The scary part is, I don't see what the potential upside of Antony is. His best trick is a really slow and inaccurate imitation of Robben and you can't play him on the left because half the squad already plays there XD

The potential upside of Antony is the pure industry he offers us. He grafts more than any winger at our club currently!
Antony reminds me so much of Antonio Valencia, both were extremely one-footed. Both were great grafters. Both were frustrating in the final third too.
Hot take 🔥 but if we were to play a back 3 I think his qualities lend well to being a wing back.

I think the main issue is the recruiting department. Man Utd need of a right winger is no secret. Antony was never near the price tag in the first place, but the recruiting team just allow the price to be inflated. All of sudden, a mediocre player worth 85 million and people start expecting him to be a top player. He was never near the top. He does not have the direct running as a young Hazard, nor the dribbling skill of a young Neymar, nor the speed of a young Bale, nor the creativity of a young Coutinho. He was just an average flashy winger with some fancy but mostly ineffective footwork even at Ajax.

I think even if we play McTominay in that role and shift Mount out there, we'd benefit more and have the added benefit of height and physicality in midfield to counter press and defend in transition more effectively than we are currently. McTominay's ability to carry from deep as well can be useful depending on the situation. Not sure why we haven't done this yet.

Atleast not the level I would expect after witnessing Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes, Keane, Giggs etc wear this shirt. United really struggle to sign players that are “worthy” to wear this shirt. We need to stop signing mid players. United isn’t a broke club. If we progress like this, united will become less and less appealing for world class players to sign for us, if there is no positive outlook. Who would want to waste his career at united? I admit Antony needs to improve in all areas don't get me wrong, but you can't just single him out. Our entire midfield has been atrocious, thus far including arguably our best player in Bruno. What is Antony doing on the left, it won't be bad but I think for now, mount should occupy that right hand side, Dalot should come back to the team then maybe we can use Antony on the right for now, we can get casemiro back and we should start thinking of using a 433 midfield with Luke shaw at left and bruno at right while we bring in malacia for defensive covering, at least malacia is a better ball player than awb, also we should experiment with sancho as an 8 and bruno is a deep lying playmaker with bottom level teams

In my view Manchester United management must do a through background check of each and every player before signing them.
Because of their young age , their personal background check becomes a mandatory club hiring practice. We need this precautions because of certain past involvements of players which has an negative impact in the team. Its better to be safe as much as possible. Club medical department should be involved whenever necessary to assist in the hiring process beside their normal medical checkup practice. If not done now a psychological test of all players should be made from time to time to ensure their mental fitness as well.

Antony is a personification of whats wrong with our club. Antony strongest qualities, like a good few of our first team players is... off the ball metrics.
Love him or loathe him... Antony is a grafter. He reminds me so much of Antonio Valencia in that respect. Both are/were amazing grafters. Both are/were extremely one-footed. Both are temperamental and both frustrated the living daylight out of me in the final third too.
Like I said in another comment. Its a bit of a hot take 🔥 but if we were to play a back 3. His off the ball qualities lend well to being a decent wing back imo.

I understand the frustration but where was this kind of criticism to Sancho? I mean I have yet to see this star signing deliver 2 years later even after getting a special training regimen and all the patience in the world but didn't see any videos targeting him. Antony had more of an impact in a single season than Sancho in two, You can actually tell when he's on the pitch and the desire and attitude he brings and also his defensive engagement and solidarity with his teammates.
I think people are being unfair with Antony as he has already proven with his first season that he could become a key player for the club, but seeing how bad most of the team looked the past two games, I think the manager has to take responsibility.
I completely disagree with moving him to the left, that will completely amputate him as a player, he's not a crosser, he's got that brazilian flair like Vinicius, Neymar, Ronaldinho, etc. They all literally HAVE to play in these positions it's in their nature. If you watch him in Ajax you can see apart from cutting inside he also loved going down the touchline near the edge of the corner and taking on his opponents, it seems to me he's being instructed otherwise so this has to be a tactical issue because he's totally capable of doing so.

  • @jollygreen68

I've been saying this since last year. Antony will never be a great or world class player for Utd or anyone. He not only lacks the skill to beat EPL defenders, but also lacks basic skills to be great anywhere. And most importantly, he's a bad character and has a horrible attitude.
Erik made a HUGE mistake forcing our front office to buy this guy. He's worth 20-30 mil at the absolute most! Erik is proving to be a very strange coach at this point now. I was ALL for him coming in and completely changing this team and making smart decisions, changing the way we play and lineup. But some of the choices he made last year and now this year are very worrying. The first one being, that he made Utd pay an absolutely INSANE transfer fee for Antony. He's never going to be anywhere near worth what they paid for him and is just another example of Utd wasting money. And it's extremely weird that Erik (who is seemingly very intelligent) would stick his neck out for this guy and ask for a record transfer fee for a player that has no record of scoring lots of goals, providing lots of assists or being an amazing player. And especially seeing that he's coming form the Eredivisie, a league that is miles lower than most of the other big European leagues. He has 18 goals at Ajax in 57 appearances. Not horrific, but definitely nothing to get excited about. 6 goals in 48 appearances in Sao Paolo. And 4 goals in 27 appearances for Utd. Those are NOT good numbers at all.
The second being that he continues to not tell Harry Maguire to not let the door hit him on the way out! It's been clear as day to anyone with a functioning brain, that Maguire is absolutely garbage for at least 2-3 years now. When Utd bought him, I was completely confused. He wasn't good enough for Utd back then, and he's only gotten much much worse each season since. So WHY is Erik playing this charade in public by saying Harry is a good defender, but then he never plays him and says he is going to have to compete if he wants to get into the side? Be a Man and make the easy call. Fire this guy and get in a player that can actually play, because Maguire can not defend. He's atrocious and his attitude is just as bad.
Then I'm really worried about Erik and this new 3-1-6 "in possession" formation with two no 8's that is NOT WORKING AT ALL. It's scary that he would try this so early in the season, when the team is clearly still just trying to put together good performances week in and week out. Which they can't do! So why is he trying to implement this difficult to understand and difficult to play well formation?!?! And why did he pick the exact same team to go out against Tottenham when it was absolutely destroyed by Wolves the week before who are not at the level of Tottenham?!?! That is a very worrying red flag in my mind about Erik. Sure, he is intelligent and has great ideas about how to play football, but I'm really worried about his ignorance of knowing WHEN to switch it up. Play a formation the players know and can carry out well. Work on this other formation as they gain confidence and after the team starts winning and playing well. Slowly start integrating it. I'm not saying Erik is a bust at this point or anything like that. We've had 2 bad games and it's very early in the season. We shouldn't be freaking out and calling for him to get sacked and all that. But he has made some very worrying calls on player acquisitions and tactics/formations/squad choices and that needs to be remedied. Not forced down the teams throat, all the while we keep loosing. That is NOT how you change a team and implement a new strategy of how to play.
And as far as Antony goes, If you watch him at Ajax, the ONLY thing he did well, was dance around some defenders with some fancy footwork and then make a generic pass to someone else. He provides virtually nothing to Utd's attack and is a horrible teammate. Constantly makes the wrong decision. Misses absolute SITTERS in front of the goal all the time. Is really not even that fast. He's quick, but is always easily caught by basically anyone chasing him. Can't make a good pass to save his life (the only pass I've ever seen him make that was fantastic was the preseason game against Lens where he held up, waited for Rashford's run and put it in there perfectly. That's it! Never seen anything like that from him).
In addition, he lacks basic skills that every footballer should have! It's astonishing how he's come this far and is on such a big team with such HORRIFIC shooting and passing. He can barely shoot with his left foot and it's more like a pass. SOO weak. And not very accurate at all. Can't even use his right. And his passing with both feet is childlike at best. And to top it all off, he has a HORRIBLE attitude. He's constantly scowling on the pitch, has a petulant nasty attitude and is constantly getting into fights with other players. Gives up horrible child like fouls because he thinks he was wronged.
He has had a full year, an off season and now 2 games this year to "get used" to the team and the EPL. And it's safe to say, he is not getting it. And it's because of all these issues I've listed. He just doesn't have the talent or ability. And his attitude is horrible. He will go down as another one of Man Utds HUGE MASSIVE flops, along with Pogba and Maguire. The absolute best he can ever be is maybe 10 goals, a few assists and that's it. And that's only IF he changes his attitude and starts carrying more about being a great teammate, playing better and giving his all and dropping the petulant/nasty attitude.
Amad and Pellistri would be a HUGE upgrade to start over Antony and I'm fairly certain Erik made a HUGE mistake bringing this guy to our team. Erik needs to drop him right away and let Pellistri and then Amad have the bulk of the opportunities going forward. They have proven that they will work hard, have great attitudes and actually had much better spells of play then Antony.

Antony's price tag means its hard for EtH to justify another outlay on a right winger but he is seriously 40mil overpaid and not quite up to PL standards. Granted he can improve but he looks woefully out of his depth now, too 1-dimensional and getting most things wrong. And there aren't any real competitors on the right flank, or options for EtH.
