Also as a high recommend but not strictly necessary: classes can't be picked, so avoid any specialization details, or mentions on preferred weaponry. Also, unlike X2, in EW, XCOM is a military organization, so recruits would tend to have militaristic backgrounds. Keep that in mind. It's not until 20yrs later in X2 where we're literally recruiting any clown that can hold a gun. For EW, aim to make your soldier's backstory leaning more towards that aspect. Could be an ex-cop, retired veteran back to it, etc. Keep it creative, I won't be too hard on ya if you miss the mark, but please try!

      Luke "Oni" Faust
Brown hair, Pale as hell Caucasian, Red armor.
Small towns are boring, so they spent most time online, in corners of the internet that are morally grey. Seeing the leaked info of the invasion because of it. Due to how easily they found this info, Xcom was quick to convince them into joining.

      Name: Henry “Blackbird” Wilson
Description: Dark hair, clean shaven, darker olive skin (indigenous American), armor is tan/dark red
Before the invasion Henry was a sheriff deputy in the Santa Clara Pueblo reservation. His experience as a US Marine gave him a fast track to the Regional Sheriff SWAT Response Unit.
Henry fought the invasion with his SWAT unit for weeks before hearing of XCOM. He left with a couple of friends to track down a way to get recruited. He found a squad engaged with enemy units. His assistance, and the loss of his traveling companions in the battle, led to the XCOM squad taking Henry with them at extraction. He was soon a member.

Visual description: Short middle part brow/light-tan/Orange and Purple
Coach was a volleyball coach before the invasion representing the sport at a national level. Running training camps and S & C was his passion. Motivating athletes to become the best athletes and people they could be.
Coach was recruited by Xcom because he was good at managing people and leading, having connections through sport and understanding how people were motivated came easy to him. When earth was invaded he choose to take up arms and fight! Leading those around him in a small militia group protecting their city. Eventually Xcom took notice of Coach’s raw ability to lead and manage. Bringing him into their ranks...

Personal Log - Lex Samreeth, Logistics
Tactics win battles. Logistics wins wars. And I aim to help Commander Odd win this war. Some folks may call me a glorified office worker, but it's my job to ensure that the medbays are fully stocked, that the armory always has enough ammunition, our interceptors have the fuel and munitions they need - I even make sure the janitors have the appropriate cleaners for dealing with bloodstains.
We lost half of our first contact squad. But considering we were going in with next to no intel, that might be acceptable losses. I made sure all of the corpses were put on ice for Vahlen to dig her fingers into later. Looked just like the Greys, though they don't have mouths. Wonder how they eat. We also obtained a sample of the "meld" nanotechnology. Both Vahlen and Shen are practically salivating over the possible applications of this stuff. There's a transhumanist's dream in that glowing orange canister. I just wonder how long it will take before it becomes a nightmare.
Engineering and expansion has started slowly, due to low funds. Our new spy satellite should help improve with that. Marvelous device. The "elerium" that fuels most alien technology has a distinctive energy signature, with these satellites can easily detect.

What a pleasant surprise on my home page, Commander!
    Angelo "Fireman" Alcala
Black hair, tan skin, red armor, face covered by helmet (think its helmet 40 in the options?)
After his service in the Marine Corps, volunteering at his local fire department gave Angelo a new direction for his life; one where he could help people without harming others. But not all fires can be put out- at least, not by one man. As he helplessly watched plasma burn down his hometown, he knew that the aliens weren't something he could fight as a fireman.
Thanks to a few old connections in the military, he found a new way to fight fire with fire: XCOM. It only took half a heartbeat for him to decide to recruit. Let's just hope his aim hasn't gotten too rusty.

As excited as I am for this playthrough, I wish you would have given EW Long War a try. The dynamic war setting is easily scalable so it really doesn't have to be all that much longer than a typical EW I/I campaign, and I think you would really enjoy the additional tactical depth, like mechs possessing many more abilities and having their own suite of classes, being able to deploy entire squadrons of fighters to shoot down alien UFOs, and the difficulty curve being such that the early tactical game (minus air game) is much less of a crap shoot.
Maybe if your squad wipes on the first abduction mission you can pivot to LW ^^

Woo! was looking forward to this campaign, was also catching up on the 8 year old campaign to get a feel for this game since i started in the xcom 2 seasons
    Name: Micky “Frosty” Caldwell
Visual description: Teal hair pinned in a bun, Light tanned skin, dark blue armor [race 1, skin 3, hair 5, hair color 18, armor tint 12]
Before the invasion of earth, 22 year old Micky worked as a computer technician at a military academy while studying engineering. Most of her days were spent fixing printers, “fixing” jammed vending machines, reading technical manuals, and training for strongman competitions.
When the invasion kicked off, she picked up a gun and defended her workplace from alien destruction, sniping just like she learned back in her ROTC days. Later on, her group was picked up by X-COM, being recruited as extra hands since their defense efforts at the academy were rather successful.
While Micky wasn’t qualified to work in the workshop, her commitment to Earth’s defense was more then enough to have her pick up a gun again, this time as a soldier.

Physical Description: Short brown hair, mutton chops with mustache beard, aviators, green heavy armor
Before the war Redmond was a member of a United States Mortar Crew and Heavy Artillery unit. He’d always had a passion for making things go boom, even back as a kid in Georgia. He’d gotten the nickname Thumper for having had a habit doing pranks around town with fireworks, firecrackers, and cherry bombs. He served with the United States Marine Corps until the Invasion of 2015 happened, during which time he was sent to be used by XCOM in their fight. Maybe his love of explosions of all kinds will see him through this fight? Or maybe it’ll just end up with a fitting end to a man named Thumper.

What i like about this game is how iconic it is. Yes, Xcom 2 and indeed other later titles are more evolved and have fine tuned and added mechanics. But this one is where it all started, the revival and modernization of the genre. It's just beautiful to see again, man this gamedesign is sleek and the atmosphere awesome. In my book this was ahead of its time. Still remember the massive backlash about missing TUs and a regression in complexity. Well look who's laughing now ;) AWESOME Chris!

Background: In his teens Felix enlisted into the army for two reasons: money and a purpose. Felix "earned" his nickname when he was blown off course during a routine operation. His squadmates found him stuck in a tree and had to cut himself down with his knife after the chute malfunctioned. Much to his chagrin he never lived it down. Although he found the money, he’s still looking for that purpose.

Leaving him with burn marks on his face and a broken arm.
A few days after the attack, xcom started recruiting in his local area, and with him having the mindset that xcom would quickly help him recover ans then let him leave when he wanted to, he decided to join.

    Name: Alex “Professor” Burkemper
Visual description: short brown hair, glasses, forward ball cap w/ earphones, goatee, light brown skin, red/purple armor
Who were you before the invasion?
Alex always wanted to be an astronaut. He joined the air force right after high school with dreams of becoming a fighter pilot just like his hero Neil Armstrong, but his poor eyesight meant he would never get to fly. Alex was instead assigned to the ground crew. When not on duty, Alex could often be seen around the base with his nose buried in a book, smoking his pipe. If he couldn’t become a pilot, maybe he could get accepted to an astrophysics program when he went to college after his service.
    Why did XCOM recruit you?
When the invasion began, the abductions and terror attacks were not widely known. XCOM came to the base to recruit, but only told the men it was that for a unit specializing in space. Alex jumped at the opportunity and volunteered, despite knowing nothing of the risks. He may have gotten more than he bargained for…

    Name: Reuben "Roulette" Betts
Visual description: Dark brown/black shortcut hair, light brown skin, orange armor color
Who was he before the invasion? - Reuben was a roulette table attendant in Atlantic City who would sometimes fix games to help desperate people who came to his table. He liked to think himself a new age Robin Hood, although the house kept winning in the end, and he kept his job.
Why did XCOM recruit him? - Every night since the invasion began, Reuben enters the downtown bar, takes the center table, and places three things down: his wallet, his phone, and his revolver. After every drink, he spins the revolver, looks down at his phone, and waits to see if he'll buy another round. The bartender never tries to stop him because he knows three things. There's no money in his wallet, there's no bullet in the gun, and there's no call coming. Instead, he calls XCOM to "offer" Reuben's services, mainly to settle his tab, but Reuben might come to appreciate an opportunity to help people for good.

Visual description: Long light blond hair (any up-do is fine); Light Skin tone; Teal or Cyan Armor (Any blue choice is fine)
Who were you before the invasion?: Prior to the invasion, Rosalynd was your average American first responder. Helping people made her happy and she knew that serving others was her true calling. Post-invasion, the need for first responders was exponential and she spent every waking hour helping civilians escape danger. This is how she came into the sights of XCOM.
Why did XCOM recruit you?: Early in the war, alien weaponry proved far deadlier than anticipated. XCOM recruited Rosalind out of dire need for field medics. She joined because she knew she would more lives by fighting than by herding civies. Roz is well-known for her mindfulness and checking in with her squadmates during downtime. This is how she became known as "XCOM's Den Mother," shortened to "Mother" when deployed in the field.

I dunno if I'll be doing a character submission, but might do a log for one of the other staff members. I did this some time back on an old campaign... why not? I miss XCOM: EW. Maybe this is a good way to enjoy and have fun once more.
There's always the tried-and-true statement... full cover is half cover, and half cover is no cover. It feels like a tradition that somebody dies on the first mission. It's just how it goes.
From my old experience, I actually still picked Engineers as my first reward. At some point, I think I did a dual-rush of both Satellites and Lasers, but that experience was on Classic. It'd probably work for Impossible, though. It gets dependent on your research options more than scientists, but I definitely pick them up shortly after.
With how modded campaigns can go, I understand the Honestman/Bronzeman option. Don't want to have messed-up save files and lose all progress, right?
    Anyways...
Logistics Tactical Officer "Ruby" Log 01. Date: March 01, 2015
So, it's finally started. Been wondering when we'd finally get called upon. We've been called down to South America - Brazil. For obvious reasons, I'm not going to write the specific location. But what I can do is write about who I am. I'm not fond of using my real name. If there's one thing I've learned, it's to value discretion. So, if you happen upon this, know me as "Ruby". It's an old nickname from my time in the military long ago. It's stuck. Learned a lot about tactics and the like from the numerous military operations that have happened in the past. Done my digging into history. I have access to the mission logs and keep track of what's going on around the base.I also keep tabs on the new recruits and soldiers who come in, although I don't get involved in that too often. I'm not a social person.
Speaking of soldiers, let's address that elephant in the room. We've officially had first contact - a Brazilian construction site. Would make sense, a high point to survey and figure out where we are. But... it's also the first time I've seen footage of these aliens in actual combat. Based on my initial observations, these must be some sort of small-caliber weapon these aliens wield. Unusual mechanism, however. And highly lethal... granted, our weapons were just as deadly. Although these guys seem a little resilient to shrapnel. Regardless, a burst of plasma or lead would kill anyone. This led to two deaths today. Not ideal. Wish there was more to be done for them, but at the same time, this is first contact. It's hard to say I'm surprised that we already have casualties. We're stepping into war... one that I'm on the lines of. Maybe not directly, but I'm still playing a part in it.
Maybe keeping this set of journal logs will help clear my mind. And a long sleep. That ought to help as well. I'll leave things here for when new major developments happen.
Writing "Ruby out" seems too... militaristic. Maybe I shouldn't do that. I'll figure out a way to end these properly. Today's not that day, though. I might try and keep this more casual.

Hey there, glad to see you joining in. I've picked up your log. I almost missed it, and would have if it weren't for someone in the Discord who pointed it out. I don't expand every comment and didn't notice that you had logged after your initial few sentences.

Ah, yeah, when I did this multiple playthroughs back, I'd include all my normal thoughts on the game before the logs.
It's been awhile since I've done this. It probably isn't that obvious at first glance... that initial, non-related log stuff will likely be shorter in the future!

Note for those writing logs for characters - it has been a good couple of years since Odd's last XCOM series. This platform has constantly changing automoderation policies and may erroneously hide comments based on things like keywords or even fairly mild slurs. You should save and backup your logs on a text editor of your choice. I have recently commented with a separate link to the Google doc - if you haven't seen your log get picked up, check to see if its been hidden by signing out to see if its still visible or viewing the comments section using another account.

Gonna be fun, seeing the various different logs of different soldiers yet again. Interested to see how they compare to previous playthroughs (Current favorites are season 4 X-com 2 vanilla, and season 6 X-com 2 WotC), especially with the likely more militaristic/normal backgrounds.

@@spiritsoldier4475 It may be a lot quieter this season as until all the soldiers on the roster are replaced by viewer submissions, we can't really write or roleplay our characters interacting with each other outside of combat. One sneaky EW/EU-only yhint to start writing for a combatant character right away - come up with an Interceptor pilot!

    Head: 4
    Skin Color: 2
    Hair / Helmet: 6
    Hair Color: 14

Maria grew up in a rural Mexican farming community, but enlisted in the army to find her true self, but was disappointed to find apathy and corruption instead of pride defending Mexican democracy. Despite serving with distinction, she sought another venue to defend her country’s freedom, choosing to transfer to an elite international military service defending Earth from... aliens?
Expecting XCOM to be a joke, Maria was amazed to learn that not only was XCOM real, but that her service record made the cut. At first, it was a dream come true, as Maria's love of gardening found her love in a fellow soldier, and she married into a new family, one that has been part of XCOM since the days of Asaru and the Bureau of Strategic Emergency Command. Now, she and her husband fight to save Earth... hopefully, their children won’t become resistance fighters against an alien occupation!

    Hair/Helmet: 3
    Hair Color: 3
    Armor Deco: 1
    Armor Tint: 3
Who were you before the invasion / Why did XCOM recruit you:
Cassie joined a local militia at a young age to protect her family and home from external threats. Through her training she developed a strong bond with her squadmate. Callsign 'Ronin' worked alongside Cassie in countless missions, and the two of them proved to be an effective backbone in fireteams. While undertaking a solo reconnaissance assignment to gather intel on the new alien threat, they attacked first. Walker's militia outpost was raided by a group of aliens who seemingly left no survivors. They razed the outpost to the ground, but did they take any prisoners, like Walker's squadmate?
Looking for revenge and answers, Walker dons the callsign 'Ronin'. She actively sought out organizations to join to strike back against the aliens who killed her comrades, and XCOM was all too eager for a new recruit who has familiarity with combat experience and a paramilitary background.

Visual description: a black man a little over 30 that styles himself with a goatee. His hair is closely shaved. He has a preference for jungle green in his armor. Speaks English, French, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.
Who was He: Umar was originally a street rat in Lagos, begging to survive. Begging turned to thieving, then thieving turned to violence. This eventually got him recruited by a notable gang in Lagos' outskirts as an enforcer. Later on, a plea deal with the police lead to him betraying his gang for a reduced sentence. This soon turned into a career in the Nigerian Navy, his skills and actions having caught the attention of Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman, and became a founding member of the Special Boat service in 2006.
Why XCOM recruited Him: Nine years of successful operations later, Udoka is clearly a skilled soldier and even occasional covert operative despite his attitude. That same attitude and checkered past prior to recruitment from prison has prevented him from becoming any sort of Commanding Officer or achieving any advancement to out of the field. XCOM was the best place for Croc to go: a genuine gift from Nigeria and a way to remove a figure that was becoming troubling to keep around.

A man with little words and little story at least none that his lips spill, records say that Conrad is a special operative from a German militia and that he's already seen combat against the Aliens, being the sole survivor who makes his intent of revenge clear, his callsign "Excom" supposedly stands for Extra-Xcom member.
In truth it is short for excommunicated as in reality Conrad is a fugitive in hiding using fabricated records from the real militia that was wiped out by him and his former comrades, the ones who will become known as Exalt and it is them he seeks revenge against, having realized that their goals are misguided after the assault upon fellow humans and the arrival of the aliens that was long predicted to happen, however Conrad will never willingly reveal this knowledge out of shame.

    Julius "Wano" Reborn
    (Country - Ukraine, if possible)
Brown hair, light skin, armor - black and red cammo.
"Wano" was rather unusual individual - all his life he was trying his best to overachieve everything. He believed that hard work can get you anywhere. As time passed in his full-time job he came to realise one simple truth - the world around him was a lie.
Those were his exact words when XCOM found him amongst the first wave survivors, with dead alien body behind him. XCOM operatives have confirmed that "Wano" was subjected to some sort of mental manipulation, yet managed to fight and somehow kill the enemy. Such unusual incident intrigued XCOM, he was later scouted into the squad, and placed under cautious observation.

Very Little is known about the mercenary known only as Steel Venom, except for one thing. When the invasion first commenced, he started a gang known as 'Earth's Hitmen' to combat the invaders on their own terms after the government turned a blind eye. Their most famous mission came when they were commisoned to resuce a group of hostages set to be executed by a pro-alien cult. According to reports, by the time all of the hostages were rescued, none of the cultists survived. This was later noticed by XCOM who was initialy hesitant to recruit him for what he did, but was later convinced after proving his worth to the higher-ups. Now, he joins the fight against the aliens with hopes that his skills will be put to good use.
