Am Croatian (yes the other underdog winner nation) and was the fan of Dutch national football football team since 1974 (lol long time yea). Their 70s team was probably the best team ever that never won the world cup .
Back in 78 they didn’t show the games in Canada but they showed the highlights. I still remember those two perfect shots to beat Zoff and have always stuck with me.
Italy in 1978 was a great team. But they finished the tournament exhausted. Furthermore Bearzot never change his players, Antognoni apart. And, badluck, all their opponents were great teams : my France, Hungary, Argentina at home, Germany the holders, Austria, Netherlands and Brazil. Impossible to make harder.
Haan and Van Hanagem were a terrific midfield duo. Haan scored similar goal against Germany as well. This ranks with Roberto Carlos free kick as the ball swung away from Zoff.
Van Hanegem wasn't playing in 1978. In the Word cup 974 Haan en Van Hangem played together but then Haan (originally a midfielder) was positioned in the defense by Rinus Michels.
I remember this like it was yesterday! Our tv had broke and i was watching this on a black and white tv that had a screen about the size of a mobile phone! But what a world cup this was,fantastic stuff.

I am a Holland fan but I have to admit apart from two wonderful goals , overall Italy played better than Holland and in the game against Brazil they hit the post twice (for sure), maybe 3 times; so they were kind of unlucky against Brazil.

After Brandts scored the energy drained away from Italy and they couldn't handle Johan Neeskens when he moved up into midfield after playing in defence in the first half marking Rossi.
Italy started to go backwards in the second round as they physically ran out of steam. They were very fortunate to beat Austria in the game before this.

The two Dutch goals are indisputable, there is no influence from the referee. Italy did not deserve to be in the final. Its first phase was splendid, but the second was disastrous. A single victory against Austria and somewhat unfair. In contrast, the Netherlands played poorly in the first phase, but the second was brilliant and deserved to be in the final and even win it.

C'è l'incredibile gol di Roberto Carlos su punizione in Francia Brasile amichevole del 1997, ma non era da quella distanza. Credo che Zoff se lo ricordi ancora bene...ma quattro anni dopo ci siamo rifatti vincendo i Mondiali che resteranno nella storia.
Italy was probably the strongest team of the tournament (even stronger than the team that won the cup in 1982 and sole to defeat Argentina) but failed because of a weak semifinal 2nd half. The crucial decision was the replacement of Causio by Sala, difficult to understand given Causio created hell lot of problems to dutch defense and went to the pause in good condition.
@ANC Nutrition it's not a matter of being a "great player" but about role and having the ball roll in the right place. Players like Conti in Italy 82 or Pirlo in Italy 2006. Causio was the playmaker in Italy 78 and Sala could not replace that role. This is possibly Bearzot biggest mistake.

There was a very unfair foul on Italian Keeper after a corner. The Dutch Defender elbowed the Head/Ear of Italian Keeper Zoff who kicked the ball out of the field to recover. The ball was not returned to Italy by Netherland. And on that throw-in the orange team builds the goal that will start the Dutch comeback. Misbehaviour on the part of the Dutch and the referee who allowed it! @
Giving the ball back to the team, which put it out of play due to an injury, only became a thing in the 90's. So, given the spirit of the time, your comment is unfair and manipulative.

All under the disguise of the Spanish Referee who allowed the complete game to the Dutch Team lots of very violent entries and this situation was only the crowning touch.

Without Gentile taking Diego out of that game, Italy wouldn't have won it, then it would have been a very different game against Brazil. Dino Zoff has largely been held responsable for that last goal and Italy's defeat!! however in slow motion It can be appreciated that the ball took a curve as approaching and introduced rirth beside the left post and two italians were kind of obstructing his sigth!! but his mistake was only his location! He should have stood more to his left and probably had reach the ball to deflect it.

Remember watching this on TV in 78, Haan's goal was awesome, so was the other one he scored (Vs Germany was it ?) - probably the only thing i rememver from that World Cup, apart from the final, Scotland's defeat against Peru and Gemmill's goal aganst Holland. Really wanted them to beat Argentina in the final but it wasnt to be.
Spare a thought for Dino Zoff. Two spectacular long-range shots beat him in this game, and in the next game against Brazil for third place play-off, Nelinho and Dirceu beat him again with two great long-range goals.
I was 15 years old ,,, my opinion at the time was that Italy was the best ,, missile shooting towards the goal from a very long distance, and the weakness of the Italian goalkeeper was the main reason for that loss⚽️🇮🇶🇳🇱🇮🇹⚽️.

@@chelsblue7370 To be fair in this situation are 3 injustices at once: Not any foul brought Italian keeper to kick ball out but intentional Foul on Zoff by Dutch Defender (nowadays such a foul is a red card/then it was yellow) and consciously keeping the ball without any sense of remorse or justice. All under the disguise of the Spanish Referee who allowed the complete game to the Dutch Team lots of very violent entries and this situation was only the crowning touch.

@@chelsblue7370 A part from the fact that Rossi played disastrously against Argentina (he started being decisive against Brazil) and that Scirea, Cabrini, Tardelli, Antognoni and Conti set the decisive course for Italy it seems obvious to me that you are confusing hard play with injustice. Gentile never elbowed any of his opponents, most of his opponents did not touch the ball but didn´t risk injuries and ended most of the time the game if the coach did not substitute them cause he played hard but not maliciously and THAT is the difference - mentioning in this relation South Korea is completely out of place because grotesque such as saying that Gentile were decisive for WC82 and not Paolo Rossi who by scoring six goals won the Golden Boot as top goalscorer and the Golden Ball for the player of the tournament and who is one of only three players to have won all three awards at a World Cup (with Garrincha 1962 and Mario Kempes 1978). Rossi was also awarded the 1982 Ballon d'Or as the European Footballer of the Year for his performances. Come on!
@@EVOZORE I explained why a seemingly far-fetched statement actually makes sense but I probably need to repeat it. Without Gentile taking Diego out of that game, Italy wouldn't have won it, then it would have been a very different game against Brazil. Don't get me wrong, I was in favour of Italy at the time even against Brazil, just because everyone I knew rooted for the Selecao, I went the other way.

Dino Zoff has largely been held responsable for that last goal and Italy's defeat!! however in slow motion It can be appreciated that the ball took a curve as approaching and introduced rirth beside the left post and two italians were kind of obstructing his sigth!! but his mistake was only his location! He should have stood more to his left and probably had reach the ball to deflect it.

Remember watching this on TV in 78, Haan's goal was awesome, so was the other one he scored (Vs Germany was it ?) - probably the only thing i rememver from that World Cup, apart from the final, Scotland's defeat against Peru and Gemmill's goal aganst Holland. Really wanted them to beat Argentina in the final but it wasnt to be.
Spare a thought for Dino Zoff. Two spectacular long-range shots beat him in this game, and in the next game against Brazil for third place play-off, Nelinho and Dirceu beat him again with two great long-range goals.
