  • Want to talk about iconic intros? Unsolved Mysteries had one of the best. Get a double whammy going with The X-Files, and everyone pees their pants. Going back to revisit this series, especially in bed at night, still caused the same anxiety I had as a child. It started as a series of seven specials with Raymond Burr, Karl Malden, and Robert Stack presenting. Only one could remain! Stack came out victorious among the other competitors. It was one of the greatest WrestleMania matches of all time! It wasn't, but it would be a lot cooler if it was. Stack became the host, and the rest is childhood trauma history. Today we look back at the great Unsolved Mysteries!

The late 80s to early 90s was such a great time for creepy tv. Tales from the Crypt, Unsolved Mysteries, X-Files… it was a stacked deck.
Unsolved Mysteries (the original iteration) was a perfect mix of spectral phenomena, lost treasure, extraterrestrial phenomena, true crime and the occasional lost loves eps.
Also Robert Stack was perfect for the role. Other hosts came and went but he by far was the best. One thing I do like about the new iteration of the show is the little homage to him right at the end as if to say “you may be gone, but we will never forget you and what you contributed to this show.”. Touching.

There were six victims in total. When the killer was caught his explanation was simply because he felt like doing it!

As a 80's and early 90's child, this show was the perfect "allowed to watch" companion piece to my burgeoning love of horror, mystery, and true crime. It supported my gravitation towards science, and curiosity of the unknown. Robert Stack introduced Unsolved Mysteries, but OG Unsolved introduced me to the X-Files. Those darker shows my parents would watch too (I had to sneak-watch some horror movies, but those two shows were fine. Binge-able, even).

08:42 *That psychiatrist is none other than the legendary Dr John E Mack*
He was a Pulitzer prize winner, professor and head of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School and the greatest supporter of the abduction phenomena the world has ever seen. To date Unsolved Mysteries is still the most respectful and intelligent reporting that the subject has ever been given. Unsolved Mysteries understood something quite profound, that If these people had witnessed a murder their testimony would be believed in any court of law, yet because they witness and experience something otherworldly they are scoffed at and ridiculed. They deserve so much more than this and on this show above all others they are shown as genuine and are given the respect they deserve. Search for 'Unsolved Mysteries Missing Time' for an incredible episode. If you are not yet a believer this is the one that might change your mind.

This was one of only two things that gave me nightmares as a kid (the other was Night of the Living Dead, because a kid on my bus convinced me it was based on a true story). Aside from the intro music, the dramatic reenactments always got to me. they always showed an escaped psycho killer peeking in a window, watching someone watching Unsolved Mysteries and it always looked like it was my house. Lol. That and the alien abduction episodes terrified me. Especially since I live in Maine, not far from where that took place.

Now I know we're kindred spirits, Niki! lol I absolutely Love Unsolved Mysteries. I watched it constantly as a kid and I still watch it on Pluto, I just go to the channel and leave it on there. Before that I remember each season being put up on prime in HD years ago like every month and I binged it everytime they put up another season but I noticed they removed segments which was very disappointing. Next to The X-Files, UM was the show I always looked forward to watching the most in the 90's. Something about the music and opening title card sequence (no matter which version) always set the perfect eerie mood. The tonality of the show was just on another level especially compared to anything else on at the time. Stack was no doubt the incredible icing on an already perfect cake. He was a legendary host and could never be replaced. You picked so many great segments but one of my faves was the blob segment that was about the gelatinous goo that rained down over a town for a short period which got the entire town sick or even the hum segment which actually has an X-Files episode based on the phenomena. So many great segments could be mentioned but I'll stop now. lol Thanks for shining light on an always worthy show.

That UFO episode was def one of the best. As a kid these definitely creeped us out and as an adult it's just hella entertaining, especially the Unexplained Death segments. I only wish we could have done without a lot of those wishy-washy Lost Loves segments. Some got extra cheesy.
A lot of people perhaps forgot but in the 90s show Dinosaurs there was an episode that parodied Unsolved Mysteries, where they turn on the tv and there is a dino with a khaki trench coat narrating while walking down a foggy smoke-machined alley. Very funny 😂🤣

I loved this show when it came out. I have some scary memories with this show. Loved the Host Stack of this show hes voice made the stories even scarier. Sadly, when the show changed the host. I lost interest in watching the show. Awesome show when the reruns are with Robert Stack I watch them again for the stories and the host.
