My favorite Rush track. My high school nick name was By-Tor... believe me when i say you havent heard this song till youve heard the live extended over the top 11 minute version on All The Worlds A Stage 😁
NATURAL SCIENCE!! I know it was said by others down below, but I wanted to to keep the idea on top... Nice catch on the Cherub Rock, man. I never noticed that! Billy Corgan is a big Rush fan, so I don't think he was necessarily stealing the riff, I think he was (at worst) subconsciously using his Rush-inspired brain when writing it, or (at best) tossing in a little homage to his favorite musicians. The latter sounds like something he'd do. Corgan is a "musician's musician", a label often given to Rush as well.
You mention the part where Rush can sound so calm and serene. I call it sparse in setting a mood to a song before they go back full in your face. They understood as musicians how to create music as a whole. Everyone talks the master musicians they are. Their greater gift is how they could put it together in song writing!
I told you before you have only begun to enter the rabbit hole. The Necromancer, Fountains of Lambeth, Hemispheres side one, Cygnus X-1. The list goes on and on.
It's funny how fast you picked up on "biter" for By-Tor. The story of the characters was Rush's road manager remembered encountering two dogs, one a huge German Shepherd who attempted to bite everyone nearby (biter) and a small while dog that was afraid of it's shadow (Snow Dog).
T, this is a seminal song for Rush as it's their first "epic" (complete with Roman numerals and multi-part themes) and it gives their new drummer, Neil Peart, some solo spots to shine. Also, this song became a monster by the time they recorded it for the 1976 live album, "All The World's a Stage"! You should hear that version too! It's incredible and they really do take it to the next level! Do the Live version, at least for yourself. :)
You Definitely Always look behind the music and have full intention to delve into the musical meaning - vis the lyrics.. Major props -- your a thinking man to be sure..
I read this some where that the song was brought about at a friends house, that RUSH visited, and that friend had two dogs that fought around them and I believe that the dogs were name Thor & Snow dog.
Go ahead and do lyric breakdowns. Up to you. This as live performance is fun to watch. Geddy and Alex seem to have a lot of fun. Especially early days.
Definitely inspired by it, the syncopation is a bit different though. Corgan doesn't hide his love for Rush, just like Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) wears his love for Priest on his sleeve (hint hint).
My first time hearing this, as well. The lyrics are hilarious. "By-Tor"? the "To-Be's"? :-) I wonder if Snow Dog is the land of Maple Leafs? Great music.
On the back cover of the album under Geddy and Alex’s name it says By-Tor and Snowdog, Geddy’s By-Tor and Alex is Snowdog, and the noise during the section where it sound like they’re fighting, the deep, loud sound is supposed to be By-Tor and the guitar is supposed Snowdog. It’s supposed to represent the dogs fighting. The musicianship on Fly By Night (the album where this song is from), is incredible.
maybe one time you can do a whole Rush concert and sit back and enjoy the magic of RUSH. Ive seen them over 30 times from 1978 thru the Rush 40 tour. Their Whole approach from 2112 on was Fuck you to the industry well do what we want!
I be curious to your reaction to Jacobs Ladder with a lyric breakdown. Rush is the band that pulled me into hard and prog rock with Red Barchetta. It told a story and i was hooked.
The battle's over and the dust is clearing Disciples of the Snow Dog sound the knell Rejoicing echoes as the dawn is nearing By-Tor in defeat retreats to hell Snow Dog is victorious The land of the overworld Is saved again
SO JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, PART 2 TO THIS IS ( THE NECROMANCER ), WHICH IS OFF MY FAVORITE ALBUM ( CARESS OF STEEL ) WHICH IS THE AWESOME ALBUM RIGHT BEFORE THEIR EPIC MASTERPIECE ALBUM ( 2112 ) WHICH BLEW UPPPPPPP THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND MADE THEIR OWN PATH :)
PEOPLE WONDER AND FREAK OUT ABOUT NEIL ALWAYS! LOL :) NEIL ALWAYS KNEW WHEN TO BACK DOWN, TURN IT UP, TAKE OVER, GET OUT! HE'S THE LYRICIST, HE WAS THEIR SONG WRITER! :) GOD REST THE MAN'S SOUL :(
Hey TNT, Baker here. I just found our channel today (November 21 2021) and I love it! Though all I've listened too, so far, are pretty much all your Rush videos (started at about 6pm and it is now 1:45 am! Any Rush is my favorite band, for all the reasons you love them too,! And it just so happens that my 2nd and 3rd favorite bands are Led Zepplin and Smashing Pumpkins. For some unfathomable reason, I have never heard By-Tor and The Snow Dog. And I was astonished to here what I thought was a Smashing Pumpkin's original rif! But in this case, I prefer the sound of the guitar in the rif Smashing Pumpkins stole! I have very mixed feelings about this. I wonder if you've heard or heard of two other bands that I love, Sublime and Stained. I'd love to see some reaction videos from you on them. Two totally different bands from each other and from my 3 favorite bands I just mentioned. I have others too, but I wanted to start with these two bands for request. I have subscribed and look forward to watching your Led Zeppelin reaction videos. I did just watch the battle video Rush vs. Led Zeppelin too. I didn't notice any Smashing Pumpkins reaction videos, but I'll look again. I'm a fan of just about every genre of music, it just depends on the mood I'm in. I listen old-school style on vinyl, and cassettesvmostly, but use modern tech too. But I am old-school, 53 now, and so my music collection is old-school physical media. 'm an video/audiophile and have systems for just about every media format ever invented because I also am into electronics and collect it all just to enjoy the using different technologies used in recording since the dawn of recording. Ever heard of a Wire Recorder/player for audio? How about a CED disc for video? A wire recorder is exactly what it sounds like, audio recorded on a reel of wire! CED video discs are like LP's, vinyl records with audio and video on them! I'm fascinated by the tech, even though the quality of each is more obsolete than the dinosaurs. OK, I "talk" too much...sorry, later!
You have absolutely GOT to react to The Pass! Watch the live version, and have the lyrics up on another screen. It may be Neil's best lyrical composition, it's a short song, and it hits (in a good, uplifting way) like a sledgehammer if you've ever had feelings of depression or hopelessness. ruclips.net/video/xfiIrJd_yEE/видео.html
I realize it has been a while since you did this and my comment may not even be noticed. But Rush had a unique way of creating songs in the studio that radio stations didn't like to play on air. However, these songs were GREAT concert songs to see live as they would play portions of them with subtle changes. Here is a video of that also includes another song leading up to it: ruclips.net/video/J9RvC558gBE/видео.html
Comrade404 Blitzkrieg I’m tired of explaining. We get asked this daily. Honestly, for some reactors it is heartfelt. For most reactors it is not. They do reactions for recognition and money. You can tell by their reactions and commentary. Usually reactors who are faking it have nothing constructive to say about the music. The video you are currently watching is a snippet from a 3hr all rush live stream I hosted 2 months ago. You don’t go jamming Rush for 3hrs if you don’t like them, I’ll say that much. But check our channel. We have plenty of Rush reactions. Compare ours to others reactors and catch the stream next time I host it.
Billy Corgan has stated on the record that Smashing Pumpkins would never have existed without Rush. They have recorded Rush covers. And Cherub Rock is one of SP’s best tracks. Side note: same goes for Primus who literally played the YYZ intro on their first album.
DON'T STOLEN RIFFS JUST SUCKKKKKKKKKKKK MAN??? :( IT'S SO SAD FOR THE ORIGINAL GREAT AWESOME THOUGHTS AND IDEAS AND CREATIVITY! :( BUT IT HAPPENS ALOTTTTT
No offense to you, but, I think the fans would rather hear the music & see your reaction. But not so much the song break down, we already have our own little break down on each song in our heads already that they might clash with yours or realities. R.I.P Neil
I don't think a lyrical breakdown of ByTor would really accomplish anything, it's a fantasy story, this ones all about the music.
Based on a true story, of course embellished a bit. 😁
Headlong Flight from the Clockwork Angels album is a masterpiece
The whole Album was amazing... maybe the best final Album a band has done
Love Headlong Flight. The drumming on that song is incredible!
My favorite Rush track. My high school nick name was By-Tor... believe me when i say you havent heard this song till youve heard the live extended over the top 11 minute version on All The Worlds A Stage 😁

The Necromancer. Prince By-Tor (re)appears. Nuff said.

Excellent stuff. I second the request for The Trees
There are no bad Rush songs, Only bad Rush fans...😎
Good call on Smashing Pumpkins, as soon as I said it I was like oh for sure! Love me some Rush, so complex
I love this song mostly because Neal is going bat-shit crazy on the drums throughout the whole thing.
Rush where's my thing with drum solo
Yeah you always need to follow up By-Tor with The Necromancer. All awesome how Rush followed up one album with the next one
I'm a huge Rush fan and my favorite song which does not even hit the radar of many fans are reactions is Losing It.
the beginning of the era of over the top bombastic rush.
The Pass by Rush. That really saved my life and I'm sure a lot of other peoples'. That one is POWERFUL.
Prince By-Tor returns and has left his evil ways to save the day in “the Necromancer”
Can't go wrong with classic Rush.
The big prog launch off in Mastodon's The Last Baron opens with a quote from Rush's YYZ.
Prince By-Tor prince of evil squares for battle with The Snow Dog and boom..............
Damn, never picked up on the biter, seems obvious now. Or the smashing pumpkins influence, you have a great musical ear!
I'm impressed you heard the cherub rock riff. You have a great ear
We need natural science!
I concur
I also concur!
Yes we do!
Love your RUSH reactions, friend!
Ha! The stolen riffs. Good call. I didn't even connect the two.

Always great reactions from you! How about Fly By Night with lyrical breakdown?
If you are looking for a song to lyrically review, I suggest Entre Nous, by Rush of course.

Anthem from the same album please!
For some more excellent old-school Rush check out "No One At The Bridge."
One of my favorites, only complaint is it's too short, otherwise it's everything a Rush fan could want.
If I had to choose only one RUSH song, No one at the bridge gets my vote!
@@lerxstdirkst6181 I think that and Red Barchetta sum up Rush music really well

Far from their best work for one reason! Neil's drums sound appalling, and he admitted thus.

Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins would question that! :-)
Have got done Rush La Villa Strangiato yet?
Do a lyric breakdown too please?
Live version? LOL!
the bells at the end of the song were stuck in the groves and would keep ringing until you shut it off.
Other songs like Far Cry, Caravan, Bravado, Circumstances you need to check and do the live versions!
I would love to get a lyrical breakdown of "Nobody's Hero" from the Counterparts album. Yeah, I'm that old, I said album. Haha.
I had no idea that Smashing Pumpkins was influenced by Rush. That was a unique riff to center a song around.
Dude from Smashing Pumpkins is a HUGE RUSH "fanboy" He proclaims his love in "Beyond the lighted stage" 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂
When they got their walk of fame stars. It was Corgan who did the induction ceremony.
