I have listened to many renditions of Danny Boy over my years, but this is the one I always return to whenever I want to hear it sung the most beautifully. There's something about this man's voice and style that pulls me in when he sings this song and I hear the original intent and meaning of this age-old Irish tune. Plus, I love the last verse that no one else ever sings. Being only one-quarter Irish, from my paternal grandmother, I can't claim Irish citizenship, but my heart has always lay with the Emerald Isle more than any other place on Earth.
That's awesome mate. I play that song when I'm trekking over kokoda(ww2) to my Trekkers. We stop at a site along the way where 2 brothers sang it together and eventually one of them slipped away from injuries he received earlier in the day. Thanks
Very well done, Jesse. Weatherly provided the alternative Eily Dear for male singers in his 1918 authorised lyrics. I wonder how many people have ever heard that one. Thanks for sharing. :-)
Lyrics -- I edited them to match Jesse's version so I can sing along Oh Danny boy, the pipes The pipes are calling From glen to glen And down the mountain side The summer's gone And all the roses falling 'Tis you, 'tis you Must go and I must bide But come ye back When summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed And white with snow For I'll be here In sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so You'll come back And all the flowers are dying If I am dead As dead I may well be Ye'll come find The place where I am lying And kneel and say An Ave there for me And I will hear Though soft your tread above me And all my grave Will warmer sweeter be For you will bend And tell me that you love me And I will sleep In peace until you come to me But should I live And you die for Ireland May not your dying thoughts Be just of me But say a prayer to God For our dearest Ireland I know He'll hear And help to set her free And I will take your pike And place my dearest And strike a blow Though weak thy blow might be Twill help the cause To which your heart was nearest Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy I love you so.
My name is Daniel.... And sans guitar this IS my memory of my DA singing this to me going to sleep (Jessie has a better trained voice.... But the emotions are the thing..... )
Great stuff laddy. I have a cheesey camera and I have a bit of a lung and throat issue currently but if you want to hear some originals and some covers check out my page. I would love to know what you think.
Chords and lyrics are in the video description for all of my videos. Thanks for stopping by!

Lyrics -- I edited them to match Jesse's version so I can sing along
Oh Danny boy, the pipes
The pipes are calling
From glen to glen
And down the mountain side
The summer's gone
And all the roses falling
'Tis you, 'tis you
Must go and I must bide
But come ye back
When summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed
And white with snow
For I'll be here
In sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy
I love you so
You'll come back
And all the flowers are dying
If I am dead
As dead I may well be
Ye'll come find
The place where I am lying
And kneel and say
An Ave there for me
And I will hear
Though soft your tread above me
And all my grave
Will warmer sweeter be
For you will bend
And tell me that you love me
And I will sleep
In peace until you come to me
But should I live
And you die for Ireland
May not your dying thoughts
Be just of me
But say a prayer to God
For our dearest Ireland
I know He'll hear
And help to set her free
And I will take your pike
And place my dearest
And strike a blow
Though weak thy blow might be
Twill help the cause
To which your heart was nearest
Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy
I love you so.
You had an earlier rendition. Is it still around? This one is great but there was something about the other one....
when are you coming to newfoundland
I will remember this version when my soft heels tread my fathers grave.
I love this song it reminds me of my girlfriends
