    That bass solo on Bytor and Snowdog always get me. And a funny fact is that Geddy Lee always improvised at this time and it was never the same, just look at the other shows on the same tour. But in this recording the improvisation was perfect! The bass solo fits perfectly

    In the 40th Anniversary release of Moving Pictures, they added a 2-CD full MP tour concert (2 hrs) recorded in Toronto. Interestingly, this medley was not part of the show.

    Justin, you still didn’t do all of the official live video Rush filmed and released during the Test For Echo Tour where they did all of 2112 in its entirety for the first time. Similar to how you did Exit Stage Left where you only did the audio, you did the same for this era as well. You may have done 1 or 2 videos like Natural Science maybe, but you definitely did not react to the official video of all of 2112 that Rush did. Stick Hits has it. Hope you can get to it sometime.

    Just love the sound of Geddy’s Rick on By Tor. I had this concert on VHS back in the early 80’s and played it constantly mostly due to this medley being omitted from the ESL LP.

    • @michaelzilkowsky2936

      I loved for the longest time the bass guitar tone on that VHS version. Right from the first note of Limelight through the middle 'wind in my hair' section of Red Barchetta to the riffing in By Tor, the top end just ripped off one's face, in a good way.
      My first reaction to the DVD release of the 3 live concerts was 'where did the top end go?!' A bit of live playing myself with some friends in our cover band, I never could quite get the top end overdrive out of my Rick that I heard in my head, however, the front pickup through an Ampeg head gave me the exact tone that Geddy got during this medley.... low end roar with a middling amount of overdrive. Alex did the mix, and I think he brought a proper balance to neck and bridge pickups.
      One thing that was always funny with our band was the utter confusion on the face of house soundmen to my Taurus pedals. They had no idea what they were, or how to plug them in........ but they were always jaw agape at the first low E note I would give them.....lol

    Few rock bands ascended to arena status in the early 80's and *stayed there for the next 35 years.* It's fun to think that this is the time period they would have been writing the songs that ended up on the Signals album. With all this stuff still fresh under their fingers no wonder that album turned out so well.

    Personally, I prefer the live versions of these songs from All The World’s A Stage, in 1976. The tour itself was in support of the 2112 album, and the songs were played separately, as opposed to an abbreviated medley. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen concert footage from that tour, and I’d be surprised if there is any with sufficiently clear audio.

    • @jasonwright285
      @jasonwright285 10 месяцев назад

      There’s also a great backstory behind the recording itself, given that it was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto. A classic venue, the preeminent concert hall in Canada, and the performance was a triumphant homecoming for the band.

    People sometimes look down on In The Mood since it is a bit of an outlier (i.e. Boy chatting up girl song), but in this context, it is a great rocker to finish the concert before they show you that they are a magnificent power prog band with 2112.
