He knows what like the blisters and the decks are worth, but as sealed bricks there is a premium, and it is impossible to say how high that is since there are none on the market.
This is very nostalgic for me, in 1999 I was about 8 years old and I saw a giant Magic Starter kit at Walmart with that big ogre on it. It had 2 starter decks, play mats, a goofy VHS that showed you how to play, dice and a jumbo Thorn Elemental card. I think it all still might be in my parents attic. It certainly worked on getting me into Magic for the first time back then.
I remember that commercial that ogre dude broke thru walls of house the kids were playing cards in I knew magic was a thing in 99 but I was falling in love with pokemon as kid didn't have much money so I picked pokemon instead of multiple card games 2 collect. But commercials looked really cool I jus liked pokemon more. Also hope u still have ur stuff from back then I either lost or sold all my childhood stuff like a idiot lol
In 99 I got my first deck and starter game at wizards of the coast store in my local mall. They had a big ogre statue in remember. Good times, miss it.
Let me tell you the value of the brick starter deck. Not a single product in modern day magic can teach you the game like that box does. That single box made me a player for 25 years. You can even play a mock game that helps you understand the intricacies of the game. If someone were to ask me why I don’t play anymore. I would sit them down with that brick and show them how the game used to play. No super heroes, no multi paragraph rules text on the cards. No commander products, or mythic rarity. You were the Planeswalker. Damn shame what happened to the game IMO. Anyway I’m done yelling at the clouds today.
I won a box of starter as a prize in a sealed deck tournament in 2000. The shop was gonna give me 4 packs of whatever or a box of starter. They couldn't sell the starter packs because in Type 2 (Standard at the time) none of the cards were legal. This later changed. I ended up selling the Grim Tutor I got from that box for a few hundred bucks in the 2010s.
I appreciate you sharing this very cool purchase. this was very cool. you know what you are doing, I'm here for the journey and entertainment. Keep doing it Rudy
On TCG the starter booster is ~$40. It looked like a single box had 25 boosters and each case had six boxes. Each case is about $6K each. Nice win, Rudy. Oh, and in addition, the starter decks are ~$50-$75 and are all listed as "Out of Stock" on TCG. You are now the main distributor.
Yes, I am from Belgium, and yes, I can confirm, local video-rental shops and toy-stores with collectibles still have tons of these boxes at the moment, as we speak. It's not strange to find loads of these boxes up for auction or even in a dumpster, after one of these dated video-rental shops files for bankrupcy.
Man this brings back memories. I had already been playing MTG for like 5 years when this was released. I remember getting the Gift Box version of this which I think was very similar to the Game box but it came with an instructional video, for Christmas in 99. Pretty sure this was the set that Grim Tutor was first released in, I remember working on a play set of those back in the day.
very cool. i played MTG '97 to around 2000 and remember these. i even picked up the red deck back then on a whim cause i wanted some starter burn and goblin cards to bling out my deck.
Ah, good ol' star symbol! With a RARE goblin hero! My favorite card from the starters is "Vizzerdrix" the monster bunny, mostly because it references the monster bunny that was printed in Tempest "Kezzerdrix".
Hey Rudy, it’s kind of sad the most famous courtroom sketch artist probably in the country. If not just Washington DC Virginia and Maryland died. His name is William Hennessy. He just died at age 67. His son was in my high school class and my dad bought a sketch and my mom bought a sketch when he sketched one of their gang murder trials. Lol In one case my dad earned the confession from a gang leader of a gang that was charged with over 40 murders for hire hits and my dad only cleared $40,000 in that case that took an entire year of 18 hour days 7 days a week every day this is in 1994 lol here’s the craziest part the courtroom sketch artist has charged us $2000 for the sketch and it was just a crude pencil sketch that took less than half an hour to make and he was already getting paid a salary to Make sketches for the courts that was comparable to the defense attorneys salery. Lol his son kind of avoided me in high school. I don’t think I remember him saying a single thing to me, but I just found out hennessey had seven kids and 13 grandkids. Cheers and happy holidays. I have no crazy story about that other than that. lol
There is a booster box of these. There's only about 10 of them though that were unopened. It never got a wide release. Also time warp is like.. 5-10 usd. Edit: If this is the collection I suspect it to be, they were stored in ohio for about 15 years in a climate controlled facility in the back behind a cage. If it's not that collection this is definitely not the largest remaining collection of starter materials.
I used to manage a store back when Starter came out. We couldn't give that shit away... There were booster boxes, but a lot of stores refused to reorder them. We stocked the decks at blowout prices for almost a decade, they're not rare. I suspect a lot went to landfills. If anyone is nostalgic for Starter, you're being bamboozled!
That pack with Denizen of the Deep given to me in 1999 for free got me into magic and every week from then for 25 years to present day I have purchased packs from the same LGS.
This was the set that got me playing MTG for reals. I used to have a complete binder with each card from the set, and I remember a few cards were pretty expensive.
Amazing!!!!! I think Ed from Dualbrain mtg might want 5 or 6 pack blister for his collection! I hope he see this and send you an email Rudy! This is fricking amazing! What a find! The memories!!!!! Thnaks for sharing!!!!
I loved this stuff, that Thorn elemental was my favorite card for a long time. By the way, that was a wonderful idea Rudy, I would love to crack a couple of those decks and show my son what magic was like back then.
Wondering if Rudy is able to do a live unboxing for historical values. Would give a worth to what this product is valued at and maybe get some chase cards as well.
i got a few starter sets called Rivals from like 95 and they're the oldest sealed mtg i have, a couple US and a european version. they're not worth much but they're interesting because they were printed by a different company from everything else. i believe they were still trying out options as they scaled up.
I think you could like time warp into summer bloom and do anything from wicked pact mid-to late game or nature’s lore on top of wood elves to make absurd mana. It just took forever.
To me as someone who deals in other collectibles, I'd sell off roughly half of everything to the point where you make your investment and maybe some profit. THEN looking at market and current availability decide whether to keep or sell of what's left. Are boosters everywhere sealed and still cheap and staying cheap? Maybe sell off all but a few sealed master boxes while you know you'll make a good bit. Are the starter decks/some of them rarer than others? maybe keep those. Looking on ebay sealed boosters and decks seem out there to some degree. But you are probably right about the master boxes, that kind of stuff for most collectibles is long gone by now or in the hands of collectors. I like the idea of sorting out what's actually there, get stuff labeled correctly (the sealed master box stuff), then sell off everything already open at least, for now lol.
Maybe a regular trading card game store could operate that way, but Rudy has the Costco set up, where he has additional capital to retain inventory and hold it through the years. He focuses on sealed products, and that alone fetches a premium ticket
foils in MTG started to come out in 2001 if my memory serves me right i could be wrong but i sure no earlier then 2000. but this is a nice find i think even if it has no market value it still could be high value to a niche market where there are a handful of people seeking these starters. say a pack is worth 30USD in the market today but there might be some people willing to by at 50USD or even as high as 75USD per pack. this is however going to be a vary small market for it possibly only a few handful of people actively seeking these packs and decks out just out of nostalgia.
You should open a museum just for magic , charge $5 entry free for patrion . And you could host tours like willy Wonka . Put a toco bell in the food court
Rudy I finally got my membership to your patreon and maybe this is my smooth Timmy brain talking but I don’t find it to be easy or intuitive. Could you consider making a small video breaking down how to purchase something through the patreon?
Not only is this rare, but there are also some cool singles in there : grim tutor,. time warp, armageddon, piracy, righteous fury etc. I mean those are not 1000 dollar cards but they are worth a pretty penny, especially packfresh. I would guess the different theme decks are like 100-150 a pop, and the starter demo itself also like 40-50 bucks plus maybe 40 or so for each booster pack, maybe 50 ???
Time to build your private MtG MUSEUM soon, right? 😀 Little breakdown: The starter box (2 decks) is still about $15-20, not worth much. The blister boosters are about $50 each. The precon decks are between $80 and $120 each, but very low offered amount so no clue if that is representative.
My initial reaction was oh god those again. I remember seeing those on a encap at Walmart forever. Then they became tournament legal along with portal and grim tutor was like $100.
This stuff is so old and niche its really hard to say the value. Card kingdom doesn't even have those sealed starter games or decks on their list of potential sealed product. Card kingdom is the largest company that sells magic to my knowledge, and they don't even sell these. The packs are sonewhere around 50-60, but honestly even that could be off given they are in that double seal with the cardboard they are attached to. Freaking cool stuff. Man I would love to do a starter 1999 draft
When Rudy says "I have no idea"... he actually means "I know exactly how much this is worth"
He knows what like the blisters and the decks are worth, but as sealed bricks there is a premium, and it is impossible to say how high that is since there are none on the market.
Over 3 fiddy

I was 18 years old! 😮
I got that exact same set for Christmas that year (same age, too).
Same age, same experience. I wish I still had mine.
Dude I laughed so hard when the blister escaped into the box void at 1:06
Immediately thought, yep that's gone forever
I did once you pointed it out! 😂
Let me tell you the value of the brick starter deck.
Not a single product in modern day magic can teach you the game like that box does. That single box made me a player for 25 years. You can even play a mock game that helps you understand the intricacies of the game.

Damn shame what happened to the game IMO. Anyway I’m done yelling at the clouds today.
I feel the same.
Too bad they changed the game. Now it can't teach you how to block correctly. THANK 2024 WIZARDS!
its not a game anymore, its more and more shifting into collecting, grading etc..
No sealed was better than revised starter n 2 packs of dark
Yea, this is def magic from much, MUCH simpler times
I started playing magic with that starter set. Vizzerdrix and Trained Orgg were big boys when getting those out.
My first and only magic card my friend gave me was vizzerdrix when i was 9-10 years old
I won a box of starter as a prize in a sealed deck tournament in 2000.
The nostalgia has intrinsic value. Very cool find Rudy. I didn’t play back then, and still find these cool!
That starter deck with the ogre brings back memories.
*trained
You definitely should make a video opening some of the packs, would love to see the contents
I appreciate you sharing this very cool purchase. this was very cool. you know what you are doing, I'm here for the journey and entertainment. Keep doing it Rudy

As written

seems like you’re missing out on free money by not exporting them?
It's insane you know this and don't get your stacks on by selling
Do u mean in the US or over there ?
OG Grim Tutor came from Starter 1999. So there are cards worth something in there.
The good old star symbol. I would love to open a Starter booster
Man this brings back memories. I had already been playing MTG for like 5 years
when this was released. I remember getting the Gift Box version of this which I think was very similar to the Game box but it came with an instructional video, for Christmas in 99. Holy crap I remember seeing these in stores 🤯
I just come here for the, “folks.”
I love seeing Rudy gush over old product
very cool. i played MTG '97 to around 2000 and remember these. i even picked up the red deck back then on a whim cause i wanted some starter burn and goblin cards to bling out my deck.
I pulled a grim tutor out of one of these at Barnes and Nobles in the Mall back in 99'.
Rudy, please get a patron to open one of those blister cases!!
This is the first time I quit magic. Most of these preconstructed decks had card lists on the back. I preferred not knowing what cards where inside
Ah, good ol' star symbol! With a RARE goblin hero! My favorite card from the starters is "Vizzerdrix" the monster bunny, mostly because it references the monster bunny that was printed in Tempest "Kezzerdrix".
The symbol was misprinted, it is still found at common levels
You need to do an opening. Open one of each type. Would love to see what kind of stuff is in those.
I'd definitely watch you do a box opening of these!

such a clean design to the packs, even as they yellow they still have aesthetic color design.
How do we purchase one of these from you? I would love to play with my son with one of those starter decks
Woud be great to see an opening of these items!
Rudy should do the “should I open it or should I keep it sealed?” pack openings.
Wow, what an awesome opportunity to pick up so many vintage sealed items. These are very, very rare, especially as sealed cases and master cases
It's the dream to find something like this sealed, long forgotten in some garage or warehouse
Yeah, but he paid 40k, a price most can't. And then you'd have to sell a ton of it to get the $$$ back
@@trashman3636you don't seem to have understood what he said
This is insane, what a find, you'll have to take inventory
Very Niiice!!! Now let’s unbox all of it shall we?
That was fun. Wish you have a few openings of some of those.
There is a booster box of these. There's only about 10 of them though that were unopened. It never got a wide release. Also time warp is like.. 5-10 usd.

This is so rad.
Nm time warp is 20 from starter 1999
These were the decks that came with the release of MTGO as well. It was an entire lobby of just those decks constantly going on and it was a blast.
Can you do 10$ on all of them?
What about $10 for all of them. C'mon Rudy, help a brother out. Lost all my money on 0DTE options cause of Wallstreet Bets.
Wow. Amazing find. I’d love to see an opening or as you said opening a starter box with my child to play the game and experience that together
I used to manage a store back when Starter came out. We couldn't give that shit away... There were booster boxes, but a lot of stores refused to reorder them. Oh my gosh! Starter 99 was my first set!! I'm so psyched to see this
If this was pokemon, 100 million.
Worth?
My first MTG pack was one of those starter boosters and I got denizen of the deep. I still have the card. Thanks for sharing your find.
What an epic score…had fun collecting old Portal and Starter Sets: no value but love going through the binder and remembering old days.
i'd buy anything not labeled collectors edition.
There's a lot of nostalgia seeing this, wow.
Also if I'm not mistaken there's grim tutor and settler as hits on those aren't they? And timer warp.
The 99 starter deck was the first magic product I ever purchased. Dang that brings me back
I loved this stuff, that Thorn elemental was my favorite card for a long time. By the way, that was a wonderful idea Rudy, I would love to crack a couple of those decks and show my son what magic was like back then.
Wondering if Rudy is able to do a live unboxing for historical values. Would give a worth to what this product is valued at and maybe get some chase cards as well.
You could host an entire retro sealed/draft tournament with this haul. Epic fun.
Way cool. I was looking at Anthologies box sets for the same kind of reason recently. "How many are left? Who will want to experience this some day?"
You sound so happy man
wouldnt you be if you was a multi milllionaire lol.
Have a sale for Patrons near April Fool's day weekend! ;)
that was so cool to see, my heart was pumping. Thank you for the video
Nice buy! Back from the good old days when magic was dying, no good cards were printed and people left the game…..
Whoah, hard to believe there's so much of this stuff left! Who holds onto it for so long?🤯
Rudy’s top comment in the comment section is a scam bot comment with bots liking it with more bot comments about retiring at 27. Lmao.
Those Starter sets were the first MTG product I’ve ever bought. Those got me into it
These seems to be the 1999 Starter Decks and boosters, and yes, booster boxes of these boosters DO exist :) Cool video :D
Definitely agree that you should mark it down and sell to Patrons...from a long-term Patrons POV...lol
Pretty cool find, not to mention the buy cost. :) Id buy a starter game deck. I have never played this game. Might be worth the experience/value.
I had those portal starters back in the day. The OGs were nostalgic.
I would love to get one of those big box starter kits.
I started Magic with these
I would love one of those starter game deck sets. To be able to crack that open with my little brother and play OG MTG would be bliss.
i got a few starter sets called Rivals from like 95 and they're the oldest sealed mtg i have, a couple US and a european version. they're not worth much but they're interesting because they were printed by a different company from everything else. i believe they were still trying out options as they scaled up.
Watching you discover the lost magic boxes is fun.
I think you could like time warp into summer bloom and do anything from wicked pact mid-to late game or nature’s lore on top of wood elves to make absurd mana. It just took forever.

The WOTC Pokémon cards of that era also had the same "Starter" "Intermediate" "Advanced" logos on them too.
constantly preaches don't open sealed product then casually opens cases
Craziest shit is that the “bear” edh thing happened. Never would have foreseen a bear from beginner product that everyone pissed on becoming a hit
foils in MTG started to come out in 2001 if my memory serves me right i could be wrong but i sure no earlier then 2000.
but this is a nice find i think even if it has no market value it still could be high value to a niche market where there are a handful of people seeking these starters.

Rudy I finally got my membership to your patreon and maybe this is my smooth Timmy brain talking but I don’t find it to be easy or intuitive. Could you consider making a small video breaking down how to purchase something through the patreon?
There is more stuff like this around then even rudy realises i think😊
"As the weeks become the months become the yeaaaaars"
Not only is this rare, but there are also some cool singles in there : grim tutor,. time warp, armageddon, piracy, righteous fury etc. I mean those are not 1000 dollar cards but they are worth a pretty penny, especially packfresh. I would guess the different theme decks are like 100-150 a pop, and the starter demo itself also like 40-50 bucks plus maybe 40 or so for each booster pack, maybe 50 ???
Time to build your private MtG MUSEUM soon, right? 😀
Little breakdown:
The starter box (2 decks) is still about $15-20, not worth much.
The blister boosters are about $50 each.
The precon decks are between $80 and $120 each, but very low offered amount so no clue if that is representative.
I usually don’t jump into new projects, but after seeing the potential with Adaxum, I’m in. Time to diversify my portfolio!
What you say at 7:38 is completely true.
They didn't make boxes of packs for sale or precon. Only starter decks and single packs
This is a very cool find! Love it
My initial reaction was oh god those again. I remember seeing those on a encap at Walmart forever. Then they became tournament legal along with portal and grim tutor was like $100.
Grim tutor Black was a major card. I sold mine for over 100$
Time warp isn’t a $25 card, you’re probably thinking about Evolving Wilds. Honest mistake really
Reminds me of those Trained Ogre commercial lol and the goblin one etc. funny and good times.
Simpler times.
So rare and so scarce! What a find! And you'll get to take none of it to the grave with you. Such is life.
Do you play the long with a percentage of your product and put it untouched in a vault somewhere , Rudy?
900% SHOCKED there was a floor to catch that loose pack.
I have recently played these with my kids and then bought them the Foundations beginners box.
Would finding 2 pallets of this stuff tank the value of the rest of the stuff in the wild?
I remember buying those starter bricks at the 7-11 in my neighborhood when I was like in middle school. Maybe even elementary school.
Rudy hasn't seen my basement. ;)
