  • Trucking Tribute: 1926 Mack AB
Hi, I'm Bob Nuss from the Nuss Collection Museum in Rochester, Minnesota. Today, I’m excited to showcase a unique piece of trucking history: the 1926 Mack AB.
This particular Mack AB is a chain-drive model, which sets it apart from most AB trucks that were typically shaft-driven. The chain-drive design is similar to the AC models. It features a four-cylinder engine producing 63 horsepower and is equipped with a four-speed transmission.
What makes this truck even more special is its original patina. It has never been restored and has an incredible history. This Mack AB was originally part of the Dunn Cold fleet in Chicago, a company established in 1877. When Dunn Cold’s property was acquired to make way for the Dan Ryan Expressway, their equipment was sold off.
My father, Charlie Nuss, along with Barton Birch, discovered and acquired this truck, along with a few others, during that time. This truck was stored in Rochelle, Illinois, for nearly 30 years, covered under a canvas. Although Barton Birch had plans to restore it, it remained untouched.
Years later, I visited Ben Birch, and we discussed this remarkable truck. The Birch family, who has been instrumental in many of the things we’ve done for the museum, wanted the Mack AB to find a home here in Minnesota. We brought it up, tuned up the carburetor, and to our surprise, after sitting for 30 years, the engine fired right up!
This Mack AB is a rare, unrestored gem with a rich history. It’s in excellent running condition and retains its original patina. If you’re a fan of vintage trucks, you’ll definitely want to come and see this unique piece of trucking heritage in person.
Thank you for watching, and we hope to see you at the Nuss Collection Museum soon!
