Hey Anthony, it's okay to get a little existential sometimes. We all do it. Just wanted to drop a comment and let you know that I care. Hope you feel better, god bless you. Unsubscribed.
Even though the album is really good, it hurts knowing that he’s gonna stray away from his Apricot Princess/BCUWNBF sound. But I’m happy that he’s able to do what he wants.
Actually he said that he’s planning to focus more on his older kind of sound for his next album, which he says will be more lengthy and in depth, which I’m definitely looking forward to
As much as I love Apricot Princess (to the point where it is one of my favourite albums OAT), I can't help but think in this current age as we're moving away from bedroom pop, a sound similar to that genre would only do him a disservice?
Honestly the album changed my life. Before I was just a broke man living on the streets of Indiana, fishing for cash in every way I could. I once prostituted myself off to a gang of dogs just for half of an egg roll. The brisk chill of the winter only got colder as the nights went on - my only warmth an electrical fire outside of the laundromat. In the depths of my despair, I happened upon an iPod Nano tossed in the dumpster. The only thing on it? This album. Suddenly my world was brought to life and I dragged myself out of this hole I created. Hours later, I now run my own paper company - deforesting the Amazon. My beautiful wife and husband bring joy to every hour of my life. If it weren't for this album, I don't know where I'd be. 3/10
With everything you said about apricot princess here I’d love to hear your extended thoughts on that project one day, whether it be in a review or otherwise. Top 5 album of all time for me.
Yes! It's a great album Both the lyrics and every instrumental speak volumes to me in such a personal way I haven't had with any other album I get it's kind of simple and corny but that's what I like the most about early Rex's music; it's so easy to relate to
please lets make this movement to encourage anthony to review apricot princess. it’s actually one of the most beautiful albums i’ve heard, i’ve been wanting him to review the project since i’ve heard it years ago !!
@@biscoffology Omg for sure! My top 5, in no particular order are: Gorillaz - The Now Now Gorillaz - Demon Days Rex Orange County - Apricot Princess The Strokes - The New Abnormal Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher AP is definitely incredible though, and has a lot of unique strengths that those others don't. Very unreal. What are some of ur other favorites?
I can’t believe The Shade didn’t make it in to best tracks. Like HOW? One of the grooviest bass lines, it’s an incredible song, quite possibly my favorite song of his ever. I’d give this album a 9/10
i was surprsingly moved by this album. him honestly laying out his feellings and struggles without some crazy vocal techniques got me almost choked up. rex at his best so far. i think i'll be listening to this for a long time.
Glad Rex made a comeback from his last album. I always liked his album Apricot Princess and was kind of disappointed thinking he wouldn't reach those highs again. This was a really fun, wholesome listen.
Pretty insane how this chick perceives *sexual assault* to be someone making hand contact with a non-erogenous part of your body. This is precisely why actual SA allegations are never taken seriously. Opportunists ruin it for everyone
Shoot me Down was so different than anything I've heard from Rex and he managed it so well, I wish he experiments more with this tone. If anyone knows the genre this song resembles the most let me know. Really loved the piano bass mellow combo
that song reminded me a lot of man of war by radiohead in some ways, namely similar chord changes. They’re quite different songs but you might like man of war :)
Bro pony was fire asl his 2nd best album he dropped just under who cares? for me personally. The change in his style just hits different and made me a fan instantly. Song like face to face or never had the balls is just so hype and then you have songs like amazing and Pluto projector that’s just soothing. Hope he drops more songs like those.
I interpreted this album as almost a concept album, talking about his struggles w different things, and finally on who cares, it seems each time the chorus comes around who cares has a different meaning, and the last chorus it’s almost as if he’s finally healing and he knows ppl cares about him. I love this album so much. 10/10 album for me.
honestly this song feels like rex went through the break up with thea and instead of looking at it from the side of “well now i’m alone and stuck” he decided to try and change himself for the better and make more upbeat sounding songs, very different from apricot princess and bcus u will never b free and some what of pony but still very rex sounding to me, the shade and 7am have got to be the best two tracks maybe including making time if it was a bit longer and had some more substance, and the concerts for this tour are simply fucking amazing, 10/10 overall :)
Although standing in the middle of Anaheim screaming in Hebrew at a homeless man was entertaining I don’t think that’s considered a Rex Orange County review
Maybe it’s just me but I love the new Rex. It maybe because I wasn’t an og fan but listening to his old tracks and comparing it to the more or so recent ones in the album pony or the recent one who cares? His production in the sense of instrumentals has been way better and a lot of his lyrics I can relate to and that makes me like his music so much.
Wonderful review Anthony even before I threw on the video I said to myself this is a 7 at least not just agreeing with you for the sake of it I don't know how long rex orange county has been active but I just discoved him from your tracks of the week sagements and I'm so happy that I did because I loved this album and hope to hear more from him one of the top 5 best albums of the year so far for me 😁😁
whenever fantano talks to an artist before or after reviewing one of their albums, he gives them a positive score every time. what i would give to see fantano shit on an artist's record and THEN talk to them
7am is supposed to be self-loathing, that’s the point. You don’t get to a realization like “who cares?” Without first thinking “I don’t know if I can do this”
Decent 7. "Worth It" is a song of the year contender, and a couple other tracks like "Shoot Me Down" approach that level of quality, but the rest is only just good enough to make me want to listen to it more.
A 7 feels fair to me. A mellow album that's not groundbreaking, but the highlights are great and it feels like I'll keep this one in rotation for a while.
I love this album as much as apricott and Because U Will Never Be Free. I don't know who doesn't like these new ones just because they're different to the first two.
Interesting that you said the final stretch was not the best-it was the part that stuck out to me. I didn’t really enjoy the first half-especially Open a Window-but songs like 7 AM, The Shade, and Who Cares really did it for me. I felt like this album suffered the opposite of Pony’s problem, as Pony was excellent with lyricism but bland with some songs’ sound, Who Cares sounds INCREDIBLE but lyrically doesn’t stick out
Idk man, this album felt like a step in the wrong direction for me. The drums and strings are mad repetitive esp over the first half of the album. And honestly Rex’s lyrical quality dropped off a cliff after apricot princess. Curious to see how his next album pans out because he just seems to be straying further and further from the sound of the first two albums to something more sterile and marketable :/
I’d say the same but I’m happy with the direction he’s going towards right now. I feel like the only reason the strings are so common is because how good Pluto projector was but yes like why is it everywhere
Though the production is a slight step down from apricot princess, I feel like the melodies are at an all time peak. This is my favorite ROC album so far
I feel like this one lacks soul compared to Pony 💀. Pony just has this great use of building chords and such in every song especially with the large usage of wind instruments.
Pony is just so much better in every sense - Who Cares seems so flat when you compare them. The instrumentation sounds so fake and the drums are boring
