Those bowls of com hến Huế and bún hến Huế most likely cost 20.000₫ or about $.86 USD each. Huế (where that scene was shot) has some of the best food in Viet Nam. I've been there many times and use to live 2.5 hours to the south in tp. Da Nang, also one of the great food cities of the world. BTW he wasn't kidding about the fish sauce. That wasn't the standard and mild nước mắm but mắm nêm that can double as paint stripper. Search YT for the video "My favorite dish | Summer Le" for a great intro to it.
Sudhir Kakar I grew up in France with french and khmere/vietnamese meals from my parents. They're all delicious and different on their own, don't know wich i prefer but I for sure can't leave without any of them :D
@Sudhir Kakar You know the french had cultural food influence in most asian countries like vietnam so saying it's better than the french... that's a double negative considering most of the recipes they used are from each other, and better yet evolved better.
He's spot on about Vietnam. If you love food, it's like going to heaven. Everywhere you look is food. Everything is laid back, everything is delicious, and your food dollar goes forever. His meal there was probably less than $4, including the beer.
Being a Vietnamese Canadian immigrant, I've always adored watching your show's and of course felt especially proud of my heritage when you visit Vietnam in your shows. It actually made me feel closer to my country of origin despite I didn't fly back home for my first time till 32 years later in search of family. Thank you for being so honest and authentic and showing cultural diversity to be so relatable to the rest of the world and an inspiration to myself and many others. May you find peace Mr. Anthony Bourdain.

I'm a returning veteran of the American War in Vietnam. I'm watching this from Quy Nhơn, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, after eating some delicious street food for dinner. The cinematography and editing do a great job of capturing the atmosphere in most Vietnamese towns, on any given evening. It's an experience that repeatedly makes my life worth living longer. I wish he were here to join me. "May His Memory Be Eternal!"
At the time he shot this, I was living just a couple kilometers away and visiting this very spot daily. Bun Bo Hue was also my favorite dish in the world and so much of this episode was just so surreal. I was going through a rough and lonely time and upon watching this i felt a bit less alone and definitely a connection with Anthony and the way he lived his life and treated others. I always admire the way he experienced life.
I miss Anthony Bourdain. He had such a creative way of describing food, places and his experiences. There will never be another one like him, ever. R.I.P. Anthony. 🙏🏼
I’ve lived and travelled in Asia for 10 years now. Vietnam I must say is an all time favourite. Vietnamese people are quite unique and their culture is too. But boy, the food Is fucking incredible and very rarely heavy. Anthony truly embraced other cultures and their cuisine, something few Americans care to venture into. May he rest in peace
I've fallen in love with Vietnam since I was 6. It was the first time when I saw the fascinating black and white photos of Vietnam War in a book on the floor of the library near my house. Anthony has considered Vietnam as one of his favorite places on earth, so have I.
I miss Anthony dearly. I left Vietnam in 1987 as a son of an American serviceman. I swore I would never come back to Vietnam but all that changed when I first saw an episode of A Cooks Tour show featured Anthony in Vietnam and the rest is history. I have been back to Vietnam many times and continue to visit every year and in the process of moving back for good. RIP Tony!
I can see now why he enjoys Vietnam. Not only because of the food, but also the environment. For some maybe seeking a life where its all luxurious or modern, there are people like him where the simplest things is more than enough. Although the place is considered abit of a hectic, but still simple (in the right perspective that is). Can consider a hidden gem. A huge respect for the man, and may he rest in peace
I miss this man a lot,I love travelling because of him,I love trying different dishes & drinks only because of him, what a travel magician he was, world will not get another anthony who can inspire people like me to explore the world ,culture & food .Rest in peace brother.
I come back to this video often ... it touches my heart and makes me wonder why I'm not there at the moment. As with Anthony, "I've been all over Vietnam, a place I feel a special connection to." I feel as though I could have written this word-for-word and my feelings are similar. Love my many months in Hanoi, Hue, DaNang, Hoi An, NhaTrang, Dalat, MuiNe, HCMC (Saigon), Soc Trang, Phu Quoc and elsewhere. Anthony's videos on VN are a sweet reminder of what VN offers, and they drive my desire to return. Cảm ơn Anthony (RIP).
Went to Vietnam with friends for a wedding, one friend met his wife there. It is one of the best places ever and we will remember it till we die. Bring some Imodium.
I know what he means now. Ever since I went to Korea, there's a certain feeling about being lost in another country, eating good food, and being around people who are almost nothing like you but also the same people born in a different place. It shows you how small you are but how you can enjoy life so much by looking back. You don't need to think, just feel and be free.
This was his speciality... He gave focus to the street food the stuff that the regular folks eat. Such an amazing storyteller and presenter. RIP Mr Bourdain.
Out of all the episodes I specifically remembered this line. I think he says it other times too. Basically happiness is a bowl of noodles in a hole in the wall experiencing and listening to the night life. He had such a good way with words. It made you want to be eating there at that moment away from chaos enjoying the simplest of things.
Tony was a great storyteller. Many of the things he said have stayed with me throughout the years ; not only in my brain , but in my heart . Tony ---- he had not only a spirit of adventure ; he carried a certain kind of wisdom around inside . Rest in peace , Tony !
