    35:16 the fog whale oil and the aquaman bits had me dying. I still can't get over the casual delivery of the electrical line/fog whale oil rant. I know this is a tutorial level, but it is crazy how much wasted potential there is here (especially for the later game optional moons). It is mind boggling how much more creativity A Hat in Time had in the detective work department (which came out BEFORE Odyssey). Your comment about the controls making way more sense in AHiT than the awful motion controls here is spot on!

    Cappy seems alot like a kid type character and I can't imagine him having a son, tho since mario is I'm assuming a middle aged man , if cappy had a son and was more of a adult, it could be possible it could be a case of two men bonding on a long odyssey (and it'd be more intriguing if his sister was not his sister and actually his wife, to compare dynamically to the unmarried peach and mario)

    I actually find this review quite refreshing. Haven't played much of the game yet to be honest and really looking forward to it on a purely fun basis. But it seems crazy overrated and it is nice to see another side of looking at the game.

      It is most definitely crazy overrated, but, hey, you can still have fun with the game regardless! As I went over in Episode 0, what Nintendo did to mask the game's faults with its Reward System was smart, because people straight ignored everything about the design except for the Moon concept.
      Thanks for keeping an open mind and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

    I'd be very curious to see your dissection of new donk city whenever you get to it(I'd say it and probably cappy kingdom just design and look wise(aside from the flaws from both areas, I'd say they're probably the strongest part of the game along with maybe the final bowser fight)

      I'm currently working on a couple projects including the next Odyssey episode, so New Donk City is approaching in my upcoming videos!

    24:00 the game does technicly tell you moons aren't available.
    It's when Talkatoo and Hint Toad say "I cant give any kore hints"

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  5 лет назад +3

      The player wouldn't need to finally settle on asking Hint Toad as a last resort if the Moon list cared about the player's time in the first place. If the player doesn't use Hint Toad as a last resort but depends on it instead, then the Moon list wouldn't apply to them. So either way the design flaw is still present.

    I'm curious what you think of Yooka-Laylee? Despite its own flaws, one of many things I think it does better than Mario Odyssey is the world expansion mechanic. Like Odyssey's moon rocks, expanding worlds in YL doesn't really add significantly harder challenges to the world. However, unlike Odyssey, what you expand in YL is a totally new part of the levels so you aren't constantly going back to places you've already been. The player is forced to enter the unexpanded first world to be introduced to the expansion concept, but for the other worlds the game gives the option to expand and play on full sized world immediately, giving them options on how much they want to deal with at a time and reducing the need for as much backtracking. The only real downside is that the pre-expanded worlds in Yooka Laylee have the same collectible counter as the full-sized worlds and don't tell you when you've gotten everything possible in the smaller world (though to be fair Odyssey also doesn't let you get all pre-moon rock moons on the counter the first time through). What also helps Yooka-Laylee is that its major collectibles of Pagies feel a lot more valuable to find and get than Odyssey's many moons.

      This is really interesting, thanks for sharing! I haven't played Yooka-Laylee yet, but I've been curious. I've watched Oney Plays' short playthrough of it and I wasn't a big fan of some of the empty space and level design, but I still want to give it a chance, mostly because it might be an interesting comparison to Odyssey once I work on the next Odyssey videos.

      @@DesignFrameCaseStudies I recommend it, it's not trying to reinvent the collectathon and some of the design choices were kinda weird but it's still a decently fun experience especially if you like Banjo Kazooie (it's more fun to me than Odyssey at least). My favorite part is its cheeky British humor and the characterizations of Yooka and Laylee.
      Also, glad to see you still plan on eventually continuing the series, there's still quite a lot to go

      I have new videos in the works, but they've been put on the back burner for some time because I've been working on designing, developing, and publishing a board game. It shouldn't be very long before the next couple videos are released. Then I'd like to tackle the next Odyssey episode.

      @@DesignFrameCaseStudies That’s awesome dude. I’ve never been a board game guy, but my sister is into them. I’ll make sure to pass the word along whenever you finish it.

    17:49 these coins are possible with ledge grabbing

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  5 лет назад +3

      The game virtually never requires or even encourages ledge grabbing. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Snow Kingdom's Moon #12 sub-area.

    I'm with you with the overabundance of cheap moons, but asking why an electrical line would lead to a random island in Mario's fever dream of a universe, let me ask you this : why wouldn't it?

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  Год назад +2

      I'm unsure how I explained it in the video, probably not good enough 'cause I've improved my writing since then, but to me there were much better alternatives -- the flying hat-shaped airships (which were shown flying around at some point too), some kind of ocean transportation like a ship or blooper (which could lead into a really cool island exploration area instead of the Cascade Kingdom that we got), or otherwise some kind of vehicle or creature. To me, the electrical line is there because they used that capture elsewhere in the game and so they wanted to reuse it. The electrical lines can be used for short travel and make sense in many cases like the houses in the Sand Kingdom, but it feels so out of place in Cap Kingdom since it's used to travel across an entire ocean when better alternatives exist that could've also inspired the designers to create a better Cascade Kingdom (however, from a development standpoint, I understand the desire to reuse assets). I guess ultimately it's fine and inoffensive but it just doesn't seem to fit super well.

    well to be fair, the only mario games that are meant to have a good story and actual world-building are the rpgs

      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  Год назад +1

      True, it mostly serves the game's purposes very well, with a couple exceptions like the Broodals' role in the Lake Kingdom and such.

    Pretty sure a lot of your criticisms are actually just sarcasm(who seriously rips a Mario game over its worlds lack of continuity) but judging by the dislikes Im pretty sure most people took you seriously. People like me come watch these long form game reviews b/c we wanna hear people gush over games we love, especially for all-time great games like Odyssey. Im 10mins in but it feels like a third of that has been criticism which for Odyssey is not exactly gonna get you a lot of subs, its just not right. It annoyed me until I realized you were being sarcastic which, again, most people didnt.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  5 лет назад +8

      Most of my criticisms with the game are with the abhorrent use of Moons and the shallow implementation of Captures, which, I think, by itself, is most of the game. My continuity points are brief. Even still, I bring up my points about the world because so much more could have been done. Even if you want to consider what's there as good, it could have been better. Even if the beginning cutscene was good, that doesn't make it any more nonsensical.
      There are plenty of games I praise and gush about by giving them credit where credit's due while being fair. For everything that Odyssey does right, I will bring to light and will praise as such. For everything that Odyssey does wrong, I won't hide it because the game is popular. That's just silly and does no one any good.
      The dislikes are inevitable because this is Odyssey. That's the sole reason, and I'm fine with that, because I can defend my fairness and reasoning.

    • @rygesa
      @rygesa 5 лет назад +2

      oh whoops totally thought you were joking. I just wanted to tell you how I felt in case you were wondering why the like/dislike ratio is so poor since that ratio is really important to youtubers from what I understand. I sincerely doubt the dislikes are inevitable just cause its Odyssey unless you meant cause your criticizing the game more than basically everyone else who reviewed the game. Then ya that was inevitable.
      I didnt click dislike b/c the production value of the video was great and it showed a lot of potential for future videos and since there's never enough youtubers producing great long-form critiques of Nintendo games, I hope you can keep building your channel so that one day it produces enough $ to make it your fulltime job. Of course Im assuming that you want that and that the like/dislike ratio is important to youtubers, I could be wrong on both accounts.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  5 лет назад +4

      Yeah, I think the dislikes were inevitable because I'm criticizing Odyssey, but it's honestly not a big deal. Sure, it sucks and affects RUclips's awful algorithm, but people who have actually took the time to watch the series thus far have been understanding. So, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, I really appreciate it :)
      I do actually want to focus on this channel full-time. Thank you for your well wishes. I am excited for this series and I hope I don't disappoint with my other upcoming Nintendo (and non-Nintendo) plans!

      With Odyssey trying to focus on detail and worldbuilding, a sense of continuity (which it clearly tried to present in some parts, like going from Cap to Cascade Kingdom), a lacking sense of continuity over the adventure is pretty jarring and I feel a thing to criticise.
