- What's up y'all PowerButtonGaming here and this is my playthrough of the boss fight versus Master Eraqus . There are no special parameters that have to be met in order to fight Master Eraqus, all you have to do is progress through Terra's story. This video also showcases my preferred set of Items and abilities, as well as combos that made it possible for me to defeat my own master

Master Eraqus was awesome but he presented one important lesson in the Kingdom Heart series. Being on the side of Light doesn't mean you are going to be a good guy. Look at Eraqus. He was a fanatic who believed Darkness needed to be destroyed, and ended up trying to kill his own students as a result. Darkness consumes, but the Light can blind you. It's better to follow Riku's path. A way that uses Light and Dark in balance. The path to Dawn.

Never understood why people claim Terra killed Eraqus. Don’t get me wrong, he gave the old man a beating, but the final blow was clearly delivered to Eraqus’ back by Xehanort himself.

You want to hear something funny? When I first saw this scene, seeing him die after saying “My own heart is darkness!”, and how he went down after that, and seeing the dark plume burst from him before he faded? I thought that what finally killed him was that realization, the realization that darkness exists in him, too. That it…well, broke his heart and ended his life. Hmm.

something that makes BBS one of the best games is we see many firsts. one of them is seeing someone being corrupted by light.
It also shows xeanorth knowns light is equally as evil alone , without a balance one currupts you into something like a heartless or it blinds your judgment and makes you do inmoral decision

Not to mention that Eraqus's dislike of the stuff is far from unjustified; its history includes multiple kinds of World-destroying monsters, countless screwed-over innocents along with their homes, etc.

three friends misled into darkness losing all including their master. How dark can you get in BBS. Kh 2 made me cry because they all made it, Bbs made me cry because they all faded away. Even though they kind of reincarnated in Sora, riku and kairi. Besides the scene with terra and riku was really touching.
Mark hamil did a amazing job voicing Eraqus. Battle screams and all. The emotion captured in words like when he says "fail" in his attempt to reach terra.
He Has that samurai look and feel to him.

Well actually at the end he was hit in the back by a shot from Xehanort. That's what that blast of darkness was to his back.

Also Xehanort never wanted to kill Eraqus just to keep him out of his way, and after his fight with Terra Eraqus couldn't get in his way.

Most annoying part of this battle is that he is resistant to dark damage. You actually want to avoid using the Dark Impulse Style, but the game cannot stop giving it to you.
says hes resistant to dark damage but Xehanort blasts him with 3 dark orbs to calm him down and 1 to kill him

@John Mayfield Super late but yep, not only in strategy guides but also in the games files, Eraqus purposfully has more resistance to dark than any other element, so you really wanna get out of Dark Impulse ASAP when the fight starts cause you're neutered until then.
I used dark impulse to kill him want proof?
This is late but by story they give you dark impulse and nothing you do while fighting him will change that no firestorm no diamond dust no thunderbolt no blade charge no rock breaker and no critical impact

Also, took me two tries to beat. Actually, most of Terra's boss fights took two tries to beat. The ENEMIES starting out, on the other hand...

Seeing Eraqus apologize to the three of them was so heartfelt. Especially Terra. His apology came in the form of not trusting Terra before. But now he can leave Terra to protect Aqua and Ventus.

Mark Hamil and Leonard Nimoy are in this game, holy shit that means Luke Skywalker and Spok are a part of Kingdom Hearts, damn that means that this is quite a prestigious game then, most impressive. This game also brings lots of good memories for me, very nostalgic, I can't believe that it's already been so long. This game is especially interesting because it has more serious themes.

Well, they were all trained at a young age to hate the darkness and love the light, no exceptions. And when things don't go their way they blame the darkness and not their own shortcomings. As far as Riku is concerned, I view him as no different than the rest.

Terra is such a loving student and after he fought master eraqus,he noticed that he did something wrong.But in the end Freaking Xehanort steals Terra's heart but Riku can handle it! I cant believe it!!! oh yeah..

Eraques was truly blinded by the light he holds so high. Willing to kill both of his students, his own sons as he sees them, to keep this 'balance'. Darkness is scary, for sure and can even be corrupting. But like light, its a tool that can be used if used wisely. You just have to be stronger then it, not give in. He did see his errors at the end, realizing what horror he had done and even scarring Ven for life. Then old man Xehanort came in and just killed him
Light and Darkness are both good in moderation. Enough Light is Empathy, enough Darkness is Self-care. Too much darkness is selfish villainy, and too much light is discrimatory needs of the many mentality.

Hrm, it seems if Xehanort can be said to be one who has been consumed by darkness, does that make Eraqus one who has been blinded by light? It seems odd that the majority of the KH enterprise has never considered the idea of balance. Ventus of Light, Aqua of Light, Terra of Dark....even Sora seems determined to be Light, yet we see that Riku, the ONLY person who has accepted the ideal of Balance, seems to have surpassed him entirely.
Why is it such a hard concept for anyone in the KH-verse to accept that balance can be achieved?

riku found a balance, that is true, but his was a special case.
darkness has a tendency to warp and distort things beyond what they're ment to be.
Riku found an immunity to darkness after being possessed by it and being one of the rare people to survive it intact. I bet Aqua, a former Light, might have found the balance during her time in the RoD maybe? Who knows.

well eraqus probably believes that ever thing must have a zero tolerance darkness policy rule. but when he appies that it only aggravates more darkness just look at the case with Terra and his mark of Mastery.
vc180191 correction. Ventus himself had the ability to wield the power of light and dark so he would eventually wield the x blade. However he was not able to embrace it which is why eraqus took all the darkness out of ventus to make vanitas as an easier to way to forge the x blade. Ventus had the power to be what Riku is. One who wields light and darkness. Except he would actually be able to surpass riku because once he learned to control light and darkness he would also be able x blade making him basically the ultimate keyblade master. The only reason ventus has this light is because he is literally pure light. There is 0% darkness inside ventus while his opposite half vanitas is pure darkness and 0% light. If ventus wasn't split into him and vanitas he would be getting the some dark pulses of energy that terra gets.

This is actually a really sad fight, because Eraqus lost pretty much was his own son the same way he lost his best friend Xehanort to the darkness. Eraqus was in a lot of pain.
He actually lost Terra due to his fanatic devotion to the Light. In trying to purge the Darkness, he decided to kill Ventus, one of the only people Terra deeply cared about.
I’ve noticed Mark Hamil is a terrible father figure and teacher.

Seriously, am I the only one who feels bad for Eraqus? Deep down he cared about Aqua, Ven and Terra like they were his own children, I mean I know his viewpoint on Light and Darkness is literally black and white, but c'mon, he's never seen darkness being used for good before, so I can't blame him for wanting to safeguard the light as much as he does. Also, he didn't want to kill Ven, but knew he wanted to prevent the X-blade from being forged, hence why he was willing to carry out his assassination attempt despite fearing he would lose one of his pupils. I know people are gonna point out Riku, but that was Chain of Memories, 1 decade after the events of Birth By Sleep. He was just trying to teach Terra a lesson about not being power hungry, because that can strengthen his darkness. If anything, it's Terra's fault for relying to heavily on a power he doesn't understand and turning to Xehanort just because "he knows about the darkness." Terra was too whiny and arrogant just because he failed the Mark of Mastery for displaying a little bit darkness, just because of how competitive he was. He's one of my favorites and I would gladly be his apprentice if I had a Keyblade

eraqus was a fool. A kind man but a fool he never wanted balance to much light can blind you. look at aqua she nearly went down the same path. hell erequs was the one responsible for xhanort's plan in the first place
No he failed him because he showed a bit of darkness. And Terra wouldn't had turned to Xehanort if Eraqus actually trusted him. People aren't going to trust you if you don't trust them back. And trying to destroy darkness all together is extreme by all means.

And even then -- just before dying(?), he finally wised up and used his Heart to give Terra offscreen backup against Xehanort's possession.

Eraqus held the Idiot Ball because the narrative wanted it easier for Xehanort to corrupt Terra; Luke held the IB because the narrative wanted it easier for Snoke to corrupt Kylo.
AntiVillain1 Snoke didn't corrupt Kylo. That's the difference between Kylo and Anakin. Kylo voluntarily chose to follow the footsteps of his grandfather. Anakin was just a pawn in Palpatine's game.

This has never made sense to me. Is it a dark desire to protect those you love?
Remember in the beginning of Terra's story? Where Master Eraqus criticized Terra's obsession with power and that he must not be afraid of losing? "Fear leads to obsession with power, and obsession beckons the darkness." The same thing happened here, when Terra feared Eraqus' power, and so he called upon the power of darkness.
It's not that protect Ven was a dark idea, it was the he allowed himself to use the darkness as power to fight Eraqus, which led to him losing control.

@@Licht_Umbra literally timestamped. I’m not trying to say its 100% explicitly how Eraqus entered it, nor would I expect this to be planned out over a decade in advance. It was more of an appraisal how creative of a writer Nomura is.
I think it was already explained at the end of this same game that Eraqus's heart is inside Terra, basically helping him "fighting" Xehanort's heart, all while the Terranort on the outside is suffering of amnesia
This fight took me a few days in critical mode, I was so under leveled and relied purely on shotlocks

Am I the only one that thinks that it wasn't the fight with terra that killed Eraqus it was either xehanort or vanitas if you look closely terra wasn't even close to him. Not to mention if you look to his side when he is struck yes struck you can see dark particle effects as if he was hit from behind with a move with dark origins like s slash or a energy blast.

Terra tells Aqua he was tricked into helping Xehanort kill Eraqus. Terra hurt him to save Ventus, but Xehanort dealt the killing blow.
yeah i know it looks like eraqus was hit by a dark blast from behind but i read somewhere that xehanort actually *_impaled_* him from behind. i've yet to find any pics of this alleged impaling so dark blast i say
Wasnt that obvious xD...? Guy fights, him and Terra stop. Terra is emotional. And the bam from behind and Xehanorty appears. Though Terra blames himself.

maybe he changed eyecolor because it went to the point of him not only being a lightcharacter like the blue eyes but even blinded by it to the extreme.....or he might have contacts xD
When you used Dark Haze to end Eraqus you feel enjoyed that you killed him cause how much he beats our asses but we just realize he was teaching us a lesson

Unlike Xehanort, he doesn't need everyone else to hold the Idiot Ball so he can look like the best racer (he's already way ahead before his self-destructive compulsion to cheat kicks in), and at least everything's not railroaded and retconned over and over just to make him look more effective than he really is.

When I was fighting Eraqus I lost to him like I think 3 times or more. And I defeated him like less than a minute! I only healed once. Well too bad I didn't record because I never record!

Eraqus is such a cool dude.
I don't blame him for being so Darkness-averse (the forces of Darkness themselves certainly haven't helped their case); IMO, his real flaw is his irrationality.
But other than that? Yeah, cool dude -- especially after what Blank Points reveals about him.
This game can be pretty damn dark at times, especially by Kingdom Hearts standards. But I still really love it.
And while Terra did help to kill Eraqus, he was only trying to protect Ventus and didn’t mean for any of this to happen. While Aqua’s fate is truly awful, so is Terra’s… 😢Xehanort manages to manipulate him by using common abuse tactics. He basically grooms the guy in order to gain his trust before subjecting him to his fate. It’s some pretty dark stuff in my opinion.
I like that you fought him with darkness based commands. I like your video of this fight best, because you make it a spectacle to watch, playing well into the cutscene.

You know, everyone defends Eraqus, but all I see when I look at him, is anime Frollo. They're pretty much the same, only difference is in their Quasimodos.
Van Oskuro not really. While Eraqus did indeed make a mistake, the fact of the matter is he was thinking of the greater good. i.e. second keyblade war.

If anything, Xehanort is the real "anime Frollo"; at least Eraqus has empathy despite his bad decision-making and would rather not screw over the whole universe/multiverse/whatever just to prove himself right.

@@PBG Oh well actually it's just that I think we understand better why he did what he did and why he is like this, I'm going to explain why so yeah BIG spoiler :
- First of all in Dark Road, Eraqus is kinda like Sora (even worse in my opinion), funny and all his friends (Xehanort included) makes fun of him (but lightly, just like when Riku thinks Sora is an idiot), so, of course he is much older here so the age can change him but I think this is sad to see how serious he became when he wasn't like that at all when he was younger.
- We also learn that he always had his vision : darkness bad light good, which makes what happened more tragic because it doesn't change that view, it make it worse.
- So about what in Dark Road : Xehanort and him were in a class with 5 other people.They are given the mission to find the seven upperclassmen who disappeared during their trip to their Mark of Mastery exam. Only one boy of Eraqus class don't go to that mission because apparently he was given "another mission". Long story short : 4 of the Upperclassmen (including the older sister of the boy who stayed behind) died and the other three want to open Kingdom Hearts to purge all the darkness. Xehanort and the others come back home not knowing what to do, then the boy, called Baldr finally shows up. We learn that he knows about the dead upperclassmen and his sister death. Again long story short : we realize at the end that he was overcome by darkness because the loss of his sister was too much for him and he kills all the other upperclassmen and all the remaining friends of Xehanort and Eraqus and we also learn that that Darkness also killed his sister and the three other missing upperclassmen. So in total, because of Darkness, he killed 11 people. Xehanort killed him at the end.
- So for me what makes that battle sad is that I think he is traumatized about what happened so when he saw Terra having darkness... He immediately think of the worst scenario and thought, like Xehanort at the time, that the best thing to do is to kill him. Plus at the end, Xehanort kills Eraqus which is sad because you can see in Dark Road that they were really good friends (even if they already had different opinions), it's like a traumatic event that you fear of happening again happening.
