The Entire Criterion Collection Supercut

  • Here it is, folks: every movie in the Criterion Collection, as of May 2023. For those not familiar, the Criterion Collection is a long-running curated series of DVDs and Blu-rays of, in their own words, "important classic and contemporary films from around the world," ranging from popular titles to foreign titles to Hollywood classics to small indies and cult films, each carefully restored and bundled in gorgeously designed packaging with oodles of extras and bonus material. Every month, four to six new titles are announced, and each is given its own unique spine number. As of May 2023, spine numbers have been assigned from 1 to 1,190, from Grand Illusion to Drylongso, and in this supercut I have brought together a small sample of every one of those 1,190 releases. (That whooshing sound you may have heard was me, exhaling when I was finally done.)
    A few disclaimers:
    * I have not included any of their pre-DVD Laserdisc titles, nor have I added anything from any of their other release lines, like Eclipse or Art House Essentials.
    * In the case of box sets, I chose a clip from one movie in that set. Since in many cases, the films in the set have their own separate spine numbers, this occasionally meant double-dipping, although I was careful not to repeat any specific clips.
    Enjoy, and if you're curious about Criterion's offerings, you can go find them at www.criterion.com/.

    Theya are the gold standard of physcial media! We would not have commentaries, special features, correct aspect ratio and more without them! I remember getting my first batch mid 00's. It was the moment my cinema pallet became way more refined and to this day, they still release stellar quality blu's/and finally 4k's too. I pray for the Kurosawa set (rights are tricky though) And I'd love to see them put out older anime films, a pipe dream of mine.

    This is kind of a trip for someone who's never seen like 90% of these films. Some of the imagery was familiar, and I got which one they'd come from just through cultural inference, others, I recognized the performers, and a bit of the filmography, and then others were just slick imagery and great editing.
    You'll have to forgive me if I like and comment on this with a few different RUclips accounts. I'm not afraid to fluff the numbers when it counts, after all.

    • @reckonedopinions
      @reckonedopinions  11 месяцев назад

      Omigod, sock puppet away! And thank you! Even after living intimately with the material for several weeks, I still can't catch it all as I'm watching, which is indeed why the elder gods created rewind and pause buttons.

  • @amysullivan8358
    @amysullivan8358 10 месяцев назад +2

    Great montage and must have taken a ton of effort. Are the films presented in the same order that Criterion released them? At times it seemed that way but I wasn’t sure. How did you source the clips? Did you use movie trailers?

    • @reckonedopinions
      @reckonedopinions  10 месяцев назад +3

      Thank you! They're presented in order of spine number, so yes, in order they were first added to the collection. Sourcing came down to the time-honored method of "whatever I can get my hands on," which became an annoying scavenger hunt in places. Trailers certainly got used, but not as often as you might think-the editing on some of those is so hyperactive that I often couldn't find even a two-second uninterrupted shot to pull.

    • @reckonedopinions
      @reckonedopinions  Месяц назад +1

      Barry Lyndon's in there, spine number 897, around the 17:45 mark (it's a dark clip, so it's easier to miss). This Can't Happen Here, strangely, is one of a few Ingmar Bergman titles NOT available on Criterion.

    i really don't mean this in a rude way... genuinely curious. Why have you done this and how long did it take?

    • @reckonedopinions
      @reckonedopinions  9 месяцев назад +3

      Valid questions, absolutely, and thank you for taking the time to ask! (I've certainly asked myself the "why" part a lot, especially in the middle of editing when I'm considering taking up drinking instead.) This video took over a hundred hours of work between research and editing, which I foolishly tried to cram into a three-week window. Not my wisest set of decisions, and it led to some looong days, but once I'd started I was impatient to see the final result, so sleep could wait.
      The most basic reason why is because making videos like this is fun for me-some people knit, I do this, to similar effect. More specifically in this case, I have a bit of an obsession with Criterion, and it seemed like a good fit for the kind of stuff I've done in the past. I remember seeing a RUclips clip about ten years ago with every Criterion title, but that was when the collection was half its current size, and the video kept its clips to a fraction of a second each and gave no title or spine number information, whipping through them so fast that they were basically unidentifiable. It was cool, but I was curious how it would look with more room to breathe and many more titles (answer: kind of exhausting). For all the effort it took I'm more than pleased with the result, and folks seem to be responding well, so it's all good.

    • @aarond9563
      @aarond9563 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@reckonedopinions Well... glad you enjoyed it at least. I don't know if I could say the same afterwards 😅. Sorry, I have a few more technical questions if that's okay? How did you decide what 2 second clip to choose out of hours of film to choose from?
      P.S. - I really like the stylistic choice of putting the spine information to mimic the actual spine of a film, but it does make it a little hard to read when it's on the screen for such a short amount of time. Like I said, I appreciate the look but maybe a horizontal title could have made it easier to read in your periphery while you watch the scene.

    • @reckonedopinions
      @reckonedopinions  9 месяцев назад +1

      No worries! Scene selection varied from title to title; I might have something in particular in mind if it's a movie I'm very familiar with, but most of the time I looked for something representative of the film and (hopefully) visually interesting. (That part got thrown out the window more often than I'd have liked, because a lot of these were a case of "take what you can get".)
      I hear you about the vertical titles. I actually had them printed horizontally when I started this project, but it ended up being more distracting than anything-having the text front and center would draw the eye away from the images half the time, and the titles would be going by too fast to read in their entirety anyway, so I settled for moving all that out of the way where you could look at it if you wanted and pause if you're dying to know what a particular shot is. I think the visual look of having the info imitating the spine layout, especially with that font, was what actually got me excited enough to finish the thing in the first place, so I don't regret the choice, but yeah, not the easiest to read.
