This is why the internet is beautiful. A person from Sri Lanka can enjoy this gem by a band from Canada. Excellent interpretation of the lyrics. Subscribed.
Great one! Next: Xanadu - Exit Stage Left. It's a live concert video so you can see how talented they are at multi-tasking with hands and feet. It's mandatory viewing for Rush Reactors. Cheers
Good call in reading the lyrics! Neil Peart was an amazing lyric writer - and book writer as well - so that’s a huge benefit for those just discovering Rush! Now, there are certain song which you still want to read the lyrics but you should watch the video for the visuals first. Seeing the band play their instruments is also one of the most awesome things about Rush. So, they have the trifecta: great musicianship, great songs/lyrics and great performance/showmanship abilities!
Rush is a deep rabbit hole to explore! I'm part of Generation X and I was raised on the lyrics to this band, mainly by the drummer, Neil Peart. Freewill is about taking responsibility for your actions and creating opportunities for yourself. At one point Neil credited Ayn Rand, which lends credit to the lyrics in this song, Tom Sawyer, New World Man and others that are talking about not committing to any one philosophy, keeping an open mind, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, you sense of identity and owning your actions. In the opening narration of "The Necromancer" Neil writes about a Lord of The Rings segment but he mentions three travelers, men of Willow Dale, and Willow Dale is the suburb of Toronto where they're from, but when I was a kid and I read those lyrics on the album while my brother practiced the drums the words hit me like a ton of bricks! We had lost our grandfather not long before this and the narration talks about the Eye of Sauron which he called "The Necromancer" and he goes on to say, "weakening the body and saddening the heart. Ultimately they will become empty, mindless spectres. Stripped of will and soul. Only a thirst for freedom gives them hunger for vengeance…" and that was the first time I realized there was something worse than death; the loss of freedom and freewill! I had read the trilogy of LoTR but it just seemed like a fantasy book series to me, it wasn't what I was into. The way Neil wrote about it though opened my mind to another level of thinking! The song "The Trees" is still relevant today as are many of the message like "Territories" and "Big Money", but "2112" is a tribute to music set in a dystopian future and it's so brilliant in so many ways! Keep exploring and Happy New Year!
You actions to Neil Peart's drumming is hilarious. Try watching his solo live from Frankfurt Germany or any of his solo's. You'll find your jaw on the ground afterwards. And may I suggest Working Man live in Cleveland. Pure kick ass. You really need to watch these three men live.
You got it . Yes it is about the choices u make and not blaming them on everyone, being free and doing things for yourself. Good example is 2112 after Caress of Steel didn't do well ,they did what they wanted and bought their freedom to express themselves in their on way . That is what I always got from this song and I think that is what Neil was getting at .So that being said I think it's time for the 20 min opus 2112 ,3 masters at work. Awesome reaction stay safe
Now, all you have to do is listen to it 10,000 times more, and you’ll get it 😎 I’ve listened to it at least that many times, and it still blows me away… 🤟🏻
Love your commentary in these reactions! You are spot on about how rare it is for the bassist to also be the lead singer as well. It must be very difficult to do both lead and rhythm at the same time. RUSH has so many great songs that you will want to react to. May I suggest "Working Man" from their 1st album, which features the bands' original drummer, John Rutsey. He was also an excellent drummer IMO, but was replaced by Neil Peart after their debut album due to health issues. THANKS!☮
To try to take in the solo section in one listen is impossible. There are so many interesting things going on with each instrument. It'll take about a half dozen listens to focus on each instrument and fully appreciate what each player is doing.
Couldn't agree more!! While I'm editing I feel like I had not commented enough about one instrument playing because I was focused on another thing.. so much things to take in!! To fully appreciate their great work it takes a few listens indeed!!
Try workingman live Cleveland this is one of the few live ones to watch great quality, Also see how three guys in their 50s end a three hour concert fullly rocking it out building with transitions , you will not be disappointed
You still have to go back for Tom Sawyer also! There really isn't a song you can pick that is bad, but each decade definitely has a different sound but all sounds like RUSH and all are good. Where you might get opinions from us, is which version we believe is best. Like YYZ, probably 99% of will say watch live in Rio, Working Man live in Cleveland, or La Villa Strangiato official video. You honestly can't go wrong but we know you will get something from these specific versions. Working Man in Cleveland is completely different and i personally prefer this version because it's how i see the evolution of this band. All their lyrics have a message and you nail it so great reaction. Natural Science is my personal favorite and would recommend the lyric video as it is a deep song and believe me, with this song, the lyrics will go straight over your head because the musicianship is insane on this one. Other great songs Leave that thing Alone, Between the Wheels, Fly By Night, Spirit of Radio, Seven Cities of Gold, Far Cry, Time Stand Still, Subdivisions, Bravado, The Pass, and on and on and on.... Seriously the list is endless. ...almost
Haha.. indeed I cannot focus on many things at a time if i focus on lyrics i forget to enjoy the instrumental!! but i try to do both 😁 It really takes multiple listens to fully appreciate their mastery!! Cant wait to check all of these songs!!!
