My 2 cents: if you are not a pro but a dad wanting to capture your family precious moments then this lens is more than enough. I've run into countless situations were my kids won't wait until I reach for another lens in my bag to take a wide-angle shot or telephoto, not because they cannot understand the "hold a minute" petition but because they are running around and not thinking on posing

excellent review recently picked up the tamron and have been very impressed, sharp all through the range, very speedy to focus, as quick as my 300mm prime, no reason you couldn't use this for pro use, lacks the bokeh at shorter lengths compared to primes but overall a worthwhile versatile lens worth every penny

Very informative video. I had The Tamron 16-300 when I owned my 70D but sold my 70D and purchased the 80D when it came out and found the Tamron 16-300 was not able to do some of the features of the 80D that it did with the 70D (particularly in live view) so I sold it too. Now, several months later there has been no new 16-300 but I assume the old 16-300 has been updated to cover live view features of the 80D. Is that a good assumption since I would like to purchase another Tamron 16-300 since I found it very useful. Maybe a Sigma 18-300 since the Sigma is upgradable via the web.

What do you think is best? Does the tamron compete with the canon in the long end?

Thanks for the review. I have tried two copies of the 16-300 Tamron. Both have shown inconsistent sharpness at the wider focal lengths, even at f8. I say inconsistent in that one corner can be good and another very poor and far worse than shown on your video. One copy was poor on the top left and the other poor on at top right! Did you check all corners in your reviews? I was wondering whether it is the sort of compromise one would have to expect or whether worth sending the lens off to be checked/calibrated. Any views? Thahks again.

I own this lens and use it on my D800, nice lense btw and enjoy using it, but it is a DX lens which yes drops the megapixel count (halves it) on the D800 and but still great pictures and 300 becomes 450 (1.5x crop). I did notice the last few moments of your video you say the first shot is 16 and last is 300 but on your lightroom it said 251??

thanks , for your nice video i think i'll buy this one or 18-270 is also good instead of buying 18-55 and 70-300 , switching lenses and having them all the time with us , is really something that most of don't like and especially people who love to travel , and we really need it when we are out as a best walking lens i think this one is good to capture all good moments with pictures that we should talk without switching pictures
one last thing , in the video last minute when you zoomed on the rocks the zoom range was only 251mm , best regards

  • @srobart
    @srobart 10 лет назад

Informative video, Toby, nice job. One thing that people might want to consider before buying this, if they like the more telephoto ranges is that the Tamron 70-300mm WITH VC is full-frame too, whereas I don't think this lens is (but I don't know for sure). The old 70-300 without VC is APS-C only, but the newer one is made to cover a full frame sensor, which is nice if people upgrade to full frame in the future.
I also have a question, what's the add-on at the top of your menubar (on your computer) which tells you the temperature of your processor? I've been looking for an addon like that, but haven't been able to find one which also had temperature. I've been using menu meters since os x 10.1 or so and it's a nice addon, you can change the colors, but it doesn't do temp.

Great review! I was at that KKK Rally in Anaheim a few weeks back taking photos and realized afterwards that I NEED something with range! I don't shoot professionally (yet?) but I had an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm and in such a chaotic environment, changing lenses was indeed a hassle. I just bought this lens yesterday because I've heard some great things about. I'm not too worried for the Chromatic Aberration (though now I know what that is! I took a picture of the moon at 300mm and noticed some random odd coloring at the edge of the moon).
I can't wait to experiment more with this lens!

    Hello!
I am a follower of your channel on youtube. Congratulations, you make a very good job!
I've seen what you did revies two lenses and would give me your opinion, or recommendation to choose one.
    I'm torn between:
    Tamnron 16-300mm F / 3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
    and
    Tamron AF 18-270mm F / 3.5 Di II VC PZD -6.3
Basically I want a lens that is versatile for landscapes, some portrait, make a few shots, some macros. I am asking the opinion because the 16-300mm costs here in Portugal or imported around 400 pounds or more, while the 18-270 is not such a new model and costs here around 200 pounds. My doubt is whether the difference really pays to buy the 16-300 relative to each other.
From what I saw in your these two videos were the ones that made up for me more for a Canon 18-135mm STM.
I have a Canon 700D and am beginning in the world of photography.
If you want to take a look at my work in the event of help you advise me, is the will.
    www.flickr.com/photos/ricardoespires/sets
You'd be a very valuable help.
    Thank U.

PhotoRec Toby A question that you may or may not have an answer to... I recently purchased the 28-300 FX version... and at 300mm there is SIGNIFICANT focus breathing... so much so, that when compared to my 70-300 Nikon VR, within 10m, the Tamron at 300mm is the equivalent to 200mm on the Nikon. And even out at 30m+ focal distance, there is quite significant focus breathing at 300mm on the tamron.
Did you notice any significant focus breathing on this 16-300 DX version?
I own both a Nikon D7100 and a full frame D700, which has a DX crop mode. So was thinking of instead getting this 16-300 and using it in DX crop mode when needed, or exclusively on the D7100... But wanted an opinion from someone regarding it's focus breathing at longer focal lengths, specifically all the way at 300mm.
And if you ever do any review of the 28-300, it is definitely something to note and compare. I have some sample side by side images if you are interested in that as well.
    Thanks
    -Todd

Hello! I could say I'm your fan! I broke my kit lens so I've spent like 50+ hours over the past 3 months reading and watching reviews about some lenses and I've found yours always to be the best ones! So I hope you could help me in this one! I'm a student from Mexico, the minimum salary is about almost 4 dolars per day, so you can imagine how expensive is to buy for us even the cheapest lens. I'm can't decide between the Tamron 16-300 or the Sigma 18-200 C. Here, the Tamron is exactly twice the price of the Sigma, so thats a big advantage for the 18-200 so far, but I find the fact that the Tamron gives me 16mm extremely helpful! Also the 300mm instead of just 200mm is better. But, it seems that Sigma offers much better quality, so if you were in my situation, which one would you choose? Thank you so much for your amazing helpful reviews!

I love the Tamron 16-300mm because it can serve all purposes for amateur photographers who are interested posting their photos on social networks. The lens has many issues though. Super zoom above 10X are inherently inferior. At nearly 19X the problems of the 16-300mm are unavoidable. Some of them can be corrected and some others aren't so important.
The strong geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, vigneting and low contrast can be easily corrected digitally. The flaring is better to be avoided. The very soft corners even at close apertures is a serious problem. However the photos on social networks have low resolution and the lack of sharpness isn't so obvious. Digital sharpening can aid too.
On the other hand if someone is interested on photographs for social networks why should buy such a big heavy lens and not a smaller lighter super zoom bridge camera?
The answer has to do with the image sensor. The APS-C dSLRs cameras have better dynamic range, better auto-exposure, much lower ISO noise and faster and more accurate autofocus than most super zoom bridge cameras.
The main problem of this lens is at its shortest focal distance. The 16mm (24mm equivalent) are very helpful with indoor photography but in this lens the combination of wide and super telephoto leads to huge distortion problems. But again distortion and vigneting can be corrected even with the SKRWT app on iPhone. The softness of this lenses is serious in the case of prints. But how many print their photos?

Thank you so much for the reply. I already have and use the sigma 70-200 and was wanting to possibly get this also for even closer images. Was trying to analyze if it is work it or not. Thanks again.

+deltafit I do hiking in Sahyadri mountains quite often.. And I needed a single lens which has a pretty wide angle and good zooming range upto 300mm. My first choice was tamron 18-270. But then this lens came out, I checked it and it impressed me quite well. The only con with it is that the focusing is a little slow, and you get more chromatic aberrations compared to canon's lenses. But overall for the price you pay, this lens is a good deal. :-)

Hi, I have the Nikon D5600 with 3 lenses: Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 and the OLD Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 (no VC). I want to replace the last two lenses (I'm definitely keeping the prime one :)) with the Tamron 16-300 for the sake of flexibility/less weight. What are your thoughts on that?

Go with Tamron 18-400 mm. Good reviews for that lens.

They make a canon compatible lens that will work well with your T4i - click this link for the canon version www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1029404-REG/tamron_16_300mm_f_3_5_6_3_di_ii.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287

One more question if you have time. To compare this to full frame focal length would I use the 1.5x multiplier? If so, would this lens be around 24-450mm with a 35mm sensor? I am using a trusty Canon T4i body. Thanks again!

    • @photorectoby

Pete Slonka Canon's crop factor is 1.62, full frame focal lenght equivalent is then 25.9-486mm cdn.photographylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Sensor-Sizes-and-Crop-Factors.png

The change and the transportation of many lenses for travelers is a real problem. I think for travelers who don't do photo processing and have a full frame camera the tamron 16-300 is fantastic. It is the only full frame lens with such a big span of focal lengths. Certainly much better choice than a super zoom bridge camera. 500$ are quite a lot for ordinary photographers. The only problem is that this lens is full frame and a person with a new full frame dSLR or STL camera have at least spend 1500$. So in practice is better to something more expensive and sharp. On other hand for those with a cheaper second hand full frame camera or a much older model the 500$ of tamron 16-300 is a good investment. The choice of a zoom lens for travelers is a challenge because nobody really know what exact focal lengths will be used. Primes are excellent in sharpens and price but foot zoom is rarely available, safe or easy. The true is that zoom lens lets more creative despite its softens.

I've been shooting my kids' outdoor swim meets with my D5200 and 55-300 Nikkor AF-S 4.5-5.6 lens. It's great for closeups of the swimmers from halfway across the pool and I'm getting great detail on the water splashes, but I'm frustrated trying to capture a group of kids requires me to step back about 15 feet. Any thoughts on the 18-300 for this use? Since the Nikkor is already a pretty big zoom range and a pretty slow lens, I'm assuming image quality won't be all that different.
    Thanks,
    Gary

I personally am not a fan of the do-it-all lenses, the lenses that cover 18-200 or more. They are certainly convenient but in my opinion you make sacrifices in image quality and convenience. The 18-140 range is about as high as I think someone should go.- Why not just put on your 18-55 for the group shots. If you want to be lazy sure get the 18-300 but you got a nice camera to take nice photos and I'd keep a wider lens around for group shots.

    • @grubin698
      @grubin698 8 лет назад

Thanks for the response - my thinking was that I could get more candids if I had a wider angle at my disposal. I certainly take your point about the image quality. I have a 28-75 f/2.8 that's perfect for the candids, but too short for the action shots. I guess I just need to try harder to keep it handy.
I'll need to take a look at your reviews to see if you've covered anything that might be a faster replacement for my 55-300. I love it for outdoors, but it's too slow to use indoors.

would you recommend the combination of Nikon D3300+Tamron 16-300mm for a beginner? I'm interested in traveling photography,i mean city shots, historical buildings, architecture, landscapes and also i'm interested in human body and face (kind of paparazzi, model photography). so i searched a lot and came along with this option, of course with this budget.

      I am a beginner as wel and I recently purchased a Nikon D5300 + Tamrom 16-300M lens.
In my not so experienced opinion, this lens is a pretty OK all-rounder. If you want wide shots and alot of zoom, then go with this.
I didn't want to walk with 2 lenses and that was my reason to buy 1 all-rounder.
But this didn't withheld me from buying a Nikkor 50mm 1.8G Prime lens with is way better for portrait photography in comparison to the Tamron.

thanks alot for your reply. i purchased a D3300 with a Tamron 18-270 mm ;)
but maybe as you said i'll also need some original Nikon lenses like a prime one. first i should learn how to get pretty nice photos in manual mode, not too easy. i also purchased a Walimex UV filter and i'm not sure if helps or as it is a cheap filter, it reduces the image quality.

    Hi,
I have read all the information about Tamron 16-300mm, actually I just looking for all around lens, my camera is Canon 70D, the lens I have now is canon 50mm f/1.4, canon 18-200mm F/3.5, and last but not least is Canon 18-135mm F/3.5 IS STM. But I still need another lens who can provide longest tele all around and cheap... your advise is needed... Thank you.

+Mirra Alwin This lens gives pretty good quality at 300mm. But get ready to deal with chromatic aberrations!
Being an owner of this lens, I have to admit that this lens has an excellent focal range. The focusing is little slow, but the AF motor is so silent. Get this if you want a good bang for the bucks. :)

Hi Rohan, after that so long.. unfortunately now I changed my 70D with 80D, then I bought already this Tamron 16-300 mm, with no doubted I combined it both...
Found some problems... I'm not satisfied with Tamron... and still looking what's the main problem is...
Blur, not clear ... and better using MF rather than AF.... after several test with this lens....
Then I call Tamron Service Centre... the answer is ...I should return the Lens to fix it, as because this lens is not compatible with 80D.....
It should firmware for the lens.... Trust me...

    • @rohanclassic
      @rohanclassic 8 лет назад

I got you.. The lens has amazing zooming range from 16mm all the way to 300mm.. But it lacks the quality. I used it for some indoor event photography last week, the lens is very poor performer in low lit conditions.. It feels that the lens is not able to give "Full resolution" of the camera.
I tried to capture an image with this lens and the canon 50mm STM, both at the same settings
      ISO100
      f/5.6
      50mm
And with a tripod, the results were totally different... canon's lens has got tremendous sharpness where the tamron sucks!!!
I dont hate the lens, but yeah I dont love it either! :)

      Hello there...
Thanks for your comment about this lens, at the moment my Tamron 16-300mm lens still at the Tamron Service Centre. They have been checked that the series number this lens already updated and compatible with Canon 80D (my new camera), then will continue to test the close up. Honestly compare with Canon lens18-200mm f/3.5 ... Canon lens still on the TOP range ..., but I'm still curious as because when I googling all the info about this lens + canon 80D, all the comments are it is match lens with 80D... Let see... Thank you
