@@Joshy- I can't imagine how beta/mentally ill you have to be to to have random people online call you bad at a video game and then go on to quit everything. Random people with no skill whatsoever harassing actually good players into quitting a game or leaving a platform is the most repulsive behaviour that we repeatedly see from the likes of Twitter and Reddit, time and time again.
I was in my first (and last) owc that year (2017). I represented Sweden and was already shaking from nerves hours before the matches. I performed well enough I would say but still to this day I think about what I could've done differently to improve my performance. I wasn't aware of the amount of hate Alien got but I knew of him back then, it's very sad to see that a minority of toxic players can have such a terrible effect on some players. I wish everyone not just in osu! but in gaming in general could just come to respect eachother regardless of results. Nowadays I only play for ranked score, I recommend everyone to do the same, the same being play what you find most fulfilling, don't care what others think of you in the game, play for you!
The pressure is really high when you’re playing in a international world-class tournament with many people watching you. I still don’t understand how people can still talk shit about Alien and to be honest, he didn’t even deserve it, the toxic side of the community just had to bully him for his “poor skills”. Personally, I think he could’ve been a top 100 even up till this day, and I still don’t know why the community has to do that to him
That day I was genuinely angry at the community as a whole for misrepresenting Alien's performance so blatantly. Thank you for including my Tweet at the time, and for reminding people of their existence. While I don't look back too fondly at my amount of swearing, those were real emotions coming from someone who was so very disappointed; so I stand by them.
I had a chance at participating in OWC in 2017 myself (for a country that didn't have that many top players back then) and decided not to because of exactly this reason. The community was terribly toxic then, way more than now imo, and just thinking about having thousands of people judging you for every little mistake can be especially tough when you're young. Hope Alien is doing good these days.
This is honestly so disheartening Like imagine being a top-tier player with a potential of becoming one of the *best* players. You do extremely well on your first tournament, yet people still don't really like you as "your impact on the tournament was minimal". Then you do your second tournament, and your team doesn't do too well but you did alright too. And everyone just starts obliterating you and even sending death threats because your team was playing worse than earlier and it's not even your fault. This all is perfectly said in Mike Tyson's quote "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."
I think this is a good lesson to learn when looking at cases such as Umbre with team Germany, where a lot of people were very quick to throw him under the bus and even mock him for what they percieved as poor perfomances during the World Cup. People are entitled to their opinions when it comes to gameplay, but it's good to remember that's just what it is, a game.
Umbre is literally my 2nd most favorite osu player tied with dustice and only behind whitecat/blackdog5 Ps: I'm not German but I love almost all of the German osu players
It's not just a game, to say that is to diminish all of the time and effort they've put in. It not being just a game is exactly why you don't mock and bully people like that.
@@nm3004 But then again, the flipside of that is it justifies the toxic mindset some people have of tying one's value as a human to how successful (or how unsuccesful) they are in competititons, as if playing bad in a match is a great sin commited against humanity (Look up the Bill Buckner choking in the World Series as an example). It's not really about diminishing the passion and the work, but more so how that is not an excuse.
i hope this serves as a reminder that not every person is as emotionally strong as the next. Comments and things that we say to each other hold a meaning to the person receiving them in a way we can never really know for certain. My choice will be to always play the role of good sportsmanship because we all should be here to raise each other up to the challenge, not take one another down..
I always wondered what happened to Alien after watching owc2018 despite having a good performance (SS on Indifferences and Yellow Splash for example), it's sad to see this kind of behaviour on the osu! community and owc but i hope he's doing great in life now
I feel like the osu community maybe changed their doings, but not the toxicity. It still feels super toxic. I wish we would all learn to be better people and not harass others over nothing. Extremely sorry for alien that they had to go through that.
I'm so glad we're mostly past that sort of thing now, some may call it the golden ages back then but I really can't stand how people were harrassed or witch hunted for no reason
These people hating on a Top Player is never even feel how it feels like once you are a top player. There is this insane expectation comes from these people though thet can just fc map in few tries in tournament but little people realise how much times to get that level even for top player, hell you can even see top player can still struggle play some 4 star maps due to vast variety type of maps wheter it's tech or irregular stream maps.
I feel like the reason we see a lot of toxicity in osu is because it is a game where many players from around the world interact with each other. A lot of people just don't understand what a lot of limits are, as some regions are a bit more lax on shit talking and all that versus others, also simple language barriers can make things seem harsher than they actually meant. Also, since ranks are public and a lot of people focus on rank cause them to set stupidly high and unreasonable expectations for high ranked players, and when the players dont perform to a random's expectations they are shit on for it.
Genuinely so messed up, I really hope that they ended up finding a game/community that was more respectful of their talent. That's the worst side of every competitive game tbh, not only of osu.
