their music more like a movie soundtrack than as a stand alone piece of music
    Also, credit where it's due Mike, very fair and accurate description of Manson. If shock rock acts aren't your thing then yes, you won't love it. Shock fans value the visual as much as the music, which runs counter to a music fans like yourself that dissect the music itself and love to nerd out on music theory.

    I still remember the day I picked up Golden Age of Grotesque, and really digging that new KMFDM vibe he had, and then opening up the liner notes and seeing he'd picked up Tim Skold. I went through a Manson phase, and what I took away from it was that the guy thrives on narrative. In one of my shortest ever meets, I gave him a fist bump and a "go kill em'" walking past him in the back hall on his way onstage. He said kinda surprised "Hey. Thanks man." Nervous. Literally just 2 dudes walking opposite ways down a hallway. Fist bump. Good wishes. Devil horns. that's it. I think he had a case of pre-show butterflies combined with probably expecting me to fanboy and/or stab him. This was Mile High Stadium, Denver, 2000. About 20 min away from Columbine, and there were protestors outside the venue with picket signs and chanting, and they were trying to get us to trade our METALLICA tickets for tickets to the Nuggets instead. Denver peeps, you know what a joke that was back then. Cop pulled me over...gave me a ticket...to the Nuggets.
    Anyways. Manson. Cool dude.

    I actually listen to manson, and I like it. Kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I happen to be one of those people that believe any form of self expression (as long as you don't hurt people) is OK, and I agree with him on a lot of social issues, so that probably helps.
    But everything past 2000 was absolute horseshit.
    Also fun fact: Marilyn Manson the musician originally was him thinking that media is so infatuated with dark themes that all he had so do was do controversial themes. Then he became a full artist like today.
    And the columbine shooters actually though manson was a fucking loser.

    I completely agree with you, my parents rarely ever monitored what we listened to, but taught us to look at music for what it is, a piece of art, not to be taken literally. I listen to all sorts of music not just in the metal/rock/alternative genre. However, eminem went through a similar case back in the early 2000’s and another case even blamed Grand Theft Auto for their child’s behavior... like you’ve stated you could argue that was part of the environment but it boils down to the parents not being a parent to their kids. I love Manson's "trilogy" (Antichrist, Mechanical Animals, Holy Wood), but I rarely visit any of his other material.
    EXCEPT!
    Eat Me, Drink Me is, to me, one of his finest albums. For Manson, it's a very naked album in that he tries to provide vocal melodies more than his typical shout-talking thing. There's also some wicked guitar work on that album, including several great guitar solos. I was hoping he was going in this direction from there on out, but he immediately went back to trying to recapture the '90s again. Eat Me, Drink Me is mature, and closer to classic rock/metal than anything he's ever done.

      So I know this is a really late response, I watched a recent interview with Manson and Danny Elfman that took place around 2006 after the release of "this is Halloween" and Manson had commented that this project reminded him that he could sing and inspired him to get back into the studio. Following if which Eat me, Drink me came out in 2007. One of my favorite album of his, and has really only grown on me more as I've grown older.
