    Ye Jacobites by Name
    (traditional/Robert Burns [1791], arrang. J. Ferguson, Dec. 2013)
    104 bpm
Chorus: [let chords ring on first time only]
    Em G D
Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear.
    Em Bm Em
Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear.
    G D
Ye Jacobites by name, your faults I will proclaim.
    Em Bm
Your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear, you will hear.
    Em Bm Em
Your doctrines I maun blame, you will hear.*
    *begin rousing strum on “hear.”
    Interlude: Em Bm Em
    V1.
What is right and what is wrong by the law, by the law?
What is right and what is wrong by the law?
What is right and what is wrong-the short sword or the long,
the weak arm or the strong for to draw, etc.
    Chorus:
    V2.
What makes heroic strife famed afar, famed afar?
What makes heroic strife famed afar?
What makes heroic strife, to whet the assassin's knife
or hunt a parent's life with bloody war, etc.
    Chorus:
    V3.
Then leave your schemes alone in the state, in the state.
Then leave your schemes alone in the state.
Then leave your schemes alone; adore the rising sun,
and leave a man alone to his fate, etc.
    Chorus:
[repeat final line three times, drawing out final “blame.”]

    Lyrics, in original Scots form:
Ye Jacobites by name, give an ear, give an ear,
Ye Jacobites by name, give an ear,
    Ye Jacobites by name,
    Your fautes I will proclaim,
Your doctrines I maun blame, you shall hear.
What is Right, and What is Wrang, by the law, by the law?
What is Right and what is Wrang by the law?
What is Right, and what is Wrang?
A short sword, and a lang,
A weak arm and a strang, for to draw.
What makes heroic strife, famed afar, famed afar?
What makes heroic strife famed afar?
    What makes heroic strife?
    To whet th' assassin's knife,
Or hunt a Parent's life, wi' bluidy war?
Then let your schemes alone, in the state, in the state,
Then let your schemes alone in the state.
    Then let your schemes alone,
    Adore the rising sun,
And leave a man undone, to his fate.

So I'm logging onto youtube and the first thing is see is a link to this video..."Hey! There's a cool song! I hope this guy is good!"
    .
What a shock to realize it was the Bard himself with a newly shorn baby face!
    .
And another seriously well rendered song, of course. You never disappoint!

Great performance, but it is not about any of the historic Jacobite rebellions. It takes its name and tune from an earlier song on the subject, but Burns adapts his topic to focus on the leaders of his own day, the new "Jacobites" who endanger honest people with their wars and plots. That's part of what makes the song so wonderful, and it would be less interesting if it was just about the insurrection earlier in the century. The genius of Burns lies in the way he can transform old songs this way.
