I really injoy your video`s especially when you are doing the broad axe work takes me back to the times i watched my mothers father use`ing one he used to make railroad tie`s he would get about three dollars a wagon load of tie`s this was dureing the depression . just used a team of mules
and wagon plus a good axe and a good broad axe that was all he had to work with. use the axe to cut the tree`s down and to length etc. learn`d alot from my grand dad, and miss`d him when he pass`d on. love your video`s.

Does the "green-ness" of the log matter for this tenon cutting? Seems like the dimensions will change as the log dries out. Great video. I'd like to know more are your chisel/slip, as others have said.
shiretook Howdy- that’s a good question. The dimensions could change some because these oak logs are still green, however, the change won’t affect the strength of the timber. I will put lag bolts through the tenons into the sill logs and they can’t twist or move- I wish cut pockets to match the size of each tenon. As with any green, unseasoned woods there will be some shrinkage. There will be more on this later. The particular chisel I was using is a Woodcraft brand that might not be available now- I’ve had that one over 30 years. There are timber framing chisels available- depends on what you want to spend. I also use slicks when I’m paring. Sorry this got so long. God bless

Dear Bearded Carpenter, could you please explain how to arrive at the dimensions (length, breadth and height) of the Tenons like you have explained the dimensions of a Notch recently? Also, how do these dimensions vary with the size of the House? Thanks in advance.
AS Howdy- the size of the tenon will vary on each log because of the different size of diameter of the logs. I just try to get as much as I can depending on how big it is and still be able to have four square sides. I don’t try to keep them all the same size because I can cut each pocket to fit the corresponding tenon. Each one is measured and put on a chart and I can work from the chart to cut each pocket. The length of each tenon is three inches that will be set in the sill logs. Hope this helps. God bless you

It still amazes me that kids these days have never used a chisel and have no idea how to sharpen tools craftsmanship and pride in your tools are lost on this generation it’s a shame
