  • Bob Nuss from the Nuss Collection in Rochester, Minnesota, and today we’re highlighting a real piece of history-an original Boulder Dam Mack truck. This is one of seven Mack trucks used on the famous Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) project, a key part of our museum's collection. While many international trucks were involved in the project, the heavy lifting was done by 17 Mack trucks. Civil engineering giants like Bechtel, Morse, and Knutson were part of the construction and relied on these Mack AP Super Duty trucks, specially built for the job.
This 60,000-pound, 30-ton truck is a marvel of engineering, featuring a heavy-duty spring suspension and chain drive, built to withstand the extreme demands of the project. There's also a unique feature for the driver-a small platform on the side of the truck, allowing them to stand outside for a better view of the load while navigating steep grades and controlling the throttle.
Be sure to check out the newspaper clippings and historical documents on display next to the truck. It’s an absolute beauty and a true piece of American engineering history.
