Those bowls of com hến Huế and bún hến Huế most likely cost 20.000₫ or about $.86 USD each. Huế (where that scene was shot) has some of the best food in Viet Nam. I've been there many times and use to live 2.5 hours to the south in tp. Da Nang, also one of the great food cities of the world. BTW he wasn't kidding about the fish sauce. That wasn't the standard and mild nước mắm but mắm nêm that can double as paint stripper. Search YT for the video "My favorite dish | Summer Le" for a great intro to it.

@Sudhir Kakar You know the french had cultural food influence in most asian countries like vietnam so saying it's better than the french... that's a double negative considering most of the recipes they used are from each other, and better yet evolved better.

At the time he shot this, I was living just a couple kilometers away and visiting this very spot daily. Bun Bo Hue was also my favorite dish in the world and so much of this episode was just so surreal. I always admire the way he experienced life.

I'm a returning veteran of the American War in Vietnam. I'm watching this from Quy Nhơn, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, after eating some delicious street food for dinner. The cinematography and editing do a great job of capturing the atmosphere in most Vietnamese towns, on any given evening. It's an experience that repeatedly makes my life worth living longer. I wish he were here to join me. "May His Memory Be Eternal!"

I can see now why he enjoys Vietnam. Not only because of the food, but also the environment. For some maybe seeking a life where its all luxurious or modern, there are people like him where the simplest things is more than enough. Although the place is considered abit of a hectic, but still simple (in the right perspective that is). Can consider a hidden gem. A huge respect for the man, and may he rest in peace

Ever since I went to Korea, there's a certain feeling about being lost in another country, eating good food, and being around people who are almost nothing like you but also the same people born in a different place. It shows you how small you are but how you can enjoy life so much by looking back. You don't need to think, just feel and be free.

I can see compassion and kindness in his eyes. As a 33 year-old Vietnamese, I can tell you the best regions and best people you can find in Vietnam are Da Nang province and the South of Vietnam.

He will certainly be missed. The atmosphere he creates, his conscious thoughts, tone of voice, mannerisms. Just the music and tone his shows created. They weren't just culinary shows they were culture studies into humanity. First class shows all the way

I think Bourdains struggle is the ultimate struggle of the romantic. Having spent such time romanticizing every tiny point of an experience, mostly food, but also life, its common the desire to seek beauty becomes broken from fatigue. The heart cant handle living life at this level without a very stable foundation at home.

Hello rest of the world. And thank you CNN for making our Vietnam so beloved. As a Vietnamese, I want to thank God for instilling in me a beloved life, I want to go around the world and say: Thank you for life!. With a unique culture in my red-blooded, yellow-skinned country, what do you guys think? I find it peaceful, beautiful like life in a dream. And I also hope CNN will find us again so that we can enjoy our unique culture and cuisine. No matter how short our human lives are, you should use the rest of your life for your joys and your far-fetched dreams. Our Vietnam can also be a place for your humour, your smiles and will gladly share that endless joy with the little sufferings in the distance. I hope the pandemic that is taking over the earth is Covid-19 to pass so we can be loved even more. May you find rest, Mr. Anthony Bourdain, Vietnam we follow your steps.

For anyone who wants to rethink their comment please take this seriously. For those of you who aren’t willing to see the other side just keep on your path. No harm in your view.
I enjoyed this as I did all of his work. There are two parts of a person...maybe more. His words in his lifelong work are something to take seriously and not to be brushed aside. I’ve seen many comments saying basically not to listen to this man because of how he died. I’m not here to judge that I’m here to say that although this man was experiencing a secret pain he was also enjoying life. I know many can’t comprehend that notion because they haven’t experienced it. But, I have. We all have different experiences with life and no one is as simple as they seem...no one.
This man was not a corporate puppet...or as some have suggested..someone who is fed lines regardless of his feelings. This is a man who wouldn’t have done this video if he wasn’t allowed to be 100% authentic.
Food can bring you joy, just as anything else. People who tell you otherwise don’t understand the pain of hunger. They don’t know what it’s like to have nothing to eat for days and then to finally have the ability to enjoy a meal.
Or, a person who is lonely and misses friends or family...and finally gets to sit down at a table and talk to them and enjoy a meal together.
There’s a difference between the person who treats people like crap just to stuff their face and a person enjoying their life and the blessing of having food on their table. Sleep, food, love and laughter. If you want to know what this man was about then you need to understand that at his core he was as simple as four words.
There’s a sadness to life that can’t be explained but there is also a beauty to life that people will never allow you to explain.
If you ignore wise words like his then you will miss a beautiful part of life.
