"Barrett's Privateers" is a fictional sea shanty written by Stan Rogers in the 1970s but evokes the spirit of the age of privateering. While the ship (the Antelope), Captain Elcid Barrett, and the disastrous Caribbean voyage are inventions, the song accurately captures the dangers of privateering life, the lure of potential riches, and the often grim realities faced by sailors during the late 18th century.

Being here in Nova Scotia, or New Scotland, I am a true Stan Rogers fan. As I have said before I love your covers of his and everyone you do. Hey friend. If you want something to bump to that's new? Listen to Heather Alexander/Alexander James Adams (it's the same person) I am NOT joking when I say Alexander was and IS the soundtrack to my life. Every major event. Every car ride with dad. Every high and low. Trying to sleep as a kid my dad played Alexander every night. Seriously listen to Alexander. He does children's songs and war songs and if you like loud bass? Go give him a listen. But just a warning, he, being seemingly a mild mannered sweet folk singer of a bit chaotic like the fey (that's his stage persona) hits decibels higher then pantera. You'll blow your speakers if you play it full volume. Ive killed a few myself that way listening to March of cambreth.
Here's my usual request to hear you guys cover Court of the Crimson King. I am kind of curious to hear what Headstrong would sound like as a harmony, though.

Oh the year was 1778,

We'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,

Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town.
(How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!)
For twenty brave men, all fishermen, who
would make, for him, the Antelope's crew!
God damn them all! I was told:

We'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,

The last of Barrett's privateers!
Then at length we stood two cables away…
(How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!)
Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din,
But with one fat ball, the Yank stove us in!
God damn them all! I was told:
We'd cruise the seas for American gold,
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's privateers!
The Antelope shook and pitched on her side.
(How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!)
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs,
And the main truck carried off both me legs!
God damn them all! I was told:
We'd cruise the seas for American gold,
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's privateers!
So here I lay in my twenty-third year,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now…
It's been six years since we sailed away,
And I just made Halifax yesterday!
God damn them all! I was told:
We'd cruise the seas for American gold,
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears!
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's privateers…
I've always liked the story told in this song, and I feel like someone could make a movie out of it if they wanted to, with this song playing during the end credits (though probably the original Stan Rogers version).
Stan Rogers
Do love me some Stan Rogers. Also, I'm adapting this for my goblin bard character in a DND campaign. Will come back with results.
your voices are so lovely and smooth like warm butter
Could you cover the US Coast Guard march; Eternal Father, Strong to Save; and Let The Lower Lights Be Burning?
Was thinking about this song today, thank you!!
Yes! So glad you did this one! Love the maritime songs over the country ones.
That's fabulous. Just fabulous.
AAAhhh.... one of my faves..... thank you Gentlemen! Love your work.... thanks for so many over these past few years.
Far more than adequate! This has made my day! You guys did such an amazing job.
As a huge fan from Halifax, NS, this makes so happy
So much energy, I love it! I would love to hear a studio version of Star of the County Down. Cheers, lads!
When I saw you gents in Phoenix, AZ, you opened with a cover/parody of Billy Joel’s The Longest Time, I’d love to hear a studio recording of it!
You guys covered my favorite shanty, and it turned out amazing! The harmonies were incredible, and you boys looked like you had an absolute blast making this! This was a joy to listen to, thank you for this!!
Beyond adequate!
I’ve genuinely listened to this on repeat
Well done lads! A proud Canadian tune! If you'd like to continue in our beloved songs may I suggest a cover of The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by the Arrogant Worms?
The Johns do their own version called "The Lasr Bristolian Pirate"
AHhh this is one of my most favorite songs and you gents did it such justice!!! It can't get more adequate than this!!
This song often plays at my favorite mini golf courses (Pirate themed :D so cool) love this cover.
Sticking with the Stan Rogers theme, but possibly something a little more suitable for Christmas time would be "At Last I'm Ready for Christmas"
You guys do some of the best Stan Rogers covers I've ever heard!
I've always loved this tune... It's such a deep tune... Well done boys... Well done indeed...
Mary Ellen Carter is a great song. I sang it many times while working. Not well but it carried me through.
Wow, just wow. Such characterization and story telling!
Excellent cover! 💙 The emotion and gags were balanced just right. Had a blast listening and watching
Spent much of my youth listening to Stan Rogers in my Mom's van and now my kids listen to y'all in mine. =) Thanks boys! (My Mom is now a fan of yours too.)
Hey friend. If you want something to bump to that's new? Listen to Heather Alexander/Alexander James Adams (it's the same person)
I am NOT joking when I say Alexander was and IS the soundtrack to my life.
Another excellent cover & once again brilliant harmonies 😍
It's been six years since we asked for this song and you only made it yesterday. ;-)
Good version! I'm used to Stan's version, of course, or live with a huge rowdy crowd doing the singalong bits, lol.
My favourite band covering my favourite singer with one of his best songs? Most adequate!
Here's my usual request to hear you guys cover Court of the Crimson King.
I am kind of curious to hear what Headstrong would sound like as a harmony, though.
Man that would blow my mind!
FINALLY!!!!!! 🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏 I've been waiting for this! ADEQUATE!
Oh, I'd love your take on a Dougie McLean song, maybe "Ready for the storm" or "Don't look down"? :)
I have been hoping this cover would happen for so long. You knocked it out of the park!
got some albums from PEI for the Longest Johns. Great stuff. Trying to how to just say how great you are, but I can't seem to navigate youtube!
This was wonderful guys ! Your Stan Rogers covers are always someting special ! 🌟🌟🌟 I'll continue suggesting Loch Lomond especially since hearing Andy's great take on a chillstream. A studio session of Sam Hall would also be lovely ! 😃
One of my favorites of the ones you all do on stream! Love how into it Robbie gets. :) Well done!
I was watching your old old video of this song earlier today and found myself wishing for new one! You guys are incredible
A classic! The "list to the port" was a nice touch.
I'd love to hear your take on The Silver Ghost by Merle Haggard.
Ah, I've been hoping for some time that you'd do this one! Excellent taste, exceptional arrangement, and a rousing performance, as always!
