Marc's Dukat is the one of the greatest villain portrayals of all time
Up until season 5, he was an antihero on the road to redemption. They should have kept him that way instead of doing an about face with his character and making him an evil caricature.
It was Shakespearean in pathos and tragedy. A man who saw himself as a hero totally unaware of how much of a monster was he.
@@April_in_CT I think the portrayal of Damar in his final days was phenomenal, and the redemption of the two characters would be mutually exclusive because no one wants to see two characters do exactly the same thing.
Yep. Such a multi-dimensional character, unlike a boring pure evil villains.
He was my favorite character along with Quark and Garak, UNTIL that Bajoran Antichrist bullshit started.
That's how badass Sisko is. He punches so hard he breaks the 4th wall and punches your actor too.
Man, now I feel bad for both John de Lancie _and_ Q! _No wonder_ he went off to harass Janeway in the Delta Quadrant, instead.
Sisko is badass, the actor playing him is a bit of a nutty fruitfuck lol..no brooks is a great actor, he's just different, sorta how Stewart was in the beginning of next gen.only difference,Patrick loosened up..Avery didn't.
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporated lol so true. You should check out the latest Star Trek run of comics. Sisko returns from the wormhole a few years later and Q pops in. There’s a hilarious scene of Sisko punching him right in the face and being like “I Thought You Learned Your Lesson The First Time. I Didn’t Think I’d Get To Teach It To You Again!” Lol. The art is so good too.
I love Ben Sisko!

How is be breaking the 4th wall. He’s not talking to the camera speaking to the audience
Avery: "Dammit."
Director: "Oh Lord!"
Marc: "My face..."
Avery: "Help! Help!"
Sorry, Avery, but that little "Help! Help!" makes the entire scene.
😂
I believe he said "God dammit."
I thibk avery said "God dammit!"

Marc's voice may be a bit rough now, but I think he would play an outstanding mafia boss.
Yes! He's still got lots to give to any role he gets.
Lol, that's basically all he did in the seventies. I think he appeared on Kojak twice, both times as criminals.
@@susanmurren-azad8787 Also he was one of the two mob bosses in Tango and Cash!
He does give me Al Pacino vibes!

It's unfortunate there isn't more of an in-depth interview with Marc Alaimo in the doc itself. He was such an integral part of the show that it would have been bland and colorless without him. Behr didn't seem to give him the credit he deserved, even in this documentary. Perhaps someday, people beyond his small, but loyal fanbase will recognize his greatness and give him the credit he truly deserves.
"A true victory is to make your enemy see that they were wrong to oppose you in the first place; to force them to acknowledge your greatness."
Daria Wells i’m guessing you are a part of that small loyal fan base. Do you know if Marc has any social media pages like anywhere?
Behr wanted a straight Nazi allegory. He HATED how popular Dukat was with the fanbase. Poor Marc bore the brunt of that. It's similar to Whedon jumping all over Marsters when the Buffy fans fell in love with Spike. I'll say it again: if you want a two dimensional villain, don't hire a great actor.
When I met Marc, he didn't even have email (though that was 20 years ago), so I'm guessing any sites will be fan run.

Honestly I wouldn’t have complained if this actually made the cut in DS9. The Sisko just decks Dukat and then the show ends lol.
It did.
"Don't F with The Sisko!"
Greatest Star Trek villain ever!
Because Garak is a hero.
He's definitely up there. The problem is that they keep trying to replicate Khan. So there isn't any opportunity for villains to shine. Seska was written out. ENT had no overarching villain to speak of. Commodore Oh is just sorta there; I couldn't tell you one thing about her attitude or motivations.

Dukat's voice sounds raspy. Oh right, he was sealed away with the Pah-Wraiths in the fire caves.
Punched him so hard his Romulan counterpart felt it.
or his doppelganger Gul Macet.
Dukat is on the level of Villians that makes the show or series work and keeps you coming back, great actor.
Great actor Mark Alaimo. So underated. I absaloutly loved him as Gul Dukat. DS9 was filled with wonderful actors. I always remember when Dukat and Kira were on a mission together whare they found zihal, Dukat's daughter in a breen labour camp. The part whare kira and Dukat are in the caves resting and Dukat gets a big splinter in his backside. They both end up laughing there heads off as Dukat is jumping around trying to get it out. I always thought part of that was real laughter and it was kept in the final take. Brilliant.
Nana Visitor I have heard her laugh out of character.
It's pretty much exactly the same as you hear her in the show.
Pretty cool. Her laugh is so cute too.
That's when Dukat's character was amazing. Then the head writer went and ruined his character.
in what way is her underrated? everyone i have ever spoken to about him thinks he is fantastic
He's really not underrated. I don't think people know what that word means any more.
@@TammoKorsai Nowadays "underrated" is misused to mean "someone I like and want to see more often even if they have a good career going." Although I acknowledge that Alaimo hasn't been on screen much in the last 25 years which is a shame.

@@tool46296 Both Aron Eisenberg (Nog) and Rene Auberjonois (Odo) died in 2019...they died like a month separated from each other :(
Sad to hear his voice is messed up (maybe from smoking?). He had such a smooth voice, and it was always funny how so many characters in DS9 would reference how much Dukat loved to hear himself speak. Duh, it's cause he had an awesome voice!
Dude is in his mid 70's, give him a break
@@MedalionDS9 Tress MacNeille isn't much younger, but she's still doing Dot.
We all get old. I've never smoked a day in my life, but at 50 my voice is a little rougher nonetheless.
@@burkesongs even if he didn’t smoke regularly, he was one of the only actors in Trek to actually smoke the prop cigarettes in “Far Beyond the Stars”, everyone else takes a tiny tiny sip and then just fiddles with them. So he at least knew how to smoke and he didn’t object to inhaling non-nicotine smoke for all those takes.
Actors of his era (I'm guessing character actors especially) may also not have been properly taking care of their voices with like rest and tea and stuff because information on that was probably not widely accessible. He spent a lot of time putting on a voice as Dukat that is very different than his natural speaking voice, that messes a lot of VA's up.
My dad plays dominoes with marc every day he is a great guy
That's awesome! Have you met Marc? How is he doing these days? If you can, please tell him his fans love him and I'm sure we all hope he is doing well. He seems like such a nice guy, as well as a terrific actor. Such a strong and memorable presence in the Star Trek canon.
You're a liar.
I met him at a convention 20 years ago. He hung out drinking with me and two of my friends pretty much all evening. There was absolutely no way that Casey Biggs or Jeffrey Combs were going to do that. He made our convention experience special. He's a very nice man. Is he still into motorcycles? Give him (non-stalkery) love from Las Vegas.
I mean, William Shatner is a good friend of mine. We play correspondence chess weekly.
I’m good friends with the ghost of Leonard Nimoy. We commune every Sunday.
0:03 That, that right there? That's Dukat.
Yep, I saw that look and immediately knew that Marc still “has it”. Dukat is who he is because of Marc’s performance bringing the character to life, to the point where Ira Stephen Behr loved his performance so much that he decided to make him the central antagonist of the series.
Marc your voice may have changed but with it, you can now play new kinds of roles.
I hope to see you acting more. *sending big hugs*
Marc Alaimo deserved way more screentime for how amazing all of his performances were in the show.
Marc's voice is gone :(
Sad but he's old and sometimes life his hard on the vocal chords.
Possibly a chain smoker? Same thing happened to Al Pacino 40 years ago.
It's different, life changes all of us. I'm grateful he's still with us.
You can feel his presences on screen thou, even more.
This was filmed in fall of 2019, otherwise known as "Allergies From Hell" season. If Marc is anything like me, the constant dripping down the sinuses and in the back of my throat makes me sound like a desperately heavy Benedryl consumer who buys cigs by the case.
Loved this! Huge Marc Alaimo fan and I have never seen this, thanks!
One of the best villains in tv history
Gul Dukat is one of the greatest villains ever written, certainly in the top three of all of Star Trek I'd say, Marc's performance was fantastic. I always love spotting him in other movies like Total Recall, this guy deserves way more credit and awards
Marc Alaimo! Great actor! Any decent actor can play a good guy everyone loves. But only the best actors can play a bad guy that you really despise! I actually loved Gul Dukat so I'm really not the one to back up this idea.
This is what happens when racist sexist homophobe piece of shit Rick Berman was not in charge
.who ever let a moron with no experience and only ran one shitty kids show very poorly for like a few weeks take over star trek?
@ Rick Berman was a producer throughout the “TNG era”. Prior to Paramount hiring him for Trek he’d only produced a children’s show. Additionally, many people blame him for some of the treatment of women on the set, and for slightly regressive attitudes in writing in that era. For instance Denise Crosby partially blames Berman for her wanting to leave so early. (If you fancy watching some videos about it, Jessie Gender did a video about the treatment of women in Trek a year or two ago; and there’s also a video called “Berman Trek” by Renegade Cut.)
Underrated actor
It just goes to show how hit or miss Hollywood can be. You have some people that can't act for nothing becoming superstars. And then you have absolutely fantastic actors like Marc that fall to the wayside. It's a crime.
Marc Ailamo: Patrick Stewart never hit me.
Avery Brooks: I'm not Patrick Stewart.
for a moment Avery Brooks got the character of Commander Sisko confused with Hawk.
Which was the producers' concern from the beginning.
Hahahhaha... What a story mark..
Avery: It's not true! I Did not hit him! I did not! Oh...hi Marc.
Marc: Hey Avery, what's up?
Avery: It's you! You said I hit you!
Marc: You DID hit me. Everyone saw it.
Avery: Ha! Taking you own side as usual. No wonder you made such a great Cardassian.
Wow, his voice is shot. The prophets have spoken!
He was trapped in the fire caves with the Pah-Wraiths. All that fire can't be good for one's health.
That's what happens when you have Geddy Lee set up your fight scenes.
0:03 he even kinda gave off Dukat vibes right there when he pointed his finger.
One of the finest actors Ive seen. I can count on one hand the number of actors who've been able to pull of a "villain" that also in certain episodes elicits empathy and sadness for the character. Not easy to do, the writing has to be good, but the acting, for it to be believable across the arc of the character, well that has to be impeccable.
The other notable mention in that regard though not trek related, is Zod from Man of Steel. I forget the actors name, but he too was masterful in that way in that role.
Conversely, Louise Fletcher was able to perfectly portray that coniving evil as Kai Winn
I remember seeing Marc’s face without the makeup in the episode beyond the stars and I remember thinking “wow, the makeup actually makes him look younger”
Dukat: My face. My beautiful face!
Two friends and I hung out drinking with Marc into the early hours of the morning at a convention 20 years ago before Creation took over all things Con (and yes, that's a pun). Met him in the hotel bar. Back then, Trek fans were NOT drinkers, which gave my friends and I an easy in, since most of the actors were. Anyway, he's a really nice guy: optimist and Harley enthusiast (we did NOT talk about trek; I don't think he'd have stayed if we had).
The documentary did him a real disservice. Clearly Ira Behr never forgave him for making his bad guy so damned charismatic and popular with the fans. (Ira, if you want a flat, two-dimensional villain, don't hire a great actor!!)
nothing disappointed me more than when Dukat went back to being Dukat. He had a really good redemption arc happening until his daughter was killed and that made him lose his mind.
Blame Dahmar!
Avery Brooks' shocked 'Dammit!' shows he was genuinely shocked and embarrassed to really hit him.
That “But He’s wrong…” was soooooooooo Dukat
I hope the have this legends energy when im his age what an amazing actor
I love this man ❤️
That rich buttery voice is gone...
Yeah, unfortunately. He had one of the best villain voices ever.
Yes, but I like his new voice equally. It's different and I'm sure he can wield it in a new way to his acting advantage if he still wants to pursue it. He's nearing 80 now. Thirty-some odd years will change anyone's voice. I'm not sure what happened to him during that time but many of us are grateful he and many others of the cast are still with us.
It came back briefly when he said “but it’s wrong” at the start.
"Wham! Right on the side! Right here."
*gets hit on the opposite side*
He hit him so hard he forgot what side he got hit on.
Greetings earthlings… the year: 2023. it has taken me these decades to realize the brilliance of that unmistakable voice and the man behind the face. As I re-watch DS9 after all this time I’ve been [edit: I mean “begun”] to realize the immense talent pool. I think the world is starting to catch on. I hope there are still some kind of royalties in this streaming age that bring new rewards to the stable of talent, equal to the praise, they deserve, and are now getting.
You do have to wonder how they played their roles when the scenes were very physical in nature. Tons of bloopers, I bet!
Sisko: "Oh, so you're like Q now?" *starts throwing bombs*
Marc Alaimo was great in DS9
Why does this video end with Dax? Cool story from Mark, though.
It says in title Dax test. It was testing different looks including a variant of the Trill look from an earlier episode of TNG.

Best TV Villain of all time.
I don’t know why but maybe because of Marc’s performance I could never bring myself to hate Dukat
That's because in the first four seasons he was written to be an antihero on the road to redemption. But when the head writer saw in the online chat rooms all the love that was being praised on him, the head writer didn't like that. So he changed the character to be an evil joke instead. But by that time we were already all enamored with him so we couldn't hate him if we tried. I thought that was really messed up what they did to his character and his storyline.
What a story Marc.

2 odd things here. The camera was shooting over MA’s shoulder, not in front of him. Also, he says he told Avery -it’s okay to hit him. He says, “Hit me. It’s okay.” It all doesn’t make sense.
He wanted him to hit him to make it real. But neither thought that it was going to connect that hard.

I never really understood all the religion and the end of Dukat's and Sisko's storylines, but as I grew older and rewatched it a few more times... I now completely understand, and that elevates this show to beyond a 10/10. Waltz is one of my favorite episodes too, Mr. Alaimo did a fantastic job
@Samar3n I’ve almost finished DS9 but the way I see it, Dukat hasn’t changed and what better way for him to get control of Bajor or destroy it is by servicing essentially the false gods of the Bajorans, start a cult and using that to bring Bajorans under his authority.
He even admits his hatred of the Bajorans to Sisko in Waltz. I’d say that is pretty consistent with how Dukat was introduced and later on, that he is a charismatic and narcissistic tyrant.

Bill Mumy has a youtube clip which goes into that story.
And they also could have left out that dumb pow wow of the writers coming up with stupid stories for a non-existent eighth season. And even more so, drop the reviews from people that weren't even born back when the show was on.

No spots on Dax?
The original Trills didn't have spots, they changed the look for Terry after Paramount executives watched the dailies of Terry Farrell in DS9 pilot "Emissary", they issued a rare ultimatum about the Trill make-up scheme. The executives insisted the make-up be changed via removal of the forehead markings; having spent a long time seeking a beautiful actress for the role of Dax, Paramount wanted to avoid Farrell being defaced by prosthetics.
They tried to use a 2nd set of eyebrows but was rejected by the audience
Terry Farrell was allergic to the prosthetics, which is also the reason that Dax never took part in the undercover mission in 'Apocalypse rising'

Interesting. I always thought it was weird that Dax had a different design than the Trill that appeared in TNG. They looked like she did here.
Not the purpose of this video, so I'm not sure how this came up, but..they test-screened her with the TNG Trill makeup and it just didn't look great for so many reasons. Rubber prosthetic alien-of-the-week doesn't always make for a good main castmember. So they went with Famke Janssen's Kriosian spots instead. I think it was a good call.
