Literally yesterday I bought another small form laptop, because I didn't find this video until today (well, RUclips recommended it to me today). I need a small form laptop, and the Surface would have been great, but with the old-ish CPU, and just 8 GB RAM, and 64GB eMMc storage...I was afraid it would be too slow for what I'd use it. Had I known the storage is upgradable, I think this is what I would have bought. Can any of you guys tell me if the RAM can be upgraded? Thank you very much!
Great Video.. Love your detailed description. Thanks for the nice afford. Just wondering if i install a new NVME drive. how do i get the product key on a new install?
You can either clone your device beforehand, or if you log into the same Microsoft account on both devices, it should automatically recognize your product key is associated with the motherboard.
I got it to work, but now I get a new problem. What does it mean if my fps starts really good and fast, then the fan starts to accelerate to a point, at that point my gps goes to 2. What do I do? Thanks.
Hi. Thanks for reviews. As I see you know about that maybe you can give me answer. I have s Surface Go 3 pentium Gold 8/128gb. I know ram and memory are soldered. Is it possible to unsold ram and memory and put a bigger one? What a about the chip to change for a good i3 or i5? Thanks for your answer and greetings from Spain
Many years ago I took apart an HP/Compaq TC4400 and ended up wrecking it by breaking a tiny cable connector latch. That was the biggest bummer in all of history. Other than that I have had good success upgrading laptops. This one looks like a nailbiter. I just got a Surface Laptop Go with 64gb emmc. Should I upgrade? I am hesitant....
@@innoiso I succeeded in putting a 256gb SSD in there. I tore one of the rubber strips and broke 1 little plastic clip, but that's okay. The thing I was most worried about was the little cable latch but I didn't break it either. Thanks a lot for the video. I couldn't use the laptop with its original 64gb of storage; the OneDrive cloud storage just wasn't working for me. Now with 256gb I can use it.
I just picked up a chuwi larkbox pro with 128gb emmc storage and support for m.2 2242 sata iii ssd storage. Am i going to notice a significant difference moving from the emmc to m.2 sata iii ssd storage setup under normal mostly shell navigation and browser usage activities? I read somewhere that emmc is just as fast for small reads/writes as m.2 ssd but it falls way behind when it comes to large file reads/writes is that true? Would that explain the windows 10 feature update install and post update disk cleanup processes i executed on that device appeared to take a long time?
Thanks a lot for that. I'll get my wife happy to extend her 64Gb Surface Go 1 Laptop. On Ram nothing can be done as I see right? Other question, for SO I must format all os copying all SSD on new one it's enought?
One question, before you upgrade the ssd, do you need to copy the older drive into new ssd? And how to do that? Can you just put blank ssd into the laptop? Than where is window stored?
Hey sorry I meant to respond to this quicker. You can either image your SSD before you make the switch (I use Macrium Reflect which has a free trial) Or you can install windows by making an USB boot drive
If you preinstall Windows before booting the Go, the most important driver that you need is the Wifi driver. If you don't have it, you'll have to plug your laptop into Ethernet to connect to the internet and start downloading all of the drivers.
That would be a huge endeavor. If I was more talented with electrical engineering I would try it. Theres probably very little space, and powering the LEDs would be difficult. I like the idea though
I tried to hold the laptop up to the camera but it was tough to see the cable. That's why I said you need to life the keyboard off slowly and disconnect the ribbon cable
@@innoiso it the detail on how to remove the cable, needs to use a plastic pry tool to lift the latch up, then remove the cable, same as the power cable. I would also mention after reinstall the OS, download and install the Suface Laptop Go driver pack from Microsoft.
You can use your finger nail to lift the latch, but yes I didn't detail that. And you don't have to install the driver pack if you make a disk image to start, but yes that is a solution. I tried to make it clear that this is not a complete guide and the description has the official Microsoft guide
will be showing this to my friend who runs a electronic store and asking for this procedure to be done on my which im typing on now. Innolso can i also upgrade my ram for this machine?
Do you mean Laptop Go? Because the regular Go is not upgradable, only the Laptop Go is. And you'd probably be best calling the technician first to ask if they're willing to do so

I have heard others upgrading to 512 without issues, but I'm not sure I've seen the limit anywhere. The laptop still works great for me months later, and I love it
@@innoiso whoa that's amazing news! Thanks a lot dude!
what is the model of 512 SSD for this laptop? thanks in advance
Thanks, good procedure
Thank you 👍 I search this information
You're welcome!
Hi my friend
You did great Job, I was worried, can I upgrade mine or not, you showed us, yes we can upgrade it!
I wish you should try the ram, only 4GB or can it go to 8 GB and higher!
But thanks for awesome video 👏👏👏👏
great to know the entry surface go can be upgraded. do you mind to share what's your ram usage upon boot into the windows? curious to know if 4gb really enough..
60% memory usage on boot. I know that doesn't seem like enough, but I haven't had many issues with it in normal day to day use.
are there any alternative ssd instead of this one? Can you please name some that can be used with the surface laptop?
thank you dude, this was a great resource.
You're welcome!
Great video. Was just wondering about the SSD Size, I see you have used M.2 2230 size. Is it possible to use like M.2 2242 or M.2 2280 size of ssd in it? I cant find it in the service guide regarding the size limit.
It needs to be a 2230 unfortunately
@@innoiso Thanks for the info.
Great video! With the battery do you know on whether these is glue holding down the battery?
Thank you so much for your video is being very helpful while I'm trying to do exactly the same thing.... I just got one quick question since you have done a lot of this in different models... Do you think or do you know if my SSD from my Surface Pro X will fit my Microsoft Surface laptop go? They are the same size but I can see that this Surface Pro X SSD has a bit of an enclosure wrapped around it? Have you tried putting one of this Surface tablets ssds into the slot of the GO to see if it fits? I would appreciate your knowledge... Thanks 👍
Thank you very much for the great how to video.
Thank you for the watch and comment!
so emmc don't always mean that's it soldered great news and good job
Thank you!
Great video. Is that black laptop you have in the video another Surface Laptop Go with a skin on it? I can't quite tell.
Thank you! No it's the black model of the Surface Laptop 3!
Hello and thanks for the video - going to upgrade my daughters but the link you have for the SSD is showing a different connector - one with 2 slots compared to the single that came out, can you clarify please as i am confused on what SSD to get. It was the 512 that was different
Unfortunately the RAM isn't upgradeable. My system still performs alright with 4GB and the upgraded SSD, but I'm doing lighter work on it
Great Video.. Love your detailed description. Thanks for the nice afford. Just wondering if i install a new NVME drive. how do i get the product key on a new install?
You can either clone your device beforehand, or if you log into the same Microsoft account on both devices, it should automatically recognize your product key is associated with the motherboard.
@@innoiso ok. Yah I have done that before with custom PC’s. I just figured these devices have one OEM key. Thanks allot
What about the normal surface go tablet
It’s unfortunately not user-upgradable
@@innoiso do external GPUs / CPUs work (if that exists)?
Thank you! but we need your help about this on Toshiba Satellite CL15-C1310 Laptop 11.6" Celeron 2GB RAM 32GB eMMC
I got it to work, but now I get a new problem. What does it mean if my fps starts really good and fast, then the fan starts to accelerate to a point, at that point my gps goes to 2. What do I do? Thanks.
Brave man. The Ram can't be upgraded? What kind of NVME drive was that?
The RAM can't be upgraded, the drive is linked in the description
Heat IT!!!!!! i know this doesn't help now but in the future
This dude is the 🐐
I am going in very shallow, or so she said. But seriously what about 4gb of ram?
i have the one with the i5 10th gen, and 8gb of ram and its great for school and everything like that
Nice! It's a great machine for the price
Take it slow, watch a couple videos, and read the manual. Understand the concern. If it's still too nerve wracking, don't force yourself
Great job! Glad I could help! Hope you love the upgrade!
Nothing can be done about RAM, but upgrading the SSD has a positive impact on performance because the pagefile will be faster
@@innoiso Thanks for your answer. Greetings from Spain.
Can you link the materials used here? I just bought a second hand SLG 1 in 128GB but wanna go 512GB
You should have just used a heat gun to remove the rubber strips. 😂
The SSD is not recognized after putting it in. Any idea on what I can do to get it to show up?
Can you look for it in bios?
Ι think that you MUST upgrade the ram with 4 Gb is useless for windows 10
After install the ssd , will i reinstall windows, if yes then how we will reinstall and what is process, can you please make a video
One question, before you upgrade the ssd, do you need to copy the older drive into new ssd? And how to do that?
Can you just put blank ssd into the laptop? Than where is window stored?
Hey sorry I meant to respond to this quicker.
You can either image your SSD before you make the switch (I use Macrium Reflect which has a free trial)
Or you can install windows by making an USB boot drive
Will it install the drivers/Windows 11 automatically if I pre-install the NVMe before booting the Go for the first time?
If you preinstall Windows before booting the Go, the most important driver that you need is the Wifi driver. If you don't have it, you'll have to plug your laptop into Ethernet to connect to the internet and start downloading all of the drivers.
@@innoiso Thanks! Where can I D/L the driver?
Do you think it's possible to add lighting to the keyboard ? maybe a few light strips between the surface and the keyboard inner deck?
That would be a huge endeavor. If I was more talented with electrical engineering I would try it. Theres probably very little space, and powering the LEDs would be difficult. I like the idea though
@@innoiso Aw, that's a bummer! I'm loving mine but my only complain is the lack of a keyboard light :/
@@ulissesjunior5280 It is frustrating at night for sure
Clear glow in the dark keyboard cover maybe?
This is not the "galaxy book go" I have 6 of. Mine have dimpled feet and probably soldered in emmc.
No, this is the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go
following your video, your steps missed the part on how to disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable.
Hi, I have a 128GB Microsoft Surface Go and I want to put a 512GB. Is it compatible?
will be showing this to my friend who runs a electronic store and asking for this procedure to be done on my which im typing on now. Innolso can i also upgrade my ram for this machine?
Thank you! A professional should be able to do it even better. Unfortunately the RAM is not upgradeable as it is soldered to the motherboard.
Heat the glue before you peel it off, might be the best way 😉
for the rubber feet removal, should i use a hair dryer to loosen up the adhesive abit?
It might help, your best bet once you get underneath is to slide a tool underneath the rubber, flush against the Surface, rather than pulling on it
I wanted to see if you can change the RAM....?
You unfortunately can not
Can I bring my surface go pro to a technician to upgrade the gigs from 64 to higher
Do you mean Laptop Go? Because the regular Go is not upgradable, only the Laptop Go is. And you'd probably be best calling the technician first to ask if they're willing to do so
Sir can you give a links to buy that ssd in India
Man, I really felt your pain…haha
I’ll just plug in usb memory…lol
Where is the RAM
? How to upgrade RAM?
The RAM is not user-upgradeable
