Tip for zenithal, use the technique with the primers or undercoats. Black spraying upwards, gray straight on, and white from above. Then give it color coat.
As a mini-painter, Zenithal is supposed to be Black Base, Grey from 45 degrees and above, and white from straight about, to great hard lights, hard shadows, and soft shadows.
Awesome selection of tricks to make cool things even cooler! And I imagine they could be used to non-3d-printed props and projects as well! Thanks for sharing!
I've never painted a print but I know it's time to learn. This was a great intro. I guess I thought you had to be an airbrush artist to get these effects, so it looks like magic to me.
So Cool! Great meeting you the other day! Keep up the awesome work! Montana Gold (the purple you used) is AWESOME paint. Well worth the price! The stone came out so nice!
I have to say. Im not a big print finishing guy but damn you make it look so easy. This may be the inspiration I need to go a little deeper now that Im getting into resin prints too! Great vid dude.
@@UncleJessy to get that patina in the old days it really took a lot of work, this is really awesome I bet the death guard guys in Warhammer are going to be all over it.
I do the Zenithal starting from a black base then to light grey at a 45-degree angle then a pure white (lightly from above) with rattle cans - then few drops of Liquitex Acrylic Colored Inks in the air brush and once blasted with color it comes out vibrant and stunning and shaded to different tones of the ink color because of the three-stage zenithal. My personal favorite way of "Quick Coloring" - the metal effects for patina and rust look great though, gonna try to give that a shot next time I'm at a hobby lobby. Some new(ish) techniques I'm trying next is cheapo soft pastels from the dollar store in a coffee grinder to create "Pigment Dust" to weather prints. And while at the dollar store grab a "Kid Pack" of tiny assorted oil paint tubes - dilute with white spirit and make and oil wash that's 1000% better and easier to use than your traditional acrylic washes and in many more vibrant colors - splatter it everywhere and with a Q Tip dipped in pure white spirits just do a light cleaning on the areas you dont want it on and it come of clean without that "coffee staining" effect you get with acrylic washes. But if you still want to create tons and tons of custom colored washes check out "Black Magic Craft" on RUclips (king of DIY dioramas and RPG Terrain) he has a whole video on making bulk "Black Magic Craft Wash" that's a 95%accurate clone of the washes Game's Workshop makes but with the option of making them custom colors (like the light blues/greens for a patina effect wash) by using cheap cheap cheap materials all sourced from Hobby Lobby/Michael's/Dollar Store. I'd REALLY love a collaboration video with you two since he's started to get into 3d printing of large terrain buildings and terrain scatter items (dumpsters/shipping containers/etc) for his own game boards a year or so back
Thank you for the tips on paints Jessy. This was very informational. I am new in the printing community and have been loving your videos. You present information in a fun and easy to follow manner. Keep up the great work and look forward to more videos! Thanks
If you're 3D printing a Green Lantern figure, you could always do the shadow technique from the direction of the ring and the Lantern to give an actual glowing effect. Would make them look AMAZING.
I like the ease of these methods, i got introduced into 3D printing from painting table top miniatures, a lot more time consuming painting prints that way but also worth it
@@JadedEvol a great printer to start with is the Longer3D Orange 10 resin printer. It's really cheap at around $200 (less sometimes when on sale) and a bottle of resin will set you back about $20-$30 depending on the color or effect you want. It's not the best resin printer, especially considering it's an MSLA machine, but it definitely gets the job done when you take the necessary safety precautions and maximize the small build plate's potential. You can get some really good, clean prints from it for relatively cheap. It's a good bridge between not having any kind of resin printer or using an FDM machine and buying something like an Elegoo or Anycubic machine
That purple version of the busy looks great. If that is Montana Gold paint(?), it is really good stuff. A long time favorite of graphitos all over. Zenithal really elevates most pieces. Great video. Yeah thats Montana Gold and was my first time splurging on a can and was really happy with it. Oh and thanks for those recommendations! Will for sure check those out to try and up my painting game
Ayyy I saw you filming with Joe D. I've been friends (family) with his brother and him for 20 years. They got some cool stuff at the office. Can't wait to see the video of your trip
this has been brilliant and helping me to paint my 3d printed figures to sell, as they are not selling in the grey. The gold brand spray paint what is the equivalent in the UK?
When I was into Warhammer there is a paint that is specifically made for where shadows would land. It is a slighty transparent black. Do your final coat then run a brush around the edges.
Love your videos Uncle Jessy. Hard to enjoy as much after buying a Mars 2 based on your recommendation and it being a total lemon. But still thanks for all the great content
That's it! Imma rub'n'buff my soon 3D printed interior door handle kits and then get some matte protection spray on them so I don't need to print them all over again once a month haha. Truth be told those doors are ALWAYS open and I almost never use the handles so keep calm everybody. Great video btw !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question. I need a 3d print with 2 block colours, black and white. What would look better? Using black resin, and white resin?, or spray painting black and white from cans..
Here in Florida I gave up on regular primers and just use a satin paint. Less fuzzy and your following layers of paint don't end up with the bottom layer bleeding in. I did a couple Cthulhu buddhas, one with black primer, one with black satin paint, and the one with the primer dulled out later gold paint so fast as it dried and multiple layers did not help. The one with satin spray paint held it's color and adhered very well.
Just wanted to chime in.. for spraying, Montana colors spray paint (graffiti paint) sticks to literally any surface with nice deep coverage without needing a primer base, not to mention the HUGE range of colors and spray cap choices. I find that using their paint for painting really anything other than graffiti, works really well to save a little time and money.
Was your dad impressed with your 3D works of art? The Mars 2 pro seems to be a great printer. I was able to get the earl bird preorder for Mars 3. Definitely a very useful video some great paint effects. And another awesome video as always.
Yeah I have been showing him the prints and the painting results with each one I’ve been working on. He’s been really enjoying seeing how they all work
Killer vid. Never heard of rub n buff but it's exactly what I needed for the project I'm on. Hope its ok on fdm. One day I'll get my hands on a resin printer. They seem to come out so smooth! Any recommendations on primer for fdm?
I have been thinking about this for a while and thought it would be a lot harder. I'll definitely be using some of the metal techniques. Can't wait to get some displays done.
Not really. 3d Resin is made to be cured by sunlight in very thin layers. Poor resin cures because of a chemical reaction between the two different components. Hope this helps.
@@randallbourque1321 I am still capable of doing uv deep pours with out a mkept mix ins... just curious as I do not have 3d design in my art skillet yet.. and I do hand sculpting casts.. is there a cheaper form of uv capable translucent silicone.
