  • Deltarune is just as character and story driven as ever, maybe even more so as we witness Ralsei and Susie’s character development in every single aspect of the game.
The Act System & Pacing excel at this, but there are issues we'll be hitting that may or may not be fixed for the upcoming full Deltarune release.

It's almost as if Toby Saw this video while making Chapter 2. The characters are much more fleshed out, even a bit on the old ones (King's dialogue in prison, the tutorial pieces with the dojo, Rouwghls Kaard's battle, etc.). Also, even though some battles still are very mindless, we have some more battles related to the story, like the time Noele learns how to Act.

That's great news! I haven't played Chapter 2 yet. One of my favorite aspects of Undertale is the pacifist enemy interactions and puzzles based off their personalities. Is that something that he's fixing or has fixed?

Oh, sorry for the spoilers 😅
Though it's totally worth it playing chapter 2, it's larger and is an enhancement of the chapter 1 in several aspects: more characters, lore, interactions, goofiness (lol), puzzles, a better main boss and even a better secret boss overall. The enemy encounters, though, isn't very good either.
Well, the enemies still have all right choices in the act button. It actually delved deeper into the act being just a fight button without the need of weapons, now with the spare meter next to the hp of an npc. To me the encounters early and mid game felt really forgettable, but it's wasn't annoying either because there weren't many. Though I liked the fights in the late game : they required strategy and fitted the chaotic tone of the "castle".
In that Battle aspect, one fangame I would appreciate if Toby got inspired by for future chapters is Deltatravelers. Most characters still have no wrong choice, but the encounters (especially in the Earthbound section) usually take more than two turns, so it feels very satisfying in a second run to optimize the encounters now knowing the better choices among various interactions.
I should also mention how I consider Deltarune more of a game than Undertale. Many common rpg tropes are present in UT to be twisted: leveling and grinding is evil (I guess murdering is bad, actually), the tutorial flower trying to kill you, the actual tuToriel overprotecting you, decent shops (sory Tem :( not buying anything from you. In contrast, DR takes a step back on the meta discussion on rpgs and save/load mechanics, it seems to be going for a more tridimensional story, ironic.
Sorry for dumping too many thoughts :P
Just, if you mind, some day, doing a chapter 2 review 👉👈

No need to apologize! Thanks for sharing the differences, this is fascinating. I'll keep this on my radar, I'd love to play it and make a video on it.

I find Deltarune to be an interesting enigma. I felt that Deltarune largely undermined its own act system because it removed the ability to change the world through your action. In Undertale, sparing everything meant something. Without its moral background the ability to spare enemies feel superfluous. I thought Deltarune experimented with some interesting ideas with its act system. I thought it was cool that players didn’t have control over Susie, and this had to act to make sure she didn’t kill anything. This ties in with the game’s theme that you don’t have control, but it also shows that there are things you can do despite the fact that you cannot control everything. I bet this is a theme that will be explored in future chapters but this just wild speculation from me. I just hope Toby can find a way to thematically intégrate the act system because the act system doesn’t work if it is optional and superfluous to the themes of the game. Deltarune’s act system exists because it was in Undertale, not because it is thematically relevant to the game’s themes.

i love deltarune to death but it's refreshing to hear a bit of measured, thoughtful critique that reminds me that it isnt perfect. i'd love to hear your thoughts on chapter 2. have you played it yet? it's free!

Thank you for the kind words :) I actually haven't played it yet. I want to, and then I'll probably make a Chapter 1 + 2 video. Unless Toby releases the chapters fast enough so the whole game is out.

It's good to see some geniune critique of the game besides the endless stream of praise. It's a good game but it's not perfect. I enjoyed the video, liked and subscribed.

Undertale was overrated as all hell, and this game will be way worse. Not a good game developer and this game play looks so boring... So much terrible dialogue and cringe yuck

I think Undertale is fantastic (from what I remember), but Deltarune seems like it doesn't carry the same design that made the first game so entertaining.

Undertale was slightly overrated I will agree, but beyond the writing flaws, it was still a nice game and a nice experience. You kind of seem weirdly obsessed with cringe culture.
I do agree that Deltarune ended up being worse, though-outright scrapping so much worldbuilding just to make up new worlds (which we then only see a tiny part of) cripples a lot of potential characterization. Susie, Ralsei, and Kris have to carry pretty much all of it, and introducing other characters (like Noelle) always ends up feeling extremely forced.
