  • Hello lovelies! Ok… let’s roll up our sleeves and tackle my closet! 😩 👗 Since the beginning of this Minimalism journey, I've gotten rid of about 90% of my clothing- the "after" in this video shows you exactly what that looks like as I take you through my closet tour!
Minimalism to our family means each item in our home (or vehicle) has a purpose and gets used regularly. It's less about the number of items and more about the function of each item and how it contributes to our home. Let me know if you enjoyed this video! I can't wait to take you through the rest of the house as declutter, re-organize and minimalize!

🦋 minimalism is a journey, not a destination, for sure :) i've found the same thing - that my "standards"/how much stuff i think is "enough" is always changing (i.e. decreasing). i discovered "minimalism" four years ago, have given away so much stuff & reduced the stuff that comes in, and am at the point where i confidently call myself a minimalist. and yet now, in packing up for a move (to WA!) i realize i still have a lot more than i use on a regular basis. we're humans - we grow & change our whole lives (if we're doing it right :P) so it makes sense that our wants/needs/homes are never "done" being decluttered & organized.
when you're stuck in the cycle of excessive consumption, you're always looking for the next "thing" that's going to make you happy, and rarely (or only temporarily) satisfied with what you have. now, i feel like my mind has slowed down, and it has brought me to a place of profound gratitude, not just for my abundance but also for basic things like food & shelter, especially at this moment in time when so many people are struggling. being content in this way has made space for me to be extremely grateful for my good fortune, become aware & sympathetic to the inequities of the world, and hungry to learn how i/we as a society might better spread that good fortune around.
...yada yada yada - i could geek out about minimalism all day. thanks for sharing your journey! it's been great to follow along!

Decluttering is like an onion. Kinda stinks and has a lot of layers. No matter how seasoned of a minimlaist or organizational guru you are, theres always room for improvement and sometimes things just need to be redone!! I think the second round of decluttering is always the most informative because you've lived with less stuff and realize that maybe how you had things for when you had a bunch of stuff no longer works with the new amount of stuff :) Ive redone my laundry room 4 times... and my linen closet 3!

Tanja Hermann I get tired of hearing this from Europeans. 🙄 Plenty of people have too many clothes and aren’t in debt. It happens almost by accident. You may change sizes and have trouble deciding when/if to get rid of things. In my case, three pregnancies and anorexia/recovery happened and I’ve found myself with a confusing pile of stuff! That not even factoring in gifts. My mom and grandma like to give bags/clothing/jewelry as gifts.

I am doing an after-(8 years of)depression-cleanout so there is a little bit more for me to get rid of. And one thing I learned very quickly was that you always have to make more chaos in order to clean stuff properly XD But I can say that I've cleaned out most of the trash 6 weeks after starting. Now I "only" have to find a place for the things I want to keep.
My prolem was that when I got new furniture (age 12) that was more "teenager appropriate", we didn't do a cleanout. So my big-ass closets (just a tiny bit smaller than the ceiling) were filled with "kids stuff". So basically everything I bought as a teenager didn't have a proper space to go, so it piled on the ground.
This year I had to spend more time in my room (for obvious reasons) and I finally decided that I want to do a cleanout. Alongside with doing sports twice a week and going from vegetarian to vegan. I just turned 20 and so I thought that this was a perfect time to restart my life. So now I watch a bunch of cleanout videos to help me stay motivated. Yours are definetly the best

Yep! Ive gone through my rooms and spaces at least 10 times each.
Some have been more fine tuning between declutters to maintain but most have been bigger seasonal declutters.
When you do really well getting one space down to an art and then go into previously decluttered spaces from like 6 months or longer ago you see the difference in emotional progress and also decluttering muscle youve built and they tend to stand out like sore thumbs now that youve grown and adjusted to better organised more minimal spaces and also curated your habits and refined yourself more.
So yeah working in a cyclical seasonal layer through your home is what ive found most people end up doing after rage purges or those first big easy declutters.
Even if its only a handful of things at a time its always good to maintain your spaces by going through them any chance you get. When i hang up laundry or find homes for new things i go over and take mental notes of what ive been hanging up a lot and therefore what ive been using and reaching for checking the condition of items that sort of thing so that the next time i go in im in a better head space to really be honest with myself and practical about the fact that certain things are no longer me and wont serve me in the future by staying or are past their prime and that if i do love them then i should invest in a quality version of it that i can maintain and have last much longer like linen dresses instead of plastic ones etc made in first world countries and not in asian ones usually poorly. To go along with that im teaching myself to sew and using natural materials like old sheets as fabric for a shift dress i can wear to bed and around the house.
Decluttering is like cleaning it has to be part of your household maintenance its never a one and done and its never going to be perfect and stay the same because we arent.
Great to see you emphasise this a lot of channels dont and one of the reasons i love your channel and minimal mom and erica lucas etc is because your real practical and challenge yourselves and grow with your audience.
    😊😊😊

Drawers are a game changer. I used to prefer shelves but since I found the Konmari Method nearly two years ago I haven't looked back. The filing system is the best! You'll love it ❤
For the dividers: if you need three divisions in a drawer and you don't want to purchase three dividers, you can purchase one and put it in the middle of the drawer, and that'll get you the three divisions. I do that and it works great!
For the small drawers: I reuse single-use plastic containers that come with sweets, food or groceries, or mobile phone boxes. They are the perfect size for my underwear. I know you always reuse things you have at home, maybe you'll find something that works and looks great :)

Even thought it’s in the closet, if your young ones will have access to it ever and pull on the drawers it could tip over on them (sadly IKEA is responsible for dozens of toddler death due to dresser tip overs)
    Love your channel btw 💕💕💕

Those plastic drawers almost never work, they warp and bend making it hard to open and close the drawers.

LOVE! I go through my closet every couple of months and it's amazing how our idea of how many clothes we "need" shrinks over time. I personally have enjoyed having fewer options because it saves me time as my outfits come together easier AND I know everything I pull out to wear is a tried, true, & loved item. I'm greatly enjoying binge-watching this series!

That was so satisfying; and I think the outcome is amazing - the chest of drawers is beautiful and will look elegant anywhere and the amount of storage space it provides is astounding - it really makes me rethink how to use a space, as there was an assumption I was holding on to that putting such a large chest of drawers into a wardrobe would eat up more space and it was worth which was completely incorrect. Thank you for sharing - this is great motivation!

🦋Its always fun to watch your declutters! And decluttering is such an evolution! I’ve been doing this for at least 6 or 7 years now myself, and I have finally realized that part of the issue with my own closet has been figuring out my style. Now that I really have pinpointed all that, I’m letting go of more that I never thought I would but that just doesn’t fit my aesthetic. And of course, pregnancies, body changes, lifestyle changes, all contribute to your ever changing style aesthetic and how your closet organization works for you. Its been fun having you take us along on your own journey! 😊

The more you do this the more you let go. My husband and I share one of those dressers and I have about 7-9 pieces I hang for summer and spring.

🦋 I love this series. I may be a little obsessed and have now started going through my apartment, room by room. My closet is tomorrow. Like you, I've learned used isn't necessarily for me. This time around, my husband and I have made the investment for new, good quality furniture that will last us for years.

Minimalism is a journey and you have to keep going over and through stuff.. If you watch/follow some well-known longstanding minamalists you will learn this! And you are right.. Each time you declutter it gets easier. This is because you have lived more minimal for a period of time so the next time you revisit and declutter more it is quicker and easier to.. I am on round 3 or 4 in my house.
Most minamalists say "once you have everything to a level of minamalism that suits your personal needs... Then 2x year (eg Spring and Autumn) is enough to stay on top of the stuff!".. Minamalism is an ongoing journey! And a key part is to use the "one in one out system" .. To keep things from increasing again once you have reached your level of minamalism.
Your wardrobe looks fab... Make sure you bracket the IKEA draws to the wall.. Ikea have had problems with the draws tipping over and crushing/killing small children! The brackets should have been included!

I completely understand. We’ve, I should say I have, been going through our house for years. Constantly getting rid of stuff. But this past 4 weeks or so, I’ve gotten more cutthroat too. I’m currently 22w pregnant with baby #3 and I had really bad morning sickness, and then kids and I got sick, and it ended up with 16 weeks of me not being able to do anything, and it made me realise I had let things accumulate again, and I needed to get rid of more stuff and find better organisation for some areas of the house. At least I’m about a third of the way through the house, and by the end of this weekend, I will only have 2 rooms left to go. It has to be a slow process for me, but I’m honestly loving how everything is feeling and looking. My son is loving it too. He’s even starting to clean up after himself more because of it too. To keep our house clean.

Don’t be hard on yourself, you have a very tight space for a couple’s bedroom, an office and studio equipment. When you choose your new home, I’d say at least one additional office/studio room is a must! I know it’s tough when you have children, every every room really adds to the cost. You could buy an older home with both formal and family living and dining rooms and use the formal ones for practical uses like offices and a studio.🙂

Question, would you be interested in doing a new video on minamalism and where to start if your in a transitional space. Even through Quarentine like we are now, and our position is a transitional space until we move and get settled after Covid but I'd be interested to hear your take aways on something like that. Love the vids, I'm from The Wads channel and have stuck ever since your last partnership on the cleaning vids
