*XCOM Recording* *Log 1, Series 2* *XCOM Operative Ethan White, Callsign “Ace”* So, Jane got her special little Chimera Squad SWAT team task force thing. Good for her. If this was happening four years ago, I’d probably hate her guts for even proposing to have a unit with both aliens and humans, but now… well I guess it had to happen eventually, right? I’m not much of an alien lover myself, but I can’t argue with the combat effectiveness of some of them anyways. It’s probably nice to have a muton watching your back, that is assuming said muton doesn’t go berserk and accidentally punch your head off. Oh well, I guess I’ll see if a friend of mine will let me in on some of the details of what’s happening with Chimera Squad. They’re probably seeing far more action than we are, so it might be interesting to learn about how things are going over in city 31. Bradford and the Commander are still obsessed with the potential return of the elders. Maybe I should be too, but to be honest I’d rather enjoy the calm while it lasts. It’s boring as hell, sure, but I bet that eventually I’m going to look back at these days and say “hey, I should have enjoyed those days while they lasted, because now I’m getting shot at by more weird aliens”. Apparently their first mission didn’t go so well though. From what I heard some insurgents took the mayor of the city hostage. Chimera squad then rescued the mayor, but only to discover that a plasma IED blew up her and her transport. I personally never liked politicians, but I heard Mayor Nightingale was pretty good at her job, so may she rest in peace. Their second mission went decently though. Sent in fireteam to apparently stop some religious hybrids from stealing illegal MEC parts. I always hated those stupid ADVENT MECs, so I’m glad they stopped some former ADVENT nut jobs from getting their hands on parts for them. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know why they’d want parts for MECs. I will say though that they definitely take a more unique method of taking down the enemy. Usually we just go in and blast every bad guy we see, but it seems Chimera Squad actually tries to take some prisoners. Back in my day if we wanted intel from an enemy trooper, we just stabbed them in the face with a skulljack. Regardless, I’m sure Chimera Squad has a bright future ahead of them. I’ll be making more of these logs every time I get an update on the situation over in city 31. I created a new series of logs since series 1 is too full now. I wonder if anyone else actually still does these. Ace out. *End Log*
Its rather interesting to see several exterrestrials are rather integrated to humane societhy tbh - it appears as the humans are rather well adapted to some variants of aliens existence
I haven't watched the video, but I'm betting that this is a leftover effect from the 20 years of Advent rule and propaganda in their cities built after the war. The civilians in those cities definitely did seem pacified and content compared to the human settlers/exiles outside.
@@time2go465 True ish, but there was also the broken trust at the end of XCOM 2, however it seems that the civilians of city 31 in general see it as it being the Elders who were manipulating and enslaving everyone, so the members of the other races were just as much victims as humans were.
I think it’s so cool that it’s on a much smaller scale then the other two mainline xcom games, like you just have a handful of operators and it’s just one city as apposed to a whole as resistance or global organisation and saving the world
Yeah, the small scale is a really cool feel, I wish we had random operators, though. Still, the game looks cool and I can't wait to be able to play it at midnight.
This game gives me a serious XCOM: APOCOLYPSE vibe. It's obviously not exactly the same, but I can't help thinking Firaxis looked pretty hard at that game before making this one.
And it's also sensibly priced at like £16, so it's not even tyring to say "yes, I'm a full game with all new assets and thus deserve the £40 price tag" that some Triple A companies would call a game like this.
I'm loving the tiny bit of lore I've seen in this video! Showing that xcom is expanding its influence, that not everyone in xcom is comfortable working with aliens, and showing that xcom hasn't just turned into some kind of government entity, but that they're still focused on the elders. The difficulty of these missions looks pretty decent too, so it looks fun.
XCOM was so grim and dark. The deaths felt real and everyone knew their work was as serious as it could be. It's fuckin weird to see the characters of XCOM goof around and fire off one-liners from a 90's teen movie.
Just remember this particular viper is 20 human years old and in their quote recording is *likely* telling whisper the coms person to record their middle fingurs gesture
But they have no semblance of inherent difference left and that bothers me. It's like you took your run of the mill hollywood sidekick and slapped an alien skin on it instead of making it feel like yknow... An alien
@@andrewdowell2663 Look at Cherub and Torque they were both "born" on Earth. It's 5 years since Xcom 2 which is 20 years from Xcom 1 which is a total of 25 years.
First impressions. Artwork: Pretty god-awful for the aliens. Hardly recognizable as what they represent. Voices: A huge step down in talent from previous releases. Aliens given entirely human voices, with entirely human attitude and accents. Gameplay: Interesting. Very interesting. Captures the feel of the franchise well, which it very important. Novel features and goals make it a title that will stand on it's own, instead of being a rehash. Overview: I quite like what I see as a game. I do wish the squad and dialogue were more... Professional. I can only describe the feel of the dialogue as a Young Adult version of X-Com2. Hopefully X-Com3 will be a little more light on cheese, with a slightly more adult feel. What I mean by adult is just that. Quips where appropriate, but professionals are generally a bit more somber when their business is taking lives and avoiding their own death. That's just my own opinion, and I'm looking forward to playing, and of course watching Mr. Odd.
@@robertagren9360 That depends on how invested in them you were. I remember when I was a kid playing the original X-Com and the misery of my team of psychic badasses being blown to smithereens by a lucky blaster bomb when assaulting a crashed alien battleship.
"Young Adult version of XCOM-2" is actually pretty apt, yet that's why this game appeals to me. I like the tone. I'm going to be buying it shortly. I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as XCOM2, 1, or the original games, but just like you, I'm looking forward to playing.
Robert Ågren 2K are though, wouldn't be hard to get some good writers and voice actors used in other games. Dialogue was so jarring and cringe to me. Also the plot smells of SJW. I wish they would just avoid getting forcefully ideological.
I get the change in tone isn't everyone's cup of tea but it's a spin-off and you're playing as a SWAT team not as an outmatched secret commando unit desperately trying to save the world. XCOM can't just do the same thing over and over again so it's nice to see them experiment with budget titles like this.
I noticed when I played the tutorial, in the museum there were a lot of things from XCOM 2, like the Psionic General, And the Assassin’s armor and weapons, even a bust of Bradford!
Firaxis made their money back sponsoring your video, reason being that because of your video I am buying the game now. I usually wait for 50% plus specials but I am buying now, due to this video making me so hungry for it. Loving the explanations, it is very informative so one can play one's first play through with more success. Love your videos
A lovely spin on the traditional Xcom experience, grate to see former advent units are playable too, though im pretty sure all Vipers are female thanks to valin introducing the Viper king, torque's voice is at the very least very feminine Belay that commander It seems my P.I.D. (personal information device) didn't update with your self correction.
So I'm just gonna call it now: the story is going to go - Work your way through each enemy organization only to discover they are NOT responsible for the Mayor's death. After all 3 are destroyed a new Organization pops up, one that is made up of Former XCOM/Resistance soldiers who want to just kill all aliens and take Earth back for Humans. Thus the 4th arc will be fighting these new guys and then we get the finale where we have to fight their leader guarded by Ex-XCOM soldiers.
I would kill all aliens, earth is not their home... Seems a weird plot development to me, as if the plot took a dramatic and insensible direction. Imo.
@@damachinen I agree. At the end of X-Com 2, it was revealed that the aliens were committing human experimentation on an industrial scale and all but gearing up to genocide the rest of humanity that didn't have the psychic gene. You don't just get over something like that in five years. The last time something like that happened was seventy years ago and there are people discussing it today. I don't really buy the plot of this game, it seems so bizarre for an X-Com game. If it turned out to be some kind of mental shenanigans by the Ethereals, it would make a lot more sense.
@@Sujad I thought it WAS all the Ethereals' gameplan, with the various alien races serving them either subjugated mentally or by force (except the Thinmen/Sneks).
@@omarwallace5835 And it kinda shows how tensions for Humans, Aliens and the Hybrids are quite high, just because the War was won and the Elders were driven off, doesn't mean everyone is all joining hand in hand, singing Kumbaya.
Hell yeah! I was really unsure about an XCOM styled this way, but it looks and just looks like it plays amazingly! Maybe I can finally get into some XCOM after all these years of lurking!
Been in and out of your channel, watching your videos throughout high school and now, during university, I decided to come back and see what you were doing. Damn was I happy to still see some XCOM videos. I am so glad you are still doing this. Thank you, your videos have been, and still are, an amazing watch. Keep up the great work and I'm about to click on the next video haha.
I'm absolutely psyched about The Progeny. After Xcom:EU and Xcom: WoTC, I'm looking forward to seeing if these people are the Templars, or more. Seems that at the end of each game, it's always the Psions who get the last word in, the last important choice, and I'm kinda curious on if this rings true for Xcom: Chimera Squad. Maybe The Progeny aren't radicals, but it can't be ruled out yet.
I'm so pumped! A new XCOM game, with a ChristopherOdd playthrough? Honey, I'm home!! P.S.- Your explanations, as always, make perfect sense. You do a fantastic job of getting all of us up to speed on the first few episodes; that way we can all just enjoy you crushing the later stages!

I loved your previous XCOM 2 playthroughs and can't wait to watch further episodes of this series. Keep them coming Commander!
"Ironman mode" doesn't seem to have much point in a game where you can't lose characters and must replay a mission if a character dies. For this game it should be renamed "screw your campaign when you encounter the inevitable early release showstopper bug" mode.
Basicly in xcom you will load save everytime one of your soldier die. With ironman, you cannot. In this game it will force you to restart mission. I don't see a reason to use saves. Like dude, i don't like how i killed them so i will load?
I assume this is more for the strategic parts of the game - namely, the city map. Without backups your forced to accept when you cock that shit up. It's not really necessary but eh. I can see people playing it
Here it is! And a day early too. I’m glad to see you being open to a character based storyline with this XCOM game. Been reading a lot of hate, some of which is absolutely absurd. Not surprising mind you, but it’s still ridiculous. Anyway, I’m all for this too, and know this is just a side story they wanted to tell. Let’s get this XCOM train rolling baby! Commander Odd, we’re ready for your orders.
Odd, not sure if you made this same conclusion, but based on the post-mission archive I think Director Kelly is the same Jane Kelly from XCOM 2. She was the one in the black cap in the opening cinematic that stuck the charge to the vehicle and was in the tutorial missions. She seemed canon enough, so I added her to my roster. Apparently she also later formed a bond with Torque, according to squad bio, which sounds like a nice reference to WOTC content. Nice to see she's still in this.
I LOVE the chatter between the squadmates. It...I don't know how they did it but it doesnt feel FORCED almost. Obviously its not the natrual flow you would get in a situation like this but it feels pretty damn close.
*-City 31 Public News Broadcast Excerpt-* Mayor Nightingale was tragically killed by a plasma bomb, just moments after being taken hostage by an armed human militia, it's identified members having no prior history of military training. From my time working under ADVENT, I can confirm that these civilians were more heavily armed than most of the Resistance Cells they were fighting. XCOM was one of the few that had access to plasma weapons. They also sent Chimera Squad to help 31PD deal with "these radicals." Radicals who were inspired by their actions. City Council is questioning if Chimera Squad should be removed as quickly as they have arrived here. There are already conspiracy theories believing that Chimera Squad aided the assassination. But with 31PD's resources already being limited, can we really afford to send away the help based on suspicion alone? *-End Transmission-*
Interesting unless I’m mistaken that War Of The Choosen skirmisher or Templar classes were not on display as chimera squad operatives. I was half expecting a Templar man or women to be one of the gang at the very least.
zephyr is basically a templar. she has a punch thats basically the same as the templar gloves, that triggers momentum, and also gets parry when you later her
Loving the change of gameplay and aesthetics to this game, really happy you're stoked about it and agree the Chimera squad members having very distinct personalities makes up for the lack of customization.
Good morning Commander Odd. Man I missed watching your XCOM videos. Already bought the game and 2/3rds into my first story playthrough, so now I don't mind watching your videos because in my case, it's spoiler free. Gonna be awesome to watch this series again! Thanks!
Ah, Odd, you never fail to deliver content - yet another playthrough of yours I'll be following. Very interesting stuff! I'm really hoping we get more insight into the events that took place between XCOM 2 and this.
I got it after seeing your gameplay video and jumped in today--oh, my goodness. Put aside the incredible and punchy gameplay--the story is SO good. I *love* the hopeful worldbuilding in the midst of hardship that is being told. I *love* the characters--I was really worried, how will they make that transition? For this game, I don't miss having my own soldiers at all. I am attached to the ones I've met so far. I guess, what is making me smile evry second I am playing is that it all *feels* like XCOM, while also feeling like so much more? I guess hope in the face of terror and the unknown is a staple of XCOM, and this synthy, sometimes campy, heartfelt feeling growing across XCOM 2 to now is just so good. I can't wait to play more, and to go from playing to watching your videos! Aaack!
@@zigzigzig That's kinda the point. The destruction of the overseers was a while ago by this games timeline, and the remnants of the aliens have integrated with that of earth. There's no mystery, because they're not mysterious. Its no long a hivemind trying to destroy the world. They're just people, like you and me.
In addition to the topic, despite the several previous commentators have said their own concern about the art style and potential change of the graphics, so far, the series have put good and entertainign visuals, Its definetly worhtwhile to see 👍
I'm short for money ATM, but as soon as I heard your positivity towards the game I preordered it. Only review I need, been watching since your first game of XCOM 2. Love your channel, keep it up.
I've played XCOM several times, and I can honestly say... Jane Kelly has always survived every time. So I was very happy to see she made Director. Nice Easter Egg. :)
Firstly I just want to say thank you to Mr. Odd. I'm a long time subscriber and XCom player but I've only been able to play XCom on console because I'm a pleb. I beat XCom 2 WOTC on classic ironman on PS4 just reloading cloud saves because of the crashing. I won't get to play Chimera because it's PC but if I have to settle for watching someone else play it I'm glad it's you. Now talking about the game one thing I don't think Firaxis gets enough credit for is the sheer amount of empathy they force you to experience while playing a strategy game. In XCom 2 we were the scrappy guerilla insurgents fighting the man and now we *are* the man. It feels eerie and almost traumatic to me to imagine XCom being the one kicking down doors and interrogating people even if you're confident that they're in the right. It's clear Firaxis are well aware of this and I absolutely love that. This is how you do social commentary in games correctly. You don't beat someone over the head with it. You force them into a situation where they have to empathize.
Not happy about the lack of permadeath and not being allowed to fail missions. I guess theres a reason why everyone sounds so chipper all the time. Makes me want to join the resistance.
When you mentioned Chimera Squad at the end of the FF 7 LP, I legit didnt know what it was and I love XCOm so its interesting i didnt hear of this game untill now, gonna love watching this
Aliens speaking perfect English is really throwing me off. Like, sectoid hybrid and muton mouths aren’t really set up the same as human, they probably shouldn’t quite sound the same, especially since English is probably a second or third language (after ADVENT language and native sectoid/muton)
I'm always excited to see another xcom series on your channel! I really enjoyed this video. I wonder how much of this game is the breach / fight / breach paradigm, and will that have enough mission variety to sustain it like xcom did. Seems great so far though! Thank you, Mr. Odd!
I've ended up with Axiom, Torque, Terminal and Godmother as carry team. Simply because you need only SMG and Shotgun upgrades and you can ignore Handguns and Assault Rifles untill you have spare resources for update. Maxed also Verge and Claymore- they were decent in midgame but fell behind near the endgame as Godmother and Axiom provided more reliable field control and more pure DPS while Torque's abilities gives tons of tactical options for most situations and more reliable control then Verge h was able to provide. I never had Blueblood, Shelter or Patchwork so I had no chance to test the, yet - maybe in next playthrough. Looking forward to see how it will play out with your choices
It looks like nice spinoff, but im glad it is not official xcom3. The game feels more like a scifi than xcom. Yes, there is diffirence between it. It misses the main xcom feel of epicness about the last stand of humanity. And that's just not xcom without it. #CouncilGang
Did I really battle all the way through LW2 L/I to save the world from aliens just so I could then buddy up with said aliens? Well ok, but just no frickin archons, ok?
how do they just....speak like that. Those mannerisms surely would take longer than however long its been since xcom 2 for the aliens to pick up squad banter and vernacular
I mean if we are talking Eu/Ew then yeah aliens wouldnt speak human languages. But given that earth was occupied by aliens it would be weirder if they didnt learn english. Plus some of the aliens in xcom2 have human genes through gene splicing and vipers used to be thin men (infiltration units that would presumably speak english) tldr advanced alien invaders who occupied a planet would likely have the means to replicate human speech
Meh, rather have XCOM 3 with some of these new ideas implemented. Alien soldiers, breaching, etc. I imagine that's their plan with this game though, to test mechanics. Mainly hate that there isn't perma death. Could've easily allowed you to replace people if you had others in your roster. While adding another loss condition. Instead we got a forced reload. Probably a story reason for not doing that though. Regardless it's enough to kill any interest in the game for me. Several other things I'm seeing I'm not a fan of either. But they make sense for what this spinoff is going for. Just hope they don't come to the next main game. Timeline/initiative thing being the main one. Overall feels very distant from with XCOM is. I do like the personalites though. Would be cool to see something like that added to a main game.
Oh man, I dig the worldbuilding and storytelling. I don't even sweat the lack of naming customization due to that; the camera work during the breech sequence is rad! Can't wait to see what mods start to roll out.

Ace out.

Humans are nothing if not adaptable.

@@DeliciousFriendHastur 👌👌👌
@@time2go465 True ish, but there was also the broken trust at the end of XCOM 2, however it seems that the civilians of city 31 in general see it as it being the Elders who were manipulating and enslaving everyone, so the members of the other races were just as much victims as humans were.
It's like they saw your character-driven XCOM playthroughs and decided to make a cannon version. I like it.
Obviously! ;) Thanks for the support brother.
@@luketfer i'd pay 40 for this, considering i got the base game of xcom2 for free
It's fuckin weird to see the characters of XCOM goof around and fire off one-liners from a 90's teen movie.
did you notice that the muton operative's face looks really cartoony? Kinda scares me more than the other tbh.

Born and raised there so they're gonna sound exactly like they belong there.

Odd.
Xcom haven't been known for its rich novel writing
@@robertagren9360 That depends on how invested in them you were. I remember when I was a kid playing the original X-Com and the misery of my team of psychic badasses being blown to smithereens by a lucky blaster bomb when assaulting a crashed alien battleship.
"Young Adult version of XCOM-2" is actually pretty apt, yet that's why this game appeals to me. I like the tone. I'm going to be buying it shortly. I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as XCOM2, 1, or the original games, but just like you, I'm looking forward to playing.
Robert Hill visuals feels like they’ve been made by 2 indian art school students 🤢

A lovely spin on the traditional Xcom experience, grate to see former advent units are playable too, though im pretty sure all Vipers are female thanks to valin introducing the Viper king, torque's voice is at the very least very feminine
Belay that commander It seems my P.I.D. (personal information device) didn't update with your self correction.
This is such a cool and creative way to introduce a new game in the series by keeping the core gameplay but adding many new features
That could be... Extremely probable... You know, someone could be still hunting... Finger on the trigger...
Or it could be Vahlen working behind the scene with an army of cloned Gene-Warriors.

Hell yeah! I was really unsure about an XCOM styled this way, but it looks and just looks like it plays amazingly! Maybe I can finally get into some XCOM after all these years of lurking!

You do a fantastic job of getting all of us up to speed on the first few episodes; that way we can all just enjoy you crushing the later stages!
i just realized- director Kelly is the same person as Jane Kelly, the tutorial character who survives in XCom 2. They really put in some thought huh?
She was also part of a mission in the Legacy Pack. Firaxis likes Jane a lot.

You sold me this game, Odd. Fantastic work explaining and getting into the thick of it. Can't wait to see what's next!
"Ironman mode" doesn't seem to have much point in a game where you can't lose characters and must replay a mission if a character dies. For this game it should be renamed "screw your campaign when you encounter the inevitable early release showstopper bug" mode.
Arioch IV no. It just means you can’t reload every turn you are not happy with.
I can see people playing it
ironman is basically 'you wanna suffer bugs' and hardcore is 'you really are a masochist'
Yea, I talk about this the first moment we see her ;)
I LOVE the chatter between the squadmates. It...I don't know how they did it but it doesnt feel FORCED almost.
Obviously its not the natrual flow you would get in a situation like this but it feels pretty damn close.
*-City 31 Public News Broadcast Excerpt-*
Mayor Nightingale was tragically killed by a plasma bomb, just moments after being taken hostage by an armed human militia, it's identified members having no prior history of military training.

XCOM + ODD = How can it be anything but awesome-sauce?
Loved this video and cannot wait to watch the others. Thanks for doing awesome work, Odd!
Interesting unless I’m mistaken that War Of The Choosen skirmisher or Templar classes were not on display as chimera squad operatives. I was half expecting a Templar man or women to be one of the gang at the very least.
Zephyr is/was a Skirmisher but her class is different
zephyr is basically a templar. she has a punch thats basically the same as the templar gloves, that triggers momentum, and also gets parry when you later her
Loving the change of gameplay and aesthetics to this game, really happy you're stoked about it and agree the Chimera squad members having very distinct personalities makes up for the lack of customization.

If you perceive this game as a fan-made crossover of xcom and teen titans at a low price, then for a couple of evenings it will do.

Looks interesting. I wonder what that "meta content" in the character select is about though.
It shows which characters you've run into, which special weapons you've tried, and % completion of the different factions.

Wow is that a new thing? Like how the video is separated into sections... So cool!

Not even 4 min in, this game looks SICK. Great change of pace for the xcom series!

It looks like nice spinoff, but im glad it is not official xcom3. The game feels more like a scifi than xcom. Yes, there is diffirence between it. It misses the main xcom feel of epicness about the last stand of humanity. And that's just not xcom without it.

how do they just....speak like that.
Plus some of the aliens in xcom2 have human genes through gene splicing and vipers used to be thin men (infiltration units that would presumably speak english)
tldr advanced alien invaders who occupied a planet would likely have the means to replicate human speech
Haha that Alex Jones voicing the wake up people alien in the intro?
I am sure XCOM 3 will come too.
This spin-off is a test of those new ideas. What works, what people like/dislike. They'll use that info while developing Xcom 3
I think breach mode is a big game changer to xcom and i don't think it should be in xcom3, if yes... I will mod it till it's gone.
Oh man, I dig the worldbuilding and storytelling. I don't even sweat the lack of naming customization due to that; the camera work during the breech sequence is rad! Can't wait to see what mods start to roll out.
