As featured on the CD-Rom "The Defiant: A Virtual Tour" by Simon & Shuster. Not much could be done to improve the image quality, but I have smoothed the audio as best I can.
In the times were are in, here is one of the greatest black actors of my generation talking casually about subconscious racism from 22 years ago, "all blacks look the same" And saying he took the role not just for money, not just for career, but out of a sense of duty, to give a hopeful vision of the future to the children that would be tomorrows adults, that sadly modern startrek post 2009 has abandoned.
It's amazing how he talks about wanting to give hope to children who have already given up on the idea that there will be a world for them to inherit in the future. This was in 1998, and that fear feels stronger than ever in 2022.
Thanks for uploading this gem of an interview. Avery Brooks is definitely a gem of an individual. So incredibly thoughtful, centered, and present in every single interview I've seen of the guy. He's pure jazz in motion.
Avery Brooks is a very intelligent intellectual man. His acting in Spenser for hire 😘😘😘 amazing💕😍 I have all the Spenser for Hire DVD's love watching Hawk and his ways impeccable.
Wow I wish I was old enough to absorb this man’s knowledge while he was in his prime. Well spoken and insightful human being. Captain sisqo salute to you my brother 👏🏽
I remember at first thinking he was a wooden actor, but then you realize he just has that cadence to his speech. He's great, and a bit of scenery chewing is basically a must for a Starfleet captain.
I was the same, when I first saw Brooks in DS9 in the early 90s I assumed he didn't have much to offer beyond the stiff, wooden approach... Like he was some Shakespearean android. But Sisko only grew more and more dynamic as the series went on. I grew to love his mannerisms. Very charismatic, and very warm. He's now my favorite Trek captain alongside Picard.
I just finished the deep space 9 series marathon on Amazon prime and I really loved it maybe even more than the next generation. Halfway through the series I couldn't believe that I was starting to like it and at the end I felt wow this is amazing it's so much better than next generation.
Sisko was the best captain! A soldier, emissary, mentor, and captain... such an amazing character. I feel a little bad that he didn't think it was a serious role when his agent brought it to him. I still watch DS9 today, I love it.
The best captain of the best crew of the best show of the franchise. The dude is so. . . deep that he comes off as kind of odd and quirky at personal appearances.
Such a beautiful voice! Hawk an excellent examples of course honor respect lacking even as opposite of The law his respect for Spencer as a friend was a breath of fresh fresh air in The land of TV land!
If I didn't already know then watching Captain Sisco selling his soul, piece by piece, to bring the Romulans into the fight for the Alpha Quadrant, would've convinced me what a talented actor Mr. Brooks truly is.
I love how Avery speaks hes, so profound the way hes humble about himself but knows how his position in trek affects people of color and all people... hes so kool
Spenser for hire was my favorite show. I still remember one of Hawks lines, "Looking for the jumbo my friend, gotta rock & roll." These actors today can't compare.!
Dr. King would be Proud. The scene on the bridge of the enterprise where Lt. Uhura stares at the young Benjamin Sisko is so golden. In the 1960's Dr. Martin Luther King jr. told her in a personal message to her not leave the Star Trek series. That It was symbolic of that which is bigger to us as a people than ones own personal discomforts. Thank you Nishan Nichols for heeding the man of God. Thank God for you Avery Brooks for displaying on screen a Man of extraordinary character. Even so as Dr. Martin Luther King jr. relentlessly demonstrated in his short time here on earth.
Avery, could you elaborate on the linguistics and phonology conceived behind Captain Sisko? He's so poetic and passionate... Almost like he's a theatre actor in a Shakespearean play
Always a very extrodinary actor on stage and film will always be my favorite its sad he does not get the credit he deserves but Mr Brooks we know how great you are and THANK YOU FOR MAKING US BELIVE YOU ARE THE CHARACTERS YOU PLAY
Love him as Hawk and admired him as Captain Sisko. My least favorite episode was the one where the writers had Sisko mentally ill, and him being a captain at a Space Station was only in his mind.
Watching Deep Space Nine especially during my adolescence honestly was an affirmative positive force. And I agree, more brown children should watch the show as an inspiration and guide.
"... or have decided that the world is not interested in them at all and therefor start to plan their funerals, rather than thinking that there's going to be a world to inherit" Powerful words that touched my heart -.-
In the pale moonlight is a fantastic episode and far beyond the stars. I’d also like to point out that Avery is a fantastic director, we got to see that in DS9 also.
That's amazing. I had no idea he signs baseballs! The sport holds no real interest to me but damn did the baseball make an absolutely legendary symbol on the show. If I could own one prop, the baseball would probably be it.
he showed what a star fleet captain is supposed to be like a real person I just wish by the end of the show they had made him at least a commodore so he could command a ship or stay on ds9
Thought he was great in Spenser For Hire. We used to get that in the UK here. What a voice and fantastic range of vocabulary this man has. He would be fantastic at voiceovers in the UK.
🎉 Dear Avery. 🎉 I send you many happy returns to your birthday. I wish you much health, gladness and happiness for your New year of life. 🎉 Unfortunately my Mail to you returned last year. I was sad about it, because YOU were my reason for translating my biography in English. I'll try to send it to you once again. 🎉 Have a nice day. 🎉 Best wishes, Jana
The relationship between him and Jake was so meaningful for to me. Such a pleasure to see a great relationship between a father and son.
Yes! He loved his son and it was amazing to see. Was really sad about the ending.
Avery is a true artist activist who uses his talents to uplift and portray our humanity . He is a Renassaince Man.......
The father-son relationship in DS9 was always ome of its strongest points. The real bond between Avery and Cirroc comes through beautifully on screen.
Happy 71st birthday, Avery Brooks!

I find this guy, his voice, his acting method completely captivating. My world just sloped away when I was listening to this.
I could listen to him just reading the phonebook!
Avery Brooks is a very intelligent intellectual man.
His acting in Spenser for hire
😘😘😘 amazing💕😍
I have all the Spenser for Hire DVD's love watching Hawk and his ways impeccable.

I always found his presence demolished the scenery ;o) He can pull of a monologue that leaves you fixated. Ending of In the pale moonlight
Not a DS9 guy but watch him in Spenser for Hire. He's incredible in the role and he and Urich were a phenomenal team.
He’s not the norm. So people get bugged up in that at first. Once you really watch him go. He’s a star firing on all cylinders.
We miss you and love you!
Gosh what an absolutely amazing person.
Avery brooks is MY hero! He’s got a singular and accurate way of seeing things, and a philosophy that makes sense.
We need Avery Brooks in 2020
We need him every year
I was a child that watched and was inspired by him and his portrayal of Sisko
Thank you Avery. Your role meant the world to me
It's Hawk! He will always be HAWK for me.....such a great voice.
I had no idea he was a professor. That in and of itself is an outstanding achievement. This guy’s going places!
The great Avery Brooks.
He was off the chain as the character called Hawk, he should have been offered his own show. What a voice. Watching in 2020
He DID have his own show: " A Man Called Hawk."
I just finished the deep space 9 series marathon on Amazon prime and I really loved it maybe even more than the next generation. Halfway through the series I couldn't believe that I was starting to like it and at the end I felt wow this is amazing it's so much better than next generation.
That was actually quite beautiful.
He is so intelligent and what a fantastic actor. Loved him in Spenser for Hire, his relationship with Robet Urich was TV screen magic
I'm so glad you made it brother. You have a loving and stoic nature.
Very nice to see Avery and hear his comments .Thankyou very much 😊

Sisko was the best captain! A soldier, emissary, mentor, and captain... such an amazing character. I feel a little bad that he didn't think it was a serious role when his agent brought it to him. I still watch DS9 today, I love it.
Thee absolute coolest!!! The way this man speaks is poetry. Finger snap, finger snap, finger snap. Jazz baby!
The best captain of the best crew of the best show of the franchise.
The dude is so. . . deep that he comes off as kind of odd and quirky at personal appearances.
Avery Brooks is authentic and I enjoy all of his qualities, deep reflections and all. I recently learned taught as a professor, so explains lots.

Maybe too many years late but , thank you! especially for Hawk!
my favorite captain
If I didn't already know then watching Captain Sisco selling his soul, piece by piece, to bring the Romulans into the fight for the Alpha Quadrant, would've convinced me what a talented actor Mr. Brooks truly is.
Such an interesting man; so articulate - love hearing his thoughts on acting, Trek and the world in general. Thanks for uploading.
I love how Avery speaks hes, so profound the way hes humble about himself but knows how his position in trek affects people of color and all people... hes so kool
I love you Avery, the best Captain ever.
I wish Avery would write books. Such a beautiful and thoughtful way of articulating his thoughts.
The best commander / captain. Awesome character in Hawk.
I love Avery Brooks!!!
Spenser for hire was my favorite show.
I still remember one of Hawks lines,
"Looking for the jumbo my friend, gotta rock & roll." These actors today can't compare.!
I can't imagine being taught to act from him! His students are so lucky!
Dr. King would be Proud.

He should do audio books with this voice.
In the pale moonlight is a fantastic episode and far beyond the stars.
I’d also like to point out that Avery is a fantastic director, we got to see that in DS9 also.
No other captain is a fucking god.
I love him so much.
I have a signed baseball of his.
That's amazing. I had no idea he signs baseballs! The sport holds no real interest to me but damn did the baseball make an absolutely legendary symbol on the show. If I could own one prop, the baseball would probably be it.

I loved HAWK on Spencer for Hire….he’s a good actor. He’s very versatile…speaks so well too with that DJ voice.
Hi Capt. Benjamin Sisko. Met you in London 2012.
Hope you are well. LLAP.🖖
This same video was included in the Star Trek: Captain's Chair CD-ROM.
I didn't think I could love him more. I was wrong
I feel having followed him from Spencer For Hire. He has been underappreciated in Hollywood since Deep Space 9
Loved him narrating Roots by Alex Haley
Deep space nine, excellent show!!
This is so deep....
Say Avery, they should have developed a phaser that’s had a 6 inch barrel, then you would have some of Hawk in the Sisko character.
Best Captain in Star Trek.
I LIKE YOU VERY MUCH, AVERY. I LIKE YOUR ACTING AND ALSO YOUR SINGING VERY MUCH. 😂❤😂
Please do an interview.
Hawk,, you are sooo attractive, your voice is so appealing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I'm still Watching Spencer for hire on Roku
