I went to an old convention in Tulsa they sadly don't hold anymore. But Averey Brooks was there. As I was standing in line for a photo with him as they were getting set up he actually came out. Saying hi to everyone shaking their hands including mine. Asked my name, I told him it and that it was an honor to meet him, countering with the honor is his. That moment will forever stay in my mind. He's a very unique individual.

This person, Avery Brooks, was the only person who could have followed Patrick Stewart as the senior officer to lead a new show. Just listening to him speak, the way he holds himself, the words and thoughts he conveys. His thoughts and ideals go beyond himself and the way he speaks of the show goes beyond just the show.

Blame the networks for that. DS9 got horrible marketing out of the gate, and it wasn't clearly articulated that it was a pretty drastic spinoff for trekkies to get invested. Also serialized TV was pretty uncommon still outside soap operas, so it was hard for newcomers to watch.
Long and short: ds9 would have faired much better in today's streaming age. It was ahead of its time.

    • @kazekage321414
      @kazekage321414 6 месяцев назад

@@jonathanpusar5931 Like many things and people that are too far ahead of their time, it suffered from obscurity in its era, but is increasingly appreciated. From it's themes and morals to it's genre and style, DS9 was a show made for the 2000's and 2010's coming out in the 1990s. I can understand why Americans wouldn't really appreciate a grim and gritty vision of the future right after they had just won the Cold War. In 1993, terrorism and occupation wouldn't be at the forefront of the American mind, but we all know that would change a decade later.

I got a chance to see Avery Brooks at a convention in Pasadena, CA in 1997. It was the first time they had all four captains on the stage at the same time. Shatner, Stewart, Brooks and Mulgrew. (Scott Bakula wasn’t a captain yet.) Then Cirroc Lofton made a surprise appearance. The crowd was going totally insane. I still have the pictures and I’ll never forget that day.

Avery Brooks is an elegant, deep thinking, race man of the people. His powerful spirit comes through his smooth voice. I’ve watched the series several times. I take comfort in his portrayal of a strong, loving, moral leader un- bought & un-bossed.

Ben panics but I think he accepts what Jake had done and he kisses his head and calls him his sweet boy. As a father myself the love and bond between a parent and and their child is the strongest feeling I've ever felt, this episode really touched me, a sad but great scene.

In contrast to Patrick Stewart, Shatner, Frakes and Mulgrew, I feel like Brooks carries a lot of humility with him as a professional. I've never seen him push his pride.
Even in what is no doubt one of his proudest moments, he is still privileged to have had the opportunity and in that, he puts his humility forward to the viewers as well.
He's not ramming anything down anyone's throat. He's just showing the way it is.
Sisko faced his demons head on and acknowledged the shadows of his past, which is an allegory for humanity.
We all have a piece of ourselves tied in to the savagery of past times.
But in Brooks's vision, it's something we need to move past, not hold on to.

A lot of wisdom in that man. Dynamic actor. I don’t think it was written how much he personally evolved his character and that’s what made the difference in ds9. I’ve watched the season several times and each time I catch some new look at something or a small comment or movement in the background in a scene. He was great, made the the space station feel like a real environment that you could see yourself and your family live on. Impressive work sir and thank you for your obvious kindness towards your fellow man.

Favorite Captain for me, the character development in DS9 was legit. The first episode saw Sisko walking through a dirty abandoned space station and as the series went on life came about the station for sure. The episode on which he played the writer was well played. The emotion when his story got scraped was unreal. Love his contribution to the ST world!

I enjoy listening to Avery Brooks so much. He is so insightful and we'll spoken. He has a beautiful singing voice.
He seems to be the person who would make a wonderful friend - supportive but willing to call you out if need be.

I read somewhere that Avery Brooks was kind of a crazy man. He seems very sensible here. I guess you can’t believe everything you read... about Star Trek at least.

Check out some of his convention appearances, and especially the one-on-one interview he does at his piano with Shatner.
It's like he has Become Benny Russell ! He just has this intensity that is almost hard to bear.

Ian he is crazy off camera he's been arrested a few times for drunken driving. But I so love this man as Hawk on Speaker for hire, and a man called Hawk in the late 80s is when I first came in contact with him. If you haven't seen his bio you should read it, it's awesome

Sisko is by far the most relatable leadership role in all of Star Trek. He is a successful/Loving father, a friend who will bend the rules but not break the rules for you, Stern but fair to his enemies, a great mediator for any argument, and a man who wasn’t corrupted by religious empowerment. Also a man that could drop the god damn hammer when needed!! Sure quieted the Marquis pretty fast with those quantum torpedos when they leveraged the federation too much. A man that gets the job done! If I had to follow a man through Peace or war Sisko would have my vote. Kirk for exploration, Picard as an ideal, Sisko for Life!!

I LOVE that DS9, TNG and Voyager all got 7 seasons. It hurts that Enterprise only got 4. It especially hurts since ENT was my favourite series. But VOY was also my favourite series. But DS9 was also my favourite. So was TNG... OK, so I don't have a favourite series and I love each one equally. Even Discovery is getting up there, now that season 2 has made it watchable...

Our Eyes Met and he smiled at Me..( During his performance.. I was in the third row middle seat).. Listening to him do Shakespeare... He brings Swag. Class and Sexy to The Roles he plays.. I miss him.. 💜🤗👊✌

Good interview. A very philosophical and deep-thinking guy.
Which makes some of the personal appearances I have viewed very disconcerting, where he is practically laying on the table, and the interview with Shatner where his answers are riffs on his piano. Just very odd behavior.

He's really into his music and has been using music to communicate his thoughts and feelings for so long now. That's probably why words fail him sometimes and why it's easier for him to express through music.
He's also an old man now, so he's entitled to a few brain farts.

Shatner asked him "What do you think is after death?"
And Brooks responded by playing the piano. But be didn't play any old piece, he played "I Wish I Knew".
So he was answering the question. Just in a different way.

Some believe Avery might be a little crazy. I think that is an illusion. He is very intelligent and creative (both hemispheres of his brain firing with all cylinders). That might make it seem like he is crazy to an outsider with limited capacity of thought. I believe his mind is fighting itself to find an answer to very complex questions while listening to different ideas in his mind to achieve the best answer. That's not easy for anyone to do. Avery is a very special person. He thinks on higher levels than the average joe. I love the characters he has played, but I love him much more as a human being. A true role model for all.

Was 1953 chosen because that was the year of initial print of the "Judgement Day" comic by EC? You know, the one dealing with a black man traveling the stars to a planet full of bigoted robots? A comic that some people tried to ban/censor just a few years later when it was scheduled for a reprint?

I never particularly want to meet any actors or "celebrities", indeed usually i think most actors seem pretty shallow and uninteresting despite their characters and abilities in portraying those characters, but Avery Brooks is the exception. I would like to meet him, he seems such an interesting person.
