“Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any set of compassion, between supposed lovers!” Great line and definitely hits close to home. If you’re out of Joe Rogan interviews check out that Berkeley with Justin and Danny. Telling you that 3:12 mark is something special.
That is pure poetry! Will check that interview out. Thanks!
If you're watching interviews w/Tool (band members) - RUclips Rick Beato (but his interviews lean hard on music and creative process and equipment), but still interesting.
Just started that one!
@@SaeedReacts. forgot to say - i have played guitar and bass on and off for 40 years. My dream job would be sitting in a studio adjusting levels, mics, effects, loops, etc (i used to also DJ in night clubs - more like MC that chose music, not beat ox & scratching) - so music production is my "nerd porn" fascination along with music and music creation (or audio creation). Therefore, my high regard for things like Beati's interviews is likely skewed through a different lens than most would view (unless they are music nerd level closer to me). If you JUST enjoy the music, I am there. I like to see how it's put together. Part of the reason I am so HUGE on TOOL is their music production seems almost flawless - likely "perfection". Doesn't hurt that i spiritually groove on their themes and topics. Why do I feel like I am writing a college thesis (having never really attended uni)?
Also, this song won the 2002 Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
This was 2001 I think…. So already 8 years after undertow. You can real see and feel the progression of the band by now. My son started playing bass about 5 months ago and learned this and 46 and 2 first… lol he jumped right in the deep end.😂..
Also fun note Mike Tyson is training for his fight with Jake Paul at Maynard’s jujitsu gym in Arizona!!!
Dont know why i had 1996 in my head 😅. Thats awesome your son is starting to play and jumping straight in the deep end is the way to go 😄.
Lets gooo Mike! 💪💪
Ah, my first TOOL love! Great song! Now that you've heard it, be sure to go back and watch the official music video. It's f***ing trip! LOL
Now im interested 😄
If you are going down the Tool rabbit hole, check out the rare interview with the whole band, May 2001 Penthouse, the same month that this album came out, it's a great interview and very informative.
Thanks! Will check it out! Need my TOOL interview fix 😅
this song is so good it's ridiculous
Always love their music for sure!
Have you watched the "Art of Work" short films? I believe there are 3 parts. REALLY cool and personal look into Maynard. Mostly about the vineyards, but also touches on his artistic endeavors and his martial arts stuff too. Also, the documentary film "Blood into Wine" is a great watch about his vineyards/winemaking. His interview with Rick Beato is the best interview I've ever seen him give. He was so relaxed and open with Rick.
I have not seen those, will check them out. Just started the interview with Rick Beato
Maynards specialty is writing music that can be looked upon from different angles
Ugh, love this song.
It's fun to watch the reactions you've done to Tool so far . All the "actual" songs on every album are awesome and different and never get old to hear again. Tell me I'm wrong! haha
I am enjoying discovering them for the first time. Thanks for joining me!
@scottmayo7545 What Mantra isn’t in your top 10? 😂 jk I get what you mean lol
Important to remember conflict in itself is not good or bad. It is HOW you resolve the conflict that either brings you closer or tears you apart. There can even be a beauty in the friction between two people. As long as you keep compassion through out.
Spotlight on these lyrics:
"The poetry that comes from
The squaring off between
And the circling is worth it,
Finding beauty in the dissonance" 💫
Thanks for that insight! 🙏🏽❤️
Also, read his book A Perfect Union of Contrary Things. It provides another layer of context.
He has a book? Thanks for letting me know.
Yep!@@SaeedReacts.
Just a tip "Culling voices" will be your fav Tool song if you react it I bet! :)
Will check it out. Have a reaction to Prison Sex coming tomorrow
Great reaction 🌀👁🌀
Thanks, Mike! 🙏🏽
🤘🏻🌀
🤘
Maynard is writing primarily about communication between his fellow band members and himself, but he does like ambiguity. Hence:
“Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers”
Amazing writing.
Maynard is a BJJ black belt, no joke!
He does a lot!
Thanks man for sticking with Tool!!!
You can “redeem yourself” by reacting to another no stop tradition…
Disposition>Reflection>Triad
Honestly if you paused it just to make the bullies mad I’d lol
That thought had actually crossed my mind 😅😂
@@SaeedReacts. the pausing or doing another Tool double track/triple track. Thats really it. There’s Wings for Marie Pt. 1 & 2 which is an ode to Maynard’s mother. Parabol and Parabola. Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned (rhythm madness). That’s about it. Every tool album has interludes that are distracting at best and not necessary at worst. It’s more theatre than music.
Once again, thanks for turning back and following up with Tool. Although some things were written for specific reasons, the great thing about their music is its mythological and points to truths that touches us where we are at and can speak on the current events. Maynard is shady that way. He meant for things to be widely interpreted.
Yeah, “squaring the circle” --> boxing/fighting is interesting. I’ve read it was band vs. band vs. label fighting back then. All of Lateralus is introspective, but universal. So cool.
I honed in on “Finding beauty in the dissonance.” From history class we learned Roman architects and landscape artists varying distances between columns or trees a little bit because when spaces are exactly the same it's aesthetically less appealing. Spiral out😁
Big reco No Quarter, Led Zep then No Quarter, Tool back-to-back. The homage to the original left me speechless. Totally drained. Or release as two videos, but listen to Zep first.
Thanks for sharing that and also the recommendations. Definitely want to listen to some Led Zeppelin.
Are you planning on getting into Salival? I cant wait for both versions of Pushit.
This song wasnt on my list yet. Is there a version that i should do first?
@@SaeedReacts. Each person has their preference. I would say do the album audio first, then the live Salival version. Possibly in one video? They're both the same, yet very very different.
@@SaeedReacts. Also, on Salival, there's a Led Zeppelin cover (No Quarter) and a cover of a song (You Lied) that was Justin Chancellor's prior band, Peach, that I'd love to see you enjoy!
To hear probably the best podcast with Maynard, you gotta hear him on WTF with Marc Maron. Also interviews with Zane Lowe °(probably the greatest music interviewer of his generation) and more recently Rick Beato. I love Rogan, but he can't really talk about music.
Just started the Rick Beato interview. Will also check out the others. Awesome! Thanks.

Nice point of view here, I always thought this song had a strong political 'undertow'. Anyhow, thanks for this one, later buddy🤘
Thanks! Their music has so many layers. Love it!
