The hog seems pretty ideally suited for a weaponlight for those wanting all the throw ever, the bezel size is still something to consider, but it's less of an issue on something like a patrol carbine. I'd personally take the larger bezel size of the hog in return for more throw (and longer runtime) any day.
While I was watching this video, I decided to browse their website a bit. There is now an adapter that lets you use OKW/PLVH2 heads on the 21700 battery body.
@@WerkzHolsters please do! the hog head is way overkill imo but the 18650 heads on the 21700 body seems like the perfect duty/work light to me, especially with the super long battery life they claim.
I have a HOG OKW for duty use, i ended up using get the adapter for the smaller head. Still hits. I got for the rechargeable batteries, US made. Would recommend if you got the money, and the everyday use for a good light.
So I judge handheld lights far differently than weapon lights. Mainly because weapon lights are purpose use/built and handheld lights or EDC lights are all over the map from looking for your dog in the back 40, self defense, and going out to check the mail or get the newspaper. And I want a hand held that has a even balance of beam and spill. Weapon lights need more beam/candela than spill in my opinion. As for large EDC handheld lights, I have yet to find one that does more than the Streamlight Protac HLX for my purposes. And it's hard to justify Modlite prices for a hand held that doesn't offer me, for my view and use, any more useability than the Protac. With that said, my normal hand held is the Macrostream or Microstream because my pockets get pretty busy when it comes to adding a light along with a pen and knife that I carry daily. But, to each their own. As always, a very good video Shan!
Hard to see carrying this around for any edc purposes. Micro and macro are hard to beat for that. I’d say this in the truck or a go bag would be great if you wanna throw $350 on a seldomly used light
Look into the Weltool LH1 head. Super clean usable spill with 89,000 candela. I bought one to put on my HOG body about a week ago, but now I just ordered the HOG OKW to compare the two. I will most likely be running the LH1 on the other HOG body (handheld) for EDC for the extra runtime & versatility and will keep the HOG OKW head on my AR9
When are you going to get some of the new Cloud Defensive MCH-HC Dual Fuels to test? I got mine about a week ago, and it is amazing! Would love to see how it does in your testing . . . .
I use a Cloud Defensive Rein 3.0 rifle light. And a Cloud MCH Duty handheld on my kit. For my handheld light I tend to want more lumens but still adequate Candela, so the MCH Duty gives me 1800 Lumens and 50k candela to work with. They are insanely good. But the use of 18650/CR123a batteries for me logistically was an incredibly important aspect of my decisions. On my pistol i use a Surefire X300 Turbo. My EDC handheld is a Cloud MCH EDC that was an excellent birthday gift lol. 1400 lumens, 40k candela and a smaller footprint that's not too big to carry.
I had got the hall with the PLH head and I was extremely blue in the way, how awesome of a light it is. I turned around and bought another one, but with the OKW head … some people may say that’s ridiculous having $700 350 a pop for handheld lights I too, was one of those people at one point in time thinking it was ridiculous to spend that kind of money on a handheld but the further I took my training in the more knowledge I got to me 350 a pop is one of the best investments I made read along with a firearm…. And this is me that came from 100 and some dollar stream light. Protac hL that I had for 10+ years and there is no comparison compared to the modlite !!! And somebody say the hog light has too big of a head to EDC will I make it work I utilize the thrym 2.0 switchback and it works
I recently got a Modlite handheld HOG with the OKW head. And I EDC it as a long-range light with defensive potential. Yes, really. Though I would definitely categorize myself as part of the very few willing to do so, as I also carry a medkit on my person as well as backup batteries to swap into my smartphones and my Modlite HOG. So for those who prefer nearly-empty pockets, conventional dual 123A/18650 handheld lights or single 123A/18350 handheld lights are better options, as they fit more-comfortably, which also means they are more likely to result in users maintaining program compliance (as Paul Harrell would say). Having a light on your person is better than leaving somewhere you are not at.
Months later, I still EDC my Modlite HOG. I've got an issue with it being unintentionally turned-on, getting so hot that it has almost burned me. With plenty, but not very common instances of the Modlite HOG getting switched on, I'm considering possibly replacing it with the Cloud Defensive MCH-HC dual fuel in the 18650 (2× 123A) size for the ND-protectors. But I can't deny there are few options with as high of a candela output as the Modlite HOG that still fits in a pocket (but barely).
In a shot show video they did show a booster adapter so you could use the smaller heads, on the larger battery body. I guess they never released it though?
Seems a little bit big for EDC, unless you have a jacket with spacious pockets or are a pretty big dude (not fat, actually big). I'm big and have zero issues holding and using a torch of this size, in fact I prefer 21700 to 18650 size-wise, but I'm more partial to "tube lights" with more uniform diametres. A head that, proportionally, flares this much is always gonna be a hassle to store on your person, unless you use a specific holster for it, and even then it'll hang bezel-up, so not the most ideal for quick draw, so you have to practice deploying it more to get used to reversing it. On a minor note, for a taclight, this is surprisingly elegant. Very "VIP security" looking.
Love modlite. I’d get one for home defense and I can see it being a good light for “duty use” as you stated. No way would I carry that thing as an edc. I prefer 1” bezel max lights for that but cloud and modlite kinda force you to go beyond that.
I have a question for you now this doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the handheld lights in this video but on your holsters I have a p365 standard and I do not have a weapons light for it but I do want to buy your holster and eventually buy a weapons light for my gun so I want to buy one holster like a one-and-done thing so when I get the same retention in the holster on the gun without a Tac light until I get my weapons light and still use the holster if not oh well then I'll have to buy another holster down the road later
A light bearing holster requires the light for retention. You would end up having to buy 2 holsters. If you know you are going to carry a light anyway, I would just plan to get the light and the holster for that setup. Unless you want to buy 2 holsters.
@@WerkzHolsters okay thank you very much I thought that would be the case so I'll probably just buy the standard holster and then figure that out later on down the road with her I'll carry a light on a gun or not then I guess I'll buy another holster anyway thank you again
@@WerkzHolsters got my hog light been carrying it for a couple weeks now I can see why many people will be pushed away from wanting to use it as a EDC light due to the head size but as I stated before I make it work, it does print due to the head size, but I tend to not even really worry about it printing .. I use the thrym switch back 2.0 clip even with the clip on it. If I want to get a better concealment, I can literally just put it in my pocket. Head up in the bulge from the head gets covered a lot better due to my shirt dripping over the top portion of my pocket that’s if I feel the need that I really need to conceal it… but it is all around a good solid light I got the pLH head and I plan on ordering another hog with the okw head
The top 3 companies are modlite, surefire, and cloud. Arisaka/malkoff as an honorary mention. M600DF-T pro is a real solid choice. Don't bother with the non turbos. 18650 OKW and PLHv2 are my go-to. I prefer the OKW. The cloud rein V3 is also really popular, but you lack the modularity and customization of the above 2.
Is there a plan to test the new streamlight protac 2.0? Looks promising! I'm thinking about grabbing one for my main rifle and retire my 1.0 to the AK project
@@GldenRetriever not unless you’re willing to take a much reduced output, at which point you might as well keep using the standard sized heads. Or you take a massive hit for runtime. The holster would also need to be larger. The HOG is not practical for and was never designed for pistol use. A rifle however, that would work great.
Looking at this light as a unitasker, it makes sense having a single, high output only. However the option to program for your needs is pretty cool too. Nice to see Cloud doing that with the new MCH.
Many will find a single high output, light very useful everyone has their own preference and modlite produces their lights for that particular clientele because a single high output blinding light can be utilize to be used in certain situations to control suspects/bad guys because those bad guys can’t do nothing if they can’t see because they just been hit with a light that makes their eyes feel that they have stared at the sun for 20 minutes
With the magnificent candela and the larger head this seems like they missed the mark by not allowing you to mount it on a rifle. It would be amazing for use on a rifle for hunting coyotes and such for those who can't afford night vision. Even an expensive light is a fraction of the cost of quality night vision.
@marc tyler Not new head, just the adapter and weapon mount. The HOGS reflector and size are what makes it push the way it does, a summer head would lose the benefits it has. At that point stay with standard PLHV2 or OKW Head
Best light reviews in the industry. Thank you
Need to show them in the field lighting stuff up with actual ranges displayed.
