- Welcome to the Nuss Collection Truck Museum!
Hi, I’m Bob Nuss. Today, I’m excited to share a truly unique item in our museum that you won’t find anywhere else: a stained glass artwork featuring antique Mack trucks.
This one-of-a-kind piece was commissioned by the Birch and Carmichael Company in Rochelle, Illinois, as a tribute to the owners, who were passionate about restoring and preserving antique Mack trucks. It originally adorned their boardroom as a window with indirect lighting, and it’s now a cherished part of our collection.
The stained glass features several notable Dunn Cole trucks, including the CJ model, which was first introduced at the 1934 World's Fair and was the first production truck to sport a Mack bulldog. We have records confirming this as the first production truck with the iconic bulldog emblem. Also featured is the Green AC, which was once part of our collection and was highlighted in Bulldog Magazine in 1984.
The artwork is housed in a custom cabinet built by Ed Gerken, a local signmaker known for his restoration work. LED lights illuminate the piece, bringing out its intricate details. The stained glass represents trucks owned by Bertrand Carmichael, including the 1916 AC and the B61 model. Some of these trucks are part of other museums, such as Pat Compatero’s collection in New England and a waste museum in Florida.
The stained glass also includes the original patterns used in its creation, with each piece of glass meticulously numbered by the artists. The photographs of these trucks were taken by a Mack photographer in 1984, with an article written by Pat Baker, who later became a senior parts director for Mack Trucks.
We hope you enjoy this unique and historical piece of art as much as we do!
