Floss daily...brush with baking soda...scrap tongue...rinse with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Have been doing the above for some 4 decades...have visited a dentist half a dozen times in that time, for broken tooth/chipped tooth/broken filling...and each time the dentist asked, "so you just had your teeth cleaned?" When I explained my routine...'silence' was the response.
No bacteria can live in bicarbonate of soda. I use bicarb as a mouth wash and to clean my teeth twice a day. Most times I see the dentist is when I break a tooth.
I am a former hygienist and disagreed with the whole concept of 6 month checkups, fluoride application and rootplaning to address minor periodontal pockets. I was disillusioned as a clinician and quickly realized that it was a business first and foremost. From my observations most people just need to practice consistent hygiene. The number 1 preventer of dental problems is the use of a water irrigator. I had patients in their 80s who used them and never had cavities or gum inflammation. Brush your teeth with a dry brush, covering all surfaces...and then go in with toothpaste. It's not the paste that cleans. Minty breath can be mistaken for clean teeth. Don't smoke. You will eventually lose teeth if you do. Don't drink sugary sodas with citric acid. My son went 5 years without a cleaning and had no concerns when he finally did. I think both medicine and dentistry overtreats for $.
Water irrigation irritate my gums.& I won't get a cleaning because it hurts & it feels like I'm going to get choked & strangled on the water going down the wrong way
I went 7 years without a cleaning but I brushed once per day (not twice) and drank only steam distilled water. No problems whatsoever when I finally did go for a cleaning and no receded gums.
I had not done cleanings for 20 years, and on December 6, 2023, I went to a dental cleaning. My blood pressure was extremely high, I hate going to the dentist. They did the cleaning anyway. I wound up that night at the ER, 2:00 a.m. and was diagnosed with COVID.
I used to go to a mainstream dentist, they told me I had a tonne of problems that needed to be addressed and they’d only be able to do a few at a time etc.. i wasn’t upset with them but changed to a different dentist that my family had recommended.. when I went there I told him “I have a lot of issues that need to be fixed” he did the X-rays and told me there was only one minor issue and that it wasn’t urgent. I was like how can that be? Are you sure? He said “I can do more work if you want me to, but I’m not really in the business of creating problems that aren’t there”…. My eyes were completely opened in that moment
Same thing happened to me. I was told that I had 7 cavities after a history of no problems at all! Decided to go to another dentist office that was highly recommended and they told me there were no issues with my teeth, that the former office was known for ripping off their customers!
I broke a tooth and had to visit a new dentist that was open on weekends. She told me I had several cavities. When I visited my usual dentist, he said I had no cavities and the other dentist was trying to pay her student loans. That was about 10 years ago and I still don't have cavities.
@@msanrai -Most of them are crooks. I went to one who told me I needed to urgently have 5 tooths extracted followed by implants. Thank God my insurance did not cover the treatment, so I went to another dentist who said I only needed just one filling. Before that negative experience, I had been to another dentist for a cleaning and check-up who told me I had two old fillings that really needed to be replaced with new ones. I didn't think nothing of it, took his advice I had him take out the old ones which were replaced with new fillings. Unfortunately, 6 months later, not only did the fillings fell out but both of my tooth cracked after biting into something hard when before, never had any problems before with the old ones. Thats when I learn not to fix something that is not broken. I went back and told the dentist the problem, but the dentist suggested instead of fillings, recommended crowns which I later realized was much more profitable. I gave him the okay to go ahead with the procedure. A few days later after he completed the job, and although the crown looked natural, it always felt uncomfortable, like a foreign object was placed inside my mouth. I told the dentist about it, but instead of offering a solution, he got both upset and defensive, perhaps even offended. For that reason, I decided not to get a crown for the other tooth. I found it strange that a professional in the dental industry would react in such a way. I decided never to return and told family and friends about him. Barely a few years later the crown felled off, now need a replacement and have to deal with this issue again. Back then I was very naive and just didn't know, really thought doctors had the patient's best interest at heart but now realized many of them are a bunch of thugs, chasing after money whose main motivation is to squeeze out as much money as they can from the patient's insurance. This type of offenses and unethical behavior needs to be punishable, and have dentist held criminally liable for performing unnecessary procedures. These so-called professionals should never be allowed to take advantage of patients, violating patient trust and should never be allowed to practice, but rather ultimately have their license revoked preventing them from ever practicing again.
@guillermone1 oh my gosh! I'm so sorry that happened. I had one say I needed an extraction. I went to another and he said the tooth was fine. Frustrating
This is really good information. I am a dentist and the vast majority of my patients do in fact need cleanings because they have calculus; I also see a lot of perio patients. But I always tell them that the prophy is not what keeps their teeth healthy - it’s the home care that matters most, and I do promote xylitol. I like this video and will probably start referring people to it. Thanks!
The key is to use a water pic regularly to get rid of the start of calculus. Btw...why do you encourage and use fluoride in peoples mouths? Fluoride is a neurotoxin. Brain toxin. Please read the book The Fluoride Deception and discover how they talked the ADA into using it in peoples mouths and water treatment plants. It is a byproduct of phosphate companies and is a toxic substance. So the phosphate companies discovered that they can sell it vs PAYING for the toxic waste disposal. Sickening.
yeah what is this woman talking about? the plaque people get cleaned is calculus, goodluck removing calculus with xylitol, its just a preventative at best
Are you a cardiologist too? "Xylitol may affect cardiovascular health" per the U.S. NIH. Higher blood levels of the artificial sweetener xylitol were associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke in people. Xylitol enhanced blood clotting in mice and isolated human blood. The results highlight the need for further study of long-term cardiovascular health risks from sugar alcohols, and artificial sweeteners that were thought to be safe"
@@MarcPagan This is pretty useless information cause they aren't ingesting the Xylitol just using it as a mouthwash. There is no way Xylitol is more dangerous than the neurotoxic Fluoride they put in your toothpaste, but I don't see you complaining about that.
I am finding that xylitol works after using for a month. Had I known this 50 years ago I could still have had perfect teeth. Thank you. Expertise with charm - compulsive watching.
@@vmoses1979 Just at night after the last tooth brush ~ 20:00. Then 2 or 3 xylitol mints over the next hours. Teeth feel cleaner and I stopped using Sensodyne because it is meant to plug porous enamel and I wanted to give natural repair a chance. I used to have occasional ache but that has totally gone - I assume the acid producing bacteria have been eliminated. My early years were in a smoky town during WW2 then a bonanza of sugar products after the war so my teeth were never really good. Now they will see me out thanks to this lovely lady. I may try her more extensive protocol.
Some good and some bad information here. Xylitol is a great product and it does work to reduce plaque. Dr Ellie talked about plaque (whiteish build up) as being small substances packed together and because of that it's not hard to get off so you need very little pressure. A good analogy of brushing is it's like dust on a butterflies wing, because it's more about being precise and accuracy than scrubbing the crap out of your teeth with a hard toothbrush (this causes abrasion or wear on the teeth). The reason a soft toothbrush is recommended is because the bristles are more flexible and more likely to find spaces between the teeth/under the gum to actually increase the surface area you are cleaning. I do agree that most people don't need a dental cleaning because they can do a good job keeping it clean themselves but that requires active thought, you cannot just brush your teeth on autopilot and expect everything to be clean. You need to get the bristles down near the gums because the gums act like a ditch and catch bacteria and build up the tooth, and sneak under the gums. Fun fact: dentistry has advanced to the point where more people lose teeth now a days due to gum problems (lack of effort or lack of cleanings) than they do from cavities. You can have the visible teeth be clean and still need a cleaning from bacteria/infection under the gums (bleeding on brushing/flossing is a sign of infection under the gums). However if you floss every day (or realistically every 2nd day because it takes time for the clumps of plaque to build up, once a day is just recommended because it decreases the likelihood you miss spots) then you will keep under the gums healthy as well and realistically don't need cleanings. It takes about 2 weeks of consistency to improve an infection (gingivitis), and you can get gingivitis a million times in your life. It will come back if you don't take care of yourself. Gums are more important than teeth, they're like the ground that holds a fence post up. You could have the most gorgeous fence posts but if there's no ground to hold them then those fence posts are coming out :). Source: Dental hygienist
I didn't start getting professional cleanings until I was in my 40's. My gum line was a mess and had receded many millimeters. Once I got a 6 monthly cleaning cycle, my gum line greatly improved and there was less bleeding.
You have to get the plaque removed every so often or it will build up behind your teeth. It's basically a calcified bone or mineral that hardens over time from the saliva coming from the bottom of the tongue and the other part is on the back of the mouth near the esophagus area.
Yeah I had the same because I brushed very poorly. But if you brush well and don't eat sugar, you won't need the ongoing cleanings IMO. It's just the first few to get the plaque all out. Jordan Peterson cured his gum disease by going on zero carb diet.
@@Tmate4444 - I not only brushed well, I was told to cut back on my brushing by the dentist. Said I was over doing it. Never was one to eat sugar or sweets or carbs. I’m 65 yo old. We tried every type of schedule of cleaning and not cleaning. There’s one thing not addressed by the author or the in the thread…..genetics. My dental health has always been its best with quarterly cleanings, water pic daily, flossing and brushing daily. Anything less results in tartar buildup, and sore and bleeding gums.
Saw your videos just days after my annual dental appt. I started your program. I was to have 4 fillings a month later. I added an 6 weeks to that appt. Had my visit two days ago. Doc said that my gums are pink, firm & looked very healthy, no visible placque and only needed 3 fillings. I'm over the moon. Thank you, Dr Ellie, from one who has had very bad teeth and gums my entire life.
Make sure you start adding xylitol into your routine Just chewing that little bit of xylitol government after you eat makes a huge difference. And I personally still floss but I don't floss until after I've started to brush my teeth so I'm flossing with the fluoride crest paste that she recommends and then I go back and brush again and start the rinse cycle that she recommends with all the various products. Congratulations! The link between bad teeth and heart attacks is astounding and the theory is is that those pieces of plaque are detaching from your teeth it's getting clogged in your arteries about 20 years ago when they did a huge study looking at Widowmaker type heart attacks that's exactly what the consistency was of those clots when they tried to find out what were the consistent factors All these individuals never flossed and that plaque was getting in the arteries clogging up taking men out. When I read the article. It just grossed me out. Started flossing every night no matter what. That was a huge game changer.
Thamk you so much. Since using xylitol I've seen big improvements. My gums were in a very bad way.I was even long in the tooth. The mid 2 at the bottom and 2 at the sides. The 2 at the bottom are almost completely recovered. The 2 at the sides are much improved but they were way worse. Getting there. You are changing lives. You are a blessing. ❤

@@RootzPickney It is explained in another video set, here: ruclips.net/video/60sAaXOONAE/видео.html Best of luck! I have been using Dr. Ellie's approach for nine months, now. And at my last cleaning, I was told to move my next appointment from 6 months to 9 months! I now have no more accumulating plaque, my receding gumlines are healing, a low-grade single-tooth infection has greatly improved, and a number of my teeth are showing proof of deep remineralization as they become increasingly whiter (from the gumline downward - now at half way!). I have so much to be thankful for. Thank you, Dr. Ellie, for sharing your incredible education, knowledge, and experience with everyone. This changes lives. I only wish dentists in my country had known of this when I was kid. So many of my dental experiences, treatments, and trauma could have been avoided. I went in for a cleaning about 1.5 year ago. They convinced me I needed a root canal and scheduled me for one within a few days. Mind you - I was experiencing no dental pain whatsoever, but they insisted I must be. My head was spinning over the diagnosis, so I went along with it. I should have stood up for myself and said no thank you, just a cleaning, please. This mistake cost me $1800 even with insurance. They never got around to giving me the cleaning I made the appointment for because the x-rays and root canal prep were so time consuming. I left feeling like I was ripped off and like I never want to visit a dentist again. I have a hard time trusting anyone in any medical field anymore. It's all about $$$.
I would pick a modest small dental office. They built a bunch of huge dental offices in my city. One has a jumbo screen that is 2 stories high that is turned on all night. That doesn't even include the equipment they had to buy to actually fix your teeth. It is no wonder that if you go there they will "find" something to fix in your mouth. My Dad often sees clients that come from these huge buildings for a second opinion and surprise surprise they don't actually have the cavities they were told they have, or at least not as many.
I totally agree with you about the medical integrity of dentists. I have had a few costly procedures that I have found out , with time, I did not need! I have been searching for an honest dentist for years now.
It's capitalism or monetaryism you dislike. That's what causes businesses to be this way. It incentivizes dishonesty. I don't support any other "isms."

They do not want you to stop coming for cleaning or have your teeth healthy.
Wow! If this information isn’t motivating to start using xylitol every time when finished with eating or drinking, I don’t know what is..? Well explained and thank you, Dr. Ellie!! ❤ 10 years on your system and I’m soooo glad.
Please BEWARE!!! Yesterday online I read an article warning that Xlitol CAN CAUSE HEART ATTACKS & STROKES!!! Apparently, this doctor is unaware of that!
I just discovered Dr. Phillips, and she's honestly the most pleasant person to listen to! She makes dentistry sound like a happy children's book😂🥰 Thank you for the info, Dr. Phillips! Subscribed!
Dentist here. The main reason for professional cleaning is largely to address periodontal disease, which is a different theme to the strep mutans talked about. Strep mutans is more relevant to dental cavities. I dont think a cleaning is necessary when one only has soft plaque and minimal calculus above the gum line. In that case, it is more about better home care regime consisting of good home cleaning and diet with minimal refined sugars. A professional clean is necessary when one has gum disease consisting of calculus that is affecting gum health, characterised by red, bleeding gums, deep probing depths etc. (Caused by different bacteria such as p. Gingivalis, not s. Mutans). To summarise, dental cleaning is for patients who are at risk of gum disease, not so much dental cavities caused by strep mutans.
My wife and I are in our 60s and each have had some form of periodontal work (Lanap for me). Our dentists recommend cleaning (sometimes "deep" cleaning) every 3 months. Of course, our insurance doesn't cover that many cleanings per year.
I've been doing the total mouth care system for 7 weeks now and had a hygienist appointment already booked so thought I'd go along and see what she said. She was impressed at how clean my teeth were and I told her what I had been doing. She was very interested and wrote down Dr Ellie's name so she could check out your videos. I have stopped going for "Dental Clearnings" years ago. Because, everytime I went for such cleaning, soon after I would have some kind of teeth problem.
Thank you Dr. Ellie, I have been using your system for one month. I noticed a big change within the first two weeks. I love how clean my teeth feel. I boldly decided to trust you and completely abandoned flossing (which I believe damages you gums), I used floss one time in the last 30 days. I really wished that I had found you, decade's ago! I take my time (even though I bought an one minute timer) and I want to gain every benefit of your system. God bless you. ❤❤❤

Dr. Ellie, your system has helped my gum disease! I had quite a few number 8 and 9 pockets in January. I've been using your system since then. I went to the dentist today (July 31) and had my numbers read and they have improved a lot! I had maybe three fives and one 6. The dental hygienist said not only did the numbers go down but the pockets are healing and not as open as they were! It's not perfect but definitely going in the right direction!! As she was cleaning there wasn't much blood at all! I wanted to let you know how much your system has helped me!! Thank you!

@@kati3849 my understanding is that pockets are different to recession. Your gums can be greatly receding but if your gums are still tight around the tooth you have no pockets. A pocket can often be seen visually as a kind of looser fitting gum around the tooth but dentists / periodontists will often measure them and call out the numbers before cleanings. 3 and below are ok (the lower the better). 4 to 9 are very problematic and probably mean tooth loss down the track unless you get things under control. Hope you don’t mind if I jump in here. I had my dental appointment last week. During the cleaning my hygienist asked how many times a day I brushed my teeth. I replied twice a day. She said the reason she was asking was because my teeth were so clean, very little plaque. I was excited, this protocol does work!
I have a tendency to build up lots of plaque or tartar especially on my bottom front teeth. I always go 1 or 2 times a year to a dental hygienist . I am convinced that the still minimal gums receding I now have are due to a former dentist I used to go to that was too rough handed and damaged my gums. Now I visit another hygienist and she is the best , the gentlest hand, never hurts me and I never bleed with her cleaning, the exact opposite of the previous dentist.
Thank you for this comment. I once could not go to my gentle handed hygienist and I went to some new one. I was bleeding and it was hurting. I did say to her that my usual hyginist does it softly and her reply was ' softly means not good job done. Must bleed to go to very book and cranny'. I never went back to the 'bloody ' rough handed one !
@orianam9835 yup, the other dentist said something very similar to me, my mistake was I still had another session with him after that, the next year... I should have complained to the clinic and should have requested another hygienist right away.
I love you Dr. Phillips! I've been brushing xylitol toothpaste with no fluoride and chewing xylitol gum throughout the day for 5 months now. I no longer feel any plaque buildup anywhere on my teeth. I used to be able to feel it on my teeth with my tongue in between cleanings, even when brushing all the time with fluoride toothpaste. Permanently done with fluoride and regular cleanings and not looking back! Thanks to you Dr. Phillips and miraculous xylitol!
Thank you Dr. Ellie, At this point of my life I do not have much tooth left - from cavities or root canals - I believe a couple of Dentists actually damaged my roots when removing the one with problems. And I now know that we can heal a tooth instead of a root canal - people tend to have heart attacks because the body can no longer communicate with the entire body. Too late for me now. I STOPPED using fluoride - that dangerous chemical. My mouth feels much better, no tooth issues or gums issues. We have been over done messing with our teeth.
Flouride isn’t dangerous 🙄 Moat places outside the USA have flouride in their water. Like many things it’s only dangerous if you consume LARGE amounts. If you are in that first category you can skip years with no issues at all. if you are in the second, youll have a problem every time. Same and similar experience. I haven't gone to the dentist for about 15 years until last year. Dentist gave me a cleaning and a crown which i can't say i did or didn't need but comfortable with saying ok. They were silver fillings that eventually got loose and every time I went to dentist they said I needed a root canal min $1200 or pull tooth because it can't be saved. I'm 38 and only have 1 molar bottom back right side, 1 top mid molar, and 1 top front left molar with a hole in it from metal filling falling out and I get depressed over it. I've always been low income and I can't chew a lot and my front teeth have taken the work and are experiencing more issues...I might need dentures or something and my confidence and smile is greatly affected 😮💨. Childhood into adulthood and I trusted dentists too much
I wish I had told the dentist that suggested I must remove my third molars to go take a flying leap. The consequences of their removal have bean poor food chewing, mandible miss alignment. Resulting in a protruding jaw line and excessive wear on other teeth.
I've been making my own Xylitol toothpaste for many years now. It consists of an olive oil base, with added baking soda, salt and xylitol. Works and tastes great! No need to rinse the mouth afterwards. But I do rinse my mouth religiously after food and/or drink - to rid the mouth of residual starches or sugars. I know coconut oil is commonly used as a base, but - I find olive oil much more pleasant..
@@lunahelena5329 I would start with one-part of each the dry ingredients, and adjust accordingly to what works best for you. Same with EVO - add to mix, to the desired consistency.
This makes a lot of sense. I get my teeth checked every 5 to 8 years. Every time I do the dentist is surprised I hadn’t come in for years. I just tell them I floss everyday and brush twice a day. They end up doing minimal cleaning.
This is wonderful. I often told my patients that if everyone did what we recommended they wouldn't need us except for accidents, jaw pain, orthodontics or prevention. Xylitol is a game changer
However, I also found many people who think they're smart not going to the dentist and brag they don't have cavities. Yet they have gum disease which is silent and resulted in some of them losing their teeth. So they really didn't do themselves a service by not going. What you're discussing here has to do with cavities----a completely different issues which readers here don't realize is a serious infection that studies show also affect their heart and other organs
I am glad I have watched this, thank you. I have just had a cleaning and have developed a mouth abscess, this is the third time after a routine clean, never had them normally, I was hesitant, but no more, I will be doing what you recommend, thank you.
Well said my fellow colleague. In simple terms, it's a game of numbers. When you floss and brush your teeth, you don't actually eliminate the bacteria. You simply reduce the bad ones (s.mutans) to such low numbers that aren't really harmful. After that they begin to slowly reform. It must be said that if you skip your oral hygiene, the bacteria not only begin to increase in numbers (making them more harmful) but also gradually show diversity in plaque composition. New bacteria show up,like porphyromonas gingivalis, that cause serious gum disease. There is also strong correlation between periodontal disease and cardiovascular problems. So it's key to maintain a consistent oral hygiene and cut down on your sucrose intake if possible. Stay healthy!

I went to a new dentist recently, for evaluation before cleaning, and I actually asked him "do I need a cleaning?", and he said "you don't need it right now, but it is recommended to have every 6 months". I heard what I wanted - your system, Dr Ellie, works! Thank you for sharing!
Omg they are not damaging the enamel. Don't listen to some rando on RUclips that's saying what you want to hear. It's not about just cleaning, it's about having your mouth checked. You won't know if you don't get checked. I had a large cavity that was difficult to see and was only found on X-rays. If I had waited a little more it would have reached the root and I would have tooth ache and require a root canal or extraction. I also had periodontitis. You know, the thing that cause people to lose teeth. I had no idea. She even admits she goes to dentists for an "evaluation". Maybe don't clean, but get it checked.
Oh, she never said they damage the enamel and I wasnt implying she did or anything. That's just always been my perhaps irrational fear i guess so yeah, I will def rethink that and maybe go get a check up now just to be on the safe side, ty.
@@MrWittyBanter Phew One thing you may want to do is, if you drink something really acidic, like a soda or lemon juice, wait half an hour before brushing so that your mouth PH can go back to normal. Otherwise there's some evidence that it can harm the enamel over a really long period of time. Otherwise, it's pretty resilient. Oh, and get the fluoride treatments. They strengthen the enamel even more.
@@Outworlder I quit my dentist because he's a liar and a crook. Unfortunate to see chicanery in the medical profession, but there it is. Couldn’t understand why I had so much tartar on teeth at end of each day and my gums had continued to recede in spite of using interdens brushes, floss and dental cleanings! Listened to Dr Ellie and began with the Xylitol mints and stopped eating so many carbohydrate snacks between meals. A dentist told my dad many years ago that the main thing is to do not let food particles sit on your teeth for over 24 hours. He said that is when they start decay process. So if you get it off all before bed you will be fine, unless you are prone to decay or have acidic saliva. But ideally it is best to brush after eating and at bedtime. I have only brushed and floss at bedtime for the past 10 years and have not had any issues at all. I do a very thorough brushing I spend about 5 minutes brushing and I focus on one tooth at a time. Only occasionally will I use baking soda and I only use a very small amount of toothpaste that is ADA approved. Also the high cost of having dental fillings and crowns and other procedures is so much that is big motivation to take care of my teeth.
i thought it was better to brush teeth before eating, so less sticks to them. whereas brushing after, unless nearly an hour later, can cause erosion through acid in the food ? is this not so, perhaps our dental surgeon above can tell us.

You need to be much more specific with your links. You say in the description get the proper tooth paste, get the proper tooth brush etc; and yet you aren't giving us the proper links. All the links are the same and they all land on a page that's very vague at best. The tooth paste link should land on exactly the tooth paste you want us to buy. So list the links that take us directly and exactly to what we should start with.

My husband rarely went to teeth cleanings, maybe once every 2 years, he has no cavities, no periodontal problems, no loss of teeth. My real experience with dental cleanings.

Today I had a dental appointment that was required for an upcoming hip replacement surgery. I hadn't been to a dentist for 5 years and was expecting the worst. Other than some plaque buildup (resulting in swollen gums in spots) and a couple small cavities, he cleared me for surgery. I had been fearing this visit but was totally relieved at the results. I will be following Dr. Phillips recommendations to reverse the progression of the cavities and am looking forward to my follow-up with my dentist in April. Hopefully her approach will benefit me and surprise the crap out of my dentist!

AWESOME video Dr. Ellie! Because of you, I am free of dentist cleanings once again. I never use to go get my teeth cleaned. I didn't have plaque on my teeth. People made me feel guilty for not doing it. It's when I started to go that my gums became a receding mess. I was bleaching, deep flossing, getting cleanings 1 time a year but I knew something wasn't right. I came across your Receding Gum video and started the process. I told my dentist about you and he was "Going to look into it". Well, after my year was up, I went in for a check up and told him almost all my black diamonds were gone and the few I had were reducing dramatically in size. When he peeked in, he was blown away! I went home and made a copy of your book and took it back to him with the updated video where you talk about regrowing your gums. He said, "I'm going to have to try this. I haven't heard anything back but he said, You're gonna put me out of business, and we laughed. He is a great and very knowledgeable dentist but can always learn more and he loves that. Thank you. My brother was doing part of your routine and ended up with weird bacterial patterns all over his mouth and his dentist told him not to use Crest toothpaste. I asked if he was using everything you said and of course that was a no. I said, it's not going to work unless you have everything Dr. Ellie talks about in her routine so we will see. I am very happy with what it has done in my mouth. The dentist said I was an anomaly and said I have teeth of a teenager and I am 62!
I am so happy I came across your video. Dentist would not do a regular cleaning on me, suggested deep cleaning scaling and route planning and I can’t afford it! I also have some bone loss. I want to keep my teeth healthy but I cannot afford $1000 dollars! I will follow your suggestions 😊

I am a witness that getting your teeth cleaned during pregnancy is important. I had HORRIBLE morning sickness while carrying my last child. Almost immediately after getting my teeth cleaned, it went away. It was like magic! I was so relieved.
Yeah I feel the difference immediately too. I wrecked my dental health for the first 30 years of life so I can really tell that going to the dentist helps me. I cannot live without it now.
What was the cause? Did stomach acids hurt your teeth? My ridiculous problem is that I only felt well physically and emotionally when I was pregnant, and I’m a bit beyond that now at 72. 😅
I suspect that in pregnancy, in order to protect the fetus, the body becomes hyper sensitive to any potential pathogens. So the bacteria in the plaque ends up triggering the morning sickness, which goes away when removed through dental cleanings. This is also why cravings for sour fermented things like pickles are common in pregnancy as lactofermented foods have antiseptic properties against pathogenic microbes.
@@chahahc Cool! My husband’s mother from Blackpool England craved pickled pig’s feet. I was never remotely queasy and I’m a sugar hound with not great teeth. But I like your theory. My daughter in law is puking her guts out. We’re going to be grandparents! I’ll suggest it.
I'm a dentist, I always give instructions how to brush correctly the teeth and i take my time demontrating it in front of the mirror every time to my patients so they can evade getting tartar and cavities. I have around 20% of patients who want to put effort into keeping their teeth proper. Proper nutrition and hygiene ,and only thing to see me for is yearly control.
Yup! 6 month cleanings can’t overcome poor oral hygiene. My parents always made sure I brushed twice daily and flossed at night. All the kids had yearly cleanings and I had those dental sealants put on my molars. Over 25 years later, everything is still fine. It’s not magic, it takes work.

Question, this Xylitol you said is a type of sugar that the bad bacteria don't/can't use. Want the bad bacteria just attach to the sugar they can use, are you saying that Xylitol gets rid of all other sugars in your mouth?
Every time I visited the dentist, something was wrong. I didn’t have discomfort until after the dentist visit. I stopped going, over 30 years later, I made an appointment, had x-rays & learned, no cavities but lost a filling. They wanted to dril it out & refill & they wanted to clean my teeth. I declined the filling,(I had no pain), but scheduled the cleaning. At home, I realized that if I went over 30 years without a cavity, why get a cleaning? Yes, I canceled.

@@brendasallerI don’t think the not going is the reason. You might have needed a filling but I don’t think the cleanings prevent you from getting cavities. Diet has a lot to do with western dental health. In the west we eat over processed mushy foods that make it easy to consume so our body doesn’t get the msg to our brain that we chewed enough & stop eating as it was designed to do when we eat solid fresh veggies & meats. Chewing harder foods make stronger jaw lines, too. Overcrowded teeth, which causes a lot of cleaning problems, was not a problem for Neanderthals or any society now that still eats a diet with chewy foods. It’s good for every stage of our digestive system, including our mouth. Chewing increases bone strength. Extra saliva needed to process chewy/raw veggies cleans teeth of food particles & keeps overgrowth of bacteria in check. That’s not even going into the sugars (including all the different names used so we don’t see how much they add to everything that we eat when they candy our food). If any of the top 3 ingredients in your food includes sugar- don’t eat it.
she's telling people to avoid cleanings. She is not a good person. She knows very well that preventative dental care saves lives, money and teeth in the long run.
Not sure about the sugar as the main reason for plaque built up. Did carnivore diet for 6 months and had plaque building up like crazy. Not sugar ingested. I wonder how?

I'm from Germany and I've had 2 cleanings in my whole life and I'm 29 now. They don't recommend it if you don't need it, at least that's my experience. :)
It absolutely depends on the dentist. Fellow German here, Ive been to several dentists and each one of them like to push certain procedures/cleanings even though the found your teeth to be in great shape in the check up minutes before:(
My grandma never cleaned her teeth or saw a dentist. She dies at the age of 90 without losing any tooth. I have tried to take good care of my teeth but at the age of 60, I have lost almost half of my teeth.
Its a very smart tip! But how often should I wash my teeth? Do I need to get Xylithol after each meal or after coffee with sugar? Is it ok to use Xylithol chewing-gum? Thank you!
I'm going for a teeth cleaning next week. I like the feeling afterward. The dental hygienist has shown me the plaque and tartar she's scraped off that causes tooth decay. I haven't had a cavity in years because I floss daily. 😁
It's not because of that. Others do much more than this for their hygiene and still got cavities. For you it's just a fortunate predisposition/ genetic
The average new dentist owes $300k in student loans right out of school. Check-ups in my area are $500-$600. Immediately, anything the dentist tell me is suspect.
Is that a Hollywood dentist charging $500-600 just for a "check up" which I guess includes xrays, cleaning and look over? That usually runs me about $240-250 without insurance. I am in NYC. If he does take xrays that is about another $75-100.
Floss daily...brush with baking soda...scrap tongue...rinse with diluted hydrogen peroxide.
Have been doing the above for some 4 decades...have visited a dentist half a dozen times in that time, for broken tooth/chipped tooth/broken filling...and each time the dentist asked, "so you just had your teeth cleaned?"
When I explained my routine...'silence' was the response.
No bacteria can live in bicarbonate of soda. I use bicarb as a mouth wash and to clean my teeth twice a day. Most times I see the dentist is when I break a tooth.
How much do you dilute and do you have to do it every time you brush?
😂 Thanks for sharing!

I rinse with salt water. Otherwise I do everything else the same. Haven't seen dentists in 10 years.
😮i've never heard of brushing with the dry brush first
Thank you for sharing. It does seem so forced to go every 6 months and I refuse to go any more than once a year but now it will be less LOL
Some dentists are crooks
The results highlight the need for further study of long-term cardiovascular health risks from sugar alcohols,
and artificial sweeteners that were thought to be safe"

@@vmoses1979 Just at night after the last tooth brush ~ 20:00. Then 2 or 3 xylitol mints over the next hours. Teeth feel cleaner and I stopped using Sensodyne because it is meant to plug porous enamel and I wanted to give natural repair a chance. I used to have occasional ache but that has totally gone - I assume the acid producing bacteria have been eliminated. My early years were in a smoky town during WW2 then a bonanza of sugar products after the war so my teeth were never really good. Now they will see me out thanks to this lovely lady. I may try her more extensive protocol.
how can I get xylitol?
@@pingli7853 there are candies / gums using it as a sweetener, might be available as packet of powder too
Some good and some bad information here.

That’s helpful. Thank you.
You’re one of the nice ones 😀
What are your thoughts on Waterpik?
Do you get mad at people when they say no fluoride for the children please?
I didn't start getting professional cleanings until I was in my 40's. My gum line was a mess and had receded many millimeters. Once I got a 6 monthly cleaning cycle, my gum line greatly improved and there was less bleeding.
You have to get the plaque removed every so often or it will build up behind your teeth. It's basically a calcified bone or mineral that hardens over time from the saliva coming from the bottom of the tongue and the other part is on the back of the mouth near the esophagus area.
Same.
I bought the same tools the dentist uses for about $50, and now I do the cleaning myself and save myself $2k a year.

I should have stood up for myself and said no thank you, just a cleaning, please. This mistake cost me $1800 even with insurance. They never got around to giving me the cleaning I made the appointment for because the x-rays and root canal prep were so time consuming.

Please be sure to get second opinions if you have ANY doubts at all!! I've been taken advantage of by dentists here before. Very, very sad to say MOST of the American doctors are all about $$$$$. Many will lie.
I had a dentist that wanted to take out all of my teeth because I had TMJ. I left him.
I had weak teeth that no matter how much I brushed and flossed and restricted my sugar diet I still got cavities and kept getting fillings in molars. Childhood into adulthood and I trusted dentists too much
Some dentists do not understand how to identify tooth decay. There are a lot of them about.
Good to know, I use salt alone.

This is why I love RUclips. Life changing advice right here. Thank you Dr Ellie!
Hello Dr. Ellie Philips! What about chromogenic bacteria in children? Any tips or remedies about that? Thank you!
My dentist gave me a mouthwash to use for ginvitis. She also recommended salt water to kill bacteria if I didn't want to use the mouthwash.
Sir, how about black on the teeth? I started having since recently.
Apparently, a sincere (ethical) professional - thank you Ellie, most informative. This is how science can and should benefit the greater population.

I always avoided it bc it felt like they were damaging the enamel. I was thinking about going but not now.Thank you! You're a real Dr, Ellie.😊

One thing you may want to do is, if you drink something really acidic, like a soda or lemon juice, wait half an hour before brushing so that your mouth PH can go back to normal.

My grandma never cleaned her teeth or saw a dentist. She dies at the age of 90 without losing any tooth. I have tried to take good care of my teeth but at the age of 60, I have lost almost half of my teeth.
I have been getting my teeth cleaned 3-4 times per year, and I also brush and floss daily. No issues at all.
Guess you can afford it!
You just want more money.
Its a very smart tip! But how often should I wash my teeth? Do I need to get Xylithol after each meal or after coffee with sugar? Is it ok to use Xylithol chewing-gum? Thank you!
i wish i had seen this video decades ago. thank you for this good learning!
Student loans that size is just an American phenomena. That would make me suspicious too if I lived there.
Is that a Hollywood dentist charging $500-600 just for a "check up" which I guess includes xrays, cleaning and look over? That usually runs me about $240-250 without insurance. I am in NYC. If he does take xrays that is about another $75-100.
I changed dentists a few times. They tend to recommend unnecessary work. They are skilled salesmen/women.
@@julianbentayeb3972 They have to pay their loans somehow.
@@josefmazzeo6628who’s your dentist?
I'd really like to see the links to the studies on xylitol to remove plaque bacteria please.
YES! I’ve been avoiding this money grab for yeeeaaaarrrrsss
