    It was an awesome night, Bill Clinton and Will Smith were in the audience on the night!
    I was sitting at James's table with the top session trumpet players from Sydney and we were all blown away. JM had been away for a few weeks prior so went up on stage cold!

    What a highlight for Mr Morrison to be up there with the king. Maynard and the band really dug James's solo.....Wonderful moment!

    One evening, back in the dont know when of the 80s, I discovered a club in Sydney, Australia, called The Basement, and down in the basement, the great woodwind player, Don Burrows introduce a young trumpet player called James Morrison. He was still at school, I think, and after his first number, I, and the rest of the full house was awe struck.
    As I still am today, & March 2019.

    Boy, that brought a tear to my eye! James, I am so glad you got to record that moment. You get to have that treasure always. I KNOW you made Maynard happy knowing your musical voice would carry his legacy on!

    The undisputed master of the rolled in embouchure. I love that Maynard just sat back in the weeds, and let him wail. The Boss set the standard, nice to hear other guys following in his footsteps, and then taking it a few steps further. This is how we grow.

    How great is that? I had to be front-row also every time.. being a trumpet player in jazz band in high school and Junior High Maynard Ferguson was unquestionably my hero in the 1970s MF horn one and two are my most treasured and beloved albums. I still have my ticket stub from 1979 at Garden Grove High School in California $10, hearing a big band Live is something very special, hands down the greatest horn player I've ever seen. Maynard began to introduce a tune they were about to play by saying "this is a Sonny Rollins number.. " quickly from the front row I yelled out "Airegin !" Maynard answered back,," I see we've got some be-boppers in the audience tonight." I'm sure I was the only kid on my block who played air- trumpet to L-Dopa.

    Once again James Morrison proves he's world class and can hold his own in any company. Note the looks of respect on band members faces. James solo starts at around 6m15...

    Yeh the guy from around 4.30 to 5.00 really seems to struggle (looks like he's overblowing through a BIG aperture) ... when James plays = effortless mastery check out the flexibility and the efficiency of that embouchure! Crack a walnut with those lips!

    Why did Maynard "shake" every high note?

    • @philidor9657
      @philidor9657 3 года назад +3

      Cause he wanted to? He's literally one of the kings of trumpet he can do what he wants when he plays

    • @jamesroberts3642
      @jamesroberts3642 3 года назад +1

      @@philidor9657 Wow...Great answer man...Great answer. You sure told me. BTW...You said he "IS" one of the kings and he "CAN" do what ever he wants to do...Uh... You do realize that he passed away in 2006 (age 78), right? So what you said is 100 percent incorrect and wrong. Sad for everybody because he WAS a legend when it came to the bands he put togehter ( I saw him when I was a youngen in 2004).. And when Maynard was younger, he COULD do just about what he wanted to do...But when he was older, however, he could only do what he "wanted to do" so long as he ONLY wanted to play thin high notes and end them with a lip trill/shake ....So yeah....in his later years....well....I'll just say.......He wasn't a "Doc Severinsen". Doc, at 93 years old, doesn't have to put a trill on every note. But thanks again for your educational comment bud!!
      PS- Maynard is obviously a past legend and one of history's greats for a damn good reason. It's just that the reason mostly only involves his younger years when he was much more than just a toruing band leader who would squeek out a high note shake or two during performance.

    I was one of those trumpeters who grew up idolizing MF. But then after listening to players like Freddy Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Fats Navarro, Wynton Marsalis, etc., I realized the guy could do nothing but squeal - often out of tune, and couldn't improvise his way out of a wet paper bag. Thank God people like James Morrison and Wayne Bergeron have come along to be able to do it all!

    • @sandwichxiii
      @sandwichxiii 8 лет назад +7

      +Jon Lawry in recordings like this you are absolutely correct, but remember how hold Maynard is in this video... in his prime this guy was unstoppable, definitely deserving of the title "King of Trumpet"... Wayne Bergeron does it better now, but even his solos aren't as good as Maynard when he had youth in those lips
