Still remember seeing Jon live in the UK at a jazz festival. Absolutely the loudest player I’ve ever heard and I’ve seen and played with a lot! His power and sound are off the scale!

And still nailing, though, I wish he played his own lick instead of Dizzy’s perfected version. He loved Dizzy so much that he always played some lick of his when he was soloing.

Pretty sure Faddis was playing like his hair was on fire. Now THAT is the way "A Night in Tunisha" should sound. WOW! as usual, his use of range and dynamics was amazing andf the whole band was cookin'. Terrific solos all around!

From what I've gathered, the actual musicians that played in this band didn't call it by its name, they just called it "Donny Dyess's band." There's something about all of the really good lead trumpet players in that they all seem to know each other or have at least played a gig with one another somewhere in time. My GUESS is that he just called up his buddies to come play with his band, which just happened to be world-class soloists and lead players
