Woodturning a Fantastic Bowl From a Flat Board

- This is my first attempt at woodturning a bowl from a board. The inspiration for this piece was from a video by thepapa1947. For a full instructional video on this process, please watch his video. Link below to his video and channel. I tried to stick to his instructions for my first attempt and feel I was fairly successful. I used Walnut, quilted Maple, and Padauk in this piece. I’m not sure I like the idea of using Padauk next to maple as it really hinders the finishing options due to the Padauk bleeding into the Maple. I used a gloss clear lacquer on this piece to limit the color bleed. This was a fun a simple piece to make that required a few special setups. I really enjoyed making this project and now that I feel confident in the technique, I will likely adapt it to try some different designs in the future. I had some successes and failures in this video. I tried and failed to keep the first ring from bouncing around on the lathe when cut. It was a bit of a rushed idea and I’ll come up with something better next time. I also definitely need to get a smaller parting tool. The one I used is a 3/16”x1/2” wide and burned the wood a little when cutting. I tried to modify it after cutting the outer ring and it seemed to work better but I think a smaller cutting tip would be ideal. Maybe a 1/8 inch tool would work better. Thank you to my friend Matt for welding me up that stainless steel tool rest for making the angled cuts. It might not be a pretty weld but it did exactly what I needed it to do. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day!

Even if this hadn’t turned out to look so fantastic it would still have been a masterclass in abstract planning. A work of art.
I was wrong. I told my wife that this video was clickbait and that you can't turn a bowl from a thin flat board. I was wrong, great video!
Sorry you had to admit you were wrong to the wife. I hate when that happens. Haha. Seems to happen when I’m right too tho…. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I mean.. thumbnail is definitely clickbait, but still cool bowl.
@@shivaargula4735haha
That photo made me curious though.
@@TheWorld_2099 Thus the 'Clickbait'.

I hear ya…but he did deliver, so this might be one of those ‘in between’ categories.
I was planning to skip to the end to see the results but I watched the whole thing. Amazing
Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
😂same!
Wasn't exactly sure what he did!!
Had to watch it a second time!
Thank you for doing that in a way that saves wood. I hate seeing people make a huge block of wood and then carve most of it away into the trash
Exactly my thoughts
He can make three bowls out of the three boards he cut too, i think
If he used a scroll saw with the table tilted at an angle to part the circular pieces, he might have been able to get a few more levels and therefore a deeper bowl.
Exactly. I love the wonderfully creative projects made with lathes, but always disliked how terribly wasteful the process is. Especially with wood, where the chips can't be recycled.
Yes, thank you so much. I mean it's not like this stuff just grows on trees... Oh, wait!
What a fantastic way to prepare a blank. I didn't expect the pattern to line up so well when stacking the rings.
Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day!
Once you see BACON you cant unsee it.
I was thinking that at best it’s going to be a plate with a little lip on the edge and a slight dip to the center.
But DAAAAAAAAAANNNG was I wrong! I was wronger than wrong! I mean, I just watched him do the impossible, (according to MY brain) and I STILL can’t wrap my head around it! It’s absolutely insane, and beautiful! Everyone in this comment section is giving you a standing ovation!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼well done sir!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼
Thank you very much! Appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

I may not know a thing about woodworking, but I can tell he does!! What a joy to watch.
Wow! I'm still not entirely convinced you didnt use any magic when making this bowl. I'm astonished at how well it turned out, given how skeptical I was at the outset. Beautiful work!
I promise no magic wands were used in this video. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
On the 2nd angled lathe cut I knew what you were up to. Very clever. Very cool.
finally a woodturning vid with planning to minimize the waste material
Absolutely beautiful, and tied together with some soothing tones. Perfect combination, congrats on such a stunning piece!
Thank you very much!
*_You sir are an ARTIST with an excellent taste in music!_*
Thanks!
Color me impressed. I was calling b.s. with that title. I'm glad that I watched.
There was an "a ha" moment where I figured out how he was gonna do it.
Seeing the finished result, you can't picture a flat surface at all. I'm Amazed.
You really know your stuff, buddy! Beautiful work of art! 😊
Thank you so much 😀
This is a perfect and absolutely stunning achievement!
Thank you for sharing, and thank you for this magnificent video, perfectly demonstrative, without the slightest unnecessary blah... blah... blah... , and with an absolutely delectable musical background.
I really enjoyed myself... 😃
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed watching that, utterly mesmerising.
Would never have guessed that could be done.
Loved the background music, very soothing 👍😊🇦🇺
Awesome, thank you! Hope you have a great day.
Scott
You're a master craftsman and equally a master artist. What a joy to watch.
Really cool. The combination of color and the nice random curves makes for a pleasing result. I think I will try that. Thank you.
Nice work, Scott! I was thoroughly mesmerized the whole time.
Thank you! Hope you have a great day!
Artisanal activities have something magic about them.
Fantastic handworking and idea. Thanks very much for presenting it in this video.
Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment. I hope you have a great day!
I like the efficient use of material, the design and the finished product. Great work.
Thank you very much!
I used a similar method to make a large bowl, 16” diameter, with Poplar and Padauk. It was fine until I Started putting on the oil finish, and the Padauk bled so bad into the Poplar that it liked like raw salmon. Learning experience. I bought some African Blackwood and tested it first for the bleed…..ended up pairing it with Purpleheart - turned out fantastic!
What did you use to keep the parting tool straight on the angle cut? I've tried to find a commercial version of something that is shown in the video but haven't had any luck.
@@bradgregory2470 I actually made two identical platters and cut cylindrical rings from each to stack up for the bowl construction. I am left with one 13” disk that I do make angled cuts into with a 1/16” parting tool for a different type of stack-up bowl. I fitted a 2 x 2 block onto my tool rest and cut various angles into it to steady my parting tool for 90, 45, 52 and 60 degree cuts.
Omg, all that from one board. That is wild.
You are a genious. This was amazing. I learned a couple of thing just watching this single video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely beautiful Scott! Compulsive viewing, I could not take my eyes off the screen, all the best, Mike
Thanks Mike! Have a good one!
I love lacquer.
I am normally a bigger fan of plates, but when you witness the creation of such an amazing bowl, my hand is forced and I feel compelled to say something. Awesome!
Thank you! Hope you have a great day.
Scott
For your first piece, INCREDIBLE! Really enjoy your work and with fans like Mike Holten and the Papa himself, your work hasn't gone unnoticed. Have a piece of mesquite set aside for the same project. Well done, my friend

Thank you very much!
I was getting tired of turning bowls now this adds a whole new dimension thankyou
This guy earned a sub with this one. First time seeing the channel. The skill, technique... amazing. The music is good too which is always a plus
Thank you very much! Much appreciated. Hope you have a great day!!

Already knew this technique and it's amazing, just as the end result.
The pattern is beautiful. The red wood just pop's like crazy.
Congratulations.
Very cool! Relaxing to watch before bedtime. Beautiful bowl.

I'm spellbound. What a beautiful ingeneering mind!
What an absolute beautiful video and the resultant artwork was magnificent!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Ingenious, maestro.
I had to keep rewinding to try to figure out how it worked for some reason. Awesome job.
This is so beautiful!✊🏾
Awesome I am so excited to do these bowls from boards. You are truly a craftsman
This was definitely fun and I look forward to trying out some new designs in the future. I hope yours turn out great. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Woah! I'm not super familiar with woodwork. But I was definitely curious enough to sit and watch how this was done. It took me watching two or three rings to realize the approach. This is super impressive, and the finished bowl looks so seamless. Thank you for sharing, I learned something today.
Really nice work!
Thanks a lot!
Great video and project. I'm sure Gary would be proud!
I hope so! Thanks for watching. Have a great day!
This is really awesome! So many cool tips a newer wood turner can pick up and this is a great method I can teach to my kids who are learning the craft.
Thank you very much. There is a link in the description to a step by step tutorial by the original creator of this piece if you would like a more in depth explanation of the process. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Wow, amazing and you make it look easy.

Beautiful piece, Scott. Makes me wish I had been more adventurous with my bandsaw and lathe back in the day.
Thank you Glenn. And thanks for helping out with the new camera. I really appreciate your help. I’ll get it figured out eventually. Have a great day!
Thanks for linking the original video!
Of course!
Very impressive! I love how you get a lot less waste out of that method.

Such a genius idea! I love it!
Amazing! Well done.
Is it wrong that seeing the flat board makes me think of bacon?
Absolutely not! I love the way you think. 🧠 🥓
Depends if you like animals
@@MrCDAJR I love animals! Even the ones I eat.😉
It’s never wrong to think of bacon 🥓
I had a few friends tell me the same thing! Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day!
Scott
Wow! Really like the way you cut the slices before the 1st glue up. Nice job.
Thank you very much!
Incredible work, Scott! Such a great method! I had no idea how you were going to turn that board into a bowl. Turned out beautifully and excellent choice on that tiger maple. Well done!
Thanks Cam! Appreciated as always. Have a great day my friend!
I watched it happen, but I can't believe it!
Lot of fun to watch and to turn, well done!
Thank you sir. Have a great day!
Nicely done, nice to see some work done that’s not a bunch of epoxy like many of the turners today.
That is gorgeous, great wood to show off. I love it
Thank you very much!
Very good job! 😃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! 😃
Very impressed by the trust in the hot glue. I would have never done it, but, l just learned something new.
I felt the same before trying it. It actually worked very well. Just make sure to use plenty. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!

In high school, back in the 1960s I made salad bowl for my mother using very similar techniques. I didn’t know it was unusual.
I gather skills like this were much more common in the early to mid-20th century, nowadays it puts you in a very small elite of craftsmen still bothering to keep the profession alive in the face of so much competition from automated industry. They also stopped teaching stuff like woodwork in school, which is really sad.
@@boiledelephant Sad.
Simple ingenious. Hats off Sir.👌💯🙏
Thank you very much. Hope you have a great day.
Scott
wow, that is truly creative.
Beautiful bowl!!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful job!
Thank you!
As said by others: a masterclass!
I saw this awhile ago on ThePapa1947 and wondered if I would dare try it. Now that I see you have executed the technique I will have to give it a go. Great job, it is beautiful.
Go for it! Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day!
Yes it is very easy to do.
Just gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
Great video. Love your creative work and the music.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic! I'm glad I ran across your channel earlier today.
Thank you very much Jenny. I’m glad you found it too! lol. I hope you have a wonderful day

We did this project in woodshop in High School in 1979... although we used one solid plank of board and used a bandsaw to make the angled cuts. I wonder if my Mom still has it? This one of course looks WAY better than mine! Awesome 🙂
Very cool! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Hermoso trabajo,felicitaciones!!!.Saludos desde Argentina!!!🤗
That looks gorgeous, and I would love to try something like that, but you had to use 3 things I dont have in my shop... Band Saw, Planer, and wood glue... Other than that, I think Ive got it!
Flat bottomed bowl, you make the rockin’ world go round
