Guys, you are right, Firth Of Fifth is, arguably, the best Gabriel-era Genesis song as it has everything they were all about at that time. Hackett is the only one out there flying the Gabriel-era Genesis flag so be sure to catch him live. I've seen him a few times and the shows were mesmerizing and you really get to see what a master Hackett is. Nice pick guys!

This is THE best guitar solo ever. Ive seen The Musical Box many times, and this masterpiece is always the best part of the show. Ive seen Steve Hackett live too, and it was so good. I really like that he plays the solo close to the original. How can you play better than perfection anyway!!

We are very fortunate that Steve is still touring and keeping this music alive in a live performance format, saw him recently for the fifth time in March and was happy to see many young people in the audience. Hopefully they will continue to listen to this music well into the future.

I was at the concert with my younger brother, who sadly passed from Cancer earlier this year. I highly recommend you listen to Suppers Ready from the same show. Possibly the best version of suppers ready ever recorded. Steve extends the closing section by several minutes, it is simply amazing. Shadow of the Hierophant was also incredible, the whole building shook with the bass pedals in the closing moments, sadly you just don’t get the same impact from the recording, you just had to be there.

No, Firth of Fifth is MY favorite!😊 I taught myself to play it on the piano 50 years ago and every time I saw a keyboard just had to perform it because every single time I did it transported me to a special spiritual place. I had the privilege of meeting Tony Banks around that time and thanked him personally for his masterpiece. Thanks for sharing this special performance---I so very rarely enjoy orchestral renditions of rock (unless its's already an integral part of the work as with Alan Parsons, for example) as it invariably ends up so very cheesy. Far from it in this case. The arrangement herw was exceptional, and I, too enjoyed the reed substtution for the flute. I saw Steve Hackett live way back when on the Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Morning tours, and he is a true artiste.

The "Supper's Ready" version they did is amazing. Better than the original, if it can be believed. Steve includes an awe-inspiring guitar solo at the end that was never in the studio track (probably because the rest of the band wouldn't allow it, lol).

Steve keeps the real spirit of Genesis alive. He always pays great tribute to his time with the band and his deep love of the music. His live shows are amazing, such a brilliant musician and gives it his all. If only Genesis had taken on more of his ideas and included more of his input in the records who knows what might have been. Steve always does collaborations with orchestras and choirs. You should also check out his collaboration with Todmobile live in Iceland, with amazing orchestra doing Supper's Ready it's just off the charts.

I watched Steve and the band perform "Selling England by the Pound" in its entirety ... the hall was packed with people who ... like me ... had listened to the album so many times over the years that we knew it intimately. You could tell that, as well as a lot of love in the room .. we were all listening intently and waiting for every little nuance to be honored, every cymbal hit, every arpeggio on the bass, every synth solo ... and as the final note sounded the whole place erupted, what a night.

This orchestra performance is brilliant, but I hope it's a training to Seconds Out reaction! I adore you! 😍😍😍

Heartfelt reaction to one of my fav Genesis songs. You can’t help feel the emotion this piece invokes. Have to add that Lex’s concert tee brings back memories from 1977. I was driving by Anaheim Stadium, heading south on the 57 freeway at dusk, just before the show started. Not sure if it was the Friday, or Saturday show. There was a very noticeable column of smoke rising from the entire stadium. I could see the pig balloon. Pink Floyd was known for their stunning live shows back then. Looks like someone modified it to the “flash dance” style with some handy scissor work. Oh, and of course you totally rock it.

I'm so glad you're giving Steve's band a try. I've seen him play a handful of times, and was lucky enough to meet him just before the pandemic hit. His meet and greet price used to be something like a $35 up charge to a standard ticket. They'd give you a signed poster and he'd sign something you brought too (plus a picture and brief chat). Very warm and friendly, and the idea that he was willing to listen to a line of people ask him about a reunion for $35 shows how grounded he is.

Yes! Another fab reaction! Soprano sax (a difficult instrument to play, apparently) replaced PG's flute. I too loved the extra power of the orchestra (AMAZINGLY well orchestrated, it supplemented but didn't dominate, and was wonderfully in-character) - also the fractionally slower tempo, allowing the majestic harmonies and progressions to shine even more, and actually giving more bounce and impetus to some sections (actually this is a little-known 'secret weapon' - sometimes try playing a song a bit slower, not faster). Thanks both! And please, Supper's Ready by Steve, band and orchestra!

Seen Steve live lots of times since 2009, in Paris each time. Met him personaly backstage after a show at Olympia and talked to him around 10 mn , with Amanda Lehmann too. Nice and humble guy.
You should do Supper's ready of course.
Then you should try Shadow of the Hierophant live too because it's a highlight of his solo stuff, from his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, which he did in 1975, with Sally Oldfield, his brother John and Phil and Mike (who co-wrote this song which was proposed for Foxtrot). Highly recommended.

@NicknLex It was a really great show. You're gonna LOVE it. The voice of Yes makes all the difference. To me, Jon still sounds as great as ever. I believe this was only the second show on the tour so far. As they play more, the band will gel more. So by the time they get to you they'll be more on point (but Jon was definitely already there). All in all, one of the better shows I've seen in past three years. As you would expect, 85% of the songs played were the big Yes hits. They really nailed "Close To The Edge". Show was 2 hours and 45 mins with a 20 minute intermission.

I saw Genesis live with Peter four times between '72 and '75 but never when Phil sang as I had moved to SA. This song (did I just call this a song?) needs to be celebrated and revered. The original is wonderful, Genesis played it beautifully live, and performances like this one honours a remarkable piece of music.

Great performance of a great song! I've never seen this version and I really enjoyed it.
This is also one of my favorite Genesis songs; however, I came to know and love it later in life. When Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, he freaked me out with his stage antics and makeup, me being only 14 at the time, but when I heard their music it sounded to me like I was sitting down for tea and crumpets with the Queen, it was so English manor-house sounding, and I've never been much of a royalist. I did like a couple of early Genesis songs, but it took a long time for me to really like their sound. Now, I do like ALL eras of Genesis, and I really love Gabriel's solo career.

Obviously a massive guitar feature in this song, but I strongly urge you to check out other Genesis Revisited work by Steve and his amazing band (the orchestra is interesting but inessential), and the reason is that because Genesis music is SO keyboard-led that it's easy to ignore the guitar in the classic canon; and while you might say that Steve's contribution was modest (in the emotional sense), when he's front and centre you come to realise just how important the guitar was to the overall sound picture. Supper's Ready is incredible, but any or all Genesis that Steve+band do is just eye-and-ear-openingly wonderful.

Hard core Genesis fan since 1973. Now 66 and the music still is inspirational. (At least from Duke and its predecessors.)

This is so gratifying. I lucked into a new copy of this best of albums, and this best of songs, when it was new, and the solo from Firth became my calling card, in the form of whistling, in stairwells, parking decks, or any place with good acoustics. Even now I still do it. That or "Sukiyaki", also great fun. Try it! But to see people a half century later still being blown away by it...gratifying indeed. I knew I had good tastes! :)

Nice version of a great song. A bit slower, but quite dramatic. Thanks for doing this version. Saw Steve Hackett about 8 months ago do Foxtrot (and a few encores), including this song. Just so good.

According to Banks, he initially wrote all of it for piano, but during a rehearsal they tried going 'full King Crimson' on it, with Hackett playing the 'flute' part at its peak, and it was a sound they couldn't ignore.

I've seen Genesis live and Steve Hackett many times. To be honest, I think I enjoyed listening to Steve live more, but only because the sound technology live bands use nowadays has moved on so much from the 70's which enables the music to sound so much closer to the original.

Oh, yes. I did see Steve in Austin back in April, Was awesome. You could do some stuff from Voyage of the Acolyte. Lots of good stuff on there. Or Spectral Mornings. Also, have you heard Jon (Andersen-- Yes) and Vangelis? Friends of Mr Cairo is one of my old favorites from my time))

That was a great gig and Steve is back at the Albert Hall, later this year. (I’ll be at the Manchester leg of the tour).
Have seen Musical Box, also, and they are great with the theatrics.
Most impressive other tribute band are The Watch, from Italy. I believe they are touring the US, this summer. Try to see them. They do a stunning version of ‘Firth of Fifth’.
Videod this in Manchester a few months ago.

I just love the way he adapts all the songs, but still keeps them sounding the same as the versions we all love. I have seen him do his solo songs, as well as his Genesis revisited concerts, and I must say as a very long standing Genesis fan. I perfer his concerts to the last couple of phill Collins Genesis concerts.

His concert with TODMOBILE is also epic and moving. This has a more metal vocalist. TODMOBILE also worked with JON ANDERSON. Both those concerts are extraordinary. I think from memory SUPPERS READY is good in that concert. Again a huge orchestra plus big backup singers. Hi fellow Libran Lex! I’m October 9 same day as Lennon. Have to say I’m slightly allergic to Nad - he yodels around the notes too much for my taste. This SHADOW OF THE HIEROPHANT has Steve Wilson regular NICK BEGGS on bass pedals plus an EXTRAORDINARY piece of drumming from GARY O’TOOLE! This is mind blowing - the greatest Genesis song never recorded by Genesis - this is intense …. Buckle up - I promise your jaws will drop at the end! ruclips.net/video/ZZPleiedgvo/видео.htmlsi=mALhErfQLkZvKegx. By the way this is the best version - the version with the orchestra actually buries the intensity on that track.
