Ventoy - How To Boot Multiple ISO Images From A Single USB Drive Guide

  • USB flash drives can be used as bootable media by using software such as Rufus or Etcher, but the problem with these is that only one image can be loaded at a time and the drive can’t be used to store anything else regardless of how much capacity it has. Wouldn’t it be great if your flash drive could hold more than one image and still be bootable?
    Well it turns out there’s a solution, and it’s called Ventoy. After formatting your drive with Ventoy, you can simply drag and drop image files to the drive and all of them will be bootable. You’ll be able to choose which one you want to boot when you turn on the PC. Also you can still use the drive to store other types of files too, so you don’t lose out on anything when you format your drive with Ventoy.

    If you're using Linux and the file isn't opening then here's how you do it: Open a terminal in that folder and type the following command:
    ./VentoyGUI.x86_64
    Typing ./ before the filename is how you typically run executables in Linux. I was using an Arch based distro while making this video and completely overlooked the fact that not every distro will open executables by double clicking the file!
    Also secure boot can cause issues so in general I recommend disabling it. This might be a problem for Windows 11 users since secure boot is required for that.
    And finally, Ventoy will work for the vast majority of images and ISOs, but there might be a small number that won't work with it.

      @@PhazerTech hate to say it but I've neglected moving forward with those items. I have my E3V2 working under klipper without webcam, working and configured so, for now, its enough. However, thanks for the kick in the pants to get moving forward with it again. As an aside, Marlin 2.1.2 now has shaping and resonance, so its klipper light, and would be suitable for my E2P.

      @@georgemitchell2288 Well if your current setup is working well for you then that's all that matters! I know you spent a lot of time on it and I feel kinda bad I didn't catch the problem sooner. But again, I haven't set up cameras with klipper myself and I never heard of crows nest until you mentioned it. Turns out it's specifically meant for RPi and will break non-RPi installations, which is something they could definitely make clearer on their Github page. The software you actually want is mjpg-streamer. After installing that and setting it up for your camera, you can connect it in mainsail by going to settings -> webcams. But again, no pressure if your current setup is working for you, just wanted to mention it!

    This is undoubtedly the best, clearest to understand, and informative tutorial I've come across for Ventoy. Believe me, I've seen a few, and most I couldn't quite understand, or there otherwise seemed to be assumptions made that we understood certains steps, or processes without them being explained, and thus they were left out - newbies like me need the KISS principal applied (keep it simple for stupid). Like many, I'm not very computer literate. This is my first venture "outside the norm." I intend to use your video, and I thank you for making it possible for me - an others of my skill level. I have just the one question. Instead of installing on a zip (stick drive) I want to install Ventoy and Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on an external USB-SSD, thus keeping Linux completely separate from my internal SSD. But, my question...to do this is the process the very same as you have explained here, or does it become somewhat more complicated? I'm eager and looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks again...Roo53

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  Год назад

      Thank you for that, I appreciate it! I try to make my guides easy to follow and approachable for everyone, so it's good to hear that. As far as your question goes, it sounds like you'll want to get two separate USB drives. The first USB drive will contain Ventoy and the installation image for Linux Mint. The second USB drive will be an SSD which will be used as the system drive for Mint. So you'll first boot up Ventoy, start the Linux Mint installation, then when asked where you want to install Mint to, select the external SSD. The process is fairly straightforward. Let me know how it goes.

      @@PhazerTech Thank you good sir. Where would people like me be without people like you? I'm still reading "what to do after the install" and a bit of other material. I'm determined to do it right - the first time. But I'm getting close to taking the plunge. I promise to come back and let you and everyone else know how I got on. Question: Can I (is it advisable, preferable) to run Ventoy and Linux on the same external ssd? I'm thinking, probably not, but if it is, I'd appreciate any instructions on "how to." Or, is my logic somewhat wonky? I hopethis finds that all is well in your world. Rgds, Roo53.

      @@roo5312 I don't recommend installing Linux to the same drive as Ventoy. It might be possible after resizing some partitions, but if it is possible then it will be more difficult to install and you'll probably run into headaches later down the road.
      Also forgot to mention I previously made a guide on installing Linux Mint to a $60 laptop. This particular laptop required the wi-fi drivers to be manually installed, but for the vast majority of PCs and laptops, you shouldn't need to install any extra drivers.

Well, I'm feeling confident enough now, so I'll be giving it all a run either today or tomorrow. At 71 years of age I'm a bit behind all the technology, but I've learnt a lot just investigating this. It has done me a lot of good, and I'm so looking forward to getting away from Microsoft. Some of the issues I've had, not of my making, are just unforgiveable. And support? What support!! Thank you for this. I love the random video drops even if this specific one came too late to save me a headache when I was installing a new video card on a legacy Dell tower that was rescued from a country club liquidation. My question is- I'm running Mint 21 and I extracted the zip folder into my downloads folder. When I double clicked the GUI file it did nothing but produce a log file. Do I need to open the folder under root access in order to run an "executable" GUI file, or is there a setting under system settings I need to enable?

    • @PhazerTech
      @PhazerTech  Год назад +1

      Hey there, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the random videos and I'm also glad you spotted this so soon! I was using Arch when I did this video and completely forgot that double clicking executables doesn't always work for other distros. All you need to do is open a terminal in that folder then type "./VentoyGUI.x86_64"
      Typing ./ before the filename is how you typically run executables in Linux. I'll make a pinned comment pointing out this massive overlook on my part, thanks again!

    WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! You absolutely can add other files to a bootable USB if there is enough room left.
    You can add installers for other software like Adobe, portable versions of software like Rufus, documents files, music files, picture files, ISO files, and any other type of files.
    You can put the in the same partition or create a separate partition. I have been doing this since Windows 7.
    I just upgraded the Windows 10 for Workstations on one of my machines to Windows 11 for Workstations with the Win 11 ISO on my Ventoy USB.
    This is how Ventoy works, by creating a tiny Linux partition at the end of the drive with the Ventoy bootable software. The Exfat partition at the front of the drive is where you place the bootable ISO files and anything else you want.
