Pure craftsmanship and hard work on display right there Paul. You can make an Arkansas white oak do anything you want it to. Let me know if you need a cameraman one day.
Preacher's Day Off Howdy Preacher- glad ya came by. I love working with oak. You just might get a call on that camera man offer hehe. I caint cook like you and our brother at Fitzpreachet Farm but at least it’ll fill you up lol. God bless y’all and have a Merry Christmas
I want to build me a log cabin. I been workin and wanna buy some land. I ain’t got too much money so who knows. You’re awesome sir. Always blows my mind how every piece on a cabin takes a good deal of effort to craft. Mighty task but it’s only as doable as you will do.
Howdy y’all- I wish you the very best with your cabin build. It’s quite a bit of physical work but I feel it’s well worth it. There’s a certain satisfaction when you get a piece of the “puzzle “ finished and on the cabin. Thank you so much for watching the video. Let me know if I can help you with anything. Take care and God’s blessings to y’all

Nice! This cabin build is the most interesting thing on RUclips! I was thinking about this all day. Your videos are great. I really wish they were longer. I could watch you working on this build all day! Can’t wait for the next one! Thank you
oklahomacrabber Howdy- Thank you for the kind words. You are an encouragement to us. There will probably be some videos that will be longer cause there will be a lot of explaining to do. Thanks for watching and commenting. God bless y’all
it wasn't trouble....it was fun! You're a pro with the broadaxe...look forward to seeing the sawmill work...Thanks Paul!

Wayne Beaver Howdy Wayne- thanks for hangin with me. All I needed was some of your guitar pickin to help me go a little bit faster. God bless y’all and have a Merry Christmas
When Jesus was born Gods Word says the Shepard’s were out in the fields with their flocks. Shepherds are not in the fields in December in Israel. Their flocks are in their winter pastures. Something to think about.
NorthWest Firefighter You have a good point there. Thanks for sharing that. We have done lots of things because of tradition. Blessings
When you were hewing I was reminded of carving a turkey breast! I got to stop thinking about food! 🤣
I noticed the broad axe handle has an offset so the head can be closer to the log without whacking your knuckles. That's smart!
Brandon Blasiola Howdy Brandon- Thank ya for watching. I have an offset handle in all my broad axes cause it hurts when ya bang them knuckles lol. Don’t know if you watched the video where I showed how to make the offset handles but check it out. God bless y’all

Great video! That hewing sure is easier when your watching someone else do it haha. Looks great! Those will be dandy floor joists
Fluty Lick Homestead Howdy y’all- thanks for coming by and watching. Watching someone else did it kinda makes me itch to do it myself. But, you’re right- it is easier watching the other person hew. Lol. God bless ya’ll

Birdnest58 Howdy- for me hewing is very therapeutic. Thank you for watching. God bless you
You got some really good camera angles on the hewing! I can't wait to see the method you use to attach those rounded logs to your sill logs.
I just want to say again how much I appreciate what you are doing, here. I look forward to every new video.
Howdy Jim- the Lady was gettin kinda close to the work hehe. I will cut pockets in the sill logs for the tenons of the joists. God bless y’all
Thanks for sharing man.
Cordell W. Carr Howdy buddy- l hauled in a load of logs today. Hope to get another load in the morning. God bless ya
Awesome video! Keeping the old skills alive!
Howdy Lumberjack- what I’m hewing in the video is post oak. The wood properties are about the same as white oak. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
Your videos are by far the best to learn from. I get way more from each one of yours than I can from multiple others.
I’m finally done with chemo treatments and am going to have my strength back soon, so I can get some logs down and get handles made for my broadaxes. I don’t have any particular projects in mind, just learn to hew a straight line to start. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and giving an old man a reason to get back outside! God bless you, sir.
wayne lewis Howdy Wayne- Thank you so much for watching our videos. I sure appreciate you. I hope and pray you get along well and regain all your strength. Nice work with that axe!!!!
That looked real straight!!!
Happy Hollidays! ✌
Sunny Ray Howdy Sunny- I kinda fell in love with that axe and really enjoy using it. When I lived in Pensacola I saw pine trees everywhere. How far are you from there? I saw lots of loads going to Cantonement to the St.Regis paper mill. Some mornings I could smell that mill all the way to the coast where I lived. God bless y’all

Would be nice to be a part of your growing fan my friend
When my grandfather built his log house, he set the joists in place first then made my dad level the tops of the floor joist logs with a foot adze. That made my dad really angry because he said his father was too "cheap" to purchase sawn lumber. Instead, the old man uses the logs on his property for joists and made my dad level them enough for my grandfather to nail down flooring directly to them. "Cheap"? Maybe, but it worked. His children and grandchildren returned to that log house for many years when celebrating holidays.
I don't know about using an adze. I think I like your way better. Either way, it was fun to watch the old man work. He did everything the old fashioned way, butchering his hogs in the back yard, raising crops with a mule and plow. He never owned a car or a power tool in his whole life and read his Bible from the light of a kerosene lamp every night. Thanks for preserving the traditions. Brings back memories.
Ron V Howdy Ron, sounds like your grandfather was a sure nuff old timer. Hewing the joists with a foot ads was definitely one of the ways people did that. I had the oak timber and decided to do this just to show it could be done this way. Normally I frame the floor with lumber. But, l sure enjoyed doing it this way. God bless you
Very well done indeed !

You make that look easy, and I'd wager that if I tried it I'd find that it's not nearly as easy as you made it look. Next time I skid some logs up for fire wood I might take an axe to one, just to find out.
Huck Finn Howdy Huck- I still love having an axe in my hands, especially when it’s real sharp and the handle fits me. That’s a key ingredient in being able to hew. Some logs just are easier to hew than others. I’m sure you can do it. Do you have a broad axe? Not sure if you can see it in the video, but that axe is really tuned up nice. I spend quite a bit of time on my axes getting them just right. God bless y’all
Easy to tell that ain't the first time you ever did that!!!! The "production staff" got some great angles of the hewing process!!! Is the handle you made for James' axe meant to be used for that type of work?
Carolina Chris Outdoors Howdy Chris- oh, l guess I’ve swung a lick or two. The handle l made James is the same kind handle in the axe I used to flatten the top of the joist. And yes, the Lady is doin a great job I think. Thanks for saying encouraging words for her. She has her hands full just puttin up with me and having to do the editing. God bless y’all

The Bearded Carpenter the heavy snows are still to come. We currently have 1 foot of snow due to a couple of mild spells. As for the ticks we don’t have them in abundance this far north but I read a report last winter that ticks have been found to survive sub zero temperatures!! I’ll take the snow thank you 😉

Nice job Paul :) not many places you can get a tutorial on the braud axe heuing. Cheers
Richard Solomon Howdy Richard- hewing is one of my favorite things to do. Thanks for watching and commenting. God bless y’all
Awesome video. I'm watching your stuff because I am trying to learn how to hew.
I have a question about the level line you drew at the start. How do you know both lines are at the same elevation?
I would like to learn your way for layout because it seems more efficient than mine but I didnt understand that part.
The way I do it is a plumb line through the center of log at either end then that becomes my reference and I use my framing square on either end.
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for watching the video. Hopefully, I can answer your question. In this video I made a level line on both ends of the log. It doesn’t matter if the log itself is level. The two level lines on the ends are connected with a chalk line and that is what I hew down to. If you want send me an email at thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com and I’ll try to help you figure out how I do my layout. It may sound complicated but actually it’s just a series of very simple steps put together. Hope to hear from you. Take care and the very best to you. God bless
@@TheBeardedCarpenter thanks a lot, I sent you an email.
that axe really has a nice ring to it. is it solid tool steel?
Howdy Harley- it probably is the oldest broad axe I have. It has tool steel forge welded to the body. I sure enjoy using it. Thank you so much for the comment. God bless
😎👍
Hey Paul, great video. I love the ring of that axe. Can't wait till you start dovetailing those logs. I'm wanting to build one too and i want to use pine too. What do you think of using sycamore or cottonwood? Thanks and God bless.
James Russo Howdy James- Yeah, That ol axe is sweet. I’ve never used cotton wood or sycamore before so I couldn’t honestly say about them. I did watch a video where the man used cotton wood. I’m gettin all the prep work done and then we’re be notching logs. Stick with me and we’ll have fun! Good bless y’all
Sycamore is hard.... I've tried it... basswood easier, poplar too...
But Sycamore rots fastest and dries quickest, splits too
What is the point of a double bit axe? I thought maybe one side was for felling and the other side for splitting, but I looked at one yesterday at an antique store and both sides seemed to be shaped the same. Thank you and happy new year!
Howdy Tim- I guess all the double bit axes I’ve ever seen had one of the edges filed in a blunter edge for cutting in a knot or for splitting. The other edge was really keen for chopping. I guess people had their own idea how to sharpen both edges. The one I use has one edge that was kept with a keen edge. That side of the axe had been used and sharpened much more than the blunter edge. Hope this helps. God bless
@@TheBeardedCarpenter thank you. I was looking for a thicker cross section on one side than the other. I didn't consider that the cutting variations could be achieved simply by the edge. Thank you!
@@timbarry5080 I was in the hardware store this morning and the double bit axe they had was ground the same on both edges. Blessings
,,,,B,,C,,you do good work my friend,,man i could hear a little ring come out of that broad ax,,good piece of steel for sure,,, i sure would like to make you a leather sheath for that ax,, let me know the width & length of that ax head ,, good video i sure enjoyed watching,,,
old school with a modern twist Howdy Mr. James- Wow, l don’t know what to say. I don’t deserve the quality of leather work you do but I’lol send you the information you need. You’re a top notch craftsman in everything you do!!! I’m honored to have you as a friend. God bless y’all and have a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
I’m planning a 12x16 dovetail cabin build. It will be my first hand hewn cabin. I’ll be using southern yellow pine for the walls. I have limited white oak so want to avoid harvesting any of it unless I have to. Will I be ok using pine for the sill logs and floor joists or do I really need to use oak? Also it’s my understanding is it’s best to dry the logs before building. Is this true and if so, should I peel and dry the pine logs before hewing or should I peel and hew and then dry? Thanks so much for all the information you share! I am loving your videos.
Howdy Thomas- I use southern yellow pine logs for the sill logs keeping them off any concrete with treated lumber. I like to use the logs fresh cut and allow for the settling that will take place. If you are going to cut your own timber just cut the first tree and hew it to get the feel of hewing. Fresh cut trees are so much easier to hew than dryer logs. Also, if you cut very many ahead there’s a chance wood borers can get in them. Once you get a log hewed it’s good to get tbark off down through the cambium layer. That’s what the bugs go for. Go back and watch our videos from the beginning of the dovetail log cabin build. I explain what you will need to know. You can use pine for the floor joists and rafters and any framing you might do. Send me an email at thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com if you have any questions. I will be happy to help you any way I can. I admire anyone who builds their own log cabin. I certainly wish you the very best with your project. God’s blessings to you
Thank you so much sir. I’ll definitely watch your build several more times before I start my own. I have a list of notes from your videos and it seems I find something to jot down every time I re-watch one. I’ll email you a few pictures once it’s complete. Thanks again and God bless!
@@thomaslishman1582 About where are you located? I’m in western Arkansas in the Ouachita Mountains.
I’m in central Alabama. 30 miles SE of Tuscaloosa. No mountains here, just hills. The trees I’m looking at harvesting are not as large as I’d like but I’m thinking they will work out alright. Will just take a few more logs to reach the top. I figure once they are bucked and peeled they’ll be 10” at the butt and 7”-8” at the tip. What do you think?
@@thomaslishman1582 Log cabins were built with what was available. They should be easier to hew being smaller logs. Blessings
really enjoying your videos. Question for you, I have a lot of silver maple here on our homestead, some black locust, mulberry and hackberry. But the silver maple is really the only trees big enough to think of utilizing here. Are silver maples too soft to be used in log construction or could they be used for small structures?
Forgot to mention those saw horses! Very nice!
Bonnie Doon Homestead Howdy y’all- I have never used silver maple before but I have used black locust before for support posts. Black locust won’t hardly ever rot. God bless
Bonnie Doon Homestead Yeah, those sawhorses are quite necessary for the weight I put on em. I plan on mentioning them and how I make them in a video. Bless y’all
@@TheBeardedCarpenter That would be awesome, they look very handy. I like the round at each end. Hey another problem I have is with making good handles and hanging them. I have not watched your broadaxe handle video yet, but will soon. Any help there with handles and hanging I am all ears! I will see how these silver maples fall. I hate harvesting them if I don't have a good use for them, but without harvesting them I will not know what I have. Maybe I will start with something small with them.
What did you use to flatten the back of the axes that you worked on?
Howdy John- on this particular axe l used a hand held grinder with 36grit sanding discs and then used a belt sander with 120grit to take out any grinder marks and to finish shaping. I didn’t worry about the heat because I knew it would be retempered. Hope this helps. God bless

6:47 I've been wondering why no one ever uses a froe for this part?
Jerry Whidby Howdy Jerry- a froe is would be very difficult for me to use. This broad axe is razor sharp and a froe is notoriously dull-hence the saying, “dull as a froe “. A broad axe would be the tool of my choice for hewing. Thank you for watching. God bless
