Bas rutten does that too and it works really well to throw off most fighters composure according to him. Then again Bas Rutten blocks pnches by headbutting the fist and it doesn't faze him. Maybe its a viable strategy maybe its just Bas Rutten special.
Whenever I land a good punch or kick I am shocked and apologize or ask my partner if he's okay. Sometimes a sparring round can get more intense and then I dont really know if was going to hard or not. But my partners were always okay. Thanks for the tips, keep going!
Well yeah but sometimes no, I took a backspin kick to the ribs which knocked me out (liver) and I suffered from some kind of bruise to the inner muscles which led me to a month of agony (couldn't even sleep well). Good thing is, I was used to take kicks that were coming from the front straight into my abdomen but now I "flinch" and narrow my guard which isn't too good either because now I risk to cause injuries to my sparring partners while "blocking" their backspin kicks. On the other end I don't want to be out of the gym for two weeks again
Sometimes someone lands a good shot on me and they always ask me or vice versa. But to be honest I don't really like when they ask me. If I'm hurt I'll let u know.
Alloverdaplace yes. I don’t like it when people ask me if I’m ok, as if they expect me to crumble in pain every time a strike lands. Half the time the strikes don’t even hurt and they ask!
Only time we sweep is when we're working on it. In sparring if we catch or something that would lead to a sweep, we'll actuality say sweep ahs then reset. That way your opponent knows that they were in a position to get swept without the chance of injury.
As someone new to Muay Thai these are really useful tips as I’ve found myself doing a couple of these mistakes without thinking, predominantly congratulating my sparring partner on a good shot. Thanks for helping me not be that guy anymore 😂
One thing you cant really teach, is hiding pain. It's a learning process, Some people have a very good poker face,(especially pro fighters) years of experience getting cracked and being able to keep pushing forward, alot of people cant bottle up pain, much RESPECT to especially combat fighters who get a hard knee to the stomach or a kick to the liver and PRETEND like it didn't hurt, that takes some serious mind control. I dont see to many people who post videos talk about that, again probably because. Like I stated it's a learning process, not something you can teach and be able to do over night by watching videos. Keep up the good work Sean. 😎
I learned IT somehow. Those shots just never hurt me. Maybe i didnt get hit hard enough but even rating combinations i never had trouble keeping a straight face. What i still havent learned it with is when getting hurt to the body to the liver. That pain is just too much sometimes. Also most people i sparred with just go for the hrad so i wasnt used to talking body shots. If u Can hide being hurt to the body then wow
@@knuckle-sandwichmma681 No matter who you are, if you get hit hard enough in your liver, you go down. It's a reaction your body has to trauma to the vital organs.
Nuclear Left Hook happened to me but not with my liver so maybe I’m just a baby. I was training for my first fight and this much larger person kicked me directly in the ribs (yes I was flaring my elbow up so I deserved it). My knees gave out and I barely got my arms in front of me in time to stop me from completely face planting. Large guy felt really bad, but I got back up after a few seconds of struggling to breath and survived the round (only because large guy felt bad and didn’t want to hit me hard anymore). Couple days later I was stretching and that area of my ribs popped. Had some tiny fractures. I felt very weak for being taken down by that kick. It landed beautifully.
I noticed when sparring especially someone new and they are "acting a little too friendly" I feel like that person is a little nervous still , when I come across someone like that I don't ease up really but I lighten up my shots so they are not worried so much on getting hit and as they get more confident and less nervous and realize my shots are not hurting them they give me a better challenge because they become more confident. But I do believe that sparring is where we are training to fight so it's not the time to be friendly I agree totally on that. But as soon as that "friendly" person gets More in to the sport as time goes by they won't be so nervous and be better at being competitive and more comfortable in sparring. That's my take on that subject
Facts. First time sparring, I was super friendly. I was telling them I’m new, and nervous. I was talkative, which is annoying when I think from my sparring partners perspective.
There is one issue with the first mistake correction though. What if you are not a fighter and don't want to be a professional fighter? What if you have a job and can't efford to be really beat up or overtrained to the point it effects your job? If you are sparring and you are not a professional, you should be able to stop for a moment if you get rocked, hit in the liver or get leg kicked hard enough to make you start to limp. I know you should talk to your sparring partner before hand and agree to how hard each other hits. Just saying not everyone is looking to compete and can't efford to gut through it sometimes.
Thank you guys for pointing these things out. I'm humble enough to admit that I have violated some of these. I didn't mean anything behind my actions but I could only imagine how it potentially came off in the past. When this pandemic is over and I am back at my dojo, I'll keep these in the back of my head. Once again, thanks guys.
Lol my second week at my gym in mt class I got paired to spar against an mma pro. I tried to sweep him because I had just been taught my first sweep. It actually almost worked. He said “nice” then swept me so hard my feet went above my head and teeped me in the face when we started again, not hard but enough so that I realized I fucked up lol. I guess he didn’t like sweeps lol. It’s weird though that someone who’s been there a long time would be bothered by it because at my gym pretty much everyone does sweeps in sparring and it’s been that way since day one for me.
@@connorperrett9559 I had been learning from/sparring with a friend who had temporarily lived in Thailand for about a year before I ended up at a real gym. @@danbeck1593 Ahh, that makes sense that the head coach wouldn't have allowed it! I went seven or eight months before my first sparring session at my gym. Granted, for the first five or so of those I was only going to two classes a week, so my progress was likely slower than many people's.

i'm a skinny guy, like I weigh less than 70 kg and i'm 180 cm tall, so i Always spar with people bigger then me and i can say that it helped me a lot to improve my skills
Dude, that sweeping on my 50% sparring kicks happens to me all the time. This sucks ass. I have long legs and every one wants to sweep me when they catch my kicks.
I’ve been doing MMA for three months and just had my yellow stripe test last night and saw most of this in myself last night, thank y’all so much for this!
As a martial artist this video is 1 of the best tips videos I've seen take note, example what I'm so guilty of is getting into a conversation with partners is I land a good hit then start talking about how good the shot was or vice versa, it just spoils the flow and that's not not how a real fight goes, talk after and stay busy
There was this guy at my MMA gym named Austin, and he was 127kg/280lbs of pain. He was overall a very good fighter, and I was just over half his size, so the only objective when sparring with him was not losing functionality of a leg for a couple days. Fortunately, I didn't have to spar with him very many times because there were plenty of other heavy weights to go around.
Man I do a lot of this stuff, talking, wanting a quick break after I get my bell rung/wind knocked out and I'm not a beginner per se. The gym I go to shows no mercy with sweeps too, some guys are all business
I make most of these mistakes, so next time I train I'm gonna keep my mouth shut, stay focused, and tank whatever damage I'm given. When I get hit I can take it pretty well unless I get punched in the nose.
Firstly, I like to have a distinction between a beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. I think that free sparring is not good for beginners. Further, the tips are great, some points are almost the same, for example #3 (emotion), #5 (personally) and #9 (to win) or even #1 (stopping). Basically we must tell all levels the basic purpose which is learning and training, not fighting.
I feel like the first few ones of 'don't show you're hurt/don't show emotion' only really apply if you're training to compete. Especially for beginners, getting beat up by more experienced fighters is not a good use of their time when sparring. If you're just worried about getting destroyed in sparring rounds you won't have any room to get comfortable and start adapting new techniques and skills. Its proven that when people are under serious duress they sink to the lowest, most basic level they are comfortable with and for most newbies thats just shelling up or throwing terrible strikes with their eyes closed. Perhaps I'm missing the point of what you're trying to convey but I don't think beginners should be hard-sparring.
Good points. I don’t think beginners who font intend to fight should do hard sparring unless they are athletic and controlled enough. But yes, I think those are key things to keep in mind
Really enjoying your content Sean. Kind of wish i’d seen all these tips before i trained at Diamond! Not sure how you can poker face a shin on shin clash with novice legs though, even with pads! 😬
it's funny I spar before knowing about the beginner mistakes and am impressed I don't do some of them but I'm glad to know that I do most of the mistakes and will improve to not do it again.
Great post. Beginners are the hardest to spar, Because they cant come up in skill we tend to come down and slow down, this is when I have had the most injuries. I do a slow front kick for them to get their timing right. Bang they jam your toes, or block with their elbow. Years ago, I trained young kids in Judo. I was very light and gentle. I went in to a competition and did this light little sweep. Then I thought WTF, I am going to get killed here. I know everyone has to learn but if you are in competition training, be careful sparring beginners. You will be criticised for destroying them or if you go too easy you get no benefit and they think they are red hot. Lose/lose. In regards to sweeps, I fully agree that both should agree, if not when you grab the leg simulate a sweep. In Karate sparring we always used to acknowledge a pulled powerful attack, which I still do today." MITRE" means, you got me, I am dead etc. In the old days, I am now 63, still sparring, If a junior did not acknowledge the technique of the Sempai or Sensei, the next one was not pulled up. You soon learned to acknowledge a good technique. The saying I have in our club for the kids. I look after you, you look after me. That way I'm not so worried about my welfare as you are looking after me. Of course you serious competitors need the real life sparring to sharpen up. Sorry about the long reply, I just enjoyed your thoughts. Osu.
What you say is 100% correct for fighters and those who want to get stuck in, but some people come along to learn a bit an not get too far into it. A great source of mellow Personal Training income and are a vital source of income for most clubs, these folks don’t want to take too many kicks or punch’s. Great video guys.
Guilty of at least two of these. I have definitely stopped a sparring session on account of a good liver shot. Used to have a partner that would trap me in the corners. So I got angry and did the same to him, landed a hard right cross, but dude stopped crowding after that.
I fight better in sparring but in exhibitions I don't do very well. If you could give me any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks, this video helped me a lot.
Honestly I needed to watch this. I recently sparred someone who's like 6'1" 180lbs and I'm easily 5'4" 145. Got picked apart from the outside, could not get on the inside and was visibly frustrated and emotional about it. Ruined my sparring for the rest of the time because I couldn't get it out of my head.
My previous sparring partners would struggle to hit me while throwing bombs and get upset that I strike with little follow through. I’m just trying to minimize damage on both ends.
Bro me and my friend we're sparring after going to muay Thai for like 3 months so we were still rookies and this guy goes for a powerful front kick to the face and it lands then his leg goes from my face and lands in my shoulder he pulls his leg down with so much force he dislocates my shoulder so I got front kicked to the face and a dislocated shoulder in 5 seconds
That’s a dick move. Btw there are three types of sparring, Light, medium and heavy and the last is when you are training for a fight. I disagree with Sean because you can go 50 0/0, not rib crushing 100 0/0. But he is right about the rest , especially the not stopping when you tired. Sorry to hear your luck but the other guy would have recognized your abilities and adjusted if he was a true pro.
@@donovanjones4175 yea at the time we were super new to sparring and still fiquring out what we were good and I have a super quick snappy jab that I keeped hitting him with so I guess he got annoyed and wanted to hurt me hahaha it was a light spar
When i spar i have a habit of talking like if i am hitting my partner too much because he is not guarding i tell him that. And when i get clean hit i lower my power to almost 0, and if he is guarding i deliberately increased the power
Good tips! On another topic, have you ever had issues with tendinitis? I’ve got it on my left inside elbow and it’s taking months to heal up, really missing training. Greetings from Bkk.
We do sweeps at our gym, but usually theyre very lightly executed unless in a hard spar, i dont like seein my guys sweep in a tech spar thats for sure. Lol
Damn i did all these mistakes, I was so frustrated and pissed off when i was sparring with a higher level guy because he didn't reciprocate anything i was saying. I see why now.
Bro it depends if he has some fights if hes used to it you can do more you know what im sayin but if he never really had a fight or if he never sparred or just a lil bit than take a step back and chill out foo or watch his reactions go a lil harder and if he doesnt respond well than chill out but if he knows what hes doing than go in

Number 2 is the worst for me a nervous habit I guess. Trying to talk less. Sometime I am just talking to myself out loud though. I do most of these but have been working on trying to stop these habits. As for sweeping I almost never do. I am 50 and when I get dumped it hurts. Only so much Geritol I can take.
PEOPLE ON MY MT GYM KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE SPARRING, NOT THAT I WANT TO BE A PRO FIGHTER THOUGH. ANYWAYS THE ONLY TIME I STOPED AT SPARRING WAS AT A NEW CLOSER TO HOME GYM WHEN AN EGO DRIVEN PARTNER BROKE MY RIGHT LOWER RIB (MI FIRST BROKEN BONE EVER) I SHOULD HABE BEEN MORE CAUTIOUS HAVING SEEN THIS AS#OLE HURT OTHER YOUNGER SPARRING PARTNERS. I ALWAYS STRIVE TO HAVE UNPECABLE SPARRING ETIQUETTE YOU CAN'T EXPECT THE SAME OUT OF EVERYONE ELSE. I MEAN IS COMMON SENSE, I WANT TO CONTINUE DOING THIS S#IT.
i have trouble with sparing, and im used to hiting heavy bags, but not people, i dont mind people hiting me hard, a person is a totally different target to a heavy bag, they have differeent hit angels and they move around, its tough i feel there needs to be more pad sparing in my gym than sparing, but my gym does too much sparing. sparing in my gym is messy. everyone in my gym has really bad muscle memory, so im kinda lost stuck in intermediate hell. get get taught to be fast fast fast, but no one trains their form enough
Actually that my former "Kru" gots fustrated all the time and yelling stuff, right during sparring sessions with me and others, is the reason I've canned him and started training/sparring with a personal trainer...
Greate tips! I'll to put them in use, but i have a question. Is it a problem if im sparring light, i mean for tehnique improvement, becuase I have an awful headache if i sparr hard.

Thanks guys for the tips. I never sparred with anyone before and I am hoping to join a gym after this virus crap is over. Hopefully sooner than later. Thanks again.
You do that and enjoy. You will never regret. I am 57 and been training since I was 22. I’m really missing everything terribly.
@@commonsense5401 i have been some what training since i was 3-4 self training copying moves i seen on tv movies like brue lee van dam have a bit of taekwondo but i wasnt the type to do things one way and one way only. check my channel if you'd like. got a lot if heavy bag light and hard training. punches and kicks. thanks for your comment. :)
i'm a skinny guy, like I weigh less than 70 kg and i'm 180 cm tall, so i Always spar with people bigger then me and i can say that it helped me a lot to improve my skills
Nice! That’ll definitely make you stay focused when you spar
Dude, that sweeping on my 50% sparring kicks happens to me all the time. This sucks ass. I have long legs and every one wants to sweep me when they catch my kicks.
Same here.
I’ve been doing MMA for three months and just had my yellow stripe test last night and saw most of this in myself last night, thank y’all so much for this!
I normally apologize too much when I land anything clean dunno why
You’re too nice 😘
@@seanfagan when I Spar beginners I normally switch to my weaker stance so I gain something out of sparring them aswell
I like how you described Austin 🤣
Great comments. I really enjoy this video. I will pass it along. Good stuff guys
I much prefer sparring with very experienced and or pros, it never turns into a mess but is always a big test.
Man I do a lot of this stuff, talking, wanting a quick break after I get my bell rung/wind knocked out and I'm not a beginner per se. The gym I go to shows no mercy with sweeps too, some guys are all business
Well at least you seem aware of it all! Just try to make minor improvements one day at a toke 👊
I make most of these mistakes, so next time I train I'm gonna keep my mouth shut, stay focused, and tank whatever damage I'm given. When I get hit I can take it pretty well unless I get punched in the nose.
I love to sweep .
Love the channel man 💪
Thanks for the love!
Love it, although I think sweeping is ok when sparring tougher guys with more experience. If it’s a beginner or light sparring then no.
I think I've been guilty of all of these at some point 😂 I try to be a good partner I promise
I think we are all guilty of them at one point or another
I just started sparring and I still lack control so if I see I hit my partner really hard I always stop and apologize lol
Yea it definitely takes a little getting used to that's for sure
Firstly, I like to have a distinction between a beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. I think that free sparring is not good for beginners. Further, the tips are great, some points are almost the same, for example #3 (emotion), #5 (personally) and #9 (to win) or even #1 (stopping). Basically we must tell all levels the basic purpose which is learning and training, not fighting.
can't seem to understand how anyone could dislike this vid... I wish more of my training partners saw this... LOL
Haha I know what you mean!
Haha I'm not even sure why i watched this entire episode, but still very informative.
Agree with it being annoying when yournpartner stops half way through a sparring session or even a drill and starts talking. Work first then talk
Haha better late than never!
it's funny I spar before knowing about the beginner mistakes and am impressed I don't do some of them but I'm glad to know that I do most of the mistakes and will improve to not do it again.
totally agree with the first point, pretty annoying when training partners disengage and drop their hands
It’s the worst!
Osu.
I appreciate your thoughts as well!
What you say is 100% correct for fighters and those who want to get stuck in, but some people come along to learn a bit an not get too far into it. A great source of mellow Personal Training income and are a vital source of income for most clubs, these folks don’t want to take too many kicks or punch’s. Great video guys.
Glad you liked it, thank you!
What great advice all the way through thanks coach!!!🙏👍👊💕
100% facts here !! Great input fellas
Thank you so much respects
You got it 👊
Whoooaaa, these two know each other!?!?!
Yup! 🔥😘
Don't bring you're girlfriend to a sparring session. 🤪
What if your girlfriend is you’re sparring partner?
@@seanfagan then that's a pass, she should have the the title of wifey status. 💪🔥
The mike Perry mistake
Well, she really likes to sparr with me
R A W D O G
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Always good info bro! Inspired me to start takin Thai boxing to add to my arsenal
Go for it!
@@seanfagan yes sir!
Guilty of at least two of these. I have definitely stopped a sparring session on account of a good liver shot. Used to have a partner that would trap me in the corners. So I got angry and did the same to him, landed a hard right cross, but dude stopped crowding after that.
Haha I know how that goes!
Thanks, guys!
Awesome tips!
Thanks so much!
Good tips. I'll make sure to shut up next time!
Damn that live tv clip with Mike was siiick!
Yea he’s a beast!
I fight better in sparring but in exhibitions I don't do very well. If you could give me any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks, this video helped me a lot.
A lot of it comes down to mental preparation, meditation, visualization, breathe work
Thank you.
Very informal, I was the fake friendly guy. After everyone peep that in the gym. No more of that shit.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks guy to inform..i have also problem.during my spar time. Then i found my misfake position. Thanks guy directed me to right way
Happy to help!
That doesn’t sound fun!
That’s a dick move. Btw there are three types of sparring,
Light, medium and heavy and the last is when you are training for a fight.
That was a great video thanks for sharing..)
When i spar i have a habit of talking like if i am hitting my partner too much because he is not guarding i tell him that.
And when i get clean hit i lower my power to almost 0, and if he is guarding i deliberately increased the power
That’s a good idea
haha first! thanks for the tips!
So on become second lol
You got it 👊🙏
Good tips! On another topic, have you ever had issues with tendinitis? I’ve got it on my left inside elbow and it’s taking months to heal up, really missing training. Greetings from Bkk.
No I’ve been pretty fortunate with injuries and my overall health
We do sweeps at our gym, but usually theyre very lightly executed unless in a hard spar, i dont like seein my guys sweep in a tech spar thats for sure. Lol
Damn i did all these mistakes, I was so frustrated and pissed off when i was sparring with a higher level guy because he didn't reciprocate anything i was saying. I see why now.
Thanks. That's some good tips.
Glad you enjoyed!
Bro my first sparring muay thai i took nearly 18 leg kicks from an experienced fighter
Great info fellas.
Glad you liked it 👊
super interesting and really useful
Glad you thought so!
If I land a big one should i be popping out more light combinations like in a fight or make sure hes okay first?
Depends on your training partners experience and skill level
Bro it depends if he has some fights if hes used to it you can do more you know what im sayin but if he never really had a fight or if he never sparred or just a lil bit than take a step back and chill out foo or watch his reactions go a lil harder and if he doesnt respond well than chill out but if he knows what hes doing than go in
good advice for a fight but all gyms spar different and some fighters barely spar so i dont think you need to treat every spar like an actual fight
Great tips🙏
Thank you 🙏
Great video guys but I dont see the link for fighting taller opponents course in the description.
Here are some free videos from the course >>> ironboy-experience.mykajabi.com/Op-in
Hi Sean nice advice dude! Always good for second opinions always I've been living and training in thai for 12 years, you train at bkk yokow gym ?

Thank you 🙏
It's kinda hard since I had a minus while spar, but hey nice video Sean :D
So cool , love this :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I CANNOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE
THANK YOU
Excellent tips!!
Glad you liked them! 🙏
I can have full on conversations while drilling combinations. But during sparring I might flash a smile but that's about it
Yea same here
Thanks 🙏
You’re very welcome
It’s just a matter of experience and endless repetition. You’ll eventually get off the intermediate level 👊
My first rule is always not trying to beat your partner.
is that jeff chan on 5:00
Actually that my former "Kru" gots fustrated all the time and yelling stuff, right during sparring sessions with me and others, is the reason I've canned him and started training/sparring with a personal trainer...
I just did some sparring last night and found the mistakes I made were #4, #6 and #10
ah shit haha i do all of this. I thought this would be a more practical video but damn right in the feels there...
I'm so new, I'm still learning to not apologise when I hit someone ffs lol..
Yea sometimes it takes awhile
Greate tips! I'll to put them in use, but i have a question. Is it a problem if im sparring light, i mean for tehnique improvement, becuase I have an awful headache if i sparr hard.
Sparring light is always a good option 👊
is mike related to joshua fabia?
