Barrett’s Privateers
(Stan Rogers [1976], arrang. J. Ferguson, Dec. 2013)
a cappella, 104 bpm
V1.
O, the year was Seventeen Seventy-Eight.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
When a letter of marque came from the king
to the scummiest vessel I've ever seen.
Chorus:
God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold.
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears.
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
the last of Barrett's Privateers.
V2.
O, Elcid Barrett cried the town.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
would make for him the Antelope's crew.
Chorus:
V3.
O, The Antelope sloop was a sickening site.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
She'd list to the port with her sails in rags
and the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags.
Chorus:
V4.
On the King's birthday we put to sea.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
We were ninety-one days to Montego Bay,
pumpin’ like madmen all the way.
Chorus:
V5.
On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight;
with our crack four-pounders we made to fight.
Chorus:
V6.
O, the Yankee lay low down with gold.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays,
but to catch her took the Antelope two whole days.
Chorus:
V7.
At length we stood two cables away.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
Our crack four-pounders made awful din,
but with one fat ball the Yank stove us in.
Chorus:
V8.
O, the Antelope shook and pitched on her side.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
Barrett was crushed like a bowl of eggs,
and the main truck carried off both me legs.
Chorus:
V9.
And here I lay in my twenty-third year.
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
It's been six long years since we sailed away,
and I just made Halifax yesterday.
Chorus: [Draw out final two lines] Видеоклипы
Is anyone else reminded of Stan Rogers
I think Stan would be pleased. Great true rendition.
Thank you for sharing
Xx
Is there any greater praise?
Only in the sense that Rogers is overrated
You pay great tribute to Stan, born here in the Hamilton area of Ontario, Canada, but every summer raised in Nova Scotia, Canada on the farm of his grand parents, sadly to pass away in a plane crash in 1983. Love your final two bar length note near the end ... a joy to hear and an awe inspiring ability. Stan would be proud.
Holy frig... buddy's got a damn good voice on him for music like this!
you could say holy "frigate" lol
What a wonderful voice! Stan Rogers would have loved to sing with you I'm sure :-)
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for your hard work Jesse. It is needed and appreciated. Thank you for helping to keep this great piece of culture alive.
Thanks for your support, FireRed!
I had to listen to this again. This is the best thing I've hear all week. Maybe all month.
It was hard not to sing along with this one at the appropriate points. Twenty seconds in, I gave up fighting the urge. ;) Love this!
The only other song I had heard JF sing was northwest passage. His voice is maturing so nicely. I really hope he makes a long, long career of music.
I am currently learning Bodhran and as a drumset drummer of 14 years it's proved quite a switch. Your tutorials have helped immensely. As we speak, it's 4am EST and I can't practice on the drum. So I'm attempting to play along on a binder. One of my favorite songs. Thanks a ton from Kentucky!
Amazing
Man, that was awesome! Great randition. Stan Rogers is smiling down upon you friend!
Guy, You are Genius !
I cursed that you'd pulled the old one, then I found this newer one. pseudodeduction is spot on.TY!
Thanks for the kind words. My CD is available on iTunes and at CDBaby (see link in the video description).
Really fantastic
keep up the great work Jesse. What you do matters.
I agree
Well done! Thank you for including the lyrics.
Damn...Stan would be proud. Thank you for not only keeping all these great songs alive but for keeping them alive in such fine fashion.
Wow! Nice job!! Your voice is very great! Keep on the great job! 😍⚓❤️
Fantastic Jesse!!
Man, as a tenor I'm just a little jealous of your baritone resonance. Well done!
Excellent!
it`s amazing!
Good job.
This is great!
Thanks, Chad!
We sing this practical every channel fever on the HMCS Athabaskan
Lyrics are in the video description for all of my videos. Thanks for stopping by!
This is by far my favourite version of this song, you sound absolutely amazing.
One of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite folk singers.
I like the way you sung it and the bodhran adds a nice touch.
Commenting so the algorithm will recognize that this needs to get passed around more now that Sea Shanties are suddenly a tiktok thing.
Truly incredible. Im from the coast and can appreciate the song and your voice.
love it! much better with the speed increased compared to your first version...
like your stuff a lot... keep er goin!
Wonderful cover!!
every now and then I return to your fantastic videos, Jesse and it's always a delight. Keep up the good work.
Great to see you again, Jesse. And a great job on a great song!
❤❤❤❤
Most excellent! Perfect!
Outstanding!
Great timbre to your voice man!
Wow, man! I really loved your first upload of this, and when I saw you re-upped it I honestly didn't expect that much of an improvement, I didn't think there was much room to improve. But your voice is so much richer in this performance, and it really adds to the somber tone of the song. You definitely have a masterful understanding of folk music vocals
Fantastic. Thank you.
wow, what an amazing voice!
Loved it, great job.
Damn dude! Nice job 👍
well done sir, you do this song great justice.
Dang!! what a voice you have! excellent rendition of a great song, good job!
I loved the way you made the song your own . Many can reproduce , few can create .
Way to go, man...wonderful.
Ohh, the feels!! Good job, man...good job...
i keep coming back to your music, and this is my fave, ime gonna get the cd with my next commission.
This is really good. Thanks for sharing:)
Wonderful ! Your voice is truly great. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for uploading this, I really like this song but had never heard of it before.
Great video, great voice and good work with the bodhran
You are very talented ... Love your videos
Great voice man, i've checked out most other videos for this song and you are the only one with a deep voice, deep enough to match Stan Rogers himself
That's....actually really hot....
Wow. Is this proof of Reincarnation??!!!
What a voice from the past!!!
Brilliant
Xx
So i was out camping and a couple of people sung this song... i wanted to hear what it was supposed to sound like so i found your version and i have to say i am MOST impressed! I think i have listened to everything you have posted and LOVE it all! You are very talented keep up the good work!! I
Love yer work, Jesse. Greetings from Australia.
I love your version! I also like the version of The Irish Descendants but this is great, As are all your great traditionals. Love from a fan from Amsterdam.
You have a great baritone voice, and you know how to use it!
Awesome tune ! You've done well my friend. I've listened to several songs you've done. My friends and I have done this song at rendezvous' ,18th century encampments, pirate events, and the like.
Great job man! I have been listening to you for a few years now, and I usually use your versions to discover new forms of Irish music. Most of the times your versions are very good and do the originals a great justice. I also think the new drum (well I don't know how "new" it is) sounds a lot better than the older one. Your talent is amazing and I really appreciate the heart you put into your work. I will keep listening!
bloody well done! Its a sight to sore eyes to see another of my generation treasure the old classics. A couple of centuries ago would've seen you as a celebrated shantyman on a whaling ship. Keep it up and God bless ye!
Great ending.
excellent. the real mckenzies and your versions are my favourite!
xo tyvm
Comparable only to stan Rogers
Man, I can't even believe this. Stan Rogers just gave you a thumbs up, buddy. Is there anything that you can't play?
Amazing but I think its a bit fast though
Very nice work!! How did you learn to sing like this? Lessons or figuring it out on your own?
Thanks, Russel. I'm largely a "by ear" musician. I do have a video on singing tips, if you're interested.
Would love to see you cover Ghost of the Molly Maguires/Sons of Molly =)
Amazing voice mann, our class has been told to look you up for inspiration in folk songs. You looked at any Geordie?
Nice drum. Is it a Bridget? Very nice rendition too! Well done.
Thanks, Sarah. Yes, it's a Bridget.
Having listened to quite a few of your videos, I would happily pay for a CD. Any chance you have any? If not, you definitely should consider it. Excellent songs.
Ah but Jesse F. I think you know about that already. Just finished your bodhran Ytube (outstanding by the way ... I have a Walton make) Your voice would lend so well to a band I know, Poor Angus - find them on Ytube as well, doing Barrett's, Sam Hall, and I think some others. They finished 2nd in the Canada-wide Searchlight CBC sponsored music hunt contest. Do you need a group to join :) .... did Stan's grandparents live in Scotia or New Brunswick?
i live about an hour away from where stan rogers died
slainte
More talent than Stan Rogers
You have some real talent laddie! Have ye considered going professional?
I don't think the drum works: either lose the drum, or try a bigger more resonant one. You have a great voice, that suits this great song, though.
