I imagine you could, but it would alter the taste. I've tried swapping golden syrup for honey a few times before, and the resulting flavour has been hit and miss. If you're a fan of honey though and don't mind it combined with chocolate, it sounds like a viable substitute.

I don’t use self-raising flour because it’s so rare a recipe in the U.S. calls for it. What is the gram ratio ... since the recipe is in grams ... for the added salt and leavener?

I would need to use vegan ingredients to make it. Flax seeds can be an egg substitue. Vegan butter and cream cheese are also substitue products.
