@@RushAss Though truncated, even 2112 is better on ATWAS. I don't like Bastille or Lakeside much off the studio album, but love 'em off the live album. All the songs are just plain better on ATWAS.
it's funny what grabs you about a song. Like Geddy playing the high D when Alex first starts playing electric guitar after the acoustic intro. Always loved this track.
This is another of the holdover songs from the 1st record, or at least a song Geddy wrote the lyrics for. The live version of this song is so great, nice chunky riffs. Maybe part of this song was in a mashup in one of the live videos you did of later Rush?
I've always enjoyed this song. I really like Geddy's vocals even if the lyrics aren't complicated or sophisticated. You'll find out what Caress of Steel is like. Awesome album IMO.
Next, the album that almost ended their career, but to rush fans, still AWESOME! Critics hated it, and the record company was going to drop them if they didn't make more "radio friendly " music....then came 2112. Rush's middle finger to the record companies, and it EXPLODED their career! The song 2112 was an analogy of this. Oh, btw...All The World's A Stage!!!!!! Lol!
Another cool song from this album that I missed out on hearing them play live. Along with Beneath, Between & Behind, In the End was last played live in 1981. Saw my first Rush concert in 1983.
This record shows the band’s potential. You can hear the influence of Neil and there were some ‘leftover’ songs from early Rush. You see why the label got excited about them. You can also hear the foundational elements that would become what we know as Rush. thanks for taking this journey.
I'm interested to see how Caress of Steel hits you. It's more progressive. Really fits nicely with their progression from the debut, to Fly By Night, and leads into 2112. The band members have often said there would have been no 2112 without Caress of Steel.
So …I always just comment “Thank You for doing this”. And I love your opinion…agree or disagree. Undertaking this Rush thing is big…no one finishes. It’s frustrating because there are gems, wtf diamonds in each and every album. Especially the later ones. Thanks for your commitment to the greatest 3 piece orchestra. Lol. Cheers
So refreshing to see a no bs real reaction. This is what made me want to play rock and roll music as a kid. I cut my teeth on playing along to big band music on a 1963 Gretsch champagne sparkle jazz drum kit. I grew up on a ton of big band jazz and early pop music until I heard alternate AM stations and later FM! Bands like Black Sabbath and The Mighty Led Zeppelin became the sound of choice in my circle of friends. It wasn’t till one afternoon listening to Sweet Desolation Blvd at my childhood buddies house that we decided to break the law by thumbing through big sister stack of vinyl on top of the old Omega 3way speakers. Happily thumbing past Mott The Hoople, REO, The Tubes… THERE IT WAS!! The owl cover art! ….”ooooooo ..let’s put this on” I remember saying. “Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind - A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind- We marvel after those who sought - New wonders in the world they wrought.. You are on quite the trip if you follow through the catalog. Some of the mid 80s stuff isn’t my thing. Too much keyboard saturation. Synths for rhythm instruments. Blah. Still I have to applaud the guys for doing it THEIR way. Rush is one of those bands that draws you in and captivates you. Their music forces you to open your brain. From virtuoso performance after performance, studio and live, the music of Rush penetrates and holds onto you. I have been a huge fan of these 3 guys for 47 years and counting. RIP Neil Peart, my secret sansei and root of inspiration. A humble and lovely man. You left us so early. I’m here for this bud.
These songs are so much better on their live album, All The World's A Stage from 1976. I think I once read Alex state the live album was more representative of their sound. I guess producers have to produce sound and make it fancy. What gets me now that I'm older is that Rush is recording two albums per year writing the songs on the road in the back of a station wagon...they wrote the songs for the first few albums on acoustic guitar on the road. By Tor and the Snowdog live from All The World's A Stage is a treat! BTW, you aren't gonna like the first three songs on Caress of Steel but the rest of the album is good.
This is one I really like as well. A blend of old and new on this album. Caress of Steel will have a much different vibe, one their record company will absolutely hate. Cheers
I kind of wonder if "In the End" is a direction that Rush could have gone if they were more pliable with their record company. They probably could have been pretty successful in the 70s if they had, but we'd all talk about their songs the way we talk about Bad Company or Cheap Trick: good bands for their time. Instead, they went in a different direction and we got Cygnus X-1, La Villa Strangiato, and Tom Sawyer.
I like the whole album but the three you liked are my three favorites on here. I kinda knew you would like my three favorites and not so much of the rest of the album. Again I’m a little more married to the album as I heard it fresh. And I made many memories to it. But through the years I skip through songs on their albums. I still listen to Rivendell every now and then. The one thing I hear you touch on is the recording and their musicianship which may be another reason they stand apart even when the songs aren’t that strong. I still appreciate the talent.
This is the album where it starts to feel like rush.. thank you Neil peart. No disrespect to John rutsey who was a fine rock and roll drummer... but you needed that third element of the trifecta for the band to blossom into what they would become
Maybe you were thinking of "The garden" from their clock work angels tour you had watched??. That had acoustic in it. Thats what I heard in the beginning. But shit some things just sound "familiar" lol
This has been on the radio, but not in quite a few year. I think you’ve listened to “Best Intro Ever” and this is part of that 6 song medley. This is a good one! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
A decent closer of a band finding its new voice. As far as where the title of the next album, it could be a reference to "Bastille Day" and/or "Lakeside Park": the former being about the guillotine, and the latter about a park in St. Catharines, Ontario (part of Greater Toronto Area's auto/steel industry)--though this might be a bit of a stretch.
Geddy wrote the lyrics to this one. I believe the only one of them that were married at this point was Alex. I know he had a son at 17 years old, but wasn't married at that time.
Yes, this really is a MUCH better album than the debut, even though it’s still a bit uneven. I’ve always really liked “In the End”. I think you’ll find CoS is also kind of a mixed bag. Their ambition exceeded their abilities, I think, but a lot of really good stuff on it, too. Paves the way for 2112, FTK and Hemispheres. Looking forward to the next set of videos.
Caress of Steel next, not my favorite album but a couple real long songs be Intesting your take on it. Rush themselves called it an experimental album. Look forward to it...
So true how this album is so much better then the first, but without the first there would be no last....Caress of Steel...hmm a pretty dark album and progressive for sure. One comical song for sure, guess you can call it an album song, but please keep an open mind about this album. Neil was exploring his fascination with Sci-fi (Thats what I have read). Without this album there would be no 2112. Look forward to your reactions.
I am not much of a Rush fan, I can't really say why.. For whatever reason I just cant get into it. I know plenty of people who love Rush. They have put a ton of material and there is no denying that Rush is very talented.
I believe on That Metal Show they asked Geddy to put all the Rush albums in order from his most favorite to his least favorite and I think Fly By Night was his least favorite. I think he had fond memories of the first record because it was the first one but FBN was one where they really could hear how young and naive they were. You said that you thought it would have been cool for them to start with this record but Neil has said he wished their first record was 2112. I love these records but I guess they felt they were still learning.
This album is an interesting mixture of old and new. It makes sense that they ended the album with an older style track that they probably thought would work well live. This song has never done anything for me (Kiss would probably have done a better job with it,) but I'm guessing it went over well with Rush's early followers.
@@scottnewton9060 only good song is working man which is a total smash performance. Rest i can leave. I know others are cool with Finding my way its alright. Too much zeppelin rip for me on the album.
I always liked this song--even if it was pre-Neil and not really a "Rush" song in the way we tend to think of it. The version on "All the World's a Stage" is better (IMHO), as it has a wider range of dynamics and just that great live energy. Maybe in some ways it was the magnum opus of the "first" Rush--I think that Rutsey could have played on it instead of Neil and lost very little compared to the final version, whereas, the "first" Rush could never have come up with "Anthem", "Beneath, Behind & Between", "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", or even "Fly By Night". BTW, great job on the reviews! I've heard all of these songs an uncountable number of times over the decades, so it is really cool to hear someone's opinions on them--especially the songs that no one ever talks about any more. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on "Caress of Steel", as it is such a distinct and unique album in their development.
Not a bad way to end the album. Not as strong as Working Man on the debut. Thanks so much for working through this record. You can see some development occurring. Caress of Steel is going to change things up again. There are some polarizing of songs on that album. Neil gets way into some fantasy story telling.

That bass groove though... ; p

This was a great tune live, very popular on the early tours! thanks
Geddy's lyrics on this tune
They slip this song in the middle of many of their encore medleys same as ‘In the mood’. Good chance you heard it before.
Caress of Steel up next…now we’re getting somewhere!
I like the live version from “All the worlds a stage” better
One two… buckle my shoe
My favorite part of the concert

I was thinking this EXACT SAME THING yesterday. LOL
Caress of Steel is my FAVORITE Rush album!
I love this tune as a deep cut. The acoustic intro is so beautiful. I feel like I need 6 fingers to play that B chord. Alex always plays so big.

No it isn't - the R30 intro is Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, Passage to Bangkok, Cygnus X-1 Book I and II.

I think it's a play on words which they are apt to do.. caress is something soft and tender, steel is strong and rigid.
Please do the live albums also. Very raw. No layered guitars
Some of these songs that didn't seem so great on the albums were awesome live. Definitely don't skip the live albums.
Like this one, and agree that the All The World's a Stage hits harder
Similar chord structure to Fly By Night
5:00 Definitely something Soundgarden-ish about this riff.
